To search for literary talents. B Last year, my husband and I decided to make our 12-storey building more of a community. We live in a small rented apartment in Park Merced, a large housing development. I would call us lower-middle-class. A lot of nurses, bus drivers, and tradesmen live here, many of them 1st or 2nd generation immigrants. We’re all renters. Renters come and go and tend not to see the buildings they live in as their home. But it can be done. We started with a monthly two-hour social in the building lobby (门厅) on the second Friday of each month. Some people came, between 15-30 each time. The events lasted two hours, but there wasn’t much to do besides talking, eating snacks and drinking juice. The socials were nice, but most residents gave them a miss. Then one day I was on the nearby campus of San Francisco State University. A young man from a social club for students had a big sign about “Building Community”. I asked, “How do you do that?” He said they tried to get people to share something about themselves with at least one other person. That made much sense to me. I bought a large world map. At the social, I taped it on the lobby wall with signs saying “Where We’re From. Put a green sticker where you were born and yellow stickers where your grandparents were born.” People put up their stickers and looked where other people came from. We left the map up overnight, and the next day, Saturday, more people played. I planned to leave the map and stickers up for a month or more. They certainly made the lobby more interesting than the housing project look it usually has. I see there will be challenges, but I also know a strong community will help us live good lives. I have the time and energy to do this work. 4. What trouble did the author have building a community? A. The community was rather poor. B. She was lacking in enough money. C. Her neighbors were all immigrants. D. Renters had no sense of belonging. 5. How did the author find her earlier events? A. Fruitful. B. Messy. C. Uninteresting. D. Inspiring. 6. What did the author do in order to change the socials? A. Sharing friendly stickers. B. Adding foods and drinks. C. Asking neighbors for help. D. Adopting a sharing game. 7. Which of the following best describes the author? A. Responsible and particular. B. Insightful and determined. C. Demanding and sympathetic. D. Knowledgeable and modest. C California researchers developed a glove with electronic sensors that can translate American Sign Language (ASL) into English in real time through an app on your smartphone. Unlike its previous models, the new glove is lightweight, inexpensive and long-lasting. The device could help remove communication barriers between signers and non-signers. Hopefully, this may open up an easy way for people who use sign language to communicate directly with non-signers without needing someone else to translate for them. The team worked with four people who are deaf and use ASL and had them repeat gestures up to 15 times while wearing the glove-like device, meanwhile teaching a machine how to recognize them. The glove has thin, stretchable sensors made from “electrically conducting yarns” (导电纱线) that run up each finger and change the movements into signals. These signals are sent to a “dollar-coin-sized” circuit (电路) board placed on the person’s wrist, which then wirelessly transfers them over to a smartphone. The system was able to recognize 660 hand motions and finger placements that stand for each letter in the English alphabet, different phrases and each number. The algorithm (计算程序) recognized the correct signs about 99% of the time, and in less than one second — or about a tone word per second. The researchers also placed sensors in between the participants’ eyebrows and on the sides of their mouths to “catch facial expressions that are a part of ASL”. The same exact hand-shape and movement can totally change meaning because of the facial expression that is used to accompany it. Take the word MUCH. The degree of how much can totally be determined by the facial expression alone while the sign stays the same. Researchers said the glove would need to learn more vocabulary and be able to translate signs faster in order to get a commercial version of it in stores. 8. Who is the new glove intended for? A. Translators. B. Deaf people. C. English learners. D. Sign language users. 9. What does Paragraph 3 mainly say about the new glove? A. Its parts. B. Its reliability. C. Its working principle. D. Its broad applications. 