Amy Wolff, a 36-year-old public speaking coach in Newberg, Oregon, is the founder of the Don’t Give Up Movement, a nonprofit organization sowing seeds of love and hope through inspirational yard signs and other items. In May 2017, Amy learned from a church friend and teacher that the school district had lost two students and four former students that year because of their mental problems. Amy said, “I couldn’t do nothing.”
She recalled a crazy idea she’d had two years before: yard signs as a way of encouraging people. She asked her friend Jessica Brittell, a graphic designer, to create and print 20 signs with the messages “Don’t Give Up”, “Your Mistakes Do Not Define You” and “You Are Worthy of Love”.
Amy, her husband John, and their two daughters knocked on doors around Newberg, asking strangers to put the signs in their yards. Everyone said yes! People in the community were quick to talk about the signs. Within a week, Amy had sold 150 signs at cost.
Amy added new messages—“You Matter”, “You Are Not Alone”—as well as wristbands, stickers, car decals (贴纸), cards and other “symbols of hope and love”. Besides supporting those at risk for suicide, the movement has comforted people facing health problems, isolation, job loss, marital issues and abuse.
Jason Boyd, assistant principal of Seaside High in Seaside, Oregon, bought 225 signs to put up around the school. Students tell him, “The signs help us make it through the day.” More than 701,000 items have been distributed (分发) in all 50 states and 27 countries.
Don’t Give Up Movement doesn’t do any marketing. “It’s love with no strings attached,” said Amy. The movement has spread mainly through people spotting the signs and by word of mouth. Friends on cross-country trips left decals and cards in restaurants, stores and rest stops.
We should look for ways to spread hope and love in our daily lives. Buy a stranger a cup of coffee. Praise the server. Believe you always have something to offer—and do it unconditionally.
4. What is the main role of Amy Wolff according to the text?
A. A speaking coach.
B. A mother of two kids.
C. The wife of a man named John.
D. The founder of a nonprofit organization.
5. What made Amy Wolff start the Don’t Give Up Movement?
A. The wish to start a new business.
B. Her excellent public speaking skills.
C. The inspiration from a graphic designer friend.
D. Students’ mental problems in the school district.
6. How did Amy Wolff and her family first spread the signs?
A. By distributing posters in public places.
B. By creating a website and promoting them online.
C. By organizing community events and speaking engagements.
D. By knocking on doors and asking people to put them in their yards.
7. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Spread hope and love
B. How yard signs can change lives
C. Amy Wolff: A coach turned activist
D. The power of community in fighting suicide

Earth, our home, is the third planet from the sun. While scientists continue to hunt for life beyond Earth, our home planet remains the only place for human beings to live. On it, everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of lived out their lives. That’s home. That’s us.
Our Earth is a book written by Jane Calame. It’s also a helpful guide to caring for our planet. Our planet is unique for many reasons, but its fresh water and oxygen (氧气) are two key things. Water covers about 71% of Earth’s surface, with most of that water lying in our planet’s oceans. About a fifth of the air is oxygen, produced by plants. But water and air pollution is becoming more and more serious. The state of the natural world is alarming, making it a must for us to be knowledgeable about. But the future of Earth doesn’t have to be a negative one. This amazing children’s book has some cheerful pictures as it explains the planet we live on.
By providing ideas for ways in which we can all look after Earth in a workable and child-friendly manner (方式), Our Earth is the perfect book for educating environmentalists or any member of the next generation. The delightful (令人愉快的) pictures and easy-to-understand language make the underlying message in this book simple, and children aged eight or above will enjoy reading it.
Whether you choose to walk and ride your bike to school, or you’re sorting out your rubbish, or live a greener life with a good habit of little things, Our Earth teaches the reader that we can all play a part in shaping the future of the planet, no matter how small the action or how young the person is.
8. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To present a new discovery. B. To show we are a family on Earth.
C. To introduce the topic of the text. D. To explain the secret of Earth.
9. What makes Our Earth a perfect book to educate children?
A. Its clear ideas. B. Its writing style.
C. Its colourful pictures. D. Its useful knowledge.
10. What may the author agree with?
A. Every small act counts. B. Strike while the iron is hot.
C. He who laughs last laughs best. D. A friend in need is a friend indeed.
11. Where is the text most probably taken from?
A. A review of a play. B. A story on the Earth.
C. An introduction to a book. D. An advertisement for an activity.

