A mother of nine who started medical school when her youngest child was 4 years old graduated with her degree and planned to be a neurosurgeon
Sarah Merrill, now 41, said her journey to medical school began at 17. She then met her husband and got married. Merrill first thought about going to school part-time to get a degree, but later she decided to follow her dream of attending medical school. Certainly, it was a challenge. Speaking of her successful return to university, Merrill said her family had helped her a lot. “When I was accepted by Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine, we moved from Pennsylvania to Arizona,” said Merrill, who is moving to Indiana with her family to begin her residency (实习期) in neurosurgery. “In fact, they willingly made these moves. I really appreciate that.”
Merrill and her children often have “homework parties” where they study for their own courses. Merrill’s choice has given a kind of stimulus to her children. Merrill felt touched knowing her 11-year-old daughter wants to become a surgeon and overhearing her son tell his friends his mom’s going to be a cool brain surgeon, though he doesn’t understand that really.
Merrill’s next step into a neurosurgery residency will take her into a field with far more men than women, and only 5% of neurosurgeons are women. Dr. Michele Halyard at Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine said Merrill was known as a focused student. Halyard said, “If you can deal with nine children patiently, even great pressure will not make you fail.”
Merrill had considered choosing a more family-friendly career, but, again, she chose to follow her original dream. It’s the same advice she would give to all. “Set the goal which you’re really enthusiastic about, and it helps to think small. If you know what your interest is, focus on the next step. Then you’ll get where you want to go.”
24. Why does Merrill mention their house moving?
A. To stress the support of her family.
B. To show her determination to be a doctor.
C. To reflect difficulties in attending college.
D. To describe the process of pursuing her dream.
25. What does the underlined word “stimulus” mean in Paragraph 3?
A. Comfort. B. Development. C. Choice. D. Inspiration.
26. What do Halyard’s words in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Merrill can make it in the residency. B. Merrill will have more stress to handle.
C. Being a mom ensures Merrill a better doctor. D. Staying focused and sensible is key to success.
27. What does Merrill mainly suggest in the last paragraph?
A. Handling several goals at once. B. Being true to your passion.
C. Choosing a family-friendly career. D. Having the courage to dream big.
A 25. D 26. A 27. B

根据第二段“Speaking of her successful return to university, Merrill said her family had helped her a lot. “When I was accepted by Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine, we moved from Pennsylvania to Arizona,” said Merrill, who is moving to Indiana with her family to begin her residency (实习期) in neurosurgery. “In fact, they willingly made these moves. I really appreciate that.”(谈到自己成功重返大学,Merrill说家人给了她很大帮助。“当我被梅奥诊所阿里克斯医学院录取时,我们从宾夕法尼亚州搬到了亚利桑那州,” Merrill说。她将和家人搬到印第安纳州,开始神经外科的实习生涯。“事实上,他们心甘情愿地一次次搬家。我十分感激。”)”可知,Merrill提及搬家是为了强调家人给予她的支持。
【25题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“Merrill’s choice has given a kind of stimulus to her children. Merrill felt touched knowing her 11-year-old daughter wants to become a surgeon and overhearing her son tell his friends his mom’s going to be a cool brain surgeon, though he doesn’t understand that really.(Merrill的选择给了孩子们一种stimulus。得知11岁的女儿想成为一名外科医生,无意间听到儿子告诉朋友妈妈会成为一名很酷的脑外科医生(尽管他并不完全懂),Merrill十分感动。)”可知,她的选择给孩子带来了正向的激励、启发。故猜测stimulus表示“激励、鼓舞”,与inspiration同义。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Halyard said, “If you can deal with nine children patiently, even great pressure will not make you fail.”(哈利亚德说:“如果你能耐心照顾九个孩子,那么再大的压力也不会让你失败。”)”
根据最后一段““Set the goal which you’re really enthusiastic about, and it helps to think small. If you know what your interest is, focus on the next step. Then you’ll get where you want to go.”(“树立你真正热爱的目标,从小处着手会有所帮助。如果你清楚自己的兴趣所在,专注于下一步。你终将抵达想去的地方。”)”可知,Merrill主要建议人们忠于自己热爱的事物。

