It’s necessary that the heads of schools recognize the role after-school activities can play. Enlarging your school’s clubs is worth the effort. Here are four amazing clubs that offer something a little different.
Karaoke Club
For two hours each Friday, educator Jonathan Hamer’s classroom changes into Karaoke Club. It started with a simple Bluetooth speaker, a microphone, and a laptop but now has developed into an interactive (互动式的) concert experience with well-equipped facilities, where students sing their favorites by themselves or with friends, showing their feelings, or simply enjoy an electric atmosphere.
Chicken Coop Club
A free schoolyard corner is enough for a chicken club. The first part is teaching students facts about chickens, from an egg to chicken nutrition and incubation (孵化) periods. Then the students head out to visit chickens and feed them in person. Droppings are gathered for plants, and the school’s kitchen makes use of the eggs.
Smoothie Club
Students are divided into two groups. One group works on creating a recipe. They decide which fruits to use, what liquids to add, and whether to include sweeteners. The other group listens and records the ingredients (成分) to create a recipe card to be broadcast the following week, sharing their recipe with the rest of the school.
Nail Art Club
A nail art club gives students the opportunity to experiment with different colors and styles, which is a perfect way to have fun without hurting their natural nails. Some weeks have a theme while others are more open so that students can freestyle. Nail art allows the kids to express themselves in a less traditional way.
21. Who is the passage designed for?

C. School leaders. D. Club organizers.
22. What do Karaoke Club and Nail Art Club have in common?

23. Which after-school activity requires group work?
A. Karaoke Club. B. Chicken Coop Club.
C. Smoothie Club. D. Nail Art Club.

From a young age, I had difficulty with math. Words and stories were easy for me, but numbers seemed like a different language. My father patiently used pencils to show me problems. However, my mind always focused on the stories behind the numbers. Although he tried to help, he sometimes became frustrated. His critical words about my math skills slowly made me anxious and less confident.
In school, my problems increased. A geometry (几何) teacher’s sharp words and my low grades seemed to prove my fears were true. My mother found a tutor, a college student. Even his clear explanations left my mind soon after he was gone. What stayed was a strong fear of math, a feeling many people now call “math anxiety”.
Yet life continued. I got married, raised three sons, and had a teaching career. When I chose to work for a doctoral degree in education, I knew I would need statistics. This time, however, I dealt with it differently. I was not that unsure young girl anymore. I asked for help, joined weekend study groups, and did not let my old fears control me. When the professor asked if I had questions, I smiled and said yes—without feeling shy.
Looking back, I understand the strongest limits were never really mine; they were the echoes (回响) of other people’s doubts that I had let grow inside me. I did not become a medical doctor, but I earned a doctorate in a field I love. I managed to be a mother, a teacher, and a graduate student at the same time. This was not because I was naturally excellent at everything, but because I learned to believe in my own ability to learn and improve.
Now that I am older, I see that every challenge helped form who I am. If I could talk to my younger self, I would kindly tell her to trust her own voice earlier. Yet I regret nothing — every step, even the hard ones, led me to a life full of deep satisfaction and happiness.
24. What caused the author to find learning math challenging?
A. Lack of parental support. B. Poor teaching methods at school.
C. Inability to know any concepts. D. Anxiety and loss of confidence.
25. What does the author intend to express in paragraph 3?
A. Her successful marriage and family life.
B. Her change of attitude and methods.
C. The importance of a supportive professor.
D. The necessity for weekend study periods.
26. What helped the author succeed in many different roles?
A. Natural talent. B. An easier career path.
C. Self-belief in learning. D. Complete independence.
27. What is the author’s attitude towards her past struggles now?
A. Thankful. B. Regretful.
C. Worried. D. Excited.

A 22-minute brisk walk, jog or cycle every day is enough to offset (抵消) the negative health effects of too much sitting down, research showed.
Experts found that people who sit for long periods — such as working in an office or watching TV — are more likely to die earlier, but moderate-to-vigorous (中等的到剧烈的) physical activity (MVPA) eliminates this risk. The study backs up the UK chief medical officers’ recommendation that people aim for 150 minutes of MVPA per week — roughly 21 minutes per day.
Examples of moderate activity include very brisk walking (4 mph or faster), heavy cleaning such as washing windows or mopping, cycling at 10-12 mph, or badminton. Vigorous activities include hiking, jogging at 6 mph or faster, fast cycling, football, basketball or tennis.
UK guidelines say: “For good physical and mental health, adults should aim to be physically active every day. Any activity is better than none, and more is better still.”
In the new study, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, experts examined data (数据) for 11,989 people over 50, with a 50/50 split between male and female, from Norway, Sweden and the US. People in the study wore activity trackers that measured their MVPA. In all, 5,943 people spent fewer than 10.5 hours sitting down every day, while 6,042 spent 10.5 or more hours being sedentary (久坐的). Over a five-year follow-up, 6.7% (805) of the people died. The research showed MVPA for 22 minutes each day offset the negative effects of being sedentary and removed the risk of dying early due to sitting for a long time.
Author Edvard Sagely, from the Arctic University of Norway, said: “In our study, we found that only those people doing more than 12 hours per day sitting had a higher risk of death. We are talking about any sitting behavior — such as being in the office or watching TV for long periods of time.”
28. What does the underlined word “eliminates” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Puts up with B. Gets rid of
C. Makes use of D. Gives up
29. Which of the following activities is considered as vigorous physical activity?
A. Walking at 5 mph. B. Doing housework.
C. Playing badminton. D. Taking part in a cycling race.
30. How is Paragraph 5 developed?
A. By using quotes. B. By giving examples.
C. By listing data. D. By sharing experiences.
31. What is the text mainly about?
A. Ways to choose proper physical activities.
B. Reasons why long-time sitting harms health.
C. Tips for forming a good lifelong exercise habit.
D. Effects of daily exercise on sedentary people.

