Unit 1 Art Five Centuries in One Hall: A Review for the Art Club
Write an art review for the art club(为艺术俱乐部写参观美术馆后的评论)
Last Friday we visited the new exhibition Five Centuries of Beauty. Its purpose is to bring Chinese and Western fine art together. The truth is that art is intended to serve humanity.
It begins in the Middle Ages, Giotto di Bondone painting humble figures, art teaching Christianity. Masaccio's breakthrough, perspective, turned primitive, two-dimensional pictures realistic, a third dimension added, realists pleased. The Renaissance brought Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael to noble heights, clients of high rank purchasing mythology scenes, Rembrandt choosing people that polite critics would criticise, criticism never shaking his reputation.
Impressionism emerged: Claude Monet, whose water lily pond at Giverny has a stone arch, painted sunrise; in subsequent decades he did not seek to record outer reality precisely but to convey subjective light. Renoir, influential, painted a joyful bride; then photography, decline, Picasso's Cubism. In particular I loved Chinese ink animation on display, Tadpoles Searching for Mother, every frame looking like a poem, beside The Cowboy's Flute and Feeling from Mountain and Water, visual symphonies set apart from Western realism.
The permanent memorial hall traces Buddhism's expansion with Buddhist art; the scroll Clearing After Snow on a Mountain Pass brings to life an age in precise detail, the guide noting that its painter failed to gain entry into the civil service. After four, no one was admitted. With sunset on ceramic vases and an unknown sculptor's bronze sculpture, I left fond of every gallery, moved by such artistic, humanistic work. The fact that it deserves investment makes it worthy of praise. What it proves is simple: studying old masters refreshes us.
In short: go, focus on one canvas; contemporary representative works of international recognition are guaranteed. Were I free, I would revisit. It is Monet who opened my eyes. Never have I seen a finer show.

Unit 2 Healthy Lifestyle How I Rebuilt My Routine: A Letter to the Editor
Write a letter to the editor about lifestyle changes(给编辑写信谈生活方式改变)
Dear Editor,
After your paper on teenage health, I thought about my habits. To change a bad habit is never easy. The truth is that bad habits form silently.
For years I abused tobacco and alcohol. Sugary drinks, skipped breakfast and the escalator left me dizzy, my physical health ruined, worn out. To rely on coffee to wake up was madness. A negative cue that came at the same time each day dominated my evening: one cigarette invited another, classmates falling into drug abuse. I grew pessimistic, stressed out, my psychology suffering. When the flu struck, a dentist examined my teeth, a surgeon, a PLA specialist, repeatedly warning me that delay could mean surgery. That disturbed me straight away.
Make up one's mind first. In response to their advice, I decided on a new routine: cigarettes replaced with nuts and water. I deleted the delivery app, every pill gone, shaved off my beard, and joined a monthly gym: bowling, my skateboard, comedy films, a consultant teaching discipline. Aristotle called excellence a habit; Laozi, the philosopher in our textbook, agrees. Small choices, repeated daily, facilitate bigger changes, enhancing body and mind.
Six months on, reward shows. What surprises me most is that resisting temptation no longer feels like a battle. Exercise stimulates my brain, helps me get refreshed and dynamic; liberation feels enormous. I have formed a habit of choosing well, become involved in its youth programme, absorbing discipline. My surgeon, whose words I remember, smiled at my last check-up.
Had I not changed, I would still be ill. The fact that routine is composed of small choices should encourage all. With the app deleted, I sleep well. Encouraged by these results, I will keep going. It was that warning that saved me. Never again will I abuse my body.
Yours truly, Li Hua

Unit 3 Environmental Protection A Proposal: Bring Our River Back to Life
Write a proposal on environmental protection(环保倡议书)
Our river needs help. Last month a scientist addressed us: "Do nothing, and the ice will melt, the seals will starve, no river will stay habitable," she said, adding that carbon dioxide and other emissions were changing the climate worldwide.
Our basin's graph shows the trend: enterprises released sewage and amounts of garbage, smog and methane rose, fish volumes fell, such gases having an impact on all downstream, penguins recalling colder seas. Experts warn the waterway's ecology is near collapse; fossil fuel use still causes damage to the water, hurricane seasons becoming annual events.
In effect, reform has begun: the mayor announced that strict regulations would restrict waste disposal, that every polluting enterprise would undergo inspection, and that heavy fines would result in change. Dozens of volunteers take measures: weekly reports submitted, reeds restored, conservation frequently broadcast, an energy policy implemented that cuts our carbon footprint. On behalf of the students' union, I propose a comprehensive campaign: moderate consumption, sustainable transport, a plastic restriction, emissions originating daily. A sensitive ecology, once damaged, is hard to sustain.
Beyond the city, nature's agenda connects everything: tropical fish farms, jungle hills, a nuclear plant seizing chances to cut methane. Since Hurricane Katrina, cities from Norway to Svalbard learned it.
What she told us is simple: the choice is ours. Were we to ignore it, the river would sink into chaos. The truth is that a harmonious future depends on today's habits. Protecting the river means protecting ourselves. To make it happen, sign, share. With every enterprise held to account, water will clear. Encouraged by results, citizens join. Those who live beside a river, like our city, whose river nearly died, know its value. The fact that fish are returning rewards us. Never should we assume nature will tolerate unlimited abuse. It is we who must deal with it.