10. How do researchers improve the glove’s correctness of recognition? A. By connecting it to smartphones. B. By lengthening the time of catching gestures. C. By inputting more letters and words in English. D. By catching information from more facial expressions. 11. What will researchers do with the glove in the future? A. Improve its performance. B. Update its prospect. C. Bring it to the market soon. D. Extend its service life. D Perfectionism and punctuality are often at odds in the workplace. But according to a recent study, it is better to hand in a good-enough project on time rather than perfecting it through procrastination. Researchers surveyed thousands of people in the U.S. and U.K., including managers and others whose jobs included evaluating others. They presented participants with the same examples of work, and then asked them to rate it. But first, they mentioned whether it was either submitted early, right at the deadline or late. Respondents who were told it was late consistently rated the work as worse in quality than those who were told the same work was early or on time. The study also finds there isn’t much benefit to submitting work early since evaluators tended to rank work submitted before and at the deadline as the same quality. Furthermore, it didn’t matter how late the work was submitted, with one day or one week delays viewed just as negatively and that remained the case if the employee gave their manager advance warning. A field experiment was conducted in a high school in China that had students grade pieces of art in a staged contest. The art was on a piece of paper that also included the date it was submitted. Even though the kids were told to ignore all other details on the paper other than the art itself, the version submitted after the deadline received lower grades. That study makes the broader point that it doesn’t really matter who set the deadline. In the eyes of the evaluator, any miss is a meaningful miss. However, the reason behind the missed deadline mattered, researchers found. If it was due to forces beyond an employee’s control, evaluators didn’t end up with as negative a view of the work as they did when the reason was one within their control. “If the reason why you missed the deadline was beyond your control, you as the employee should let your manager know,” Maglio says. “That seems to be one of the few instances in which people cut you a break.” 12. What does the underlined word “procrastination” in paragraph 1 mean? A. Editing. B. Delay. C. Redrafting. D. Teamwork 13. What can be concluded from the research result? A. Submitting work early earns a boost in evaluations. B. Short delays get better evaluations than long delays. C. Late work gets worse evaluations than on-time work. D. Pre-communicated delays bring positive evaluations. 14. Why does the author mention the Chinese field experiment? A. The art itself rather than other details counts. B. Kids tend to judge submissions more objectively. C. A peer-to-peer evaluation can be an informative tool. D. The research finding holds true across age and culture. 15. What can be implied from the last paragraph? A. Communication around deadlines is vital. B. A hard deadline can often be adjusted. C. The evaluation strategy should be improved. D. Bosses need to care about employees. Life is full of options, some unimportant, some significant. But sometimes it can be hard to make the proper choice. Many people ignore unseen barriers affecting their choices. ____16____ The first barrier: some of us just find it hard to make a choice. Alice Boyes, writing for Harvard Business Review, tells us this can be connected to seeking perfect results, where people attempt to find an ideal way to any problem and are unable to advance when they can’t find one. ____17____ However, as surprising as it may seem, this difficulty in deciding might actually help us make the correct ones. ____18____ Susan Krauss in Psychology Today reminds us that people often make bad decisions because they base them on fixed thoughts rather than the real situation. She highlights a paper by researcher Iris Schneider which finds that hesitant people are more likely to look at different viewpoints and use them to reach a nicer decision. The third barrier comes from our own intelligence. David Robson, speaking to the BBC’s Crowd Science, tells us that intelligence can sometimes prevent people from making the right decision. People sometimes use their intelligence to create reasonable explanations for unreasonable ideas. ____19____ Jeff Bezos supports this