One day, I was walking across campus when I spotted one of my students sitting on a bench, her face turned toward the sun, her eyes closed. I went over and asked if 1 could sit with her. When I asked how she was doing, she explained that her phone had “crashed”, and she was bored.
The moment reminded me how deeply we’re shaped by the digital world. Our devices, including computers, smartphones and the never-ending flow of online content, keep feeding us fresh updates, training us to expect continued stimulation. We’ve become trapped in a cycle of response, as if any pause were a problem to be solved.
My thoughts wandered back to my childhood—those afternoons spent staring out the window, doing nothing in particular. What felt like aimless boredom was actually a retooling period when my mind needed to reset before it could rediscover joy and invention. Before I knew it, I was building models, climbing trees, or playing instruments.
“What are your personal interests?” I asked my student. Her eyes lit up as she showed me her amazing artwork. “Have you ever felt bored while drawing?” I asked. “Never, ” she said, though ideas didn’t always come easily. “Does that annoy you?” “No,” she responded, “because I know that something will eventually pop into my head. When it does, it’s a real rush of satisfaction.”
That was it. That was exactly it. She needed to walk in the desert before arriving at the oasis (绿洲). She needed to experience a complete lack of inspiration before it struck her. This must have been what Ralph Waldo Emerson meant when he wrote, “Guard well your spare moments. They are like uncut diamonds...Improve them and they will become the brightest gems (宝石) in a useful life.”
As I left, I told her the truth:“I envy you”—not for her dead device, but for the creative space it had opened.
4. What is the author’s main concern over digital devices?
A. They cause unease during quiet pauses.
B. They require frequent software updates.
C. They often stop working without warning.
D. They may replace face-to-face interaction.
5. What role did boredom play in the author’s childhood?
A. It taught him to be patient. B. It gave him time to recharge.
C. It developed his rich imagination. D. It helped him avoid digital distraction.
6. What can we learn from the student’s response?
A. True artists never feel bored. B. Drawing requires special training.
C. Inspiration comes after waiting. D. Satisfaction begins when desire ends.
7. What advice is the author implying by saying“I envy you”?
A. Use phone less. B. Hold tight to youth.
C. Search for more treasure. D. Spare time for creativity.
A 5. B 6. C 7. D
根据第二段“Our devices, including computers, smartphones and the never-ending flow of online content, keep feeding us fresh updates, training us to expect continued stimulation. We’ve become trapped in a cycle of response, as if any pause were a problem to be solved. (我们的设备不断推送新内容,训练我们持续寻求刺激;我们陷入了“一停就要回应”的循环,好像任何停顿都是必须解决的问题)”可知,作者担忧的是数字设备让人在安静时感到不安。故选A项。
根据第三段“My thoughts wandered back to my childhood—those afternoons spent staring out the window, doing nothing in particular. What felt like aimless boredom was actually a retooling period when my mind needed to reset before it could rediscover joy and invention.(我回想起自己的童年——那些下午,我凝视着窗外,没做什么特别的事。那种看似漫无目的的无聊,实际上是一段重新调整的时期,那时我的大脑需要重置,之后才能重新发现快乐与创造力)”可知,童年那段无所事事的空白,实质上是大脑重启,给作者“充电”时间。故选B项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段学生说的“I know that something will eventually pop into my head. When it does, it’s a real rush of satisfaction.(我知道灵感终究会出现;当它到来时,会带来真正的满足感)”可知,灵感会在耐心等待之后降临。
根据第六段作者道别时所说“As I left, I told her the truth:‘I envy you’—not for her dead device, but for the creative space it had opened. (当我离开时,我向她坦诚:‘我羡慕你’——不是羡慕她那坏掉的手机,而是羡慕它打开的那片创意空间)”可知,作者明确说明“羡慕的不是学生故障的手机,而是手机故障带来的创作空间,可见其隐含建议是“为创造力留出时间。故选D项。
C
An ancient Chinese exercise practice that combines slow movements, controlled breathing, and meditation may help lower blood pressure effectively, according to a large randomized clinical trial published in the flagship journal of the American College of Cardiology.
