Two Chinese Mathematicians Make History at the 2026 Fields Medal Ceremony
Known as “the Nobel Prize of mathematics”, the 2026 Fields Medals were announced on July 23 at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Philadelphia. Four young scientists got this world’s top prize for math.
Two winners, Deng Yu and Wang Hong, are Chinese and have caught great attention from media around the world. This is an important moment that has never happened before. For the first time, Chinese mathematicians won this award, ending Western countries’ control of this famous prize for many years. Both finished their college studies at Peking University and then went abroad to continue their research.
Given by the International Mathematical Union every four years, the Fields Medal is only open to scientists under 40. Every winner gets two official prizes: a 14-karat gold medal with a picture of Archimedes and 15,000 Canadian dollars. The prize honors important new discoveries in different areas of mathematics.
Deng Yu works as a professor at the University of Chicago. He showed great talent in math when he was young. He won a gold medal in the International Mathematical Olympiad during high school and studied for his bachelor’s degree at Peking University. His important research made great progress on a key problem in Hilbert’s Sixth Problem. He created strict mathematical models to connect tiny molecular movements and large fluid motion, linking pure mathematics and physics.
At the same time, Wang Hong is 35, the youngest winner. She entered Peking University when she was 16. Now she is a Silver Professor at New York University’s Courant Institute. She solved the three-dimensional Kakeya conjecture, a problem no one could work out for a hundred years. It sits at the crossing of harmonic analysis and geometric measure theory. She said her success came from teamwork. Her mathematical ideas help create new developments in cryptography and computer science.
The fact that they both studied at Peking University for college shows that China’s basic mathematics education has made great progress. Their historic success broadens worldwide top-level mathematical research and encourages young people to study basic science subjects.

Last weekend, my dad asked me to garden with him together in the backyard. I wasn’t too excited about it, as I’d rather be playing video games indoors. But Dad insisted (坚持), so we gathered outside with seeds and gardening tools.
We started by planting seeds. Dad handed me a packet of sunflower seeds and a small shovel. “Plant them about an inch deep.” he instructed. I followed along, feeling the soil between my fingers, and soon we had a row of seeds waiting to sprout (发芽).
Days passed, and nothing seemed to happen. I was about to lose hope, thinking the seeds were just a waste. But then, a gentle reminder came, “Be patient. Good things take time.” A week later, tiny green shoots came out of the soil. I was amazed and ran to show everyone.
As the sunflowers grew taller, Dad taught me how to take good care of them. “Just like these plants, you also need care and love to grow.” he said. I began to understand how my parents support and care for me behind my growth.
One stormy night, the tallest sunflower broke. I felt very upset. Sitting beside me, a comforting voice said, “Sometimes, even the strongest can fall. But remember, they can still bloom, just a bit lower to the ground.”
That day, I was encouraged to be patient and resilient (有韧性的). The sunflowers taught me that growth isn’t always easy. Sometimes we need to bend and just be strong when facing every challenge.

27. What did the author learn from the experience with the sunflowers?
A. All plants can grow very quickly.
B. Gardening is always a simple task.
C. Patience and care are important for growth.
D. Video games are more interesting than gardening.
28. What did the author do when he found the seeds began to sprout?
A. He threw them away as waste.
B. He presented them to everyone.
C. He planted more seeds immediately.
D. He worried about the sprout’s future.
29. What does the phrase “just a bit lower to the ground” imply?
A. The sunflower will continue to grow.
B. The sunflower will never bloom again.
C. The sunflower will not grow any taller.
D. The sunflower will be easier to care for now.
30. How did the.author’s feelings change throughout the story?
A. Bored→Ashamed→Excited→Annoyed→Upset→Thankful
B. Excited→Bored→Thankful→Angry→Doubtful→Encouraged
C. Bored→Hopeless→Amazed→Understanding→Sad→Encouraged
D. Hopeful→Disappointed→Surprised→Understanding→Upset→Patient

