Life is full of choices and decisions. Here are some steps to help you make wise decisions.
First, it’s better to make a decision quickly than avoid it for a month because you’re afraid of choosing. ____5____ Also, some choices usually have time limits (限制). So to keep our brains from getting too tired, we needn’t think about the cost of every single choice. Narrow down the list and try comparing only the best two or three.
Next, think about the value and cost of each choice. ____6____ Or better yet, create a score card, on which you give out bigger point values to what you think is more important. This way you can tell if one huge advantage is more important than a group of little disadvantages.
Then, stay calm and give yourself some space. You don’t want to delay (延迟) for weeks, but if you’re about to make a hasty (仓促的) decision, you may end up picking something you regret. ____7____ And it might take you a few days for major choices, like choosing your ideal high school.
____8____ Why? Because it’s good to get a fresh way of thinking from others who are not as worried as you. Consider their opinions even if they are not what you want to hear. You need to take different opinions into consideration so that you will make a wise decision.
A. You’ll need at least one night to “sleep on it”.
B. And you don’t have to make a decision alone.
C. They are the best chances to show your personality.
D. To do that, you can make a list of advantages and disadvantages.
E. It’s very tiring to think things over but fail to decide in time.

【导语】本文介绍做出明智决定的几个步骤,告诉我们如何科学、理性地做选择。
【5题详解】
根据前文“First, it’s better to make a decision quickly than avoid it for a month because you’re afraid of choosing.”以及后文“Also, some choices usually have time limits.”可知,此处应填入一句话承接前文观点,说明迟迟不做决定的弊端。选项E“It’s very tiring to think things over but fail to decide in time.”承接首句观点,和后文Also引出的理由逻辑连贯。
【6题详解】
根据本段主题句“Next, think about the value and cost of each choice.”以及后文“Or better yet, create a score card, on which you give out bigger point values to what you think is more important.”可知,此处需要介绍权衡利弊的一种做法。选项D“To do that, you can make a list of advantages and disadvantages.”引出列优缺点清单的方法,和后文制作评分卡是递进关系。
【7题详解】
根据前文“Then, stay calm and give yourself some space. You don’t want to delay for weeks, but if you’re about to make a hasty decision, you may end up picking something you regret.”以及后文“And it might take you a few days for major choices, like choosing your ideal high school.”可知,此处需表达做决定前留出思考时间。选项A“You’ll need at least one night to ‘sleep on it’.”承接上文,说明至少要一晚时间斟酌,和后文重大选择要花几天衔接紧密。
【8题详解】
根据后文“Why? Because it’s good to get a fresh way of thinking from others who are not as worried as you.”可知,此处应填入本段的主题句,引出下文听取他人想法的内容。选项B“And you don’t have to make a decision alone.”引出下文,后文解释听取他人意见的好处,逻辑通顺。
第二节 阅读下面短文,在每小题所给的四个选项中选出最佳选项。(本大题共12小题,每小题2分,共24分)
A
Hard water has higher amounts of Ca2+ and Mg2+, so it’s more difficult to get things clean when you are washing in hard water. We are sharing two ways to check whether you are using hard water at home.
Method 1: Soap Test
Step 1: Choose a clear instead of a covered bottle so that you can notice the changes during the test.
Step 2: Fill half of the bottle with water.
Step 3: Add 10 drops of liquid (液体) soap to the bottle.
Step 4: Cap the bottle and shake it for a few seconds.
Step 5: Open the bottle and check the bubbles (泡沫) at the top of the water.
This method will only give you an idea of whether the water you are using is hard or soft. You won’t be able to know the exact degree of hardness of the water. But the fewer the bubbles you can see, the harder the water is.
Method 2: Hard Water Test Strips (试纸)
Dip the strip into the water sample for 2 seconds and take it out right away.
Hold the strip for 30 seconds.
Compare the test strip color with the color chart on the bottle label.
Although the result is not as dependable as the lab test, the color chart can tell you the water hardness based on the color.
If you now know that the water that you are using is hard, you should consider taking action to change hard water into soft water. The most chosen way is to fix a hard water softener. You can check out the list of our best-selling water softeners for bathrooms and washing machines by clicking here.
9. How does the number of bubbles change with water hardness in the soap test?
(x = the bubbles, y = how hard the water is)
A. B. C. D.
10. What can show you the result when using hard water strips?
A. The color of the water softener. B. The change of the water.
C. The color on the strips. D. The amount of the bubbles.
11. What should you do if you find the water you are using is hard, according to the text?
A. Boil the water before using it. B. Call the water company.
C. Use soap to soften the water. D. Fix a hard water softener.
12. Where may the text be from?
A. A book about science tests. B. A poster for selling hard water test strips.
C. A study about hard water. D. A website for selling water softeners.
【答案】9. B 10. C 11. D 12. D
【解析】

