B
Growing up in America as a child of first-generation Chinese immigrants, I was used to living in two worlds. But as I grew older, the Chinese side faded away. While I happily accepted the red envelopes during Lunar New Year and consumed mooncakes on the Mid-Autumn Festival, I didn’t feel connected to the culture.
Before my children were born, I had already decided that I would teach them Mandarin (普通话). I felt that they ought to be able to speak the language of their heritage.
Parenting books advised describing your actions while playing with your children, so I started digging out the long-buried words during every activity: “ball”, “eat”, “sleep”, “play”. However, as this exercise continued, the gaps in my Mandarin became more and more obvious. Luckily, the ready availability of Chinese language media — from books to television shows to music — made things much easier. As they grew older, I took them to the local library where the tale of the Monkey King and the legend of Chang’e immediately caught their imagination.
When I see my son converse with his grandfather in Mandarin or when my daughter insists on fish for Lunar New Year, the time spent reading all those books closely feels well-spent.
Last fall, my youngest son recited Li Bai’s “Quiet Night Thoughts” for the Moon Festival performance at his preschool. His voice rang out with confidence and his arms swept up to indicate the moon above. Joy and wonder lit up my father’s face as he listened to the familiar verses from the mouth of his grandson.
Decades ago, my Chinese teacher explained to me how the moon connects all those who seek its light, no matter how far apart they are. So, too, does language. It influences culture and history, and connects future generations to past ones.
4. What do we know about the author as a child?
A. She travelled between two countries when young.
B. She was brought up in an all-English environment.
C. She once lost her sense of belonging to Chinese culture.
D. She was attracted to Chinese traditional festivals the most.
5. How did the author teach her children Mandarin?
A. Talking about her daily routine. B. Sending them to a Chinese teacher.
C. Buying them ancient Chinese storybooks. D. Taking advantage of Chinese language media.
6. Which of the following can best describe the author?
A. Ambitious. B. Devoted. C. Proud. D. Optimistic.
7. What lesson can be learnt from this article?
A. All roads lead to Rome. B. Every cloud has a silver lining.
C. Great minds think alike. D. Language bridges generations.
C 5. D 6. B 7. D
根据文章第一段“But as I grew older, the Chinese side faded away. While I happily accepted the red envelopes during Lunar New Year and consumed mooncakes on the Mid-Autumn Festival, I didn’t feel connected to the culture.(但随着年龄增长,中国元素逐渐淡出了我的生活。虽然我每逢春节都开心地收下红包,在中秋节时享用月饼,却不再感受到与这种文化的联系)”可知,作者曾经失去了对中国文化的归属感。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第三段“Parenting books advised describing your actions while playing with your children, so I started digging out the long-buried words during every activity: “ball”, “eat”, “sleep”, “play”. However, as this exercise continued, the gaps in my Mandarin became more and more obvious. Luckily, the ready availability of Chinese language media-from books to television shows to music-made things much easier. As they grew older, I took them to the local library where the tale of the Monkey King and the legend of Chang’e immediately caught their imagination.(育儿书籍建议在和孩子玩耍时描述自己的动作,于是我开始在每次活动中重新翻出那些早已被遗忘的词语:“球”“吃”“睡”“玩”。

It influences culture and history, and connects future generations to past ones.(几十年前,我的中文老师向我解释过,月亮连接着所有追寻其光芒的人,无论他们相隔多远。
C
The roar of late-night traffic is not just annoying for those trying to sleep. It can also have profound effects on their health. A pioneering new study, published this month, has found a clear link between road noise and Parkinson’s disease. The research, which followed more than 3 million Danish participants, found a modest but consistent effect: for every 11.5dB (分贝) rise in noise level, the risk of the worsening disorder rose by 3% over the 18-year study.
The study adds to the growing body of evidence that auditory bother is associated with serious physical consequences. The European Environment Agency reported last year that more than 110 million people across the continent suffer high levels of health-damaging noise pollution, with physiological stress and sleep disturbance leading to 66,000 early deaths annually as well as heart disease, diabetes and depression. It found that the harm caused was greater than from secondhand tobacco smoke exposure.
However, noise is not an uncontrollable part of city life. China’s official statistics suggests significant improvements there in the last decade. That’s not just down to the rise of electric vehicles, declining construction and closures of loud venues. Authorities have also installed sound barriers and laid tens of millions of square metres of quieter road surfacing.
