Do you see how the people who work in the fire station put out a fire when the fire breaks out in the forest? Now I’ll tell you something about smokejumpers and let you know more about them.
Smokejumpers are special firemen. They jump from planes into areas that are difficult to reach by car or on foot, like the middle of a mountain forest. They race to put out fires as fast as they can.
At a fire site, smokejumpers first check the lie (地形) of the land and decide how to fight the fire. They try their best to stop a fire from spreading (蔓延). Using their tools, smokejumpers clear burnable things like dry grass on the land. They usually take some water with them.
It’s true that most smokejumpers are men. But more women are joining. The important thing is that your height and weight (身高和体重) must be in a certain range (一定的范围). For example, smokejumpers in the U. S. must be between 55kg and 90kg in weight, so they won’t get hurt when they land, or in the strong winds.
Smokejumpers must also be able to live in the wilderness (野外). In Russia, many smokejumpers know how to find food in the forest and make simple tools. The work is dangerous, and the hours are long. But for smokejumpers, smokejumping isn’t just a job. They love being able to jump out of planes, fighting fires and living in the forest. As 28-year-old Russian smokejumper Alexi Tishin says proudly, “This is the best job for brave people.”

If you are hiking with a friend who is overweight (超重的), you may hear them say that the hills look steeper (更陡) and the distances look farther away than what they really are. Is your friend lazy(懒惰的)? In fact, this is just what the world looks like in their eyes.
Scientists from Colorado State University show that being overweight distorts perception (扭曲知觉).
In one study, scientists asked 66 people of different weights and sizes to say how far away a traffic sign was. In fact, the sign was 25m away. Those who were about 57kg thought it was just 15m from them, but those who were about 146kg saw it as being 30m away.
So far from being crazy, overweight people just see the world differently when thinking about exercise. The heavy weight can feel like a load (重物) to carry.
“If you find yourself out hiking with a heavy bag, hills are going to look steeper, distances are going to look farther, and a space across a river is going to look bigger,” Jessica Witt from Colorado State University told the Guardian.
It’s this idea that if you have to make more of an effort to climb that hill because you are carrying this heavy bag, the hill is going to look more challenging.
“You are not seeing that hill as it is. You are seeing the world through your ability (能力) to act. You have less ability because you are having to carry this bag,” Witt said. Sometimes the steepest hills are in the mind before the feet feel them.
( )61. Why may an overweight hiker see a hill as steeper than it really is?
A. Because they don’t want to exercise.
B. Because they need glasses.
C. Because they’re not good at hiking.
D. Because their body makes challenges look bigger.
( )62. According to the study, we know that ________.
A. overweight people think the traffic sign is farther because they are crazy
B. overweight people is too lazy to do exercise
C. people’s weight had an effect on how far they thought the sign was

B. People see things based on (基于) what they can easily do.
C. Only strong people see things in the right way.
D. Your eyes change when you exercise.
