Baseball is very popular in America now, and it has a long history. Its history can date back to (追溯到) 1744, in a children's book A Little Pretty PocketBook in the UK. There was a game called baseball. Later on, people got to know much other early information about the baseball game.
In 1749, Frederick Louis, Prince of Wales, played “Baseball” in English. Then some students began to play with balls ruled by Princeton College in 1787. And a baseball club came into being in 1825.
The Boy's Own Book (1828) told the rules to today's game of baseball. People should play the baseball on a diamondshaped infield (菱形的内场). When a player hit (击) the ball through or over the infield, he could run. If the ball hit somewhere else, which was against the rule, he could not run. Three missed batting (击球) meant the player lost the game.
In The Book of Sports (1834) by Robin Carver, he brought the baseball to the Americans for the first time. And now, the baseball is very popular all over the world. Many people like playing it for fun. It's also a way to keep healthy.

Huang Xuhua, a great Chinese scientist, passed away on February 6th, 2025. But his great deeds and strong spirit will always stay in our hearts and keep lighting up China's way forward.
Huang Xuhua was born in Guangdong Province in 1926. When he was young, he saw the hard times of his country under foreign attacks (侵略). These sad memories made him study hard. He made a promise to make the country strong with his knowledge.
In the 1950s, when China started to develop nuclear submarines (核潜艇), it was a very difficult job. Huang Xuhua was not afraid and stood up bravely. At that time, there was not much advanced technology or many resources. It was like climbing a very steep mountain. But he and his team took on this challenge. To keep the project secret, they stopped contacting (联系) the outside world, even their families. Huang Xuhua left his hometown for many years.
During the design process, they met a lot of problems. For example, designing a nuclear reactor (核反应堆) was really hard. They couldn't get help from foreign experts, so they could only depend on their own research. They used simple tools like abacuses and slide rules (算盘和滑尺) to calculate and do experiments with great effort. Another important problem was to make sure the submarine was stable underwater. After many simulations and tests, they gradually overcame these problems.
Finally, in the 1970s, China's first nuclear submarine was built and tested successfully. This made China one of the few countries that had this ability. Huang Xuhua didn't stop after this big success. He went on to help with the development of submarine technology. His hard work and devotion won him many honors, including the “Medal of the Republic (共和国勋章)” in 2019.
Now, when we think of him, we know that his life can inspire us a lot. We, especially the young people, should learn from his spirit. Let's take on the responsibility, face challenges bravely, and work hard to make China stronger. In this way, his spirit will live on forever.

Some fish weigh more than a fridge. Some fish look like cows. Now, getting to know these very special creatures is becoming easier. On a new website, called the Encyclopaedia of Life (EOL), you will find basic facts on about 30,000 speciesor kindsof fish.
But as surprising as 30,000 fish sounds, it's just a baby step for the website. Its designers dream of making it the largest biological (生物学的) encyclopaedia ever, with a web page for every living species.
“Although there are already a lot of websites about living things, and a lot of encyclopaedias too, they're not the best tools for scientists,” say the encyclopaedia's designers. Scientists need websites with information that has been doublechecked by other scientists. A dream site would include links to all the basic research and also automatically (自动地) update itself as new research is published. Finally, even people who aren't scientists should be able to use such a site to get to know what's living in their backyards or anywhere else in the world.
Think of it as one huge book that can keep growing in size—to millions of pages. If those pages were made of paper, the book would become large and heavy and hard to update. However, because it's used online, anyone who has a computer can search its pages easily. Moreover, those new pages can be added quickly.
( )21.What's The Encyclopaedia of Life?
A.An organization studying special species.
B.A website where people can find information of about 30,000 fish.
C.A meeting where people discuss the research of the living things.
D.A large, heavy book which is a record of living things.
( )22.What do the underlined words “a baby step” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.An important project.
B.A difficult problem.
C.A new beginning.
D.A tiny success.
( )23.What can be inferred from today's websites and encyclopaedias about living things?
A.They are not the best tools for scientists.
B.They provide wrong information.
C.They seldom update the information.
D.They are easy to search for information.
( )24.What's the aim (目标) of the EOL designers?
A.To make the encyclopaedia popular.
B.To provide description of every species.
C.To give correct information to the scientists.
D.To challenge the other websites and encyclopaedias.
( )25.Which one is the best title of this passage?
A.A “Book” of Life
B.A Dream Website
C.An Automatic Encyclopaedia
D.A Surprising Tool
