Anaya Elick was born without hands — she has stubs (残端) where most people’s wrists begin. To hold a pencil, she must balance it between her wrists, and then use her arms to push it along the page. But that didn’t stop her from winning a national handwriting contest when she was in first grade.
In the two years since, she has taken on greater challenges. Last week, she won another national handwriting contest, this one for cursive (草书). And by all accounts from her teachers at Greenbrier Christian Academy, she has become an excellent artist.
Anaya isn’t one to show off her successes. She unwillingly says they make her proud but adds that they come from “lots of practice”.
Her friends at school said, “She inspires everybody by what she does and how she does it.” Anaya’s mother Middleton said, “Being a parent can be scary. No one wants their child to fail, and raising one who was born with a disability can heighten that protective instinct (本能).” Before Anaya was born, doctors knew about her condition, although not its cause. Other than having no hands, she is a regular 9-year-old girl.
“Anaya succeeds because she is not afraid to fail,” Middleton said. The two began practicing cursive last year, when Anaya was in second grade. She struggled sometimes, because unlike traditional penmanship, which allows for breaks after each letter, cursive words are written straight through, which adds extra effort for someone who must balance rather than hold the pencil.
Middleton could see her daughter thinking through the challenge, figuring out how she could do better. She’d get disappointed at times, but she never hesitated to do things as often as it took to get them right.
“I don’t think I’ve ever heard Anaya say I can’t do anything,” Middleton said.
4. What does Anaya mainly rely on to move the pencil while writing?
A. Her hands. B. Her arms. C. Her wrists. D. Her mouth.
5. Which of the following best describes Anaya?
A. Talented and sensitive. B. Generous and outgoing.
C. Modest and determined. D. Ambitious and warm-hearted.
6. Why did Anaya struggle with cursive?
A. Movements cost more energy. B. Pencil balance was harder.
C. She mixed letter shapes often. D. Cursive needs continuous writing.
7. What message does Anaya’s story mainly convey?
A. Talent ensures victory. B. Practice beats disability.
C. Encouragement creates power. D. Protection brings progress.
B 5. C 6. D 7. B
根据第一段中“Anaya Elick was born without hands — she has stubs (残端) where most people’s wrists begin. To hold a pencil, she must balance it between her wrists, and then use her arms to push it along the page.(Anaya Elick出生时就没有手,大多数人长手腕的部位,她只有残端。要握笔的话,她必须将笔在两个腕部残端之间保持平衡,然后用胳膊推着笔在纸上移动)”可知,Anaya是用她的胳膊来写字的。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Anaya isn’t one to show off her successes. She unwillingly says they make her proud but adds that they come from “lots of practice”.(Anaya从不炫耀自己的成就。她勉强承认这些成绩让她感到自豪,但同时补充说,这些成果是“经过大量练习”才得来的)”可知,她很谦虚;根据倒数第三段“Anaya succeeds because she is not afraid to fail(Anaya之所以成功,是因为她从不害怕失败)”和倒数第二段“She’d get disappointed at times, but she never hesitated to do things as often as it took to get them right.(她有时会感到失望,但她从不犹豫,愿意反复尝试直到把事情做对)”可知,她不放弃。
根据倒数第三段“She struggled sometimes, because unlike traditional penmanship, which allows for breaks after each letter, cursive words are written straight through, which adds extra effort for someone who must balance rather than hold the pencil.(她有时会感到吃力,因为与传统的手写体不同,后者每个字母之间可以稍作停顿,而草书字迹则是连续书写,对于必须保持平衡而非握笔的人来说,这需要额外的用力)”可知,草书需要连贯书写是Anaya书写草书吃力的原因。

For a long time, scientists believed the beautiful songs of birds were purely a product of instinct. Peter Marler, a leading British animal-study expert, changed this view through his research into how birds actually learn to sing, earning him the title “the father of birdsong”.
Marler’s strong interest began in his youth, when he watched chaffinches (苍头燕雀) in the English countryside. He noticed small but steady differences in the songs of birds from different regions, much like local human speech styles. In the 1950s, he began carefully recording these songs. Using an important tool called a sound-image tool, which shows sound in picture form, he was able to scientifically confirm that these regional differences were indeed real.
