Volleyball became my sport for two reasons. Primarily, my parents wanted me to try out a sport that could make me enjoy workouts. I also knew that my mom loved playing it in Venezuela during her youth. I thought maybe I could feel the same. Indeed, I fell in love with it after just a couple of practices.
Between practices, I would stretch (伸出)my arms out, hold my hands together and push my wrists down to try to build muscle memory of the perfect platform. I would catch the ball, focusing on forming a triangular (三角形的)shape each time, with my right hand guiding the movement. Each time I’d release the ball upwards, I knew I was one try closer to getting it right. I worked tirelessly because I wanted to get better. I wanted to be great one day.
However, I lacked the head start most girls had. I started playing years after many other girls had. I was thrown into the deep end when the club where I practiced placed me on their most competitive team for my age group mid-season. Most of the girls did not welcome me. While this competition within and between teams was sometimes productive, it proved to be unhealthy. It was dangerous when it reached a tipping point. By the end of my freshman year of high school, I’d reached my breaking point.
Over four years, I only touched a volleyball a couple of times and only in casual settings. When the opportunity came to play with one of my best friends in a series of friendly matches, I hesitated. I eventually agreed, making it a point not to be so hard on myself. Volleyball finally brought the same enjoyment that had made me fall in love with it. I look forward to every opportunity I have to play now. I expect there will be more volleyball matches.
39. Why did the author choose to play volleyball?
A. To find joy in exercise. B. To copy her mother’s experience.
C. To be a great player. D. To prove herself to others.
40. How is paragraph 2 developed?
A. By telling a story about her teammates. B. By explaining her training purpose.
C. By comparing different training methods. D. By listing specific actions and details.
41. What does the text indicate?
A. Early practice guarantees better performance.
B. Joy returns when you ease up on yourself.
C. A strict coach makes a great player.
D. Pressure sometimes breaks a person.
C
As birth order (出生顺序) is clearly one of the many reasons that affect development, we should pay much attention to it. Big brothers and sisters usually develop leadership early in life, mainly because of the responsibilities for younger children given to them by their parents. The danger is that if the older child takes that role to an extreme (极限), he or she can become an overbearing person who won’t listen to others because they think they are the leaders.
Studies of nearly 300 people have found that a person’s first child is usually the most strongly motivated towards achievement. This is mainly the result of parental expectations. Research also suggests that firstborn children generally become more conservative than other children because they receive most of the parental orders and rules. Used to caring for others, they are more likely to move towards such leadership professions as teaching and politics. Less social and flexible because they become accustomed in the very early years to acting alone, they may have difficulty making close friends.
By contrast, the researchers say later children are more likely to be more relaxed and sociable than the eldest child because their parents are more relaxed. However, later children are often less ambitious and may be uncomfortable making decisions for others, and will seek work that fits their needs. This may help explain why younger children are easy to like jobs such as music, art, and writing. Later children may be good sellers because persuasion (劝说) may have been the only tool they had to deal with older children. Younger children tend to remain forever “the baby” enjoyable to be around, but at times too dependent on others.
42. What can we infer from the first paragraph?
A. Birth order is the top factor influencing a person’s development.
B. Older siblings’ early leadership has nothing to do with their parents.
C. An older child may be unwilling to accept others’ opinions.
D. All elder brothers and sisters will turn into overbearing people eventually.
43. What might a younger child want to be according to the passage?
A. A librarian. B. A doctor. C. A writer. D. A teacher.
44. Why may later children become good sellers?
A. They feel uneasy when making decisions for other people.
B. They are very good at persuading others.
C. They have great wishes to develop leadership.
D. They are good at selling books and enjoying freedom.
45. What’s the best title for this passage?
A. Which Is Better: Being the Eldest or the Youngest?
B. Birth Order and Marriage
C. The Relation Between Birth Order and Job Success
D. Effects of Birth Order on One’s Personality

【答案】39. A 40. D 41. B

【40题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中的“Between practices, I would stretch (伸出) my arms out, hold my hands together and push my wrists down to try to build muscle memory of the perfect platform. I would catch the ball, focusing on forming a triangular (三角形的) shape each time, with my right hand guiding the movement.(训练间隙,我会伸出双臂,双手合拢,下压手腕,建立完美垫球姿势的肌肉记忆。我会接球,每次专注摆出三角形,用右手引导动作。)”可知,第二段列举训练的具体动作与细节来展开叙述。
【41题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“I eventually agreed, making it a point not to be so hard on myself. Volleyball finally brought the same enjoyment that had made me fall in love with it.(我最终同意了,并特意不给自己太大压力。排球终于再次带来了当初让我爱上它的那种快乐。)”可推断出,当你对自己放松要求时,快乐就会回归。
【答案】42. C 43. C 44. B 45. D
【解析】

【43题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“This may help explain why younger children are easy to like jobs such as music, art, and writing.(这可能有助于解释为什么年幼的孩子容易喜欢音乐、艺术和写作等工作。)”可知,年幼的孩子可能喜欢音乐、艺术和写作等工作,因此他们可能想成为一名作家。故选C项。
【44题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Later children may be good sellers because persuasion (劝说) may have been the only tool they had to deal with older children.(排行靠后的孩子可能是很好的推销员,因为劝说可能是他们与年长孩子打交道的唯一工具。)”
因此,最适合本文的标题是“Effects of Birth Order on One’s Personality(出生顺序对个人性格的影响)”。故选D项。
