This unit is about Launching Your Career. The Reading and Thinking text is an expository essay titled "Get a Head Start on Your Future Career". It has seven paragraphs: why career matters and when to start thinking about it; what career aptitude tests are and how they work; and a conclusion that tests are useful tools but passion is the real secret to a good career. The text is suitable for teaching expository structure analysis and career planning awareness.

Present four pictures of Wuhan's key industries on the screen — Optics Valley, Auto City, Biolake, and the university town. Walk students through the matching task. Then put up the three discussion questions and have them chat with their deskmate. Invite 1-2 pairs to share.

① Optics Valley (Guanggu)              (    )   A. New energy vehicle industry base

② Auto City (Chegu)                   (    )   B. Optics and electronics industry cluster

③ Biolake (Guanggu Bio-lake)          (    )   C. University town with many colleges

④ Wuhan University Area                (    )   D. Biomedicine and health industry park

(1) When someone asks you "What do you want to do in the future?", what do you usually say? Do you have a clear answer?

(2) Wuhan has many industries — optics, cars, biomedicine, and more. Which one interests you most? Why?

(3) The article is titled "Get a Head Start on Your Future Career". Before you read, write down two guesses about what this text will talk about.

【设计说明】用武汉光谷、车谷这些身边的产业切入,学生有话说。先问"你未来想干什么",大部分学生答不上来,自然引入课文主题。

Step 2  Skimming (4 min)

Question

Answer from the text

Why is career important?

When is the best time to start thinking about career?

What is one effective way to explore career options?

What is very important when taking the test?

What is the secret to a good career?

Activity 2  Read between the lines  【对应难点1】

Project the four underlined sentences one by one. Have students form groups of four and talk about the deeper meaning behind each sentence — encourage them to dig beyond the literal level. After 4 minutes, open the floor for class discussion.

(1) "The career you have defines your life." (Para. 1)

Do you agree? How much does your job define who you are?

(2) "Many people bounce around from one job to another, not really knowing what they want to do." (Para. 2)

What does "bounce around" mean? Have you seen people like this?

(3) "It is important to be honest when you are completing the test." (Para. 4)

Why does honesty matter? What happens if you lie on a career test?

(4) "The secret to a good career is finding something that you are passionate about." (Para. 7)

Is passion enough? What else do you need besides passion?

Activity 3  Vocabulary in context  【对应重点3】

Show the four sentences on the screen, with the target words underlined. Tell students to work out the meanings from context — no dictionaries allowed. Go through the answers together. Stress the importance of context guessing as a reading skill.

(1) One effective way to get some insight on a possible career path is to complete a "career aptitude test".  aptitude = ____________

(2) The test gives you insight into what kind of work you might enjoy.  insight = ____________
