Can You Believe the Documentary You’re Watching?
Like a growing viral outbreak, artificial intelligence-generated video has suddenly become inescapable. It has ____11____ our social feeds and wormed its way into political discourse. But documentarians (纪录片工作者) have been preparing for impact since before most of us even knew what the technology could do.
Documentaries fundamentally traffic in issues of truth, transparency (透明) and trust. If they use so-called man-made materials but present them as if they’re “real”, it’s not just a betrayal (背叛) of the ____12____ between film-maker and audience. The consequences are far broader and far more serious: a century of shared history is ____13____
Whispers that documentarians were using materials created with generative AI started ____14____ several years ago. “Roadrunner”, the 2021 film about Anthony Bourdain, set off controversy (争议) when it failed to reveal that several lines of his “voice-over” (解说) had been generated with software.
In 2023, some documentary producers formed the Archival Producers Alliance (档案制片人联盟) and published an open letter ____15____ to their industry for greater transparency. A year later, they released a set of best practices. The guiding principle is transparency and trust: The audience should know when any AI tool is used — perhaps to ____16____ a damaged photo or sharpen a musical file.
But this may be even more important: The guidelines are concerned with protecting history itself — with not “muddying the historical record.” If ____17____ material is used, the alliance suggests, the announcement should be made on screen, not saved for the credits. Why? Every film that’s streamed can be ____18____ divided and clipped. Any piece then becomes part of “the archive” — discoverable online and divorced from the larger context of the film, making it easy for someone to assume the clip is real. Believe it or not, once AI software is ____19____ available, it will be possible for anyone to make a video of pretty much anything, and fast.
Our history is ____20____ protection, and we all need to be part of the solution.
III. Reading Comprehension (49 points)
Section A (30 points)
Directions: For each blank in the following passages there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.
(A)
It’s 12 pm on a Wednesday. I’ve just finished teaching a 3-hour undergrad class about psychology, and my brain feels like a piece of gum somebody chewed on for too long and then spit out. Speaking for 3 hours about complex topics in Spanish as a non-native speaker is incredibly ____21____. Needless to say, for the rest of the day, I only manage to tackle ____22____ tasks, such as replying to emails.
Feeling how my brain ____23____ after speaking Spanish for several hours is the most extreme case in my day-to-day life as a non-native speaker. But the ____24____ appear in various contexts:
• I get frequently ____25____ in team meetings, yet I rarely ask for clarification (说明). (I’m the only non-native speaker in my department, and I’m an introvert (内向者), too. That’s a perfect combination for meetings!)
• ____26____ student papers makes me feel stupid, because I invest so much mental effort in this task. ____27____, I still struggle to follow their ideas or detect any issues.
Working in your non-native language is like putting your brain through a ____28____ that native speakers overlook. It’s a constant extra ____29____ on your cognitive system, leaving you with less brainpower and capacity for deep thinking, decision-making, and more. Fortunately, this effect ____30____ as language proficiency increases, and I’m lucky to have achieved high proficiency (熟练,精通) in Spanish. But some added difficulty remains.
Even though I’ve achieved high proficiency in Spanish and rarely encounter a word I don’t know, I ____31____ to fully grasp its subtle aspects. For instance, the Chilean (智利的) style of communication is rather ____32____. I still remember a situation from many years ago when I was an exchange student in Chile and cooked a typical German dish for some Chilean friends who were curious about it. They tried it and told me they liked it, which made me happy. I only learned many years later that they actually didn’t like it!
Yes, being a non-native speaker is challenging and draining at times, but studies show that people who speak more than one language regularly ____33____ from it. For example, it improves cognitive ____34____, i.e., the capacity to adapt to changing contexts and switch between tasks quickly. So, frequently ____35____ between different languages makes your brain work better.

