It’s a cold night. After cycling eight kilometers, I get to Shanghai South Railway Station. It’s 10:21 p. m., just in time to catch the last bus home. As I take out my transportation card, the driver gives me a smile and says, “You again? You always get home this late.”
I’m not surprised that he remembers me. I often take the last bus. Some nights, I’m the only passenger (乘客) the whole way.
“Yeah, work is really busy these days,” I say.
“What do you do?” he asks.
“I’m an editor (编辑) at an English newspaper,” I answer.
“Oh, my daughter is an editor, too. It’s a tiring job, isn’t it?”
“It sure is. There’s a lot to take care of before everything’s ready. Driving a bus looks less tiring (不那么累). You can even enjoy the view (风景) while driving.”
“View?” the driver laughs. “Imagine driving the same run 16 times a day. For everyone’s safety, you must pay attention to the road. And sometimes I never get home until 1 a. m.”
“Oh! It’s so cold this late in this season!”
“It is,” the driver says. “But I love my job. When I was a kid, I dreamed of driving a bus. It makes me proud to get everyone to their destination safely!”

Do you see how the people who work in the fire station put out a fire when the fire breaks out in the forest? Now I’ll tell you something about smokejumpers and let you know more about them.
Smokejumpers are special firemen. They jump from planes into areas that are difficult to reach by car or on foot, like the middle of a mountain forest. They race to put out fires as fast as they can.
At a fire site, smokejumpers first check the lie (地形) of the land and decide how to fight the fire. They try their best to stop a fire from spreading (蔓延). Using their tools, smokejumpers clear burnable things like dry grass on the land. They usually take some water with them.
It’s true that most smokejumpers are men. But more women are joining. The important thing is that your height and weight (身高和体重) must be in a certain range (一定的范围). For example, smokejumpers in the U. S. must be between 55kg and 90kg in weight, so they won’t get hurt when they land, or in the strong winds.
Smokejumpers must also be able to live in the wilderness (野外). In Russia, many smokejumpers know how to find food in the forest and make simple tools. The work is dangerous, and the hours are long. But for smokejumpers, smokejumping isn’t just a job. They love being able to jump out of planes, fighting fires and living in the forest. As 28-year-old Russian smokejumper Alexi Tishin says proudly, “This is the best job for brave people.”
36. How do smokejumpers go to their work?
A. On foot. B. By train. C. By plane. D. By car.

B. most of them are under 28 years old
C. they have the right height and weight
D. there are no women smokejumpers
39. What can we know about Alexi Tishin?

C. He works short hours. D. He is good at flying a plane.
40. According to the text, the writer may agree that ________.
A. smokejumpers are a new kind of job that many young people like
B. the smokejumpers work in communities to fight fire
C. the work of smokejumpers is interesting
D. we should be proud of smokejumpers and respect them

If you are hiking with a friend who is overweight (超重的), you may hear them say that the hills look steeper (更陡) and the distances look farther away than what they really are. Is your friend lazy (懒惰的)? In fact, this is just what the world looks like in their eyes.
Scientists from Colorado State University show that being overweight distorts perception (扭曲知觉).
In one study, scientists asked 66 people of different weights and sizes to say how far away a traffic sign was. In fact, the sign was 25 m away. Those who were about 57 kg thought it was just 15 m from them, but those who were about 146 kg saw it as being 30 m away.
So far from being crazy, overweight people just see the world differently when thinking about exercise. The heavy weight can feel like a load (重物) to carry.
“If you find yourself out hiking with a heavy bag, hills are going to look steeper, distances are going to look farther, and a space across a river is going to look bigger,” Jessica Witt from Colorado State University told the Guardian.
It’s this idea that if you have to make more of an effort to climb that hill because you are carrying this heavy bag, the hill is going to look more challenging.
“You are not seeing that hill as it is. You are seeing the world through your ability (能力) to act. You have less ability because you are having to carry this bag,” Witt said. Sometimes the steepest hills are in the mind before the feet feel them.
41. Why may an overweight hiker see a hill as steeper than it really is?
A. Because they don’t want to exercise.
B. Because they need glasses.
C. Because they’re not good at hiking.
D. Because their body makes challenges look bigger.
42. According to the study, we know that ________.
A. overweight people think the traffic sign is farther because they are crazy
B. overweight people are too lazy to do exercise
C. people’s weight had an effect on how far they thought the sign was
D. overweight people like to carry a load with them when hiking
43. Jessica Witt compared (把……比作) carrying extra body weight to ________.
A. hiking with a heavy bag B. going up a hill on a bike
C. wearing shoes of bad quality D. walking in bad weather
44. What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph mean?
A. Everyone sees the world in the same way.
B. People see things based on (基于) what they can easily do.
C. Only strong people see things in the right way.
D. Your eyes change when you exercise.
45. What does the writer want to tell readers?
A. Hiking is really hard for overweight people.
B. It’s important to be the right weight and size.
C. Everyone should pay attention to their health.
D. We should understand that people experience challenges differently.

A. a
B. an
C. the

A. with B. in C. without
【答案】C
【解析】

A. What B. How C. What an
【答案】A
【解析】

—You’re quite right.
A. as well as B. as soon as C. as long as
【答案】C

as well as也;as soon as一……就……;as long as只要。根据“I think nothing is difficult...we try our best to do it”可知,后半句是前半句的条件,表示“只要”尽力就没有困难,应用as long as引导条件状语从句。

A. hiking with a heavy bag B. going up a hill on a bike
C. wearing shoes of bad quality D. walking in bad weather

A. Everyone sees the world in the same way.
B. People see things based on (基于) what they can easily do.
C. Only strong people see things in the right way.
D. Your eyes change when you exercise.
45. What does the writer want to tell readers?