D
Today we talk about pointless, useless actions. And we have an expression to help us do that. For this expression, let’s go to the beach!
For a beach trip, we bring several things that can make the trip more enjoyable. For example, a beach towel makes sitting on the sand more comfortable. Some people choose to bring a beach chair. And a beach umbrella protects you from the sun’s powerful rays. Swimming in the ocean can really make you hungry. So many people bring a cooler for food and drinks.
Making sandcastles on the beach is a fun activity. So, bringing sand-digging tools — like a shovel (铁铲) and a bucket — is a good idea. But you do not need to bring the sand. Most beaches have a lot of that already! And that brings us to today’s expression: “Bringing sand to the beach”.
“Bringing sand to the beach” describes actions that are pointless and unnecessary. The actions are futile. This means serving no purpose. “Bringing sand to the beach” can also mean overkill. Overkill means having more than what is necessary or useful. We usually say “like” when we use this expression. For example, bringing flowers to the opening of a flower store is like bringing sand to the beach.
We usually use “like bringing sand to the beach” when bringing something to a place is unnecessary. But you can also say the same idea with different objects and places. For example, I could also say it is “like bringing a sandwich to a restaurant”. With this example, the meaning goes one step further. It also means that what you are bringing (the sandwich) is of poorer quality than what you would find at the place (the restaurant).
12. How does the author introduce the expression discussed in the text?
A. By listing uncommon beach activities.
B. By describing a scene of a beach trip.
C. By comparing sand to other beach items.
D. By providing an example of a pointless action.
13. What does the underlined word “futile” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Useless. B. Common.
C. Dangerous. D. Meaningful.
14. What does the author think of the flowers brought to the opening of a flower store?
A. They are sweet. B. They are proper gifts.
C. They are not good enough. D. They are not needed there.
15. Which saying has a similar meaning to “bringing a sandwich to a restaurant”?
A. Seeing is believing.
B. Teaching a fish how to swim.
C. Killing two birds with one stone.
D. Thinking twice before you jump.
B 13. A 14. D 15. B
根据第一段“And we have an expression to help us do that. For this expression, let’s go to the beach! (我们有一个表达方式可以帮助我们说明这一点。为此,让我们去海滩吧!)”以及第二段“For a beach trip, we bring several things that can make the trip more enjoyable. For example, a beach towel makes sitting on the sand more comfortable. (去海滩旅行时,我们会带上几样东西,让旅途更加愉快。例如,沙滩巾让坐在沙子上更舒服。)”可知,作者通过描述海滩旅行的场景,引出文中讨论的习语。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段““Bringing sand to the beach” describes actions that are pointless and unnecessary. The actions are futile. This means serving no purpose. (“把沙子带到海滩”用来形容毫无意义、多余的行为。这类行为是____的,也就是没有任何作用。)”可知,futile与pointless and unnecessary、serving no purpose同义,意为“无用的”。
根据第三段“But you do not need to bring the sand. Most beaches have a lot of that already! (但你并不需要自带沙子,因为大多数海滩上已经有很多了!)”以及第四段“For example, bringing flowers to the opening of a flower store is like bringing sand to the beach (例如,给花店开业送花这件事,就如同把沙子带到海滩)”可知,作者认为花店开业,带花过去是多此一举,额外的花是花店不需要的东西。
根据最后一段“We usually use “like bringing sand to the beach” when bringing something to a place is unnecessary. But you can also say the same idea with different objects and places. For example, I could also say it is “like bringing a sandwich to a restaurant”. With this example, the meaning goes one step further. It also means that what you are bringing (the sandwich) is of poorer quality than what you would find at the place (the restaurant).(当把东西带到某个地方是多此一举的时候,我们常会用短语 “好比往海滩运沙子(多此一举)”。

A common goal of world language teachers is to have learners use the language in their real lives and appreciate and value cultures different ____44____ their own. In this regard, music _____45_____ (think) to be an invaluable tool for teachers and helps us achieve the common goal.
36. attractive
37. a 38. directly
39. that##which

43. to excite
44. from 45. is thought
Homing in on specific songs and their lyrics是动名词短语作主语,视为单数,所以谓语动词为builds。
固定句型make it +形容词 +to do sth,it作形式宾语,真正的宾语是后面的动词不定式,所以此处为to excite。

Lisa woke up on Saturday morning very excited. Today she was turning 10. She thought her mother would make her a special breakfast. Last year on her birthday, Lisa woke up to the smell of pancakes and sausage cooking. The kitchen table was full of fresh fruit and juice, and her family had even bought lots of fresh flowers to put on the table.
But when she went downstairs this morning, her father, mother and brother were eating cereal (麦片) at the table, just like any other day. No one even said “Happy birthday".
When the phone rang and her mother announced that Lisa’s aunt wanted to speak with her, she knew that it must be to wish her the best on her 10th birthday. But to Lisa’s surprise, her aunt simply wanted to remind her to pick up her mail the next week while her aunt was out of town.
Lisa was quite confused. She thought that her family would say something about her special day, but she didn’t want to seem upset. She tried to be cheerful. After all, she was looking forward to meeting her friends in the park soon. Surely they were going to be excited about her birthday.
When Lisa arrived at the park, her friend Jane was the first to greet her. “Nice day, isn’t it, Lisa?” she asked.
Lisa, ready for her friend to wish her a happy birthday, responded excitedly, “Yes, it is! It’s a great day. You know why?”
“Because it’s Saturday and the weather is great!” Jane replied.
Lisa nodded, but looked down in disappointment.
Soon the rest of her friends arrived, and they all had a good time playing soccer and spending time together. But Lisa couldn’t help but think that it was strange that none of them had mentioned her birthday.
As she walked home in the late afternoon sun, Lisa tried her best not to cry. How could everyone forget her birthday? She was close to tears by the time she reached her home.
When she walked in, she was quite surprised.

There was a box with her name on it in the living room. Thinking that it might be her birthday present, she went up and opened the box with delight. In the box lay a photo album filled with photos recording the important moments together with her family and friends as she grew up. Lisa sank in the precious memories: the first family who had made it! At that time, Lisa came to wonder where they were and began to search every room.
Paragraph 2:
No one was home, but there was a letter on the table. Her heart beating wildly, she reached out for that letter which was written by her family and friends, saying how great a family member and a friend she was. With tears welling up in her eyes, she found in surprise that she was already surrounded by her loved ones. “Happy birthday!” they said cheerfully and sent their best wishes to Lisa. All of them had a wonderful evening together, adding another chapter to Lisa’s album.