The key question remained: Were these local speech styles passed down by birth or picked up through experience? To solve this, Marler designed a set of experiments. He raised young birds with no chance to hear adult birds sing at all. These separated birds only made simple, natural calls, proving that the full, complex song did not come automatically. However, when he played recordings of adult songs to them during their key learning time, they successfully learned and sang the complete tune. This was strong proof that birdsong is a behavior learned through social learning.
At first, his theory met with doubts from the scientific community that preferred explanations based on inborn nature. The main opinion still favored instinct, and some thought his findings were special cases instead of general rules. Marler, however, quietly kept doing his careful studies. Slowly, his well-planned methods and clear facts won over the scientific community. By turning lines of numbers into useful pictures of sound and behavior, he gave the world new ways to notice what had always been there but had gone unnoticed in everyday bird sounds.
The influence of his work went well beyond the study of birds. It offered a helpful, simpler model for scientists studying the highly complex development of human language, suggesting our own speech may come from similar sound-learning steps.
8. What does Marler’s early life experience show?
A. His skill in tool design. B. His gift for bird-raising.
C. His love for rural travel. D. His lifelong research root.
9. What can we infer about Marler’s research?
A. It proved human language develops like birdsong.
B. It used scientific tools and controlled experiments.
C. It studied only regional birdsong differences.
D. It won wide scientific support at first.
10. What function does paragraph 4 serve?
A. To show the tough progress. B. To list experiment steps.
C. To question the old science. D. To praise other experts.
11. What is the best title of the text?
A. A New View on Birdsong B. Early Studies of Wild Birds
C. Secrets of Animal Instinct D. Steps of Bird-learning Tests
D 9. B 10. A 11. A
根据第二段中的“Marler’s strong interest began in his youth, when he watched chaffinches (苍头燕雀) in the English countryside. He noticed small but steady differences in the songs of birds from different regions, much like local human speech styles.(马勒浓厚的兴趣始于青年时期,他在英国乡村观察苍头燕雀。他注意到不同地区鸟类的鸣叫声存在细微而稳定的差异,很像人类的地方言语风格。)”可知,早年经历是他毕生相关研究的根源。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中的“Using an important tool called a sound-image tool, which shows sound in picture form, he was able to scientifically confirm that these regional differences were indeed real.(借助一种名为声像工具的重要设备,该工具以图像形式展示声音,他得以科学证实这些地域差异真实存在。)”以及第三段“To solve this, Marler designed a set of experiments.
根据第四段中的“At first, his theory met with doubts from the scientific community that preferred explanations based on inborn nature. The main opinion still favored instinct, and some thought his findings were special cases instead of general rules. Marler, however, quietly kept doing his careful studies. Slowly, his well-planned methods and clear facts won over the scientific community.(起初,他的理论遭到科学界质疑,学界更倾向于用先天本能解释现象。主流观点依旧支持本能论,部分学者认为他的发现只是特例而非普遍规律。但马勒默默坚持严谨研究,周密的研究方法与确凿事实慢慢说服了科学界。)”可知,本段介绍他的理论从遭受质疑到逐步获得认可的艰难研究历程。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中的“For a long time, scientists believed the beautiful songs of birds were purely a product of instinct. Peter Marler, a leading British animal-study expert, changed this view through his research into how birds actually learn to sing, earning him the title “the father of birdsong”.(长期以来,科学家认为动听鸟鸣纯粹是本能产物。英国顶尖动物研究专家彼得·马勒通过研究鸟类学习鸣叫的方式改变了这一观点,被誉为“鸟鸣研究之父”。)”可知,文章介绍关于鸟鸣的全新观点,所以“A New View on Birdsong(鸟鸣新解)”最能概括全文核心,适合作为最佳标题。
D
Imagine you’re at the beach when you spot a swimmer in trouble a little over half a mile away. Throwing a life ring that far is impossible, but flying one out? That’s where the TY-3R drone comes in, a brilliant product from the Chinese drone company Didiok Makings.
The idea is that when a struggling swimmer is spotted by shore-based rescuers, they’ll just fire up the drone, fly it out to the person and land it on the water, where the swimmer will use it as a floating device. A slower-travelling human rescuer will then proceed out on a boat, to bring the individual back to shore.