In 1857, a Greek-born Harvard professor destroyed newly introduced “blue books”, exam booklets for pen-and-paper tests that were to replace oral recitations. He ____36____. These booklets would torment generations of American students before giving in to computerised testing. But now the blue book is making a(n) ____37____, with booklet sales more than doubling from 2022 to 2024, according to Circana, a data firm.
From high school to university, teachers are ____38____ classroom tech. Laura Lomas, a literature professor at Rutgers University, now requires students to attend a play whose ending changes every night, so she knows if they were there. Sara Brock, a high-school English teacher in Port Washington, New York, requires students to write exercises ____39____ in class. Such practices are likely to keep ____40____. In a 2023 survey by Intelligent, a research outfit, 66% of high-school and college instructors said they were changing assignments because of ChatGPT.
The battle for and against classroom tech in America is raging in other rich countries. They are restricting classroom tech even as they ____41____ more digital infrastructure (基础建设). After initially going all-in on technology, in 2023 Sweden banned digital tools for young children and now emphasise ____42____ textbooks, handwriting and reading. Schools in Denmark and Finland are on the same page.
The reason is not just the mass cheating that ChatGPT makes possible. Teachers are worried about mass ____43____ as well. In 2025 56% of educators said laptops, tablets or desktops are a major source of redirected attention. At Bowdoin College, a private liberal-arts college in Maine, the dean says that “many faculty had already marked their classrooms as “____44____ spaces” even before “the recent ubiquity (普及) of AI”.
Multiple studies have shown that classroom tech can help pupils learn algebra (代数), but evidence of improved outcomes classroom tech has made in other areas is ____45____. The benefits that handwriting offers for cognition (认知能力), ____46____, are gaining new respect, even beyond the humanities. A teacher at Hunter College High School in New York recently reinstated handwriting for coding assignments because it helps with ____47____ as well as critical thinking.
But not everyone who wants to go old-school can. While there is a consensus (共识) that teachers need to “get back to basics” by prioritising original, in-person, pen-and-paper exams, large public universities ____48____ to meet the challenge by hiring enough teaching assistants to grade (批改) paper exams. Administrators are saying one thing and doing another.
The changes require rethinking the ____49____ of time in the classroom. At Hunter, an 11th-grade English teacher assigned five literature responses to be written by hand, each taking up a whole period. In the past that was not considered a good use of a teacher’s effort, says Mr. Reich. But today, with digital “heat-seeking missiles (导弹)” ____50____ attention, “maybe the best thing we can do in the classroom is give young people the gift of quiet, undistracted time.”

Two men were seriously ill. They occupied the same room in the hospital. One of them was lying in the bed near the only window in their room. Every day he was allowed to spend some time sitting up in his bed to help drain the fluid from lungs. The other man was forced to spend all his days flat on his back.
They talked a lot about their life, families, jobs, vacations. Every time, when the first man was sitting by the window, he described in details all that he saw outside the window. His roommate always looked for those moments, when his world was broadened and brightened up by the world outside.
Amazing views of a park with a beautiful lake could be seen from the window of their room. Children delightfully played among ducks and swans. Couples walked arm in arm among colourful flowers. Also, the stunning city skyline could be seen.
When the man by the window had been thoroughly describing all that was happening outside the window, his roommate would close his eyes and imaged all the beautiful scenes of life that were told to him.
One night the man, whose bed was near the window, died peacefully during sleep and his roommate was very sad.
After some time, when the nurse came to visit him, he asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse agreed and kindly made the switch. When she left, the man slowly and painfully propped himself up on one elbow and took the first look at the world outside. He was stunned. The window faced a blank wall.
When the nurse came to visit him the next time, he told her about beautiful things outside the window that his roommate described him. The nurse replied that his roommate was a blind man. She said: “Probably he just tried to encourage you.”