Teenagers’ fitness is now an important concern, and physical exercise is very important. It reduces stress and improves fitness. Exercise makes your body strong, and helps you to keep the right body weight. Sports scientist Dr. Helen Lopez offers the following advice to teenagers. First, you need to find out your present level of fitness. Then you can design a programme that will help you become healthier.
Dr. Lopez suggests that there are three levels of fitness that need a change of lifestyle. “Overweight” means that the person gets very little exercise and often has a serious weight problem. “Inactive” means that the person does not join in many physical activities, but is not seriously overweight. “Active” refers to people who take part in sports and other physical activities, but do not have a high fitness level.
According to Dr. Lopez, overweight teenagers should work out to keep healthy. Ride a bike, play badminton or basketball for a while, and go for a twenty-minute walk each day. All these will help to burn calories (卡路里). Inactive teenagers should do similar activities, but add some bending and stretching (拉伸) exercises, such as push-ups and sit-ups, starting with twenty of each a day. “Inactive people can take a little more exercise than overweight people because their bodies are stronger,” Dr. Lopez said. The same rule applies to active teenagers.
Dr. Lopez suggests one hour a week or more on running and other forms of intensive (高强度) exercise, together with fifteen minutes a day spent on stretching and bending activities. “These activities are really important in order to stop injuries,” Dr. Lopez said. Some weight-training and other body-strengthening exercises could also be organized in the programme in order to increase the person’s strength.
28. Why should teenagers first know their fitness level?
A. To compare themselves with others. B. To find out their body weight.
C. To decide which sport is easier. D. To choose a suitable exercise plan.
29. Why does Dr. Lopez divide teenagers into three groups?
A. To show their different sports interests.
B. To explain their different exercise needs.
C. To compare their daily school activities.
D. To find the cause of their weight problems.
30. What principle can be found in Dr. Lopez’s exercise plans?
A. More exercise is always better.
B. Stronger bodies can take more exercise.
C. Weight training works for every teenager.
D. Walking is the best way to improve fitness.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Ways to Build a Stronger Body B. Popular Sports Among Teenagers
C. Exercise Plans for Different Fitness Levels D. Fitness Problems Among Teenagers
D 29. B 30. B 31. C
根据第一段“First, you need to find out your present level of fitness. Then you can design a programme that will help you become healthier.(首先,你需要了解目前的体能水平。然后你可以设计一个能帮助你变得更健康的计划。)”可知,了解健康水平是为了选择一个合适的锻炼计划。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“Dr. Lopez suggests that there are three levels of fitness that need a change of lifestyle.(洛佩兹博士提出,体能分为三个等级,不同等级需要调整生活方式。)”和第三段“According to Dr. Lopez said. The same rule applies to active teenagers.(洛佩兹博士认为,超重的青少年应当锻炼以保持健康。

