I have lived in China for many years. Now I am 1 in Chinese culture. I fell in love with it all by accident. One day, I saw some people writing Chinese characters with ink brushes. It was so amazing. Later I started to 2 many Chinese calligraphers, such as Wang Xizhi of the Jin Dynasty. I joined a 3 class four years ago. The teacher showed me many of his calligraphy (书法) works. I told myself that I would 4 hard and try to become as good as him. At first, I followed the teacher carefully. As soon as the teacher wrote a character, I 5 one. Before long I could write many characters. I was happy and believed that I had the 6 to learn the Chinese calligraphy well. However, the teacher pointed out a problem in my calligraphy. He told me that Chinese calligraphy is a(n) 7 that comes from the heart and is not just about copying. He said that the 8 of doing it well is that the writer should think carefully about what he wants to show before writing. I'm not sure if I 9 understood the teacher. Her host family, the Thompsons, welcomed her warmly, but cultural misunderstandings soon appeared. On her first morning, Mrs. Thompson served baked beans and toast for breakfast. Xia politely ate a few bites, though the salty beans couldn't satisfy her taste buds. Later, she whispered to her roommate Emma, “Do British people eat beans every morning?” Emma burst out laughing. “No! Mum thought you might miss Chinese breakfasts. She read online that beans are popular in Shanghai!” Xia realized Mrs. Thompson had mixed up Shanghai's sweet red bean desserts with British baked beans. Another challenge turned up during a school project. Xia's team needed to design a poster about climate solutions. While her British teammates freely debated (辩论) ideas, Xia hesitated to disagree with others, remembering her teachers' advice in China: “Group harmony matters most.” Noticing her silence, the teacher Ms. Wilkins came up to her, “Your opinion is valuable, Xia. In Britain, respectful debates often lead to better solutions.” Taking a deep breath, Xia shared her idea of using algae (藻类) to take in carbon dioxide — a concept she'd learned from her scientist father. The team loved it and won the first prize. By the trip's end, Xia had grown courageous. She even taught the Thompsons to make dumplings, laughing as Mr. Thompson accidentally dropped one on the cat. “Cultural exchange isn't about being perfect,” she wrote in her diary. “It's about listening, adapting, and finding joy in the messy middle.” ( )11.What was the main purpose of the Thompsons serving baked beans? A.To introduce traditional British food. B.To recreate a Shanghaistyle breakfast. C.To make fun of Chinese eating habits. D.To test Xia's adaptability. ( )12.Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined phrase “mixed up” in Paragraph 2? A.Cooked carefully. B.Thought wrongly. C.Purposely replaced. D.Turned up. ( )13.Why did Xia avoid disagreeing with her teammates in the beginning? A.She lacked confidence in her English. B.She found their ideas perfect. C.She valued team harmony over debate. D.She disliked the teacher's intervention (干涉). ( )14.Which lesson did Xia learn from her experience? A.Cultural exchange requires avoiding mistakes. B.Perfect understanding between cultures is impossible. C.Adaptation and communication bridge cultural differences. D.Western education systems are better than others. ( )15.How does the author organize the passage? A.By comparing British and Chinese customs. B.By asking questions and answering them. C.Through a personal growth story with examples. D.Through historical data of exchange programs. B Travelling around the world can be exciting, but it can also be challenging and lead to culture shock and feelings of stress. When I moved to Tuscany, Italy, right after college, I fell in love with the scenery. Who wouldn't be? The rolling hills, beautiful buildings and delicious food made the long flight worth every minute. I was excited about my new beginning. But then, I started to notice little things. As an American, we are used to a bit of personal space. Where I'm from, knocking into someone or standing very closely is considered quite impolite. This is different from the truth in Italy. Because there were no translation apps at that time, not knowing the language was also challenging. Sometimes, I would feel helpless. However, Italians like to speak with their hands—a habit I've carried over till this day. Gestures can express general ideas and feelings. Of course, just because you've experienced culture shock in one country doesn't mean you won't do so in another. Years later, when I moved to China, my experience was special. The culture there was something very foreign to me—down to how to buy things. Before moving there, I had never heard of some apps to buy things or communicate. I wasn't prepared at all for how important these things would be. Experiencing small waves of culture shock reminds me that I am travelling around the world and that I should appreciate what I'm taking in. AmericanBritish writer Bill Bryson said that “…the greatest reward of travel is…to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar that it is taken for granted (被认为是理所当然的).” ( )16.What is the culture shock to the writer in Italy? A.Italians are hard to get on with. B.Italians stand quite closely to each other. C.Italian scenery is not as beautiful as imagined. D.Italians are against learning foreign languages. ( )17.What helped the writer understand what Italians were saying? A.Translation apps. B.Hand gestures. C.Expressions. D.Pictures. ( )18.When arriving in China, what happened to the writer? A.The writer began to buy many things online. B.The writer learned to speak Chinese. C.The writer experienced culture shock again. D.The writer used some apps well. ( )19.What does the last paragraph mainly tell us? A.How to deal with different cultures. B.The trouble of travelling around the world. C.How to search for a best place to visit. D.The value of experiencing culture shock. ( )20.Where can we probably read this article? A.In a culture magazine. B.In a newspaper. C.In a travel guide. D.In a novel. C During my first year of learning Chinese, I found that my high school had a sisterschoolexchange program (项目) in Nanjing, China. Every summer, some students can study there and stay with host families for two and a half weeks. When I first heard about the chance to go to China, I knew I couldn't miss it. Fast forward to summer, I waved my family bye and flew to Beijing. On the first morning in China, I experienced a Chinese breakfast unlike anything I had ever tried. We spent three days in Beijing, going around the city and visiting famous landmarks. The highlight of our trip was the Great Wall. Seeing it in person for the first time was amazing even though I had seen hundreds of videos and pictures before. After our three days in Beijing, we took the train to Nanjing, where we would stay with our host families and attend classes given by our sister school. Although my host family did not speak English, they were super welcoming, which made me feel at home. On weekdays, we attended different classes at our sister school, including cooking, music, kungfu, custom, art, etc. I learned a lot about Chinese culture and how different it is from the American lifestyle. Although the study has been over, I am forever thankful to my high school for giving me the opportunity to exchange in China and to immerse (沉浸在) myself in its culture and meet amazing friends who I still keep in touch with today. I hope that one day I will have the chance to return to China and perhaps even live there at some point in my life! ( )21.How many days may the exchange program last? A.24 days. B.18 days. C.14 days. D.7 days. ( )22.According to Paragraph 2, why was the Great Wall the highlight of the trip? A.Because the Great Wall is a famous landmark. B.Because the Great Wall is an ancient building. C.Because the writer first saw the real Great Wall. D.Because the writer had seen the Great Wall in videos and pictures. ( )23.What can we learn from Paragraphs 2 and 3? A.The writer loved the trip in China. B.The writer loved eating Chinese breakfast. C.The writer flew from Beijing to Nanjing. D.The writer went to China with parents. ( )24.According to the writer, what are the meaningful parts of being an exchange student? ①Leaving parents. ②Staying in a host family. ③Knowing about a different culture. ④Making friends with local people. A.①② B.②③ C.③④ D.①④ ( )25.Where can we probably read this passage? A.In a novel. B.In a newspaper. C.In a film website.
