When Rob Clark helped organize the Wenonah Park Cleanup 13 years ago, the goal was simple: bring people together to tidy up the area and make a visible difference. Today, that small project has grown into Bay County’s Day of Caring in cooperation with the United Way, attracting hundreds of volunteers each year.
On Friday, April 24, over 800 volunteers gathered early in Wenonah Park on a cold morning before spreading out to 39 sites across the county. They planted flowers, raked leaves and painted public areas, making it the largest community cleanup in Bay County history. Though the event has grown greatly, Clark still takes an active part, continuing to serve the community.
“It’s encouraging to live in a community where so many people care enough to give up a whole day,” Clark said. People from local businesses, schools and civic (市民的) groups all look forward to the event and take part eagerly.
The event started in 2014 with only 40 volunteers. In 2021, Nicole Luczak from the United Way suggested combining the park cleanup with Day of Caring. Since then, it has expanded rapidly across the county.
“This is my favourite day,” Luczak said. “In a world full of negativity, people put aside differences and work together. Seeing 800 people start early with smiles gives me hope.”
Local businesses support the event by permitting employees to volunteer during work hours, showing their sense of social responsibility. It also draws volunteers of all ages, especially young people experiencing community service for the first time.
Mayor Christopher Girard believes such spirit will pass from generation to generation, making the community a better place.
Organizers have honoured Clark with a plaque (牌匾) at the starting point. “I’m thankful for the honour, but we do this out of love for our community and for each other,” Clark said.
24. What was the initial goal of the Wenonah Park Cleanup?
A. To attract more tourists to the local park. B. To expand the influence of the United Way.
C. To clean up the area and make a difference. D. To train young people for community service.
25. What do we know about this year’s Day of Caring?
A. It was hosted only by local schools. B. It gathered more than 800 volunteers.
C. It focused on providing indoor services. D. It was put off because of the cold weather.
26. Why do local businesses support the event?
A. To show their social responsibility. B. To promote their products directly.
C. To cut down their daily operation cost. D. To select new employees for their companies.
27. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Ways to Protect Public Parks in Bay County

A honeybee flying through thick plants seems to do it easily, but every quick turn requires complex decisions. Faced with several openings, the insect has to quickly choose the safest path without wasting energy or hitting obstacles.
Researchers at the University of New South Wales Canberra studied how bees make such decisions. Their study, published in Biology Letters, shows that honeybees mainly compare openings relative to one another, rather than judging each gap separately. The results offer a closer look at how insects with tiny brains navigate (导航) challenging environments so effectively.
To test how bees choose paths, the researchers built a tunnel with a sugar reward at one end. They placed a barrier with two rectangular (长方形的) openings of the same width but different heights. By changing the size and relative difference of the openings, they observed the bees’ choices.
The experiments showed that bees do judge gaps based on relative size. Their behaviour also changed with risk. When both openings were small and collision risk high, bees evaluated choices much more carefully, and their preferences became clearer as the size difference increased.
However, when both openings were large enough for safe passage, bees showed no strong preference and chose almost randomly. They spent less effort analyzing choices because careful comparison was no longer necessary. This flexible strategy helps them save energy while staying safe.
It is surprising that such smart behaviour comes from an animal with a very small brain. Instead of making detailed comparisons all the time, bees only devote more effort to judging paths when the environment is dangerous.
Understanding how bees navigate is valuable beyond insect biology. It shows efficient decision-making does not require powerful computing. Such knowledge may help design smarter robots or AI that can move through crowded, complex environments. Even after years of research, honeybees still surprise people with their advanced ways of dealing with the world.
28. How do honeybees choose a path according to the study?
A. By following other bees. B. By remembering familiar routes.
C. By comparing openings with each other. D. By judging the absolute size of each gap.
29. When will bees make careful choices?
A. When both openings are large and safe. B. When the sugar reward is easy to reach.
C. When both openings are small and risky. D. When they have enough energy to spend.
30. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Robots can copy all behaviours of bees. B. The study has practical uses in technology.
C. Bees’ brains are more powerful than computers. D. The secrets of bees won’t be unlocked.
31. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To present a scientific finding. B. To call on people to protect bees.
C. To introduce a new species of bee. D. To compare different insect behaviours.