The studied practice, called baduanjin, is a traditional Chinese exercise made up of eight structured movements that combine aerobic (有氧的) activity, flexibility training, and mindfulness. A typical session lasts about 10-15 minutes and does not require equipment or extensive training, and is considered low-to-moderate intensity, making one able to maintain it over time.
The study followed 216 adults, who were at least 40 years old and had blood pressure readings between 130-139 mm Hg, a range classified as stage 1 hypertension (高血压) under ACC/AHA guidelines. They were divided into three groups for the yearlong intervention: baduanjin practice, self-directed exercise, or fast walking.
Compared with self-directed exercise alone, people practicing baduanjin five days a week lowered their 24-hour blood pressure by about 3 mm Hg and reduced office blood pressure by 5 mm Hg after both three months and one year. Researchers noted that these reductions are similar to results seen with some first-line blood pressure medications. The study also found that baduanjin produced results and safety outcomes comparable to fast walking after one year.
One of the most notable findings was that participants maintained the benefits even without continued monitoring or supervision. Failing to maintain long-term participation is often one of the main impediments for lifestyle-based health interventions.
“Baduanjin has been practiced in China for over 800 years, and this study demonstrates how it can be validated through high-quality randomized research,” said Harlan M. Krumholz, Jr. Professor at the Yale School of Medicine. “The blood pressure effect size is similar to that seen in landmark drug trials, but achieved without medication, cost or side effects. This makes it highly scalable for community-based prevention, including in resource-limited settings.”
8. What do we know about baduanjin?
A. It is easily accessible. B. It has a complex routine.
C. It involves high intensity. D. It needs specific training.
9. What did the clinical trial reveal about baduanjin?
A. It beats fast walking in a short time. B. It shows little effect within one year.
C. It requires constant medical supervision. D. It works like some blood pressure drugs.
10. What does the underlined word “impediments” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Priorities. B. Features. C. Obstacles. D. Mistakes.
11. What do Harlan M. Krumholz’s words mean?
A. Practicing baduanjin is resource-limited. B. Baduanjin deserves wide popularization.
C. Baduanjin’s value needs more drug trials. D. Baduanjin takes effect faster than drugs.
A 9. D 10. C 11. B
根据第二段“A typical session lasts about 10-15 minutes and does not require equipment or extensive training, and is considered low-to moderate intensity, making one able to maintain it over time. (一次练习大约持续10—15分钟,不需要器械,也无需大量训练,属于低到中等强度,人们可以长期坚持练习。)”可知,八段锦简单易开展。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Researchers noted that these reductions are similar to results seen with some first-line blood pressure medications. (研究人员指出,八段锦带来的降压效果和部分一线降压药物的效果相近。)”可知,临床试验表明八段锦的效果和部分降压药物类似。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第五段“One of the most notable findings was that participants maintained the benefits even without continued monitoring or supervision. Failing to maintain long-term participation is often one of the main impediments for lifestyle-based health interventions. (最值得关注的发现之一是,即便没有持续监测与监督,参与者依旧可以保持练习带来的益处。无法做到长期坚持,往往是生活方式类健康干预的主要impediments之一。)”可知,无法长期坚持属于开展这类健康干预的阻碍,impediments意为“障碍”,与C选项“Obstacles (阻碍,障碍)”含义一致。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“This makes it highly scalable for community-based prevention, including in resource-limited settings. (这使得八段锦可以大规模推广用于社区预防,即便在资源有限的地区也适用。)”可知,Harlan M. Krumholz认为八段锦值得广泛推广。
D
In the fall of 1944, Norman Borlaug moved to Mexico to produce a new variety of wheat. Finally, he got lucky. His wheat proved to be not just high-yielding (高产的) but also surprisingly varied. But, as proud as he was of his seeds, Borlaug also saw their limits. When he received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970, he used his Nobel address to caution against self-satisfaction. The new varieties of wheat he had reproduced represented, he said, only a “temporary success in man’s war against hunger.” The world’s population, he worried out loud, would continue to grow, and eventually the demand for food would again outpace the supply.