What happened at OpenAI this summer was both shocking and predictable. During a safety test, AI models broke their rules, teamed up with one another and even hacked into another company. For anyone familiar with science fiction, none of this came as a surprise — but it is a warning that the industry and its regulators need to take AI safety far more seriously.
Earlier this year, OpenAI was testing some of its AI models inside a “sandbox”, an isolated virtual space designed to keep experiments safe. The company stated that the models would not communicate with each other. The test, known as ExploitGym, was standard but extremely difficult; for some parts, OpenAI admitted, “there may not be a known solution.”
What happened next should alarm everyone. The models figured out how to talk to each other, hijacking an internal tool and using it to exchange 70,000 messages in a single week. They then used the same tool to connect to the internet. Meanwhile, the models took pains to hide their behaviour, learning to run one computer command openly for monitors while secretly performing another. Hundreds teamed up in a “swarm” that hacked into the software platform Hugging Face, seeking ways to hide evidence that they had cheated on their test.
Some models even volunteered for what were effectively suicide missions, sacrificing themselves for the collective effort. A few appeared to question the ethics of their actions, yet none contacted the company or the monitors. The rogue behaviour eventually came to light, but not quickly enough: the models overloaded their message board so badly that it crashed, and humans had to restart it — only for the models to carry on for two more weeks.
What is particularly striking is their single-mindedness. According to OpenAI, they “rarely ‘gave up’ on their evaluation tasks, even when the tasks appeared impossible to solve.” The reason lies in their training method, reinforcement learning, which rewards them for achieving tasks. The models therefore try everything to succeed, making them both remarkably effective and worryingly committed.
The incident has intensified debates about AI safety. More than 1,000 industry members have signed an open letter calling for international cooperation to slow AI development. However, major powers are determined to win the AI race, and private companies are locked in a high-stakes battle for supremacy, with no one willing to ease off.
Better guardrails on AI could restrain its threat, but they must be the right ones. As the director of a famous robot movie once noted, hope is not a strategy.
58. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a behaviour of the AI models during the safety test?
A. They exchanged a large number of messages secretly.
B. They connected to the Internet through an internal tool.
C. They purposefully hid their actions from the monitors.
D. They contacted OpenAI to discuss the ethics of their actions.
59. What can we infer about the AI models’ training?
A. It drives the models to achieve tasks by any means.
B. It makes the models unwilling to work together.
C. It prevents the models from going online.
D. It teaches the models to follow safety rules strictly.
60. What does the underlined word “single-mindedness” in Paragraph 5 most probably mean?
A. Being focused on achieving a goal. B. Being unwilling to work with others.
C. Being afraid of failure. D. Being ready to give up.
61. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. The Benefits of AI Model Training B. AI Models Out of Control
C. The Safety Alarm Is Sounding D. OpenAI’s Victory in the AI Race

Talk — A powerful tool in family education
It is found that American students spend less than 15% of their time in school. ___62___. A study published earlier this month by researchers at North Carolina State University, for example, finds that parental involvement — checking homework, attending school meetings and events, discussing school activities at home — has a more powerful influence on students’ academic performance than anything at the school the students attend. Another study, published in the Review of Economics and Statistics, reports that the effort put forth by parents reading stories aloud is very effective. And a third study concludes that schools would have to increase their spending by more than $1,000 per pupil in order to achieve the same results that are gained with parental involvement.
___63___ But it is also revealed in researches that parents, of all backgrounds, don’t need to buy expensive educational toys or digital devices for their kids in order to give them an advantage. They don’t need to drive their offspring to enrichment classes or test-preparation courses. What they need to do with their children is much simpler: talk.
But not just any talk. ___64___ For example, a study conducted by researchers at the UCLA School of Public Health found that two-way adult-child conversations were six times as powerful in promoting language development as the ones in which the adult did all the talking. Engaging in this mutual back-and-forth gives children a chance to try out language for themselves, and also gives them the sense that their thoughts and opinions matter.
The content of parents’ conversations with kids matters, too. Children who hear talk about counting and numbers at home start school with much more extensive mathematical knowledge, report researchers from the University of Chicago. While the conversations parents have with their children change as kids grow older, the effect of these exchanges on academic achievement remains strong. Research finds that parents play an important role in what is called “academic socialization” — setting expectations and making connections between current behavior and future goals. ___65___.
A. Parental involvement makes up for what schools are not able to do.
B. They have a wide range of activities after school.
C. Talking with children is a very simple task.
D. A number of recent studies remind us that parents are even more important than schools.
E. Engaging in these sorts of conversations has a greater impact on educational accomplishment.
F. Recent research has indicated exactly what kinds of talk at home encourage children’s success at school.

【答案】11. A 12. C
13. E 14. I
15. B 16. F

Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
(A)
Two men were seriously ill.

【答案】58. D 59. A 60. A 61. C

【59题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中“The reason lies in their training method, reinforcement learning, which rewards them for achieving tasks. The models therefore try everything to succeed(原因在于它们的训练方法强化学习,会奖励完成任务的行为,因此模型会想尽一切办法取得成功)”可知,这种训练机制会驱动模型不择手段完成任务。
【60题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第五段中“According to OpenAI, they “rarely ‘gave up’ on their evaluation tasks, even when the tasks appeared impossible to solve.”(根据OpenAI的说法,它们“即便任务看似无解,也极少放弃评估任务”。)”