view. Tech CEO Jason Fried recalls the Amazon founder saying that the people who were right most of the time were those who frequently changed their minds. So, perhaps it is not hesitation but rather intelligence, combined with quick decision-making and fixed ideas, that actually prevents us from making good choices. ____20____ Being slow to decide, on the other hand, could help us select the best option. A. Another barrier comes from people’s fixed thinking patterns. B. So what exactly holds us back from making sound decisions? C. Intelligent people are less likely to make ill-advised decisions. D. He holds the view that modesty contributes to sound decisions. E. Making quick judgments is generally considered a smarter way. F. It appears that difficulty in choosing will stop us from wise decisions. G. All these studies make us rethink the value of hesitation in decision-making. Free dog with every home sold For Soucy, the journey of selling homes is more than just finding the right house. Love is hidden in patience, ____41____ (responsible), sacrifice and quiet endurance (忍耐), ____42____ is also why letters take up such a special place in Chinese storytelling. Mom had insisted I go with her to pick up Dad from work. Across from Dad’s office is a bike store. That was the day my eleven-year-old eyes first saw the purple BMX Mongoose bike. From that day on, all I could think about was that bike. I even drew pictures of the bike in class. Every evening afterward, at five thirty, I eagerly went along with Mom to get Dad. And every day I told my parents, “I want that bike!” But they disagreed and replied that I had already had a perfectly good bike at home. I’d argue it was old and ugly, thinking that my happiness depended on that purple bike. Days later, I found the store had sold that bike. I knew I’d never be happy again. A week later, returning home from school, I tripped over something. Lying in the weeds near a river and some wooded lots, was a bike — the exact bike from the store. “Hey, whose bike is this?” I shouted, scanning the area. No one replied, and there was no one in sight. Maybe its owner didn’t want it any longer. I couldn’t leave it lying in the weeds. So I took it home and hid it behind the garage. Every day after school, I sat there, admiring it. But I didn’t feel like riding and didn’t feel as happy as I had thought. Thinking about the bike made my stomach tighten and uncomfortable. A few days later, during lunch at school, my friend said, “Did you hear about Tyler, in the other fifth-grade class? He lost his new purple BMX Mongoose bike he had just gotten for his birthday. He left it by a river while playing in the woods. It got dark, and he couldn’t find it.” “I’d never go off and leave a new bike like that. He doesn’t deserve to have that bike,” I replied. My friend added, “Kids say he’s nice. And they say Tyler is upset because his dad worked overtime to buy the bike for him.” For the rest of the day, I couldn’t stop thinking about Tyler. After school, I returned home and dragged to my room. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ “I know Tyler’s house,” Mom said. “I’ll drive you there.” ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 中山纪念中学2028届高二上学期英语科第一次段考试题 试卷共8页,卷面满分120分,折算成150分计入总分。 A Teen Summer Writing Fellowship at GrubStreet Center for Creative Writing If you are a high school student who loves writing, a creative writing summer camp can give you the opportunity to focus intensively on your craft. Hopefully, this may open up an easy way for people who use sign language to communicate directly with non-signers without needing someone else to translate for them.(该设备有助于消除手语使用者和非手语使用者之间的沟通障碍。 根据第三段“The glove has thin, stretchable sensors made from “electrically conducting yarns” (导电纱线) that run up each finger and change the movements into signals. These signals are sent to a “dollar-coin-sized” circuit (电路) board placed on the person’s wrist, which then wirelessly transfers them over to a smartphone.(这款手套内置由“导电纱线”制成的纤细可拉伸传感器,分布在每根手指上,将动作转化为信号。 根据第五段“The researchers also placed sensors in between the participants’ eyebrows and on the sides of their mouths to “catch facial expressions that are a part of ASL”.(研究人员还在参与者的眉间和嘴侧安放传感器,用来捕捉作为美式手语组成部分的面部表情。)” 根据最后一段“Researchers said the glove would need to learn more vocabulary and be able to translate signs faster in order to get a commercial version of it in stores.(研究人员表示,想要推出商用版本并上架销售,这款手套还需要学习更多词汇,并且提升手语翻译速度。)” D Perfectionism and punctuality are often at odds in the workplace. B 13. C 14. D 15. 