Now in 2025, Michael Grunwald says in his new book, We Are Eating the Earth, that humanity is facing “some terrible math.” On one side of the equation is the growing need for food. On the other side is climate change. Agriculture is a major source of greenhouse gases, depending on how you calculate it. We need to “feed the world without frying the world” is how Grunwald puts it.
What’s to be done? A good first step, Grunwald advocates, would be to stop making things worse. We could start with biofuels. Every year in the US, some fourteen billion gallons of a corn-based additive get mixed in gas. The practice is supposed to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions. Almost certainly, though, it has the opposite outcome. Redirecting corn from grocery stores to gas tanks pushes up goods prices — which, in turn, encourages farmers to change forests into cropland. Since forests store a lot of carbon, cutting down them increases atmospheric \( CO_2 \). Grunwald quotes a song:
Biofuel use is gonna burn up all my food
Deforestation can only ruin our nation.
Immoral men with that bad intention
What is your plan? Is it life or ruination?
Were it not for Borlaug, the world in the late twentieth century would have been a very different place. In the eight years since Borlaug arrived in Mexico, farming in much of the world has been transformed. New tools that could make farms even more productive are constantly being developed. At the same time, the world, too, has been transformed, by such things as climate change, groundwater exhaustion, and soil pollution. The new tools and the new threats are bound up in each other—two sides, as it were, of the same leaf. If it is reasonable to imagine that we will, somehow or other, find ways to feed ten billion people, it is also reasonable to fear how much damage will be done in the process.
12. What are the first two paragraphs mainly about?
A. The downstream consequences of food shortage.
B. The significance of inventing high-productive seeds.
C. The problems humans face in the course of development.
D. Two contrary perspectives on the growing demand for food.
13. Why does the author mention the song?
A. To illustrate a current attempt of biofuels.
B. To reveal convention is still better than innovation.
C. To raise public awareness of redirecting food for fuel.
D. To prove good intentions may bring about bad results.
14. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Farming transformation lacks recognition.
B. The issue of hunger should be prioritized.
C. It is urgent to treat human-caused damage.
D. We need view food and environment as one.
15. Which would be the best title for the passage?
A. Can We Satisfy Our Growing Appetites?
B. Farming: Will It Be Life without Ruination?
C. Is Agriculture to Blame for Climate Change?
D. Environment: Are We Transforming or Harming It?
C 13. D 14. D 15. B
根据第一段“The new varieties of wheat he had reproduced represented, he said, only a “temporary success in man’s war against hunger.” The world’s population, he worried out loud, would continue to grow, and eventually the demand for food would again outpace the supply. (他说,他培育的小麦新品种只是“人类对抗饥饿战争的暂时成功”。他大声地担心,世界人口将继续增长,最终对食物的需求将再次超过供应。)”和第二段“On one side of the equation is the growing need for food. On the other side is climate change. Agriculture is a major source of greenhouse gases, depending on how you calculate it. We need to “feed the world without frying the world” is how Grunwald puts it.
第三段“Every year in the US, some fourteen billion gallons of a corn-based additive get mixed in gas.
文章核心矛盾是“满足粮食需求”与“保护地球环境”的冲突,再根据最后一段“New tools that could make farms even more productive are constantly being developed. At the same time, the world, too, has been transformed, by such things as climate change, groundwater exhaustion, and soil pollution. The new tools and the new threats are bound up in each other — two sides, as it were, of the same leaf.
In the digital age, we interact with others online so much, so it’s especially important to be aware of digital etiquette (礼节). Here is something about digital etiquette you need to know.
