France is home to many lovely towns, each with its own unique charm. From the sunny south to the fairy-tale east, these four towns welcome visitors with artistic treasures, rich history, beautiful views, and lively markets, offering a taste of the country’s culture and beauty.
Arles, Provence
Arles is a small town known for its connection to Vincent van Gogh. He lived and painted here for over a year, creating hundreds of artworks. Gordes, Provence
Gordes sits high on a rocky hill in the Luberon mountains, overlooking a wide green valley. Its stone houses rise on the terraces, shining golden in the sunlight. On Tuesday mornings, the small market is filled with lavender soap, cheese, and baskets. The breathtaking sunset over the Luberon valley confirms Gordes as one of the most beautiful spots in Provence.
Sarlat-la-Canéda, Dordogne

Markets are held year-round, but the most famous is the Christmas Market. During the festive season, the streets are brightly lit, and the air is filled with the scent of gingerbread and wine, creating a truly wonderful atmosphere.

Growing up in America as a child of first-generation Chinese immigrants, I was used to living in two worlds. But as I grew older, the Chinese side faded away. While I happily accepted the red envelopes during Lunar New Year and consumed mooncakes on the Mid-Autumn Festival, I didn’t feel connected to the culture.
Before my children were born, I had already decided that I would teach them Mandarin (普通话). I felt that they ought to be able to speak the language of their heritage.
Parenting books advised describing your actions while playing with your children, so I started digging out the long-buried words during every activity: “ball”, “eat”, “sleep”, “play”. However, as this exercise continued, the gaps in my Mandarin became more and more obvious. Luckily, the ready availability of Chinese language media — from books to television shows to music — made things much easier. As they grew older, I took them to the local library where the tale of the Monkey King and the legend of Chang’e immediately caught their imagination.
When I see my son converse with his grandfather in Mandarin or when my daughter insists on fish for Lunar New Year, the time spent reading all those books closely feels well-spent.
Last fall, my youngest son recited Li Bai’s “Quiet Night Thoughts” for the Moon Festival performance at his preschool. His voice rang out with confidence and his arms swept up to indicate the moon above. Joy and wonder lit up my father’s face as he listened to the familiar verses from the mouth of his grandson.
Decades ago, my Chinese teacher explained to me how the moon connects all those who seek its light, no matter how far apart they are. So, too, does language. It influences culture and history, and connects future generations to past ones.

5. How did the author teach her children Mandarin?
A. Talking about her daily routine. B. Sending them to a Chinese teacher.
C. Buying them ancient Chinese storybooks. D. Making use of various Chinese-based resources.
6. Which of the following can best describe the author?
A. Ambitious. B. Devoted. C. Proud. D. Optimistic.
7. What does the author mainly want to tell us?
A. Parenting books often give useless advice.
B. Language links us to our family and our past.
C. Parents should read to their children every day.
D. Learning Chinese is important for overseas families.
C 5. D 6. B 7. B

