Each of her objects had its place, but mine always hid somewhere. She even labeled (贴标签) everything. I always looked for everything. Over time, Kate got neater and I got messier. She would push my dirty clothing over, and I would lay my books on her tidy desk. We both got tired of each other. War broke out one evening. Kate came into the room. Soon, I heard her screaming,“Take your shoes away! Why under my bed!” Deafened, I saw my shoes flying at me.I jumped to my feet and started yelling. She yelled back louder. The room was filled with anger. We could not have stayed together for a single minute but for a phone call. Kate answered it. From her end of the conversation, I could tell right away her grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up she quickly crawled(爬) under her covers sobbing. Obviously, that was something she should not go through alone. All of a sudden, a warm feeling of sympathy rose up in my heart. Slowly, I collected the pencils, took back the books, made my bed, cleaned the socks and swept the floor, even on her side. I got so into my work that I even didn't notice Kate had sat up. She was watching, her tears dried and her expression one of disbelief. Then, she reached out her hands to grasp mine. I looked up into her eyes. She smiled at me,“Thanks.” Kate and I stayed roommates for the rest of the year We didn't always agree, but we learned the key to living together: giving in, cleaning up and holding on. 24. A. she was scared by Kate's anger B. she hated herself for being so messy C. she wanted to show her care D. she was asked by Kate to do so 26. How is Paragraph 1 mainly developed? A. By analyzing causes. B.. By showing differences. C. By describing a process. D. By following time order. 27. What might be the best title for the story? A. My Friend Kate B. Hard Work Pays Off C. How to Be Organized D. Learning to Be Roommates C It happened to me recently. I was telling someone how much I had enjoyed reading Barack Obama's Dreams From My Father and how it had changed my views of our President. A friend I was talking to agreed with me that it was, in his words,“a brilliantly(精彩地) written book”. However, he then went on to talk about Mr. Obama in a way which suggested he had no idea of his background at all. I sensed that I was talking to a book liar. And it seems that my friend is not the only one. Approximately two thirds of people have lied about reading a book which they haven't. In the World Book Day's“Report on Guilty Secrets”, Dreams From My Father is at number 9. The report lists ten books, and various authors, which people have lied about reading, and as I'm not one to lie too often (I'd hate to be caught out), I' ll admit here and now that I haven't read the entire top ten. But I am pleased to say that, unlike 42 percent of people,I have read the book at number one, George Orwell's 1984. I think it's really brilliant. The World Book Day report also has some other interesting information in it. It says that many people lie about having read Jane Austen. Charles Dickens, Fyodor Dostoevsky(I haven't read him, but haven't lied about it either) and Herman Melville. Asked why they lied, the most common reason was to“impress” someone they were speaking to. This could be tricky if the conversation became more in-depth! But when asked which authors they actually enjoy, people named J. K. Rowling,John Grisham, Sophie Kinsella (ah, the big sellers, in other words). Forty-two percent of people asked admitted they turned to the back of the book to read the end before finishing the story (I' ll come clean: I do this and am astonished that 58 percent said they had never done so). 28. How did the author find his friend,a book liar? A. By judging his manner of speaking. B. By looking into his background. C. By mentioning a famous name. D. By discussing the book itself. 29. Which of the following is a“guilty secret” according to the World Book Day report? A. Charles Dickens is very low on the top-ten list. B 42% of people pretended to have read 1984. C. The author admitted having read 9 books. D. Dreams From My Father is hardly read. 30. By lying about reading, a person hopes to . A. control the conversation B. appear knowledgeable C. learn about the book D. make more friends 31. What is the author's attitude to 58% of readers? A. Favorable. B. Uncaring C. Doubtful D. Friendly D We've considered several ways of paying to cut in line: hiring line standers, buying tickets from scalpers(票贩子), or purchasing line cutting privileges directly from, say,an airline or an amusement park. Each of these deals replaces the morals of the queue(waiting your turn) with the morals of the market (paying a price for faster service). Markets and queues— paying and waiting— are two different ways of allocating things, and each is appropriate to different activities. The morals of the queue,“First come, first served,” have an egalitarian(平等主义的) appeal. They tell us to ignore privilege, power, and deep pockets. The principle seems right on play grounds and at bus stops. But the morals of the queue do not govern all occasions. If I put my house up for sale,I have no duty to accept the first offer that comes along, simply because it's the first. Selling my house and waiting for a bus are different activities, properly governed by different standards. Sometimes standards change, and it is unclear which principle should apply. Think of the recorded message you hear, played over and over, as you wait on hold when calling your bank:“Your call will be answered in the order in which it was received.”This is essential for the morals of the queue. It's as if the company is trying to ease our impatience with fairness. But don't take the recorded message too seriously. Today, some people's calls are answered faster than others. Call center technology enables companies to“score”incoming calls and to give faster service to those that come from rich places. You might call this telephonic queue jumping. Of course, markets and queues are not the only ways of allocating things. Some goods we allocate by merit, others by need, still others by chance. However, the tendency of markets to replace queues, and other non-market ways of allocating goods is so common in modern life that we scarcely notice it anymore. It is striking that most of the paid queue-jumping schemes we've considered— at airports and amusement parks, in call centers, doctors’ offices, and national parks—— are recent developments, scarcely imaginable three decades ago. The disappearance of the queues in these places may seem an unusual concern, but these are not the only places that markets have entered. 32. According to the author which of the following seems governed by the principle“First come first served”? A. Taking buses. B. Buying houses. C. Flying with an airline. D. Visiting amusement parks. 33. The example of the recorded message in Paragraphs 4 and 5 illustrates . A. the necessity of patience in queuing B. the advantage of modern technology C. the uncertainty of allocation principle D. the fairness of telephonic services 34. What does the underlined word“allocating” mean? A. locating B. distributing C. collecting D. judging 35. The passage is meant to . A. justify paying for faster services B. discuss the morals of allocating things C. analyze the reason for standing in line D. criticize the behavior of queue jumping 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Training for a marathon requires careful preparation and steady, gradual increases in the length of the runs. 36 , buy the best-fitting, best-built running shoes you can find. First of all, uniforms help the school look smart. The students feel that they belong to a particular group. When every pupil in the school wears the uniform, nobody 61 (have) to worry about fashion. Everybody wears 62 same style of clothes. Uniforms can be useful in unexpected ways. A school in Ireland has introduced an interesting new uniform.