Even their greatest fans — wildlife scientists — were left in the dark about the population of Northern Saw-whet Owls (猫头鹰) in one state in the middle of their range. Concerned that the Saw-whet population was decreasing and might require protection, scientists tried to get an exact count of the small owls.
The results were shocking, as the researchers discovered that the owls were not endangered at all. Instead, the Saw-whet’s lifestyle — completely nighttime, staying mostly quiet, and living high in the forest away from human populations — allowed them to remain unnoticed. In fact, they were probably the most common small hunters in the forests of that state.
There are around 250 kinds of owls worldwide, and they are quite different in habitat and size. Owls can be found on every continent except Antarctica, living in a wide variety of habitats from Snowy Owls in the Arctic to Desert Owls in the Middle East. The largest owl is the Blakiston’s Fish Owl of eastern Asia, which weighs about 10 pounds. The smallest is the 39.7-gram Elf Owl of the southwestern United States, a bird that would fit comfortably in your hand.
Owls are tough, highly adapted birds with diverse (多样的) diets. Some are specialists, eating only fish, or others only insects. But most are generalists, eating a wide variety of other small animals. And they are huge hunters: a Barn Owl with a family of six babies to feed will catch around 1,000 small animals in a three-month period.
With their secretive nature, owls are difficult to study. In recent years, modern and some not-so-modern technologies are being put to use. Small GPS satellite transmitters (发射机) are now being placed on netted individuals to track their flights. Other researchers have placed hundreds of microphones in remote forest areas to locate owl nests. Others are locating nests by training dogs to smell owl waste. With clearer locations, it would be easier to carry out research and protection for them.
32. What made the research result of Northern Saw-whet Owls surprising?
A. Their small size. B. Their quiet habitat.
C. Their unique lifestyle. D. Their factual population.
33. What does paragraph 3 mainly discuss about owls?
A. The diversity. B. The diets.
C. The weight. D. The names.
34. Why is the Barn Owl mentioned in paragraph 4?
A. To show owls love their kids.
B. To conclude owls live a hard life.
C. To prove owls can be tough hunters.
D. To indicate owls are particular about food.
35. Which section of a magazine may this passage be taken from?
A. Novel ideas. B. Scientific Findings.
C. History Facts. D. Modern Technology.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
We are taught to see “gossip (八卦)” as a bad habit. However, talking about other people is a natural and important part of our life. Long ago, gossip worked like our earliest social media. In the old days, people shared useful news this way, such as who we could trust or where to get nice food. Even now, it helps us make friends and build trust. 36 There is just a small difference between sharing useful news and saying something hurtful. To chat in a good way, we need to follow simple rules and learn “polite gossip”.
First, only talk about facts. We can only speak of words we actually heard and actions we really saw. If you start guessing others’ hidden ideas or invent small details to make the story more fun, you are not talking politely anymore. 37
Second, know what we cannot talk about. 38 Topics like classmates’ looks, family troubles or health problems should never come up in casual talks. If someone is having a hard time, they need our care, not gossip behind their backs.
Third, separate people from their mistakes. People may do silly or careless things, but that does not mean they are bad people. 39 We all make mistakes and have bad moments. When we talk about one thing, we should focus on the action itself instead of speaking badly of a person’s personality.
Finally, keep the golden rule: 40 This is the final test of our conscience (良知). If you and that person change places, will you think this talk is fair? Or will you feel sad? If we keep kind and fair hearts, we can share stories without hurting anyone.
A. However, not all gossip is the same.
B. Therefore, we must respect other people.
C. Real harm requires direct action rather than secret talks.
D. There are some personal things we should never discuss.
E. It is important to listen carefully to what our friends tell us.
F. We should stick to what really happened, not what we imagine.
G. Don’t talk about others in ways you would hate others to talk about you.

“David! David! Wake up! You’ll miss your school today. It’s already 7:35 and class starts at 8:00!” David’s mom said, pulling him out of bed.
“Mom, don’t worry! I will make it,” David said as he jumped up quickly, took his bag and ran to the bus stop.
David had entered a new school so he knew no one there and had made no friends yet.
At school, David could not pay attention to anything and wanted the bell to ring so that he could eat something. After a few hours, when the bell rang, David ran to the shop, but just then he remembered that he had left for school in a hurry in the morning and had forgotten to ask his mom for money. He looked under his books, hoping to find some money but there was none.
Not knowing what to do, he sat on a bench. He saw a few of his classmates there, and George was among them. He was one of the richest kids in his class but he was a very proud boy.
David hesitated (犹豫) for a while, then stood up and walked slowly toward George. “Um... could I borrow some money? I forgot to bring mine this morning,” he asked quietly.
George laughed and said, “Why would I do that?” He laughed so loudly that the other kids around could hear it clearly.
It was too shameful for David. He felt like crying and walked slowly back to an empty bench. That’s when he noticed something lying near it — a wallet.
He picked it up and found it was George’s, as he remembered George showing it off to his friends and saying his uncle had bought it for him from the UK. Inside, there was quite a lot of money.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
