Eight-year-old Tim spent most of his free time watching TV or playing video games. He became quieter and less self-confident. His father, Mr Green, noticed this--Tim hardly smiled and looked unhappy when he had to stop playing. One sunny morning, Mr Green said, “Let’s try something new!” Tim frowned (皱眉). “Do I have to?” he asked, holding his controller tightly. But his father gave him a cap and opened the door. “Just half an hour outside,” he said.
Tim went out slowly, sighing (叹息). The sun was bright, and the air felt different. He kicked a stone, still unhappy.
Their first run was arduous. Tim could only jog for five minutes before getting breathless. “Don’t give up, and we’ll go a little farther each day,” Mr Green encouraged. They ran through spring rain and summer heat, past golden autumn leaves and winter’s first snow. Tim’s small legs grew stronger as his father patiently matched his pace.
By the third month, something changed. Tim began waking up early, eager (渴望) to pick new running routes. They explored parks, crossed bridges, and discovered hidden paths in their neighborhood. Along the way, they talked about school, friends, and silly jokes that made them laugh while running. After a year, Tim could easily run three kilometers. But the real change was shown in his bright smile and straight posture (身姿). At the school sports day, Tim surprised everyone by winning the 800-meter race.
Running brought him more than physical health. Those 30 daily minutes became their special bonding (情感维系) time. They shared thoughts and created memories that no video game could match.

Two Chinese Mathematicians Make History
Known as “the Nobel Prize of mathematics”, the Fields Medal is the world’s top prize for mathematics. It is presented every four years by the International Mathematical Union, and only scientists under 40 can receive it. Winners get both a gold medal and some money for their important new discoveries in math.
In 2026, two Chinese mathematicians, Deng Yu and Wang Hong, made history by winning this prize. It was the first time mainland Chinese mathematicians had received the award. Both finished their college studies at Peking University and then went abroad for further research.
Deng Yu showed great math talent at a young age. He won a gold medal in the International Mathematical Olympiad in high school and made important progress on a well-known math-physics problem. Thirty-five-year-old Wang Hong is the youngest winner. She entered Peking University at 16 and solved a century-old difficult math problem. She said her success depended much on teamwork.

Have you ever imagined being the main character in a hero story? It can do more than just make you feel excited.
The idea of the hero’s journey became well-known from Joseph Campbell’s book The Hero with a Thousand Faces. It is a common story theme. Heroes such as Mulan and Harry Potter start life-changing trips, face great difficulties, and finally become better people after their experiences.
Some studies show that thinking of your own life as a hero’s journey can help you feel less stressed and more confident. Researcher Benjamin A. Rogers says, “How you tell your own life story influences how meaningful your life feels.” Rogers thinks your favorite hero stories help you think about your own future. They make you believe new chances are waiting for you.
How can you see your life as a hero’s journey? First, think about yourself again. Who is your favorite hero? What parts of him or her are similar to you? Write down your answers. This helps you think of yourself in a more positive way. Second, change your opinion of troubles. A hard time can be your chance to be the hero of your own story. Third, try new small things in daily life. For example, you can take a new road on your way to school.
Every hero starts with one small step. What will you do next? Start today and write your own life story.
33. According to Joseph Campbell, what is a hero’s journey?
A. A trip that includes finding hidden treasures and magical objects.
B. A journey where a hero wins popularity and money by beating enemies.
C. A story where a hero solves problems and grows to be a better self.
D. A journey where a hero experiences difficulties but remains unchanged.
34. Which paragraph discusses the importance of a hero’s journey?
A. Paragraph 1. B. Paragraph 2. C. Paragraph 3. D. Paragraph 4.
35. Why does the writer use words from Benjamin A. Rogers in the passage?
A. To show that heroes always need a guide to succeed.
B. To explain how heroes can solve every problem easily.
C. To show that following a hero’s journey can help you avoid stress.
D. To explain why seeing life as a hero’s journey can improve life satisfaction.
36. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Steps to Solve Difficulties in Life
B. Famous Heroes and Their Stories
C. How to Become a Hero in Real Life
D. The Hero’s Journey: Becoming the Hero of Your Own Story

In a small village called Kangtou in Shandong, a special library named “Siyuan Library” has recently caught people’s eyes. It was set up by Zhou Qinggui, who was awarded in the National Conference on Reading (全民阅读大会) in 2026. Here are some notes from a reporter who interviewed Zhou Qinggui, Zhou’s father and a volunteer.
Born in a poor family, I was able to continue my education with the help of my family and villagers. In 2019, when I returned to my hometown, I found there was no place for children to read, and many of them spent too much time on entertainment (娱乐). Without college student models to follow, they never dreamed big. I felt heartbroken. My hometown shaped me, and I wanted to do something in return. Building a library to improve the cultural climate could be a right step forward.
—Zhou Qinggui
I fully supported his idea of building the library. Though some neighbors didn’t understand in the beginning, we never gave up. Now, as a librarian, seeing children reading here, I feel proud.
—Zhou Chenglin, Zhou’s father
In 2021, Zhou and his six childhood friends raised over 80,000 yuan to turn his old house into a library. I saw its growth supported by many people. In the last five years, it has collected more than 20,000 books from volunteers, and Zhou’s university alumni (校友) have also been invited to give talks here.
—Hu Feipeng, a volunteer
Siyuan Library has changed the village a lot. As village children pick up good study habits and confidence, their parents also join them in reading in the library. In 2024, 14 local students entered college; in 2025, this number rose to 34. Zhao Xiaoya is one of them, who once often read and studied in Siyuan Library and finally went to university.

D. A journey where a hero experiences difficulties but remains unchanged.
34. Which paragraph discusses the importance of a hero’s journey?
A. Paragraph 1. B. Paragraph 2. C. Paragraph 3. D. Paragraph 4.

A. To show that heroes always need a guide to succeed.
B. To explain how heroes can solve every problem easily.
C. To show that following a hero’s journey can help you avoid stress.
D. To explain why seeing life as a hero’s journey can improve life satisfaction.

Have you ever wondered how blind people read? Thanks to a system invented by Louis Braille, blind people can learn to use their fingers to read.
In 1809, Braille was born in a small town in France. ____37____ Later, his other eye was infected, resulting in complete blindness. His blindness inspired him to become an inventor who made contributions to all blind people.
When Braille was ten years old, his parents sent him to a special school for blind students. Braille learned how to read at this school. He was first taught to read by feeling raised letters on paper. ____38____ Too many letters felt the same, for they had similar shapes.
Then, in 1821, Braille heard about a night-reading code system. It was a 12-dot (12凸点) system that was created for night-time communication between soldiers. However, this system didn’t allow the fingertip to cover a whole letter. The readers had to move their fingers to feel the letters. ____39____
Three years later, Braille developed a shorter and simpler touch system based on the night-reading code system. He used six raised dots with different combinations (组合) to stand for each letter. ____40____ Blind people could read much faster and more easily.
Braille died in 1852, but his touch system lives on. Now people call this touch system Braille in honor of Louis Braille.