People often admire others’ seemingly perfect and effortless life, yet they only show their bright side. As outsiders, we hardly notice the hidden struggles and inner doubts behind the surface.
From my experience as a junior collegiate volleyball player, I have observed that most students only recognize the advantages of being a college athlete: gaining sincere friends, pursuing a beloved sport, and improving physical health while receiving higher education. However, they fail to notice the obvious downsides, especially the severe damage competitive sports can do to athletes’ mental health.
In recent years, athletes’ mental health has gained growing media attention, focusing on burnout, injury, overtraining and athletic identity. Researcher Thomas Raedeke defines athlete burnout as a psychological syndrome (综合征) with exhaustion, reduced accomplishment and sport devaluation. Stemming from intense training and competitive pressure, burnout greatly damages athletes’ mental well-being without timely professional support.
Most college athletes tie their self-worth closely to their sports performance. Once they fail to meet self-expectations or team standards, they tend to suffer from low self-esteem and force themselves to train harder to make up for the so-called “failure”. Ironically, this blind self-pressure never improves their performance; instead, it greatly increases their performance anxiety and forms a vicious (恶性的) cycle.
College athletics advocates a “mental toughness” culture, forcing athletes to balance heavy studies, strict training and limited social life. This forms a social stigma: seeking mental help is seen as weakness. Duke University’s research shows merely 10 percent of college athletes seek help when suffering mental troubles.
Latest studies reveal the severe mental health crisis facing college athletes. A 2022 NCAA study found female athletes suffer more severe negative emotions than male ones. A 2024 medical study further warned that NCAA athletes’ suicide (自杀) rates have risen over 20 years, making suicide their second leading cause of death.
The cruel reality raises a thought-provoking question: Is it worthwhile to sacrifice mental health for a sport that is originally supposed to relieve stress and bring joy? For struggling student athletes, it is vital to realize that mental health struggles are common and asking for help is brave and necessary.
32. What does the author stress in the first two paragraphs?
A. Outsiders know well about athletes’ inner struggles.
B. People often overlook athletes’ hidden mental troubles.
C. College athletes tend to live a relaxed and effortless life.
D. Being a college athlete benefits students in many aspects.
33. What is the main cause of athlete burnout according to Thomas Raedeke?
A. Constant public attention and media coverage.
B. Low sense of personal accomplishment in sports.
C. Huge pressure from intense training and competition.
D. Failure to get recognition from coaches and teammates.
34. What does the underlined word “stigma” in Paragraph 5 most probably mean?
A. Traditional cultural belief. B. Common psychological barrier.
C. Practical rule and strict requirement. D. Shameful mark or negative prejudice.
35. What is the author’s attitude towards college athletes’ sacrificing mental health for sports?
A. Supportive. B. Tolerant. C. Disapproving. D. Unconcerned.
【答案】32. B 33. C 34. D 35. C

【32题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段中的“People often admire others’ seemingly perfect and effortless life, yet they only show their bright side. As outsiders, we hardly notice the hidden struggles and inner doubts behind the surface.(人们常常羡慕别人看似完美轻松的生活,然而他们只展现光鲜一面。作为外人,我们很难看到表象背后隐藏的挣扎与内心疑虑。)”以及第二段中的“However, they fail to notice the obvious downsides, especially the severe damage competitive sports can do to athletes’ mental health.(然而他们没有注意到明显的弊端,尤其是竞技体育会对运动员心理健康造成严重伤害。)”可知,作者强调人们常常忽视运动员隐藏的心理困扰。

细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Stemming from intense training and competitive pressure, burnout greatly damages athletes’ mental well-being without timely professional support.(倦怠源于高强度训练与竞赛压力,如果得不到及时专业帮助,会严重损害运动员的心理健康。)”可知,运动员倦怠的主要诱因是高强度训练和比赛带来的巨大压力。
【34题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第五段中的“This forms a social stigma: seeking mental help is seen as weakness.(这形成一种社会stigma:寻求心理帮助会被视作软弱。)”可知,运动员认为求助是软弱的表现,故猜测stigma意为“污名、负面偏见”。
【35题详解】

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was a cool autumn morning when 18-year-old Chloe Bennett set off alone on a day hike in the Blue Ridge Mountains. She had studied the route carefully, packed a small bag with water, dried fruits, and a simple first-aid kit, and felt sure she could follow the clear path. The sky was bright blue, and the wind carried the smell of pine trees and fallen leaves — perfect hiking weather.
Chloe walked uphill step by step, stopping now and then to take photos of the amazing view. At noon, she reached a quiet lookout and sat on a rock to rest. As she drank water, she saw dark clouds rolling in quickly. The wind became strong and the temperature dropped sharply. Remembering the ranger’s (管理员) warning about sudden storms, Chloe hurried to head down the mountain.
What should have been an easy trip down turned into a disaster. The light rain soon became a heavy storm, turning the path into mud. She could hardly see and lost her way. She walked for hours in the rain, her shoes stuck in mud, clothes wet through, and phone out of power. Night fell and it was freezing. Chloe stayed under a pine tree, trembling with cold and fear, trying hard to stay awake.
Tired, hungry and helpless, she was about to give up. Suddenly, she heard a weak sound — a dog barking in the distance. With all her strength, she stood up and shouted for help. The barking grew closer, and a flashlight appeared. A park ranger and his search dog found her in time. He wrapped a warm blanket around her and gave her hot water. He said the storm was worsening and the roads were destroyed.
Supported by the ranger, Chloe struggled back to the park station. A doctor examined her at once and provided warm food and dry clothes. Sitting beside the fire, she reflected on the terrible experience. She realized that nature could be powerful and unexpected, and that she should never be too careless when facing the wild.

1. 续写词数应为150个左右;

【答案】例文
The next morning, Chloe woke up feeling weak after the terrible night. Yet she felt peaceful, with the warmth of the fire still lingering around her. Her muscles still ached from the freezing night outdoors, yet immense relief flooded her heart. Staring at the sunlit quiet mountains outside the window, she chatted briefly with the ranger, listening to his stories happening during the work. After drinking hot soup and putting on dry clothes, she said goodbye to him and left the park station slowly. She deeply realized the value of safety awareness and full preparation for outdoor activities.
Several weeks passed before Chloe decided to revisit the ranger. She prepared a special gift, hoping to thank the kind ranger face to face. What’s more, she prepared a carefully handwritten thank-you card and a bag of nutritious treats for the loyal search dog. She found the ranger and walked up to him shyly, handing over her gifts and speaking out her sincere thanks again. This unforgettable experience completely changed her attitude towards hiking. It taught her to respect nature humbly and always cherish the kindness from strangers in life.

B. How to Inspire More Teenagers to Volunteer
C. The Development of the United Way in Bay County
D. A Small Cleanup Grows into a Community Tradition

D