Improved engineering and even lower speed limits can bring benefits. Sound insulation (隔音设施) for homes and reliance on noise-cancelling headphones should be a last resort. One of the subtler consequences of auditory pollution is not what it imposes on us, but what it takes away. Animals and even plants are acutely sensitive to loud noises and can be damaged by them. Traffic noise drowns out the rustling of trees. Those who learn to tune out what’s around them no longer mind the birdsong. Not all noise is unwelcome. But we should do more to address the sounds that bring misery, not least so that we can experience those that bring joy.
8. What does noise pollution result in based on the European Environment Agency?
A. Worsening hearing disorder.
B. An uncontrollable consequence.
C. 66,000 early deaths every month.
D. A worse damage than secondhand tobacco smoke.
9. What can we infer about China’s efforts to reduce noise pollution?
A. Authorities have taken effective measures.
B. The closure of loud venues is ineffective.
C. The rise of electric vehicles is the key factor.
D. Noise pollution in China has been controlled.
10. Why does the author mention animals and plants?
A. To show that noise pollution affects their living surroundings.
B. To explain that traffic noise has a hidden harmful effect.
C. To call on people to protect animals and plants from noise.
D. To prove that animals and plants are more sensitive than humans.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. Birdsong: A Hidden Threat to Health
B. Sound insulation: A Solution to Traffic Noise
C. Noise Pollution: A Bother to Health
D. China’s Progress: A Model to Address Noise Pollution
D 9. A 10. B 11. C
根据第二段中的“The European Environment Agency reported last year that more than 110 million people across the continent suffer high levels of health-damaging noise pollution, with physiological stress and sleep disturbance leading to 66,000 early deaths annually as well as heart disease, diabetes and depression. It found that the harm caused was greater than from secondhand tobacco smoke exposure. (欧洲环境署去年报告称,全欧洲有超过1.1亿人遭受有损健康的高强度噪音污染,生理压力与睡眠障碍每年造成66000例早逝,还会引发心脏病、糖尿病和抑郁症。该机构发现,噪音带来的危害大于二手烟暴露造成的危害。)”可知,噪音污染造成的危害比二手烟更严重。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“However, noise is not an uncontrollable part of city life. China’s official statistics suggests significant improvements there in the last decade. That’s not just down to the rise of electric vehicles, declining construction and closures of loud venues. Authorities have also installed sound barriers and laid tens of millions of square metres of quieter road surfacing.(然而噪音并非城市生活无法控制的一部分。中国官方数据显示过去十年噪声状况大幅改善。这不仅源于电动汽车普及、建筑施工减少和吵闹场所关停,政府还安装隔音屏障,铺设数千万平方米低噪音路面。)”可知,政府采取了多项行之有效的治理措施。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“One of the subtler consequences of auditory pollution is not what it imposes on us, but what it takes away. Animals and even plants are acutely sensitive to loud noises and can be damaged by them.(噪音污染一种较为隐蔽的后果不在于它直接施加给我们的伤害,而在于它夺走的东西。动物甚至植物对巨大噪音十分敏感,并且会因此受到伤害。)”可知,作者提及动植物,是为说明交通噪音存在隐蔽的负面影响。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中的“The roar of late-night traffic is not just annoying for those trying to sleep. It can also have profound effects on their health. A pioneering new study, published this month, has found a clear link between road noise and Parkinson’s disease. (深夜车流的轰鸣声,对想要入睡的人而言不只是恼人。它还会对人们的健康产生深远影响。本月发表的一项开创性新研究发现,道路噪音与帕金森病之间存在明确关联。)”可知,文章围绕噪音污染展开,既阐述噪音对人类健康带来多重伤害,也介绍了相应治理办法,所以“Noise Pollution: A Bother to Health(噪音污染:健康的一大困扰)”最能概括全文核心,适合作为最佳标题。
D
For many years, scientists believed that the adult brain was an unchanging organ. According to this view, once the brain reached its full developmental potential in early adulthood, its neural connections were fixed. This opinion held that the brain, like a muscle that reaches its maximum size, could not adapt or change after a certain point. However, the discovery of neuroplasticity (神经可塑性) has fundamentally altered our understanding of the brain. We now know that the brain is a dynamic, ever-changing organ that continues to reorganize itself in response to new experiences, learning and challenges.