Unit 4 Adversity and Courage Holding On: What the Endurance Taught Me
Write a narrative about facing adversity(写一篇直面逆境的记叙文)
语法点:so/such...that...
In 1914, Ernest Shackleton set off for the Antarctic aboard the Endurance, whose name means staying power, hoping to cross Antarctica and reach the South Pole. My navy nephew gave me this episode, my lesson in adversity.
Perce Blackborow, turned down, hid in a cupboard aboard at the age of eighteen, assigned steward. The expedition went from bad to worse: stuck in cruel ice, hull crushed, sinking, abandoned. The cosy cabin unfortunately gone; fortunately a stove, blankets, furniture, a banjo, a bat and ball remained among their belongings. Such was the bitter, damp cold that fingers cracked, life so miserable that men wept. They made fire from scraps giving off smoke; no one selfish, no envy, a loyal party under Frank Wild keeping their spirits up, bad-tempered Thomas Orde-Lees working.
Shackleton resolved to seek rescue, setting off for South Georgia Island in an open boat without a motor. Under navigator Frank Worsley's thorough guidance, Tom Crean, Hubert Hudson and Lionel Greenstreet held on, every man enthusiastic about it. A dog barked; they cheered up, having managed to make it, Shackleton having promised that he would return.
All rescued, endurance triumphant. The crew persevered two years, their recreation, rugby on the ice, keeping resolution alive; Confucianism teaches perseverance wins. Companies advertise comfort, corporate advertising easy success, every candidate demanding a decent wage; these qualified sailors showed vigour, commitment, genuine motive in rough times.
What they proved was courage; had the crew lost heart, none would have returned. The truth is that resolution beats luck, the fact that nobody was left behind moving me. The boat launched, tested by storm, they never quit; reading of their voyage, I understand mine. To face adversity, throw away no hope. Never have I read of greater bravery; it is Shackleton who brought every man home.

Unit 5 Poems Small Images, Great Light: An Appreciation of The Crescent Moon
Write an appreciation of a poem(诗歌赏析)
Inversion)
For our poetry contest, deadline Friday, I chose Tagore's The Crescent Moon, not a poem of my own. Only after reading it from beginning to end did literary imagery come alive.
Tagore's poems are made up of delicate pictures: a bee on clover, a diamond dewdrop, a mockingbird, a butterfly on cherry blossom, the billy goat and bull of folk nursery rhyme. A string of images circles one dominant feeling, innocent wonder, innocence itself; the language to the point, every syllable making sense, the core mood intact.
Tagore's version, born of prose and drama, is popular with children. The Victorian era gave us Elizabeth Barrett Browning, who corresponded with Robert Browning daily, correspondence inspiring Sonnets from the Portuguese. From Shakespeare to Tagore, their respective arts show variation, nursery rhyme, sonnet and free verse respectively. Langston Hughes wrote of racial prejudice, winning civilians' sympathy, sympathetic to their pain.
Friends tease me, an amateur wrestling complicated rhyme, yet I tried haiku and cinquain, same format, each polished, paying attention to little things; the blank page awaits seeds that farmers sow. I told my teacher that it changed me. What I gained was comprehension of how poems are based on honest feeling.
Had I not come across Tagore on that shelf, I would never have started. The truth is that poetry makes all the difference. The fact that one poem holds grief, sorrow and joy amazes me. Best are the lines that stay longest; the book, whose images revolve like seasons, rewards rereading. Reading Tagore aloud, I hear brass-like rhythm. To appreciate a poem, wherever found, slow down. The page finished, I recite at dawn on the lawn. Written with utter simplicity, it never ages. It is Tagore who convinced me of it. So delicate is it that I return in barren times.