It’s clear that the world will be quite different in the year 2045. But what changes might we see? It’s pretty likely that robots and AI technology will bring great changes to jobs. Also, self-driving and flying cars will come into our daily life, making our lives easier. Scientists have even bigger ideas in a video called To the Future.
Dr. Juraz believes we might be able to control things round us simply with our thoughts. “Imagine that you could use simple devices (设备) to connect to your mind and control things around you simply by thinking about it.” Juraz says. According to him, scientists are working on the technologies that can make this happen. They’ve made some progress already.
The future has more than just that. Steven says that we’ll be able to create very strong but light things. New materials will change the way we build everything from cars to spacecraft. Imagine cars are safer, more energy-saving, and able to carry heavier things. Lighter spacecraft could mean great cuts in the cost and make more exploration goals possible.
Panny believes that our relationship with machines will change. She says, “I think one day we can tell a machine what to do with just a button or a few simple words.” For example, pilots have to follow many steps for a plane to take off. But in 2045, according to Panny, “Prepare for taking off”, and the computer will do the rest. Or maybe, we won’t even need pilots.
These are just a few of the many possible changes that 2045 might bring. It makes us wonder what other surprises the future holds. Will there be new forms of energy that change our lives?
31. What can we learn from the first two paragraphs?
A. Robots and AI have already controlled things with people’s thoughts.
B. Scientists are trying to develop technology to control things by thoughts.
C. Self-driving cars have widely entered people’s daily life now.
D. Dr. Juraz has invented simple devices to connect to our mind.
32. According to Steven, what is the future spacecraft like?
A. Cheaper. B. Safer. C. Bigger. D. Heavier.
33. How does Panny explain her idea?
A. By telling a story. B. By giving an example.
C. By listing numbers. D. By making comparisons.
34. What will the writer probably write about after the last paragraph?
A. Many possible changes. B. New forms of energy.
C. New wonders in 2045. D. Planes without pilots.
35. Which of the following shows the structure of this passage?
A. B. C. D.

第二节 读写综合(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读短文,回答下面5个问题,将答案写在答题卡标有题号的横线上。(每题答案不超过10个词)
Fashion trends (趋势) are around us, and can be exciting. A trend used to happen in a 20-year cycle, but the latest development of the Internet and clothing business has increasingly cut the length of the cycle short. Now, it seems there comes a new fashion trend every couple of months, but it still follows the same stages:
●A trend is usually first brought in during a big fashion show. Reporters, writers, and some other important people collect what they have learned in the show and predict a trend in the near future.
●Then the trend is talked about online and finally worn by famous people to make it better accepted, which leads to the rise of the trend.
●Once the trend becomes popular, it will go to the public soon. Large clothing companies and shops begin following the trend so that everyone can get their hands on it. This is when the trend gets to the highest point.
●After that, the trend usually falls and becomes out of date. However, this is not always the end, as trends happen in broader cycles and most get popular again.
Trends can be a great way to try something new and test your style. A survey says some people enjoy following trends because they keep fashion exciting and provide fresh ideas. However, others may not think so, especially when a trend doesn’t agree with how they feel about themselves. Trends can be fun, but sometimes prove a waste of money because many simply see trends as brands (品牌). So, should we follow fashion trends?
Clearly, there’s no right answer whether to follow trends or not depends on how they go with your values, spending, and sense of self. It does not hurt to watch trend reports but never choose to follow them unless you really think they fit with your personal style.
46. How long does a new fashion trend last now?

47. Who usually first realizes a new fashion trend?

50. Do you prefer brands when buying clothes? Why or why not?

Benjamin Franklin left the deepest impression on me
Among the characters we met in our textbook, Benjamin Franklin left the deepest impression on me.
He was a great scientist from America. One of his most famous stories is about flying a kite in a thunderstorm. Through this dangerous experiment, he proved that lightning is a kind of electricity. Later, he invented the lightning rod to protect buildings. I think he was a brave and creative person. He was not afraid of danger when he was looking for the truth.
From his story, I have learned that we should be curious about the world. What's more, we should be brave to try new things and never give up.
