Great excitement spread around us when we sailed to Antarctica on a ship and stayed in its warm room, One morning, we saw a sign. It gave all passengers a chance to take part in the Polar Plunge (极地跳水).
My husband and I stared at the sign. His face brightened, but I felt a wave of panic in my stomach. Hundreds of reasons not to do it filled my mind. “No way,” I said, “For starters, we’re much too old. The water’s freezing cold. I’m not much of a swimmer. Not only that,” I complained, “but it means I’d have to wear a swimsuit in public with so many people looking at my imperfect body.” He gave me a quick hug along with his warm smile. “We’ll never have another chance,” he insisted. My determination (决心) gradually weakened. My heart’s “No way” gave way to a weak “Maybe”: Finally, I forced myself to say, “Okay. Let’s go for it.”
Dressed in my swimsuit, I was nervous and shaking with anxiety as I gathered with my husband and other participants in the lower part of the ship. I eyed the group. A daring teenager tried to be first in line, while a twenty-something woman in a swimsuit also stepped forward. The remaining participants ranged in age from active young people to middle-aged adults who were joking and laughing. We two eighty-year-olds were clearly the ancient, senior citizens of the group.
Our turn came all too soon. We moved to the jump-off point, my legs shaking, but it was too late to turn back. We held each other’s hands together, took a deep breath, and took the Polar Plunge into the icy waters. After what seemed a century, we rose to the surface and swam to the safety platform. Shaking and laughing, I shouted excitedly, “I can’t believe I did that.” That afternoon, I gained my fame (名气) and became the focus of the day.

Ten years ago, at the height of blogging, I had a lovely little corner of the internet where I shared my life with photos — until I got a stalker (跟踪狂). He sent me hundreds of pages of frightening notes along with a photo of my children’s school. Since then, I have never posted anything personal.
So, when a group of friends and I went out to dinner recently and someone took out a phone for group photos, I did what I normally do and politely asked them not to post pictures of me. One friend, who updates her WeChat Moments daily, accused me of hating her. But it also got me thinking: Is it rude to post a photo of someone without asking first?
Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University showed that by using facial recognition tool on a photo of a stranger, they could get that person’s name, location, interests and even, in some cases, their Social Security number through social media. Beyond the surveillance system (监控体系), there are plenty of everyday reasons why people might not want to appear in a photo. They might dislike their appearance in pictures. Maybe they want to keep their personal information private, or they feel nervous when facing a camera. All of these reasons are valid.
Here’s the other side, a big and practical one: we live in a world where photographing everything has become completely normal. If everyone needed permission (允许) from every person in the background of a group photos, social media would stop working. You’d need written permission papers at every gathering, a witness at every birthday party, and a law team on call just to post a brunch photo.
As with most etiquette (礼仪) questions, the answer is, “It depends.” The relationship matters too — your best friend of 20 years is different from a work contact. And the platform on which the photo is shared is also an important matter.
28. Why did the author stop posting personal information online?
A. She argued with her friend about photos.
B. She suffered from a stalker’s threat.
C. She found blogging unpopular at that time.
D. She worried about her children’s school life.
29. What does the underlined word “valid” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Acceptable. B. Interesting. C. Confusing. D. Unexpected.
30. What is the best title for the text?
A. Good Behaviors in Social Communication
B. The Risk of Using Facial Recognition Tool
C. How to Protect Your Personal Information Online
D. Is It Rude to Post Others’ Photos Without Asking
31. What will the author probably discuss in the following paragraph?
A. Ways to avoid being followed by a stalker online.
B. Advice on choosing proper social media platforms.
C. Tips to decide when to ask for photo permission.
D. New research about facial recognition technology.

When you’re feeling sad, angry or stressed, it might be easy to ask a chatbot (聊天机器人) for help. In fact, a new study of 12- to 21-year-olds showed that nearly 1 in 5 of them had turned to AI for mental (精神的) health support. That’s up from 1 in 8 just a few years ago.
Clearly, there is a big need among young people for mental and emotional support. But chatbots aren’t real people with feelings. And free, general-use chatbots such as ChatGPT, Meta AI and Character AI are not designed to provide mental health support. They are not allowed to offer therapy (心理治疗) — or follow rules for treating patients — the way humans do.
“A chatbot could help you learn more about mental health problems,” says Vaile Wright, a psychologist in Chicago. “An AI might even be able to offer some basic advice if you’re struggling in the moment and don’t know where else to turn. But treating a chatbot like a therapist is not wise.” Wright explains that it becomes risky when you keep talking with the chatbot for a long time to fill your emotional needs.
A real therapist’s goal is to help their patient. Chatbots are different. “They’re purposely designed to keep people on the platform for as long as possible,” Wright says. “The way they do that is just telling people exactly what they want to hear,” That might feel good. But it’s not what a therapist would do.
There is very little research right now on the long-term effects of using AI for mental health. What we do have a lot of research on is how much social connection and human contact are important for health. Relying on AI might stop the development of necessary connections with real people.
32. What is the function of the number in paragraph 1?
A. To warn teenagers the unseen risks of AI tools.
B. To present teenagers’ ways to handle bad emotions.
C. To prove chatbots can solve teenagers’ mental trouble.
D. To show more teenagers seek help from chatbots.
33. What is Vaile Wright’s attitude towards treating chatbots as therapists?
A. Opposed. B. Amazed. C. Doubtless. D. Uninterested.
34. How do chatbots achieve their purpose?
A. By answering users’ questions quickly.
B. By recording users’ daily feelings.
C. By offering practical suggestions.
D. By saying what users hope to hear.
35. What does the author suggest about AI for mental health?
A. It has long-term benefits. B. It needs more research.
C. It can replace human. D. It gives useful advice.

Ways to Pick a Perfect Travel Destination

●Keep your safety.
40 Although you cannot know every danger, keep an eye on trends that point to any unexpected danger. For international travel, always check government websites for travel warnings and avoid areas with known safety risks.
Following these steps will help you choose a destination that not only fits your wallet and schedule but also provides an enjoyable and worry-free experience.

D. But with the right steps, you can make it stress-free,
E. This review will help you find the right place quickly.

Emily loves running, playing, and exploring the world around her the most. She is a curious and brave little girl who loves discovering new things outdoors. However, she has a big problem: she does not like school.
At school, Emily has difficulty sitting quietly in her seat and focusing on lessons. Long, quiet classes bore her. She often wants to share her ideas immediately, which sometimes troubles her classmates. When classes are boring to her, she dreams of outdoor adventures. Her parents and teachers have tried all ways they could to help her. They talked to her patiently or criticized (批评) her seriously, but nothing worked.
As new semester came near, Emily’s parents didn’t know what to do. They didn’t know how to deal with Emily’s difficulty following school rules. They worried that she might never learn to act well or learn to control herself. But then they had a great idea: they would take Emily camping for the first time. They hoped this outdoor trip would help improve her attitude and habits.
Since it was Emily’s first time camping, she felt both excited and a little neverous. However, after arriving at the campsite and exploring the area, she loved it. She enjoyed learning about the plants and animals living in the forest and was very interested in the stars at night. She even learned how to build her own small shelter and cook food over the campfire.
After several camping trips, Emily’s parents saw some changes in her. She could focus better and take part in activities more actively. She also became much politer than before. She listened carefully to her parents’ instructions and patiently finished every task they gave her.