A landmark study of London taxi drivers provides strong evidence of neuroplasticity in action. Taxi drivers in London must memorize a vast network of streets and landmarks in a test known as “The Knowledge.” Brain scans revealed that the posterior hippocampus — the area of the brain responsible for spatial memory — was significantly larger in these drivers than in the general population. More interestingly, the longer a driver had been on the job, the more pronounced the changes in this area of the brain, suggesting that the brain physically adapts to intense mental activity.
However, neuroplasticity is a double-edged sword. While the brain can be rewired for positive outcomes, it can also be shaped by negative habits. For instance, constant multitasking and excessive consumption of short-form content, such as quick social media videos, can train the brain to have a shorter attention span, making it harder to engage in focused, deep work.
The implications of this discovery are profound. We now know that the brain is not a fixed organ but a changeable one, constantly being influenced by our daily habits and actions. This means we have more agency over our cognitive health than we ever realized. Lifelong learning, mental stimulation, and even unlearning unhealthy habits are not just cultural ideals, but they are biological necessities for maintaining a tough, sharp mind throughout life.
12. What is the previous view of the adult brain?
A. It is capable of lifelong development.
B. It is reshaped by learning and training.
C. It is highly responsive to daily habits.
D. It is largely unchanged after maturity.
13. How does the author support the idea of neuroplasticity?
A. By analyzing reasons.
B. By comparing methods.
C. By presenting a case study.
D. By describing an experiment.
14. What does the underlined word “rewired” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Fixed. B. Simplified.
C. Adjusted. D. Destroyed.
15. What does the author argue in the last paragraph?
A. Daily habits greatly shape our minds.
B. People can’t control cognitive health.
C. Mental health depends fully on genes.
D. Lifelong learning is far from a necessity.
D 13. C 14. C 15. A
根据第一段“For many years, scientists believed that the adult brain was an unchanging organ.(多年来,科学家们一直认为成年大脑是不会发生变化的器官。)”
根据第二段“A landmark study of London taxi drivers provides strong evidence of neuroplasticity in action.(一项针对伦敦出租车司机的里程碑式研究为现实中的神经可塑性提供了有力证据。)”
根据第三段“While the brain can be rewired for positive outcomes, it can also be shaped by negative habits.(大脑既可以被rewired以产生积极效果,也会被不良习惯所塑造。)”
根据第四段“We now know that the brain is not a fixed organ but a changeable one, constantly being influenced by our daily habits and actions.(我们现在知道大脑不是固定不变的器官,而是可变的,持续受到我们日常习惯和行为的影响。)”

Putting things off costs a lot. One study published in 2013 ranked 22,053 people on a procrastination (拖延) scale of one to five. Each increase of one point was associated with a drop of nearly $15,000 in annual earnings. A study of 3,525 Swedish university students published in 2023 also found that procrastinators more likely to suffer anxiety, stress and loneliness. ____16____
____17____ One set is known as mental contrasting with implementation intentions (MCII). Popularised in a number of smartphone apps, the idea is simple: picture the benefits of achieving a goal; contrast that image with the main obstacle; and picture a strategy to overcome it. In two randomised trials reported in 2020 undergraduates were given online MCII exercises designed to reduce the delaying of bedtime, which research has linked to procrastination in general. They missed their intended bedtimes by around 38 minutes less each night than those in a control group given advice about healthy sleeping habits.
Exercise shows promise too. A Chinese trial published in March assessed procrastination in 77 male teenagers. They were randomly assigned to 12 weeks of strength training, high-intensity interval training, or a combination of the two. ____18____ An earlier study of 564 Chinese university students found that the most physically active also procrastinated less. The researchers speculated that overcoming the stress gave them a “sense of mastery” that boosted confidence and motivation.
These days, opportunities for procrastination are greater than before. Many people work from home, out of the boss’s sight. ____19____ In one review published in 2022, each of the 18 studies assessed linked excessive scrolling (滚屏) to procrastination. ____20____ Lack of sleep blocks executive function, leading to more failures of self-regulation. It would be helpful if the scientists involved could stop procrastination.
