When Susan Greenstein Prescott was a high school senior, her English teacher, Fred DiMeo, gave her a terrible task: Recite (背诵) a poem in front of the whole class. “I had a mild stutter (口吃). I’d be trying to get a word out that might begin with ‘D’ or a ‘TH’ and the word wouldn’t come out, or I might say ‘the’ three times,” Greenstein Prescott said.
The thought of getting up in front of her classmates and stuttering through the poem was too much to bear. Greenstein Prescott went home and told how frightened she was to her mom, who agreed to write a note asking for her to be excused from doing the task in front of the whole class.
When the day of the recitation came, Greenstein Prescott recited the poem one-on-one to DiMeo. Once she was done, he said something she’d never heard before: that he liked listening to her voice. For the first time, she considered the possibility that public speaking didn’t have to be a source of fright. “I think in his mind it was so minor and he wanted me to understand I have nothing to be afraid of,” she said.
Greenstein Prescott went on to graduate from high school and go to college. She never got to properly thank DiMeo. But sometime after college, she landed a job as a corporate trainer (企业培训师). The new position made her realize how big an influence he had had on her confidence. “I stand up in front of people and I speak. And I do it all the time, and if I do stutter once in a while, big whoop,” she said.
Greenstein Prescott recently found a way to contact her former teacher, and planned on sending him a letter expressing her thanks.
“He truly is an unsung (未被颂扬的) hero because he played a big role in my very successful career and my life,” she said. “I don’t know where I would’ve gone if I felt like I had to keep my voice quiet because I was afraid of embarrassing myself. I’d like to give him my thanks for that kindness.”
24. Why did Greenstein Prescott’s mother agree to write a note?
A. To request a different poem for her.
B. To have her not do the class task.
C. To ask Mr. DiMeo for extra practice time.
D. To express her thanks to the teacher.
25. What can be inferred about Mr. DiMeo from paragraph 3?
A. He was strict with nervous students.
B. He disliked teaching public speaking.
C. He often praised students’ written work.
D. He was good at building students’ confidence.
26. Why does Greenstein Prescott mention her job as a corporate trainer?
A. To show her teacher’s lasting influence on her.
B. To prove she was a successful college graduate.
C. To share her experience of finding a job.
D. To explain why she still stutters sometimes.
27. What can be the best title for the text?
A. A Terrible School Task B. How I Beat Stuttering
C. My Unsung Hero D. The Fear of Public Speaking

A new study carried out among adolescents (青少年) in a high school theater program showed how to use positive emotions to drive their work. Students also used strategies to manage their own and others’ bad emotions. The research was carried out through interviews with the students during a three-month theater program. This study showed how schools and programs can support the development of “emotional intelligence” in adolescents.
Researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign started open-ended interviews to get an in-depth understanding of one setting — a high school theater program. Ten teenagers were interviewed every two weeks over a three-month period while the theater group prepared a musical (音乐剧). Two adults who guided the production were also interviewed every two weeks. What’s more, the researchers observed the rehearsals (排练) weekly.
During the rehearsals, teenagers reported emotional experiences, including sadness, anger, anxiety, and excitement. The program provided a culture that helped them learn to deal well with the events and feelings connected to these different emotions, the researchers found. The adults led by example, helping the teens develop strategies to manage strong emotions.
The theater setting supported this process by putting the youth in situations in which emotions were likely to happen because the expectation of hard work created stress. Also, strong emotions were accepted and discussed openly with a culture of caring about others.
“The development of ‘emotional intelligence’ is important to adult work and family life, but many young people arrive in adulthood with incomplete emotional skills,” according to Reed W. Larson, the study’s lead author. “Our research findings suggest how, under the right conditions, adolescents learn these skills. Although further research is needed, youth programs, such as the theater program, along with schools that provide these conditions may lead to better emotional learning.”