The TY-3R takes off with the push of a button on an included remote and provides the pilot with a real-time view from an onboard camera as the drone flies out. Once the swimmer has been retrieved and doesn’t require the drone for floating anymore, another button push causes the aircraft to autonomously fly back to its take-off location — the drone is capable of taking off from the water, as well as landing on it.
According to Didiok, the TY-3R, which can float up to two adults, has a communication range of 1.1 km, a top speed of 47 km/h and a runtime of over 10 minutes per battery charge. And yes, the TY-3R shuts off its motors upon landing on the water, plus it has screens over its propellers (螺旋桨) to further protect swimmers’ fingers and other body parts. It’s available now at the Didiok Makings website, priced at US $11,803.
Not surprisingly, this isn’t the first swimmer-rescuing drone we’ve seen. The Pars, Little Ripper, Auxdron and the Project Ryptide system are also capable of performing the task, although they all do so by dropping separate floating devices down to the person.
12. What can we learn from the rescue process of the TY-3R drone?
A. Swimmers need to pilot the drone. B. The drone can pull people ashore.
C. Humans are still irreplaceable. D. Boats control the drone at sea.
13. What does the underlined word “retrieved” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Rescued. B. Observed. C. Accompanied. D. Recognized.
14. What writing method is mainly used in paragraph 4?
A. Sharing personal experiences. B. Presenting facts and figures.
C. Explaining long-term effects. D. Drawing useful conclusions.
15. What would the author probably talk about next?
A. Ways to buy the rescue drone. B. Harm from ocean-water pollution.
C. Details of the mentioned rescue drones. D. Basic beach-safety rules for swimmers.
C 13. A 14. B 15. C
根据第二段中的“The idea is that when a struggling swimmer is spotted by shore-based rescuers, they’ll just fire up the drone, fly it out to the person and land it on the water, where the swimmer will use it as a floating device. A slower-travelling human rescuer will then proceed out on a boat, to bring the individual back to shore.(这个设想是:当岸上救援人员发现遇险的游泳者时,他们会启动无人机,将它飞到遇险者身边并降落在水面上,游泳者可以把它当作漂浮装置。随后行进速度较慢的救援人员会乘船赶过去,将遇险者带回岸边。)”可知,无人机仅作为漂浮设备,最终仍需要人类救援人员将人带回岸边,人类的作用无法被取代。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中的“Once the swimmer has been retrieved and doesn’t require the drone for floating anymore, another button push causes the aircraft to autonomously fly back to its take-off location — the drone is capable of taking off from the water, as well as landing on it.(一旦游泳者retrieved,不再需要借助无人机漂浮,按下另一个按键,无人机就能自动飞回起飞点,该无人机可以在水面起降。)”
根据第四段中的“According to Didiok, the TY-3R, which can float up to two adults, has a communication range of 1.1 km, a top speed of 47 km/h and a runtime of over 10 minutes per battery charge. And yes, the TY-3R shuts off its motors upon landing on the water, plus it has screens over its propellers (螺旋桨) to further protect swimmers’ fingers and other body parts. It’s available now at the Didiok Makings website, priced at US $11,803.(据迪迪奥克公司介绍,TY‑3R 可以承载两名成年人漂浮,通信距离可达 1.1 千米,最高时速 47 千米,单次充电续航时长超过 10 分钟。并且 TY‑3R 落到水面时,电机会自动停机。此外,螺旋桨外部装有防护网,进一步保护游泳者的手指以及身体其他部位。该产品现已在迪迪奥克制造官网开售,售价 11803 美元。)”可知,本段主要通过罗列事实与各项数据来介绍这款无人机。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中的“Not surprisingly, this isn’t the first swimmer-rescuing drone we’ve seen. The Pars, Little Ripper, Auxdron and the Project Ryptide system are also capable of performing the task, although they all do so by dropping separate floating devices down to the person.(毫不意外,这并不是我们见到的第一款游泳救援无人机。Pars、Little Ripper、Auxdron以及Ryptide项目系统同样可以完成救援任务,不过它们都是向遇险者投放独立漂浮设备。)”可知,本段引出多款其他救援无人机,下文大概率会介绍这些无人机的详细信息。
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Many people believe that close friendships or good interpersonal relationships mean total agreement. They fear that disagreements will break their connection with others. ____16____ In fact, true and long-lasting relationships never depend on the same opinions. This is an important lesson for us to learn as we deal with daily social life.
