Three months later, the father returned to pick up his son as promised. The coach set up a friendly match between the boy and an experienced boxer to show the training results. As soon as the match began, the boy was knocked down hard. But to everyone’s surprise, he quickly got up and faced his opponent (对手) again. He was knocked down again right away, but immediately jumped back to his feet. This happened again and again. The boy was knocked down 16 times, yet each time he stood up, ready to face the challenge.

Du Mengran is a Chinese deep sea scientist. Though she looks like a girl next door, her work is amazing. Du has worked at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (中国科学院) for twelve years. During this time, she has dived (下潜) more than 30 times in China’s deep sea submersibles (潜水器) like Fendouzhe. In May this year, she received the China Youth May Fourth Medal for her amazing discoveries in the deep sea. This medal is China’s top honor for young people.
In 2024, she led a team to the Kuril-Kamchatka Trench (千岛-堪察加海沟), which is over 9,000 meters deep. At 9,533 meters, the team saw something wonderful. The dark seabed was covered with some unusual animals. These deep sea animals survive without sunlight, getting energy from chemicals. This discovery was very important. It offered new ideas about how life evolved (演化) on Earth.
After this success, in 2025, she went to the Puysegur Trench (皮斯格海沟) to explore more. The storms there are very strong, with waves as tall as two-story houses. But Du was brave and did not give up. She waited for the quiet times between the storms and kept diving (下潜). “When the pilot asked me why I didn’t back down,” Du wrote in her diary, “I said: the deep sea never turns away a visitor. It is just waiting for eyes curious enough to see.”
Du has many plans for the future. One is to explore the ocean under the polar (极地的) ice. Whatever challenges lie ahead, she said she would meet them with the belief she has carried for years: “I enjoy living with nature, and it always teaches me something new.”

①Sitting through a family dinner, your uncle suddenly starts talking about different topics like an expert. But everything he knows is from the internet. After exams, one classmate is sure to do well. But he ends up with far lower marks than expected. Sounds familiar? This kind of behavior is called the Dunning-Kruger effect.
②In 1999, two psychologists (心理学家) David Dunning and Justin Kruger did some experiments. They asked people to tell how well they did in certain tasks. The results showed people with poor skills often thought they did much better than they actually did. They failed to see their own weakness, which made them too confident.
③Later, people used a graph (图表) to show this effect. It clearly tells us the connection between our actual knowledge and our self-confidence. When we know little about something, our confidence rises to quite a high point. We may even believe we know everything. Digging deeper, we begin to realize how difficult the topic truly is, and our confidence drops. At this point, we start questioning ourselves. Only when we keep learning can our ability and confidence rise in a healthy way.
④This is not just a phenomenon (现象)—it is a mistake that everyone may easily fall into. Have you ever laughed at your classmates’ mistakes without realizing your own? Have you ever turned a deaf ear to others’ advice because you thought you knew better? ... If so, you are having it too.
⑤Dear graduates of 2027, as you are stepping into senior high and then a wider world, remember that real growth lies in the courage to be modest (谦虚). Always remember to learn, feel, and listen, and you will surely shine brighter in the years ahead.
13. Which sentence might be said by the uncle in Paragraph ①?
A. “This accident has many causes. I may not know the truth.”
B. “I’m not sure. You’d better go and ask a teacher about this.”
C. “This war would end fast as long as they just listened to me.”
D. “Oranges are good for the stomach? Let’s check more articles.”
14. What do the experiments by Dunning and Kruger show?
A. Confidence can make people achieve success.
B. Most people can see their weakness more or less.
C. A person can tell how well he or she finishes a task.
D. Less skilled people often think highly of themselves.
15. Who is most likely to be at Point D in the graph?
A. A student who fails an important exam and deeply doubts himself.
B. A math teacher who feels very lost in the beginning of his teaching.
C. A person who feels quite confident after taking the first driving lesson.
D. An experienced doctor who carries on studying for many years at work.
16. Which of the following can be put in the third box of the structure?
A. Listing more results. B. Connecting with readers.
C. Sharing scientific facts. D. Discussing different ideas.
C 14. D 15. D 16. B

根据文章第①段“Sitting through a family dinner, your uncle suddenly starts talking about different topics like an expert. But everything he knows is from the internet.”
根据文章第②段“The results showed people with poor skills often thought they did much better than they actually did.”
根据文章第③段“Only when we keep learning can our ability and confidence rise in a healthy way”以及图表中D点对应的状态(实际知识储备充足,自信处于稳步回升的较高水平,标注为“I think I know it!”)
根据文章第④段“Have you ever laughed at your classmates’ mistakes without realizing your own? Have you ever turned a deaf ear to others’ advice because you thought you knew better? ... If so, you are having it too.”

根据“from floods”和固定搭配“protect...from...”(保护……
根据后文“One day, Bai Gui went to the dikes as usual. He found a small ant hole on the dike.”

根据后文“Our fields and homes may be lost, and even lives may be taken.”

WHAT PEOPLE DO ON LABOR DAY
May 11th, 2026 丨 Weng Lei
To celebrate Labor Day, a photo show was held in a community this month. It started on April 28th and ended on May 3rd.
All the photos on show were about common workers in the community. Behind each photo there was a happy worker doing his or her daily job. A cake maker was laughing, with flour (面粉) all over his hands. A postman was handing a letter to an old man. He was smiling warmly and the old man was very happy. A driver was helping an elderly lady get off the bus—warm smiles were on their faces.
The photos were taken by Chen Hang, a young man who lived in the community for five years. He spent nearly a month walking around the neighborhood with a camera. His idea was simple—to record the smiles of common workers. He “collected” 100 smiling faces. The photos greatly touched him and he decided to share the touching moments in the photos with more people. So he went to the community center for help. The volunteers there organized his photos and turned them into a show for the LaborDay celebrations.
The show drew people in the community, including the “models,” to stop and watch. They were excited to recognize the familiar faces in the photos. They felt happy with the photo show and thankful to Chen Hang. “Without these photos, we may not know how beautiful we are at work,” one of the “models” said.

A father was very worried about his son, who, at 15 or 16 years old, seemed to show no signs of courage. So, the father went to see a famous boxing coach and asked him to help his son. The coach agreed and said, “Leave your son with me. In three months, I promise he will be a changed person. However, you must not visit him during this time.” The father agreed.
The coach turned to the father and asked, “Do you think your son’s performance shows courage?” The father, feeling unhappy, replied, “I’m so disappointed. I never expected that after sending him here for three months of training, he would still get knocked down so easily.”
The coach shook his head and said, “I really feel sorry for you. You’re missing the point. You only see the falls, the seeming winning or losing. Don’t you see courage and toughness (坚韧) of your son to get up each time? That’s true strength. A strong person isn’t someone who never falls, but someone who rises every time they do.