AI is becoming increasingly popular in society. A recent report from Common Sense Media shows that while young people know the possible uses of AI tools, they may not fully understand the hidden dangers. So it is important for parents to talk with their teens about AI.
Today teens use AI most often for homework (53%). They also use it to help with school tasks, and 46% of them report doing so without the teacher’s permission (许可). What’s more, they use it to fight boredom (42%) and to translate something from one language into another (41%). They may even use AI to create a joke, plan activities, and get health advice.
“It’s important to find out how exactly AI is helping teens,” says Arman Jaffer, an AI education expert. “One thing educators and parents have noticed is that AI can best support learning when it focuses on the learning process (过程), not the result. Rather than asking ChatGPT for an answer or to write a complete paper, it can work better if it’s used to provide ideas, give suggestions, or help with study.”
“As AI is being applied more widely in the classroom, it is very important to make sure students are being properly educated on AI, so they are ready for a world where AI is in everything they do,” says Leticia Barr, a computer science teacher. “Knowing how AI is present in their lives, the way it works, and how to best use AI tools to support learning is more important than stopping it.”
The best thing parents can do is check in with their children — be the ones who actively take part in the learning process. They may never be able to keep up with computer programmers or rapid advances in AI, but they can play an important role in their children’s learning and support the difficult work teachers do every day.
32. What can be learned from paragraph 2?
A. Boredom is common among teens.
B. Students use AI for different purposes.
C. Homework is too difficult for teens to deal with.
D. Teachers should pay more attention to students’ needs.
33. How does Jaffer think AI can best support learning?
A. By finishing schoolwork for students.
B. By giving students the final answer.
C. By helping students through the learning process.
D. By checking whether their answers are correct.
34. What does Barr suggest schools should do about AI?
A. Keep AI away from classroom learning.
B. Use AI to take the place of classroom teaching.
C. Let students freely choose their AI tools.
D. Teach students how to use AI properly.
35. What does the last paragraph imply about parents?
A. Their support still matters even without expert AI knowledge.
B. Their main task is to follow the newest changes in technology.
C. They need to know more about AI than their children.
D. They should leave AI education completely to teachers.
B 33. C 34. D 35. A
根据第二段“Today teens use AI most often for homework (53%). They also use it to help with school tasks, and 46% of them report doing so without the teacher’s permission (许可). What’s more, they use it to fight boredom (42%) and to translate something from one language into another (41%).(如今青少年使用AI最常用来写作业(占 53%)。他们还用AI处理校园任务,其中46%的学生表示这么做并没有征得老师许可。此外,他们用AI打发无聊(42%)、翻译不同语言(41%))”可知,学生们使用AI有着不同的目的。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第三段“One thing educators and parents have noticed is that AI can best support learning when it focuses on the learning process (过程), not the result.(教育工作者和家长注意到的一点是,AI在支持学习时,如果聚焦于学习过程而非学习结果,效果会更好)”可知,他认为AI通过在学习过程中帮助学生才能发挥最大的支持作用。
根据文章第四段““As AI is being applied more widely in the classroom, it is very important to make sure students are being properly educated on AI, so they are ready for a world where AI is in everything they do,” says Leticia Barr, a computer science teacher. “Knowing how AI is present in their lives, the way it works, and how to best use AI tools to support learning is more important than stopping it.”(计算机科学教师莱蒂西亚・巴尔说:“随着人工智能在课堂中得到越来越广泛的应用,务必保证学生接受关于人工智能的正确教育,这样他们才能做好准备,迎接一个人工智能融入他们方方面面的世界。了解人工智能如何出现在他们的生活中、它的运作原理,以及如何最好地利用人工智能工具辅助学习,远比禁止使用人工智能更加重要。”)”可知,她建议学校应该教导学生如何正确地使用AI。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“They may never be able to keep up with computer programmers or rapid advances in AI, but they can play an important role in their children’s learning and support the difficult work teachers do every day.(他们或许永远无法跟上计算机程序员或AI的飞速发展,但他们可以在孩子的学习中发挥重要作用,并支持教师每天所从事的繁重工作)”可以推断出,即使父母不具备专业的AI知识,他们对孩子的参与和支持依然非常重要。

Yours,
Li Hua
Dear Jack,
I’m sorry to hear you’re struggling with your new senior high life. Don’t worry too much — starting a new school is tricky for everyone at first. New classmates, more courses, and different rules can feel overwhelming, but this unease will pass before you know it.
To help you settle in better, I’ve got a few practical suggestions to share. For a smoother study routine, start by making a simple study plan: list daily tasks like math exercises or English reading, so you won’t feel lost in homework. When it comes to making friends and fitting in, joining a club or sports activity works wonders — maybe the football team or art club? It’s easy to bond with people who share your interests there. Besides that, don’t overlook small, friendly gestures: just say “hi” to your deskmate sometimes, or share a pencil — these little acts can soon turn into new friendships.
I truly believe that you’ll get used to everything soon. Looking forward to hearing all about your happy school days ahead!
Yours,
Li Hua

D