Everyone grows up in different environments, developing unique personalities and gaining diverse life experiences. ____17____ When our views conflict with our friends’, neither side is necessarily wrong. It just shows we are independent individuals with our own thoughts. A strong self-awareness encourages us to express our true ideas, instead of giving them up to avoid awkward moments. If we hide our real feelings, dissatisfaction will gradually grow inside us.
____18____ This does not mean we have to agree with everything they say, but that we respect their right to think differently. When conflicts of opinion come up, many people try hard to convince their friends, and sometimes even fall into heated arguments. They wish to resolve all differences to keep their bonds stable. Pushing for complete agreement all the time, however, can leave both parties exhausted and under pressure.
Healthy connections make space for disagreements expressed with care. We can give full attention to other people’s points and show genuine respect, while still holding onto our own beliefs. ____19____ Instead, we aim to see things from each other’s perspective and strengthen our bond through honest communication.
Real harmony within relationships does not lie in thinking exactly alike. ____20____ The ability to live with differences helps us know ourselves better, read other people more accurately, and keep our important relationships alive for a long time.
A. We also need to accept others’ views.
B. There is no need to win every exchange.
C. We focus on finding common ground during discussions.
D. It grows out of tolerance, respect and honest communication.
E. These differences create different opinions on the same matter.
F. So they often hide their real thoughts just to please their friends.
G. We are supposed to treasure every precious friendship around us.
F 17. E 18. A 19. B 20. D

A Funny Pet Show Experience
School pet shows are always fun and popular among students. Chloe, an outgoing girl, has a lovely hamster (仓鼠) named Momo, which she has raised for months. She enjoys dressing and training her little pet in her spare time. So when the school planned a pet show, she was eager to sign up for it.
To make their performance wonderful, she made full preparations for nearly a week. Apart from preparing a tiny delicate hat and a soft little coat for Momo, she also trained the hamster patiently every day. She taught Momo to walk slowly on her hand, turn around gently and stay calm in front of people. She hoped these trained tricks would help her pet stand out, win the audience’s favor and get the cutest pet prize.
As the big day finally came, the school hall was full of laughter and cheers. Many students brought their lovely pets and gave wonderful shows. Waiting in line, Chloe felt both nervous and excited. She stroked (抚摸) Momo softly in her hand, calming the little creature down and going over her performance steps in her mind. Soon, it was her turn. She took a deep breath, walked onto the stage bravely and greeted the audience warmly.
At first, everything went perfectly. Momo behaved well, finishing all the trained tricks gently on Chloe’s hand. The audience was deeply attracted by the lovely hamster and let out bursts of joyful cheers and laughter. However, the sudden loud noise startled (使受惊) the sensitive little hamster.
Momo suddenly jumped out of Chloe’s hand and ran away fast. Still wearing its twisted hat, it rushed all over the stage. It slipped under the host’s legs and even bit the microphone line playfully. Chloe grew worried at once and ran around the stage hurriedly, trying to catch her naughty pet. Soon, Momo’s hat fell off, turning the neat performance into a funny mess.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
To Chloe’s great surprise, no one in the audience felt annoyed at her mistake. Instead of feeling disappointed, all the teachers and students burst into warm laughter. They were amused by Momo’s silly and lively movements on the stage. Seeing the lovely hamster running around freely, Chloe felt her embarrassment fade away gradually. She stopped feeling nervous and began to laugh out loud, too. The whole hall was filled with a happy and relaxed atmosphere. What was once a messy accident turned into the funniest moment of the whole pet show.
In the end, Momo did not get any official prize. However, it won the greatest popularity and became the biggest star of the entire pet show. Many audience members crowded around after the show, wanting to take photos with the lovely and naughty hamster. Everyone praised Momo for bringing them so much joy and laughter. Chloe gained endless happiness from this special and unforgettable experience. She finally realized that unexpected accidents were not always terrible failures. Sometimes imperfect moments could bring more sincere joy and precious warm memories than a perfectly smooth performance.