C
We live in a culture obsessed with winning. Gold medals, bestseller lists, championships, and Nobel Prizes are the markers of glory. The spotlight shines brightest on the people who cross the finish line first. But what about the “almosts”? People who nearly succeed but finally fail seldom appear in wonderful moment recordings. Their hard work goes unnoticed together with themselves.
But the truth is that the “almosts” aren’t failures. They often bend the world in directions we don’t notice until much later. Sometimes, they push society forward more than the celebrated victors.
Katherine Johnson was a mathematician at NASA whose calculations made spaceflight possible. For decades, her work went unmentioned while the spotlight fell on the astronauts. Yet, without her, those rockets might never have left the ground. The list stretches on: athletes who changed training standards even when they didn’t win, activists who planted seeds of change they wouldn’t live to see, musicians whose records failed commercially but influenced entire generations of artists. Being the first person through the door often means you won’t get the glory. But by breaking that ground, you make it easier for someone else to step through.
The “almosts” rarely stand on the podium (领奖台), but they remind us that success is about daring to set out in the first place. Their effort is integral even without applause, and their struggle itself has meaning. These stories belong to all of us because most of us are “almosts” in some part of our lives. Few of us will find ourselves in first place, yet we matter.
The “almosts” live in the delicate space between the unknown and legend. In that space, they quietly keep the world moving forward.
8. What do we know about the “almosts” from the first paragraph?
A. They are considered failures.
B. Their efforts are often ignored.
C. Their road to the top is difficult.
D. They are frequently misunderstood.
9. Why is Katherine Johnson mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. To explain how rockets were sent into space.
B. To show that women can work well in science.
C. To prove that NASA uses many mathematicians.
D. To give an example of a valued but unsung figure.
10. What is the author’s attitude towards those “almosts”?
A. Appreciative. B. Doubtful. C. Critical. D. Unconcerned.
11. Which can be the most suitable title for the text?
A. The Price of Glory. B. The Path to Greatness.
C. The Power of the “Almosts”. D. The Wisdom of the “Almosts”.
B 9. D 10. A 11. C
根据第一段中“But what about the “almosts”? People who nearly succeed but finally fail seldom appear in wonderful moment recordings. Their hard work goes unnoticed together with themselves.(但那些“几乎成功者”呢?那些几乎成功但最终失败的人很少出现在精彩时刻的录像中。他们的辛勤工作和他们自己一样不被注意。)”可知,这些“几乎成功者”的努力常常被人们忽视。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Katherine Johnson was a mathematician at NASA whose calculations made spaceflight possible. For decades, her work went unmentioned while the spotlight fell on the astronauts. Yet, without her, those rockets might never have left the ground.(凯瑟琳·约翰逊是NASA的一位数学家,她的计算使太空飞行成为可能。几十年来,她的工作无人提及,而聚光灯却落在宇航员身上。然而,没有她,那些火箭可能永远不会离开地面。)”可知,作者提到凯瑟琳·约翰逊是为了举例说明一位做出巨大贡献却未被歌颂的无名英雄。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“But the truth is that the “almosts” aren’t failures. They often bend the world in directions we don’t notice until much later. Sometimes, they push society forward more than the celebrated victors.(但事实是,“几乎成功者”并不是失败者。他们常常把世界弯向我们很久以后才会注意到的方向。有时,他们比著名的胜利者更能推动社会进步。)”以及最后一段“The “almosts” live in the delicate space between the unknown and legend. In that space, they quietly keep the world moving forward.(“几乎成功者”生活在未知与传奇之间的微妙空间里。在那个空间里,他们默默地推动世界向前发展。)”可知,作者对这些“几乎成功者”持高度肯定和赞赏的态度。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第二段“But the truth is that the “almosts” aren’t failures. They often bend the world in directions we don’t notice until much later. Sometimes, they push society forward more than the celebrated victors.(但事实是,“几乎成功者”并不是失败者。他们常常把世界弯向我们很久以后才会注意到的方向。有时,他们比著名的胜利者更能推动社会进步。)”和最后一段中“The “almosts” live in the delicate space between the unknown and legend. In that space, they quietly keep the world moving forward.(“几乎成功者”生活在未知与传奇之间的微妙空间里。在那个空间里,他们默默地推动世界向前发展。)”可知,文章通篇强调这些“几乎成功者”虽未获得最终荣誉,却在幕后推动了社会进步,具有巨大力量。C项“The Power of the “Almosts”(“几乎成功者”的力量)”最能概括文章主旨,适合作文章标题。
D
Imagine walking through a garden after sunset. We don’t need to turn the outdoor lights on; the space is already lit by a soft glow (微光) from common houseplants along the path. Now, researchers have taken a step toward making that scene a reality.
A team of scientists at South China Agricultural University has managed to create succulents (多肉植物) that glow in the dark. They injected the plants with strontium aluminate (铝酸锶), the same material used in glow-in-the-dark stars children sometimes stick to their bedroom ceilings. This material can naturally absorb sunlight or LED light and release it slowly and steadily. Moreover, they found that the succulents can glow in multiple different colors, forming a rainbow of lights — even in the same succulent.
The scientists experimented with various plants, including bok choy and golden pothos, but found that succulents were uniquely suitable. They produced a strong glow due to their leaves’ thin, uniform, and evenly distributed channels, which enabled the large particles to spread more successfully. The researchers even constructed a glowing wall with 56 succulent plants, which could light nearby objects and even enable them to read a text.
After being recharged, each succulent glowed for about two hours. However, their glow diminished overtime. So, the next step is to improve the longevity of the plants’ glow. The researchers also note that the impact of the injected particles on the plants’ long-term health is still unclear, so further safety testing will be required.
“In the world of Avatar, glowing plants light up an entire ecosystem. We want to make that vision possible using materials we already work with in the lab,” says Shuting Liu, first author of the research. The team hopes their work, which is still in the early phases, will one day pave the way for a novel sustainable lighting system. “Imagine glowing trees replacing streetlights,” Liu adds.
12. What do we know about the glow-in-the-dark succulents?
A. They can change into different colors. B. They can recharge with exposure to light.
C. They rely mainly on sunlight for energy. D. They need to be planted in special soil
13. What made succulents perform better than other plants in the experiment?
A. Their unique leaf structures. B. Their strong root systems.
C. Their ability to absorb light. D. Their resistance to chemicals.
14. What does the underlined word “diminished” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. appeared. B. remained. C. brightened. D. weakened
15. What can we expect of the new lighting technology?
A. It will provide a sustainable lighting solution. B. It will become affordable for most people.
C. It will be applied in various fields soon. D. It will revolutionize traditional lighting systems.
B 13. A 14. D 15. A
根据第二段“This material can naturally absorb sunlight or LED light and release it slowly and steadily.(这种材料能够自然地吸收阳光或LED光,并以缓慢而稳定的速率将其释放出来)”可知,这些夜光多肉植物可以通过接受光照来恢复能量。
根据第三段“They produced a strong glow due to their leaves’ thin, uniform, and evenly distributed channels, which enabled the large particles to spread more successfully.(由于它们叶子内部的通道细小、均匀且分布均匀,这使得较大的颗粒能够更有效地扩散开来,从而产生了强烈的光芒)”可知,在实验中,多肉植物的表现优于其他植物是因为它们独特的叶片结构。
根据划线词上文“After being recharged, each succulent glowed for about two hours.( 充电后,每株多肉植物都会发光约两个小时)”以及后文“So, the next step is to improve the longevity of the plants’ glow.(所以,接下来要做的就是延长植物发光的持续时间)”可知,多肉每次发光约两小时,后续发光效果会慢慢变弱,所以要延长发光时长。
根据最后一段“The team hopes their work, which is still in the early phases, will one day pave the way for a novel sustainable lighting system. “Imagine glowing trees replacing streetlights,” Liu adds.(该团队希望他们的这项工作(目前仍处于初期阶段)能够有一天为一种新型的可持续照明系统铺平道路。“想象一下,会发光的树木取代路灯的情景吧。”刘补充道)”可知,这种新的照明技术将提供一种可持续的照明解决方案。

