21. Parents should have an honest ________ with their children about school life.
A. diary B. dialogue C. dictionary D. danger
根据“Parents should have an honest...with their children about school life.”
22. Stay away from ________ thoughts, and you will feel much better about yourself.
A. negative B. outgoing C. positive D. confident
【答案】A
根据“Stay away from...thoughts, and you will feel much better about yourself.”
23. The two classes ________ with each other to finish the science project, and they won the first prize together.
A. competed B. argued C. chatted D. cooperated
24. —Have you considered ________ the job as a teacher?
—Yes. I like it because a teacher is often considered ________ a gardener.
A. to take; as B. to take; to be C. taking; being D. taking; as
根据“Have you considered...the job as a teacher?”和“Yes. I like it because a teacher is often considered...a gardener.”
25. —Do you have trouble _________ the balance between schoolwork and hobbies?
—Yes. I find _________ really hard for me to cut back on my painting time.
A. keeping; it B. to keep; that C. keeping; that D. to keep; it
【答案】A
第一空考查固定搭配have trouble (in) doing sth.,意为“做某事有困难”,介词in可以省略,后面要跟动名词形式,所以第一空用keeping;第二空考查固定结构find it +形容词+for sb. to do sth.,意为“发现做某事对某人来说是……的”,这里it是形式宾语,真正的宾语是后面的不定式短语,不能用that作形式宾语,所以第二空用it。应填keeping;it。
26. All Kitty’s hard work ________ when she won the first prize in the writing competition.
A. paid off B. took off C. put off D. got off
【答案】A
paid off 得到回报;took off 起飞,脱下;put off 推迟;got off 下车。根据“won the first prize”可知,Kitty的努力最终有了好的结果,即“得到了回报”,应填paid off。
27. The young gymnast didn't realize the importance of teamwork ________ she experienced a painful failure in the final.
A. until B. while C. although D. because
【答案】A
才”);while当…… 根据“didn’t realize”与“she experienced”的关系,表示“直到失败才意识到”,应用not...until...结构。故选用until。
28. —________ hard the task seemed, she never thought about quitting.
—That’s why she is such a great role model for young athletes.
A. Whatever B. Whenever C. Wherever D. However
29. —The book The Little Prince is fantastic.
—So it is. Could you tell me ________?
A. how long I can borrow it B. that I can borrow it
C. when should I return it D. if I can keep it for another three days
30. —I don’t know how to get on well with my new classmates.
—________ Why not join in some after-class activities with them?

I don’t agree我不同意;Don’t worry别担心;I’m afraid not恐怕不行;Of course not当然不。前者表达“I don’t know how to get on well...”,自己不知道如何和新同学相处的困扰,后者“Why not join in some...”

After crossing the river, Dorothy and her friends came to a flower field, with many other colourful flowers next to it.
“How beautiful!” Dorothy said.
“When I have brains, I will probably like them better.” the Scarecrow said.
“If I had a heart, I would love them.” added the Tin Woodman.
“I always liked flowers.” the Lion said. “But there are none in the forest so bright as these.”
Soon they found themselves in the middle of the poppies. It is known that when there are many of these flowers together, their strong smell will make anyone breathing it fall asleep, even sleep forever. But Dorothy didn’t know this. Soon Dorothy’s eyes grew so heavy that she felt she had to sleep. Dorothy fell among the poppies, fast asleep.
“The smell is killing us all. If we leave her here, she will die.” said the Lion. “I can hardly keep my eyes open, and the dog Toto is asleep already.”
“Run fast and get out of here.” said the Scarecrow to the Lion, “We can carry the little girl, but you are too heavy.”
The Lion ran as fast as possible but he fell asleep before he was out of the field. Luckily, the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman were not troubled by the smell. They made a chair with their hands and carried Dorothy through the flowers to the grass far enough from the poppy field.
The Tin Woodman built a truck and pulled the Lion with the Scarecrow. The sweet fresh air woke Dorothy, Toto and the Lion. Soon they continued their journey.

Last night one of my Chinese friends took me to a concert of Chinese folk music. The piece which was played on the erhu especially moved me. The music was strangely beautiful, but under the beauty I sensed a strong sadness and pain. The piece had a simple name, Erquan Yingyue (Moon Reflected on Second Spring), but it was one of the most moving pieces of music that I’ve ever heard. The erhu sounded so sad that I almost cried along with it as I listened. Later I looked up the history of Erquan Yingyue, and I began to understand the sadness in the music.
The music was written by Abing, a folk musician who was born in the city of Wuxi in 1893. His mother died when he was very young. Abing’s father taught him to play many musical instruments, such as the drums, dizi and erhu, and by age 17, Abing was known for his musical ability. However, after his father died, Abing’s life grew worse. He was very poor. Not only that, he developed a serious illness and became blind. For several years, he had no home. He lived on the streets and played music to make money. Even after Abing got married and had a home again, he continued to sing and play on the streets. He performed in this way for many years.
Abing’s amazing musical skills made him very popular during his lifetime. By the end of his life, he could play over 600 pieces of music. Many of these were written by Abing himself. It is a pity that only six pieces of music in total were recorded for the future world to hear, but his popularity continues to this day. Today, Abing’s Erquan Yingyue is a piece which all the great erhu masters play and praise. It has become one of China’s national treasures. It not only paints a picture of Abing’s own life but also reminds people of their own sad or painful experiences.

What’s more, he was always ready to give back to society. He set up a public fund to support young music lovers who were in need. He believed that music could bring people courage and hope, especially during hard times.