A. Mental exercises appear to help.
B. Smartphones often delay bedtime, too.
C. Smartphones offer endless distractions.
D. Here are some ways to stop procrastinating.
E. Then there is the question of diet and other habits.
F. They showed “significant reductions” in putting things off.
G. Procrastinators are more likely to delay medical treatment.
D 17. A 18. F 19. C 20. B

Sweat poured down Mark’s face. He had just finished trying out for Oakwood High School’s basketball team, and he knew making it to the team was a pretty sure thing. After all, he wasn’t just good — he was excellent.
Basketball ran in the family — his older brother Reggie was now playing at a top college, and Mark was expected to follow in his brother’s footsteps. But Mark had a secret: his heart was in another sport.
Wiping the sweat from his forehead, Mark jumped on a bus heading home. Through the window, his eyes were drawn to the field where cheerleaders (啦啦队) danced effortlessly. He couldn’t look away. For months now, cheerleading had been on his mind. Reaching into his bookbag, he pulled out a poster: CHEERLEADER AUDITIONS (选拔). This was what he really wanted.
Mark knew pursuing cheerleading wouldn’t just be a physical challenge. His family had poured so much hope into his basketball future. But he was tired of living in his brother’s shadow. He was ready to carve his own path.
Six months ago, Mark once told his best friend Darren about his dream. “Cheerleading is girly,” Darren said. “You’re so good at basketball. Why throw that away?” Mark stood his ground. “This is where I want to put my strength,” he insisted. Over time, Darren began to understand and support him. Still, Mark kept his passion hidden from his family.
Secretly, Mark trained with two cheerleaders. Cheerleading didn’t come naturally — every move demanded more than basketball ever had. But month by month, he improved. Maybe, just maybe, he stood a chance of making it to the cheerleading team. But right now, after his basketball tryout, he had to face his family.
As soon as Mark arrived home, his parents were at the door.
“So …?” his father asked.
“The tryout? It went well.” Mark replied, staring at his feet. Everyone in the family was smiling … except Mark.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
A week later, it was time for the cheerleader audition.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Version 1:
Still, he knew what had to be done. Gathering courage, Mark announced, “I don’t want to play basketball anymore.” The smiles on his parents’ faces froze instantly. “What do you mean?” his father asked in surprise. Taking a deep breath, Mark explained that his true passion was cheerleading although he was good at basketball. The room fell silent. His parents exchanged confused looks, struggling to understand. Mark felt his heart pounding but continued, saying he had been training for months. Just when the tension seemed unbearable, his mother finally spoke gently, “If this is what you really love, you deserve a chance — and we’ll always stand by you.” His father hesitated, then nodded slowly.
A week later, it was time for the cheerleader audition. Standing on the field, Mark felt a mix of nervousness and excitement. Remembering the countless hours of practice, he pushed aside his doubts and focused on every move. When the music started, he jumped, turned and lifted with confidence. His strength and determination impressed the judges and the crowd. When the results were announced, Mark heard his name among those selected. At that moment, he spotted his parents in the stands, clapping proudly. He realized that by following his heart, he had finally stepped out of his brother’s shadow and started his own journey.
Version 2:
Still, he knew what had to be done. Taking a deep breath, he gathered the courage to speak. His parents’ eager faces filled him with guilt, but he could no longer hide the truth. With a steady voice, he told them that basketball was never his dream. Instead, his heart belonged to cheerleading. The room fell into a heavy silence. His father’s proud expression crumbled into disbelief, while his mother stared at him as if seeing a stranger. Mark felt the weight of their unspoken disappointment pressing down on him. Just then, Reggie stepped forward. Without a word, he placed a firm hand on Mark’s shoulder and nodded — a small gesture that spoke volumes. Tears welled in Mark’s eyes. His family didn’t fully understand yet, but at least they were willing to listen.
A week later, it was time for the cheerleader audition. Mark’s heart hammered against his ribs as he walked onto the gym floor. Around him, dozens of talented athletes moved with grace and power. When his name was called, he stepped onto the mat, shut out the noise, and let his body take over. Every jump, every spin, every tumbling pass was a testament to months of secret sweat and sacrifice. The moves that once felt clumsy now flowed like music. As he struck his final pose, the room erupted in applause. Through the crowd, he spotted his family — his mother wiping tears, his father clapping with genuine pride, and Reggie cheering louder than anyone. Days later, when the team list was posted, Mark’s name was there. He was no longer chasing someone else’s glory. He had found his own.

A. All roads lead to Rome. B. Every cloud has a silver lining.