28. What did the new study find?
A. Theater programs are rare in high schools.
B. Theater programs help teenagers grow emotionally.
C. Emotional skills guarantee academic success.
D. Teenagers should spend more time on musicals.
29. How did the researchers collect information?
A. By testing the students’ grades. B. By handing out questionnaires to parents.
C. By recording the musical performances. D. By interviewing students and teachers.
30. What can we learn about the adults in the theater program?
A. They set an example in handling emotions.
B. They avoided discussing strong feelings.
C. They pushed the teenagers to act perfectly.
D. They left the teenagers alone during rehearsals.
31. What is Reed W. Larson’s attitude toward youth programs like the theater program?
A. Doubtful. B. Indifferent. C. Supportive. D. Worried.
D
The demand for renewable energy sources often leads scientists to re-think the most common natural phenomena. Rain, a seemingly simple part of the water cycle, carries a surprising amount of energy. Chinese scientists have recently developed a floating generator that changes the energy of falling raindrops directly into electricity.
Designed at the Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (NUAA), the water-integrated droplet electricity generator (W-DEG) is a device that uses water as a structural and electrical part. Traditional droplet electricity generators depend on a hard base and a metal bottom electric part. They produce electricity when raindrops hit a non-conductive film, creating charges on contact. However, even though these devices can produce strong electric power, their designs are heavy, expensive, and limited by the use of heavy building materials.
In contrast, the new device floats directly on a body of water, with the water itself serving as both the base and the electric part. This design cuts material weight by about 80 percent and reduces costs by nearly half compared with traditional systems. Besides, it can produce about 250 volts of electricity from each raindrop, working as well as traditional devices.
The new device also stands out for its strong performance. Lab tests showed the W-DEG worked normally under different temperatures, salt levels, and even in lake water. To stop water from gathering and blocking power production, researchers added drainage holes that let water flow down but not up. These holes keep the surface open for raindrops to hit. This self-managing system makes sure the W-DEG works well even in heavy rain. The W-DEG can also fill power storage units in just a few minutes.
With further development, people can place it on lakes or coasts to get clean power without using land. It can also help environmental checking systems watch water quality, salt levels and pollution. In rainy areas, it can work as a power source for local power networks or supply power for areas far from main power systems.
32. What have the scientists from the NUAA designed?
A. An energy storage structure. B. A raindrop-collecting device.
C. An electricity-producing tool. D. A rainfall monitoring system.
33. How does the author develop the ideas in paragraphs 2 and 3?
A. By giving examples. B. By comparing differences.
C. By analyzing causes and effects. D. By describing working processes.
34. What can we learn about the W-DEG?
A. It reacts quickly to temperature changes. B. It functions best in lake water.
C. It is efficient and water-saving. D. It is lightweight and low-cost.
35. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The W-DEG’s disadvantages. B. The W-DEG’s operating guide.
C. The W-DEG’s marketing plans. D. The W-DEG’s future applications.

The Power of a Personal Journal
Keeping a daily journal is one of the most powerful and beneficial habits you can develop. It is more than just a record of your life; it is a tool for self-expression, reflection, and personal growth. 36 For many successful writers and thinkers, it’s their first step into daily writing discipline.
A key benefit of keeping a journal is better self-understanding. Writing down your thoughts and feelings forces you to clarify them. 37 This process gives you new insights into your values and life goals, creating a space for honest self-conversation.
38 The more you write, the better you express ideas clearly. You can experiment with new vocabulary, different sentence structures, and various writing styles without the pressure of being graded. It’s a private playground for your words.
To get started, you don’t need a fancy notebook or special pens. 39 Consistency matters most — spend 10-15 minutes daily. You can write about your day, things you’re grateful for, or challenges you face. You can also focus on daily observations like the weather.
The benefits of this simple practice extend far beyond the page. It can reduce stress, spark creativity, and help you solve problems more effectively. 40 You might be surprised by what you discover.
A. So, pick up a pen and start writing.
B. Keeping a journal also improves writing skills.
C. You can also share your journals with your friends for feedback.
D. Putting experiences into words can make them easier to understand.
E. It is important to write your journal entry at the same time every day.
F. It allows you to look within, to recall the past, and to plan for the future.
G. A simple notebook or even a document on your computer will work perfectly.
