The first time I realized that I had a love for sports competitions was during the
Field Day in elementary school.Small for my age,and more of a bookworm than a
sports enthusiast,I had suffered that special humiliation of being picked last for various
gym teams. The Field Day,which focused on individual skills, was different. In the
Softball 'Throw event,I got my first taste of sporting victory.Credit goes to the example
of my first coach,my father. He lifted weights every morning at home.He bought us
all baseball gloves and hats, and in the warm months,we spent hours playing catch.
Come fall, our backyard football games began with passing practice.
Once I got to sixth grade and switched to private school, our entire student body
was assigned to either the Red or the White team.Throughout the year.we competed
against each other in various games and exercises for points.I eventually became
president of The Committee of Games, accelerating (my competitive fever.
However,in girls'sports games at my school,I was no star.I also played on the field
hockey team and the basketball team.School sports did not bleed into the weekends,as
they do today, but at home, playing tennis, skating, skiing and biking were simply
normal things we did.During break time, magazines were also quite popular for us
teens. These regularly featured articles on physical exercise.Somehow,my college
roommate and I took up the habit of completing Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF)
exercises every day,a practice that continued into my marriage, when we had no spare
funds to use to join a gym.
So,though it shocks some of our friends, that early foundation evolved in
adulthood into a sports and fitness focus, considered essential even on vacation.I still
love reading and the arts, too. As far as I'm concerned, life is the richest with my feet
in both worlds.

D.She kept her love for sports.
27 What is the author's purpose in writing the article?
A+To describe how her father built her interest in sports.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (I'CM)has been around for thousands of years. But
recently,it has found a new stage:social media. From the well-known gua sha tools to
the practice of drinking hot water.TCM-inspired habits are becoming popular in health
routines around the world.
Videos on platforms like TikTok and Instagram romanticize TCM practices. They
show people boiling apples for better digestion..hanging iced coffee to hot water,or
wearing slippers indoors-small habits like these are presented as keys to a longer,
healthier life.
But what is behind this trend?Unlike Western medicine, which often treats
symptoms one by one,TCM focuses on balance within the body.It uses ideas
such as qi (vital energy),yin and yang, and the interaction between the body and its
environment. The goal is to prevent illnesses and achieve a harmonious state.
rather than simply reacting to illness.
However.the rapid spread of these traditions online raises concerns. On social
media-complex traditions are often simplified into bite-sized habits like "drink hot
water"or"avoid cold foods".When practices that developed over.centuries are reduced
to quick advice, the deep philosophical and cultural bases behind them can disappear.
What remains is a simplified version of a much richer system of knowledge.
There are also practical concerns. While many people use TCM for relaxation and
preventative care, scientists note that some herbal (treatments lack enough
medical evidence and can even'carry risks. The line between a cultural practice and
medical advice can easily be unclear online.
Despite these debates, the popularity of Chinese wellness reflects a real search for
balance in today's fast-paced world.Whether people are embracing the deep philosophy
or simply the beauty of these traditions,it's clear that TCM has firmly entered the global
self-care conversation.
28.How do online platforms present TCM practices according to the passage?
A.As romantic personal choices.
B.As advanced medical treatments.
C.As fashionable lifestyle habits.
D.As easy-to-follow daily health tips.
29.What is a key feature of TCM's approach compared with Western medicine?
A.It aims at inner harmony.
B.It treats each symptom separately.
C.It depends on the environment.
D.It uses traditional Chinese medicine.
30.What concern does the author raise about the spread of TCM on social media?
A.Unclear herbal treatments.
B.Unnecessary medical expense.
C.Overemphasis on quick advice.
D.Loss of deeper cultural meaning.
31.What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To discuss TCM's rising online popularity.
4
B.To describe how to use I'('M practices.
C.To argue TCM is better than Western medicine.
D.To warn against online TCM health trends.

All the time you spent memorizing multiplication tables(乘法、表)may have made
you a better mathematician().according to a new study.A team of scientists
from Stanford University,in California.hus shown how the brain rcorganizes itself as
kids leam maths.
After a certain amount of time spent practising maths.kids can put away the
calculator()They don'l even necd to count on their fingers. They simply know
the answers to subtraction (-)addition ()and multiplication(x)facts. The quicker
kids can recall basic maths facts.the casier it is for them to solve more difficult maths
problems.
The Stanford University rescarchers observed()the brain activity of 28
students, ages 7 to 9,for the study. They took scans of the students'brains as the
students solved maths calculations without the help of a calculator, pen or paper.A
calculation-three plus four equals seven.for example-flashed on a screen.The
students pushed a button to say if the answer was right or wrong. The scientists aiso
recorded the response speed, and what parts of the brain became active as the kids
pushed the button.
These observations showed a process called fact retrieval.Rather than using their
fingers to count,or scrawling out equations()on a piece of paper, the students
pulled the answers from memory. It's as if the answers to basic subtraction, addition.
and multiplication problems are kept in a long-term storage part in the brain. The
storage part was built from repetition."Experience really does matter,"said Dr Kathy
Mann Koepeke of the National Institutes of Health.
Children make the change from counting to fact retrieval when they are 8 to 9
years old,the study says. This is the time when most students are learning basic addition
and subtraction. When kids have basic maths facts memorized, the brain has more free
space to learn more difficult maths..
This process has benefits for the future. The study showed,as kids got older.their
answers relied more on memory and became quicker and more correct.Less brain
activity was involved in counting. Some children make this change quicker than others.
Scientists hope to use this research to develop new strategies to help kids leam
maths at all levels. One strategy the study suggests is for students to test themselves in
different orders-solving five times three before five times two,for example.Mixing up
the order keeps the brain active.Keep up the training, and you may be a maths whiz in
no time.
32.In the study, kids put away calculators because they can
A.use calculators well
B scrawl out equations
C.recall basic maths facts
D.count on their fingers
33.The process of "fact retrieval"in Paragraph 4 probably means
A.picking out results by working logether with their partners
B.finding out answers based on practising carefully and patiently
C.trying out ways of dealing with problems by attending training
D.working out problems according to what they have remembered
34.What can we know from the study?
A.Kids need to practice using calculators to keep their brains active.
B.Maths learners should change to counting practice at the age of 8 to 9
C.Training by mixing up the order of multiplication tables helps learn maths better.
D.Less brain activity was involved in solving difficult problcms when kids get older
35.What is the best title of the passage?
A.Maths from Memory
B.Strategy Development
C.Brain Reorganization
D.Training by Repetition

high-quality education and shaping generations of Albany's children.
Frankly speaking,Anthony was neither the brightest student, nor the most athletic
in the school, but he had a real enthusiasm for learning and always approached his
studies with strong curiosity.Every moming,he would greet the school day with a wide
and genuine smile that brightened the entire classroom. His classmates couldn't help