根据第一段“Perfectionism and punctuality are often at odds in the workplace. But according to a recent study, it is better to hand in a good-enough project on time rather than perfecting it through procrastination.(在工作场所,完美主义和守时往往相互冲突。 根据第三段“Respondents who were told it was late consistently rated the work as worse in quality than those who were told the same work was early or on time.(被告知作品逾期的受访者,对作品质量的打分总是低于那些被告知同一份作品提前或按时提交的受访者。)” 根据第四段“A field experiment was conducted in a high school in China that had students grade pieces of art in a staged contest. The art was on a piece of paper that also included the date it was submitted. Even though the kids were told to ignore all other details on the paper other than the art itself, the version submitted after the deadline received lower grades. That study makes the broader point that it doesn’t really matter who set the deadline. In the eyes of the evaluator, any miss is a meaningful miss.(在中国一所中学开展了一项实地实验,实验让学生在一场模拟竞赛中给艺术品打分。 根据第五段““If the reason why you missed the deadline was beyond your control, you as the employee should let your manager know,” Maglio says. “That seems to be one of the few instances in which people cut you a break.”(“如果你未能按期完成的原因超出自身可控范围,作为员工应当告知你的经理,”马利奥说,“这似乎是少数能获得他人谅解的情况之一。”)” Life is full of options, some unimportant, some significant. B 17. F 18. A 19. D 20. 【16题详解】 根据上文“Life is full of options, some unimportant, some significant. But sometimes it can be hard to make the proper choice. Many people ignore unseen barriers affecting their choices.(人生充满各种选择,有些微不足道,有些却意义重大。 【17题详解】 根据上文“The first barrier: some of us just find it hard to make a choice. Alice Boyes, writing for Harvard Business Review, tells us this can be connected to seeking perfect results, where people attempt to find an ideal way to any problem and are unable to advance when they can’t find one.(第一个障碍:有些人只是难以做出选择。 【18题详解】 根据后文“Susan Krauss in Psychology Today reminds us that people often make bad decisions because they base them on fixed thoughts rather than the real situation. She highlights a paper by researcher Iris Schneider which finds that hesitant people are more likely to look at different viewpoints and use them to reach a nicer decision.(《今日心理学》的苏珊·克劳斯提醒我们,人们常常做出错误决策,因为他们依据固定的想法而非实际情况来做选择。 【19题详解】 根据上文“The third barrier comes from our own intelligence. David Robson, speaking to the BBC’s Crowd Science, tells us that intelligence can sometimes prevent people from making the right decision. People sometimes use their intelligence to create reasonable explanations for unreasonable ideas.(第三个障碍来自我们自身的智慧。 Tech CEO Jason Fried recalls the Amazon founder saying that the people who were right most of the time were those who frequently changed their minds.(杰夫·贝佐斯支持这一观点。 【20题详解】 根据上文“So, perhaps it is not hesitation but rather intelligence, combined with quick decision-making and fixed ideas, that actually prevents us from making good choices.(所以,也许真正阻碍我们做出正确选择的并非犹豫,而是智力与快速决策、固执观念的结合)”以及后文“Being slow to decide, on the other hand, could help us select the best option.(另一方面,放慢决策有助于我们选择最佳方案)”可知,空处前文总结了阻碍好决策的因素是智商、快速决策和固化思维,后文说决策慢反而能帮我们选到最优选项,G项“所有这些研究让我们重新思考决策过程中犹豫的价值”可衔接总结前文,引出后文对犹豫正向作用的表述。 Free dog with every home sold For Soucy, the journey of selling homes is more than just finding the right house. I sat in my parents’ car. “I’ll drive you there.” ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 After school, I returned home and dragged to my room. The guilt of keeping Tyler's bike hidden behind the garage weighed heavily on me. I couldn't enjoy having the bike while knowing that it rightfully belonged to someone else. I wanted to make things right. So I went to my mother and told her what had happened. My mother smiled and tapped me on the shoulder, gently saying, “I believe you have known what you should do to the bike.” “I know Tyler’s house,” Mom said. “I’ll drive you there.” My heart raced with a mix of nervousness and determination. I walked up to knock the door. “Hey Tyler, I'm really sorry that I hid it and caused you trouble.” To my great surprise, he did not blame. What I saw was a smile slowly spread across his face. I knew exactly what that smile meant -- forgiveness for me. From that day on, the purple BMX Mongoose bike was no longer important to me. What mattered was the friendship I had formed with Tyler, which also taught me the important values like honesty. 词汇激活 行为类 ①重压:weigh on sb/press on sb ②.拍:tap/pat ③.绽开笑容:a smile spread across one’s face/a smile shines on one’s face 情绪类 ①.愧疚/羞愧:guilt/shame ②.惊讶:surprise/amazement 【点睛】[高分句型1].