“What’s on your mind, sweetheart?”
I told Dad about the sycamore tree. About the view and the sounds and the colors and the wind, and how being up so high felt like flying. Felt like magic. I looked at him and whispered, “Would you climb up there with me? “He smiled and said,” I’m not much of a climber any more, Julianna, but I’ll give it a shot, sure.”
I went to bed so excited that I don’t think I slept more than five minutes the whole night.
The next morning, I raced to the bus stop extra early and climbed the tree. I caught the sun rising through the clouds, sending stripes of fire from one end of the world to the other.
Then I heard a noise below. I looked down, and parked right below me were two trucks. There were four men standing around talking. and I almost called down to them, “I’m sorry, but you can’t park there... That’s a bus stop!”But before I could, one of the men reached into the back of a truck and started taking out tools. Gloves. Ropes. A chain. And then chain saws (电锯). Three chain saws. Then one of the kids who rides the bus showed up and started talking to them, and pretty soon he was pointing up at me.
One of the men called, “Hey! You’d better come down from there. We gotta take this thing down.”
I held on to the tree tightly, because suddenly it felt as if I might fall. I managed to cry out,“The tree?”
“Yeah, now come down.”
“But who told you to cut it down?”
“The owner!” he called back.
“But why?”
“Because he’s gonna build himself a house, and this tree is in the way. Now come down, girl, we’ve got work to do!”
By that time most of the kids had gathered for the bus. They weren’t saying anything to me, just looking up at me and turning from time to time to talk to each other. My heart was crazy with fear. I couldn’t leave and let them cut down the tree! I cried, “You can’t cut it down! You just can’t!”
One of the men shook his head and said, “I am this close to calling the police. Now are you going to come down or are we going to cut you down?”
The bus was three blocks away. I’d never missed school for any reason other than illness, but I knew in my heart that I was going to miss my ride. “You’re going to have to cut me down!” I yelled. Then I had an idea. They’d never cut it down if all of us were in the tree. “Hey, guys!” I called to my classmates.“Get up here with me! They can’t cut it down if we’re all up here! Marcia! Tony! Bryce! Come on, you guys, don’t let them do this!”
They just stood there, staring up at me.
I could see the bus, one block away. “Come on, you guys! You don’t have to come up this high. Just a little ways. Please!”
The bus arrived. One by one, my classmates climbed on board.

①Imagine you are very hungry. You buy a whole pizza. The first slice tastes amazing. The second is still great. By the third, you start to feel full. The fourth? You might not even want it. This isn’t just about your stomach. It is a key economic(经济的) idea called the law of diminishing marginal utility.
②In economics, “utility” means the satisfaction you get from consuming something. Marginal utility is the extra satisfaction from one more unit. This law says that as you consume more of something, the extra satisfaction from each additional unit drops.
③This law explains many real-life decisions. Why do you stop after three slices of pizza or buy fewer of the same thing over time? Because the joy of more keeps getting smaller.
④Smart companies use this law to their own advantage by selling more at a low cost. That’s why cinemas sell popcorn in small, medium, and large sizes. The large size costs only a little more than the medium, but the extra popcorn gives you very little extra happiness. ▲
⑤Another trick is bundling, selling different products together as a package. For example, a fast-food meal includes a burger, fries, and a drink. You may not really want the fries, but together, they feel satisfying and you think you are paying less for more. By bundling, the restaurant sells you things with lower marginal utility and still makes a profit (盈利)
⑥So whether it’s pizza, popcorn, or a deal that seems too good to turn down, just remember: the first bite is happiness, The rest is economics.
17. Which of the following shows the law of diminishing marginal utility?
A. B. C. D.
18. Which of the following sentences can be put into ▲ ?
A. Interestingly, lots of people prefer the small size popcorn.
B. However, you still buy it because it feels like a good deal.
C. In fact, you might feel quite sick if you eat too much of it.
D. As a result, movie theaters sell less popcorn on weekends.
19. Which of the following ads best shows the use of “bundling” described in ⑤?
A. B.
C. D.
20. What is the main purpose of this passage?
A. To suggest the idea of getting the most happiness with the largest size.
B. To find the best sales methods for businesses by comparing the prices.
C. To explain an economic idea and how businesses make money with it
D. To show why readers should stop themselves from eating much pizza.
【答案】17. A 18. B 19. D 20. C