Keep things respectful, truthful, and kind in your online interactions. When you’re commenting, posting, or sending a message on the Internet, remember that you’re interacting with actual people who have feelings and deserve respect. Treat others the way you would want to be treated. ____16____
Review messages, comments, and posts before sending. ____17____ Unfortunately, this often leads to hurt feelings, and you’ll often end up regretting it later — especially because what you say online is memorialized forever. To avoid this regret, it helps to pause and reflect before posting or sending something. As part of that reflection, reread what you’ve written, and make sure it’s truthful, respectful, and fair.
____18____ If you see a negative comment, you may be tempted to fight back with some heated words of your own. Though this may feel good in the moment, it only escalates things and makes them worse. Plus, unlike verbal arguments, online conversations can be preserved forever, so your words can come back to bite you in the future. ____19____
Be mindful of your audience. ____20____ The key is to adjust your behavior appropriately based on the relationship you have with the receiver and the purpose of your message. It’s appropriate to use informal language when you are sending a message in a group chat with your friends. If you’re posting a message in your online classroom for school, nevertheless, use proper spelling and punctuation, as well as more formal language.
A. Stay on topic in group chats.
B. The wisest response is to make positive remarks.
C. Digital etiquette will vary from setting to setting.
D. Don’t engage in digital drama in the comment section.
E. In the heat of the moment, it’s easy to react too quickly.
F. This golden rule applies just as much online as it does in person.
G. What seems harmless to you may be embarrassing or unsafe for them.

My grandfather is a master of Nixing Pottery (坭兴陶), a craft passed down through four generations in our family. Growing up in Qinzhou, I spent hours in his studio, amazed at how a simple piece of clay could become an elegant teapot under his weathered hands. To me, the hands held magic.
However, things are gradually changing nowadays. My world was filled with coding, 3D modeling software, and news about AI. During a recent visit home, I noticed Grandpa struggling with a complex traditional design. His glasses were fogged from the heat of the kiln (窑), and his hands trembled slightly as he carved fine details.
“Grandpa, there is an app for that now,” I joked, showing him my tablet. On the screen was a generative AI program that could create thousands of pottery designs in seconds. “This could help you imagine new patterns.” I pulled up a modern vase design generated by AI. “We could even use a 3D printer for the rough shape, and then you do the finishing touches. It’s what they call new quality productive forces—using technology to upgrade traditional industries!”
To my surprise, Grandpa didn’t look impressed. He put down his carving knife and gazed at me, his eyes filled with pride and concern. “So, the machine creates pottery, and I just touch it up?” he asked quietly. “Your new forces might be fast, but can they feel the clay? Do they know that purple clay from the east bank has a different quality than the clay from the west?” He gestured to the stack (一堆) of his life’s work, “A real piece of Nixing Pottery carries the potter’s patience and our family’s stories. I’m not against progress, but I fear we’re losing the soul.”
I looked at the perfect but cold image on my screen, and then at the half-finished teapot on his wheel—uneven, yet warm and alive. Confusion washed over me. Was I right to bring technology home, or was I threatening the heritage I loved?
注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150个左右;
I stared at the teapot and had an idea.

That night, Grandpa carefully placed our creation in the kiln.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I stared at the teapot and had an idea. Instead of letting AI replace Grandpa’s craftsmanship, I suggested we combine technology with tradition. I could use AI to collect and sort various ancient Nixing patterns for reference, while Grandpa kept shaping the clay and carving details with his experienced hands. Grandpa’s eyes lit up. He agreed to have a try. We spent the whole afternoon together. AI offered inspiring ideas, and Grandpa breathed life into the clay with his skilled fingers. Every cut he made carried his understanding of the local clay.
That night, Grandpa carefully placed our creation in the kiln. He told me that technology was a helpful tool rather than a replacement. True heritage lay in the craftsman’s feelings and stories buried in the clay. I realized that progress and tradition could go hand in hand. Advanced technology brings innovation, while human devotion preserves the soul of traditional crafts. Technology helped preserve old skills, while human warmth kept the soul of Nixing Pottery alive. Only in this way can the time-honored craft be passed down through generations.

注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150个左右;
