In a digital world where screens often take center stage, a small bookstore in the heart of the city has found a remarkable way to bring the joy of physical books back to young readers.
The idea began when the owner noticed that many children preferred to spend their free time on electronic devices rather than reading paper books. She decided to create a “Book Rescue” program. Once a month, she collects unwanted or damaged books from the community, repairs them by hand, and then gives them away to children for free.
“A book should not be thrown away just because it’s a little worn,” she says. “Every book has a story—not just the one written on its pages, but the one it carries as an object in someone’s life.”
Since the program started, hundreds of children have received free books. Many of them have become regular readers. What’s more, the program has encouraged children to repair their own books with simple tools like glue and tape.
“I used to think if a book got torn, I had to buy a new one,” says 12-year-old Mia, a regular visitor. “Now I know I can fix it myself. It makes the book even more special to me.”
The bookstore has turned reading into an act of care—for books, for the environment, and for the community. In a time when digital reading is on the rise, this small act of repair reminds us that a physical book can be something more than just words on paper.

D. It recycles them into new paper.

B. She enjoys the process of repairing books.
C. She thinks buying new books is a waste of money.
D. She only borrows books from the bookstore.

A new study shows that mindfulness meditation (冥想) can truly help lower pain levels.
For centuries, people in some cultures have used meditation as a way to deal with pain. But it was thought that the effect was similar to that of a placebo (安慰剂)—that the power of suggestion (暗示) made people expect they would feel less pain, even if they really didn’t. However, researchers from the US found that mindfulness meditation may be more powerful than we thought.
According to the website Very Well Mind, mindfulness meditation is a mental training practice that teaches you to slow down racing thoughts, let go of negativity (消极性), and calm both your mind and body. It mixes meditation with the practice of mindfulness, which means paying full attention to the present moment, and accepting your thoughts and feelings without judgment.
One hundred and fifteen people took part in the study. Scientists recorded how they reacted to pain. They were put into four groups. One group did mindfulness meditation. One did “unreal” meditation that only focused on breathing. And another spent time listening to audiobooks. The fourth group had a cream put on their legs. They were told it would reduce pain, but it was actually a placebo. All participants were then exposed to pain—in the form of a very hot probe (探针) on the backs of their legs—while an MRI scanner looked at their brain activity. They were also asked to rate (评估) their pain levels.
The results showed that the mindfulness meditation group felt much less pain than the others. In fact, MRI scans proved that their brain activity related to pain was reduced more. The research team said mindfulness meditation might actively treat pain in a way a placebo cannot do.
18. Before the new study, what did people think about meditation’s effect on pain?
A. It only made people feel calmer.
B. It worked better than real medicine.
C. It was like a placebo—just a mental trick.
D. It made the pain completely disappear.
19. According to the study, what is the key feature of mindfulness meditation?
A. To breathe deeply and slowly. B. To focus only on past memories.
C. To listen to books while resting. D. To pay full attention to the present without judging.
20. What did the MRI scans show about the mindfulness meditation group?
A. Their brains felt more pain than others.
B. Their brains reacted less to pain.
C. They needed more cream to reduce pain.
D. They could not stand the hot probe.
21. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. Mindfulness Meditation: A New Way to Relieve Pain
B. The History of Meditation Practices
C. How to Reduce Pain Through Placebos
D. The Science Behind MRI Scans and Pain

Time flies when you play on your smartphone. But when you get down to the real business of work and study, one hour feels like a year. Why are we so attracted (被吸引) by smartphones but easily bored by studying?
It all boils down to something small and hard to see: dopamine. Dopamine is a “pleasure chemical (化学物质)” that makes people feel good. Our brains give it out when we eat yummy food, after we exercise or when we get a prize.
Compared with studying, playing on smartphones causes our brains to give out more dopamine. For example, checking your phone for a text leads to a 400 percent increase in dopamine. But why?
When we visit social media, we don’t know what we’ll see next, or who will give opinions about things we post. This “magic of maybe”, makes the dopamine system active. We get excited wondering if we have messages from our friends. When our expectations are met, dopamine is given out.
And to find more dopamine, we continue checking our phones. Studying doesn’t provide such magic. Without this excitement, we get bored much more easily.
Can we do something to change that? According to scientists, apps can become less attractive if we turn off notifications (通知) or change the screen colors to black and white. We can also set time limits (设置时间限制) on apps so that we do not overuse them.
“As for studying, you could check your progress daily or weekly and reward yourself for it”, said Daniel Wong, writer of The Happy Student, “You could also search for interesting topics connected with your textbook. Use what you’ve learned to make an influence in the real world. This will make knowledge much more interesting to learn”.
22. What might the underlined phrase “boils down to” mean in Paragraph 2?
A. results from B. turns out C. leads to D. works out
23. When do people have more dopamine?
A. When they know what will happen next.
B. When they stay in a familiar environment.
C. When they get used to something.
D. When their expectations are met.
24. Which statement is TRUE according to the passage?
A. We are attracted by smartphones but easily bored by studying.
B. Our brains give dopamine out before we exercise or get a prize.
C. The “magic of maybe” excites us when we receive messages.
D. Apps can become less attractive if we change the sound of notifications.
25. Which of the following might Daniel Wong suggest to make learning interesting?
A. Setting time limits on everything you do.
B. Using what you learn from textbooks to do things in real life.
C. Stopping playing and finding more interests in real life.
D. Reading the interesting part in your textbooks before reading the others.

A. Children didn’t like reading at all.
B. There were not enough bookstores in the city.
C. Children preferred electronic devices to paper books.
D. The cost of new books was too high.

A. It sells them at a lower price.
B. It donates them to libraries.
C. It repairs and gives them away for free.
D. It recycles them into new paper.
16. What can be inferred from Mia’s words?
A. She rarely reads paper books.
B. She enjoys the process of repairing books.
C. She thinks buying new books is a waste of money.
D. She only borrows books from the bookstore.
17. Which of the following best summarizes the text?
A. How to repair damaged books at home.
B. The increasing popularity of digital reading.
C. The history of a local bookstore in the city.
D. A bookstore that brings new life to old books.

D

Peking Opera, also called Jingju, listed by UNESCO as the intangible cultural heritage of humanity, is the most important one among hundreds of forms of local operas in China. It arose in the late 18th century and has a history of more than two hundred years.
Peking Opera, which combines singing, dancing, acrobatics and martial arts, is sung and recited using the Beijing dialect. The music of Peking Opera plays a key role in setting the pace of the show, creating a particular atmosphere, shaping the characters, and guiding the progress of the stories. The art form has spread to many other countries and is enjoyed all around the world. Many children in China receive training in Peking Opera classes or practise Peking Opera. However, some artists still worry that Peking Opera is challenged by new forms of entertainment, like many traditional art forms. They are trying to do something for Peking Opera.
Tao Qingmei, a traditional arts scholar at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, co-wrote the book The Marvelous Game with Guo Baochang. Guo, a film director, is a Peking Opera fan who has loved Peking Opera since he was a kid. It has been his long-time wish to write a book on Peking Opera.
The boy on the new book cover is Guo Baochang's grandson. Guo and his grandson are playing a game by dressing up in roles from the classic Peking Opera piece, Shuang Bei Deng, which is a comedy. Tao and Guo spent years writing the book because they wanted to make it easy and fun for everyone. They hope young people will get to know more about Peking Opera and fall in love with it.