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Six-year-old Leo was born with a problem in his right leg. He needed a stick to walk. When he said he wanted to learn swimming, his whole family was surprised. “In the water, there’s no ground to stop me. I can ‘run’ like everyone else,” Leo said, holding his hands closely with strong hope in his eyes.
When Leo walked into the swimming pool for the first time, the cold water reached his stomach. Suddenly, his right leg lost control, and he started to sink (下沉). Coach Lisa quickly caught him and said softly, “Don’t be afraid. The water will hold you up.” But the training was much harder than Leo had thought. Kicking, which others learned easily, made Leo struggle a lot. His right leg just couldn’t move in the proper way. He could only swim two meters before choking (窒息) on water.
After about one month, Leo watched other kids swimming freely. He sat by the pool and wiped his tears: “I can never do this. I want to give up.” His mom sat by his side and said, “Look, Leo. At first, you couldn’t even stand in the water. But now you can swim five meters — that’s progress!” Coach Lisa also came over with a float (浮板): “Let’s try a new way. We’ ll practice using your left arm to swim first, and use a float for your right leg.”
The days of trying again were still full of challenges. One night, Leo’s right leg hurt so badly that he couldn’t fall asleep at all. The next morning, Leo refused to go to the pool, but his mother still drove him there. When Coach Lisa came to check on him, she brought along some good news. “The city’s disabled swimming competition is coming soon,” Coach Lisa said. “You’re getting faster and stronger, Leo. And I’ve signed you up for this competition.”
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;

The competition day soon came, and Leo appeared at the starting point confidently. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Hearing those words, Leo felt greatly encouraged. He forgot the pain in his right leg at once and looked at Coach Lisa with bright eyes. Every day after that, he trained harder than before. He practiced arm strokes hundreds of times until his shoulders ached, and kept trying kicking even when his leg felt weak. His mom cheered for him by the pool, and Coach Lisa always corrected his postures patiently. Leo never complained again — he knew the competition was his chance to prove he could do it. He even started to imagine himself swimming bravely in the pool, with everyone cheering for him.
The competition day soon came, and Leo appeared at the starting point confidently. He knew he was well prepared. When the gun rang, he jumped into the water and swam as hard as he could. His right leg still didn’t move as smoothly as others, but he tried his best to push forward. The cheers from his family and Coach Lisa kept him going. Finally, he touched the finish line! Though he took third place, Leo raised his head proudly with tears of joy. Holding the medal, he realized he had not only shown everyone he could swim, but also found true freedom in the water — freedom from limits, freedom to chase his dreams.

Arles, Provence
Arles is a small town known for its connection to Vincent van Gogh. He lived and painted here for over a year, creating hundreds of artworks. The town’s Roman ruins and narrow streets inspired many of his masterpieces.
4. What do we know about the author as a child?
A. She travelled between two countries when young.
B. She was brought up in an all-English environment.
C. She once lost her sense of belonging to Chinese culture.
D. She was attracted to traditional Chinese festivals the most.
