If you have visited Yangshuo in Guilin, you must have seen the Lijiang River. But you may not know that this river wasn’t always as clean as it is today.
Ten years ago, the river was heavily polluted. Hotels and restaurants along the banks poured waste water directly into the river. Tourist boats left oil and rubbish behind. The number of fish dropped sharply, and local people stopped swimming in the river.
In 2016, the local government started a clean-up project. Hotels and restaurants were required to install wastewater treatment systems. Tourist boats were replaced with electric ones that produce no pollution. Along the riverbank, trees were planted and walking paths were built.
The results have been encouraging. By 2024, the water quality of the Lijiang River reached Grade Ⅱ—the second highest level. Fish have returned in large numbers, and locals swim in the river again.
“Twenty years ago, the river was beautiful and clean,”said Mr. Chen, a 55-year-old boatman who has worked on the river for more than thirty years. “Then it got dirty. But now it’s coming back. I’m really happy about that.”

When I was very young, people in our village lived by planting fruit trees. My grandmother always took me to the orchard (果园) on the hill. At that time, they had to carry water from the river at the foot of the hill to halfway up the hill. Even though they worked so hard, the production of fruit was still low because the area was short of water.
One day, two young men led a group of workers to our village. They learned about our difficulties, and later, a canal (灌溉渠) began to be built in my village.“Who are they?” I asked.“They are good men from our government,” Grandma replied.
Then, I moved to a city for my middle school. During one summer holiday, I came back to my hometown with my parents. When we arrived there, we were astonished because everything had changed. We saw the canal running through every orchard. And my grandma told us that after the canal was completed, villagers didn't have to go up and down the hill to carry water anymore.
It takes some time to do sth.

结合后文“The village has become a model for rural development”用现在完成时,此处强调到当前时间点收入增长的结果,用现在完成时has increased,符合语境。

Poems from the Tang and Song Dynasties, operas from the Yuan Dynasty, and novels from the Ming and Qing Dynasties are very famous in China’s history. Today, I’d like to recommend Song of Autumn, one of the poems by Liu Yuxi (772—842), a famous poet and writer in the mid-Tang Dynasty.
Just as shown in the first line of the poem, most ancient poets liked to describe autumn as a sad time, but in this poem the season appears differently. In Liu’s eyes, autumn, full of life and hope, is even better than spring morning. He describes the bright scene of a crane (鹤) riding the clouds and flying into the blue sky.
His poems pay special attention to expressing personal feelings, as well as the daily life of common people. Though being translated thoughtfully by experienced translator Xu Yuanchong, the poem still reads not so beautifully as that in Chinese. I personally think that English is sometimes not so powerful as Chinese.
Here is another example. In Liu’s essay A Eulogy on the Humble Dwelling (《陋室铭》), with less than 100 words, he shows a lively picture of his humble cell. However, it also shows how he was pleased with the poor and simple life. People may find it strange that one can feel happy living in such a humble cell. Learning from his famous sentence, “This is a humble dwelling, yet it boasts a fine reputation thanks to my virtuous character (斯是陋室,惟吾德馨)”, I think to be a respectable (值得尊敬的) man is more important than to live in big houses, to wear beautiful clothes, to enjoy delicious food, and even to get knowledge.

Dear Tom,
How is everything going? You asked me about the changes in China in your last letter. I’m happy to share some with you.
I live in a small city, and great changes have taken place here in the past few years. The roads used to be narrow and bumpy, but now they are wide and smooth. A new railway station was built last year, so traveling has become much faster and easier. People also pay more attention to the environment now. The river near my home was once dirty and smelly, but now it is clean.
These changes have made our lives more convenient and comfortable. I feel very proud of my hometown. I believe it will become even better in the future.

Chen-Ning Yang, a world-famous physicist and Nobel laureate (获奖者), passed away on 18 October 2025, at the age of 103.
Yang was born in 1922 and moved to Beijing with his family in 1929. He began his university studies in 1938 and received his Master of Science degree from Tsinghua University in 1944. In 1945, he went to the US for further study. After earning his PhD, he continued his physics research and achieved great success.
Yang is still considered one of the greatest physicists of the 20th century. Together with Tsung-Dao Lee, Yang was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1957. In 1971, Yang made his way back to China. His return encouraged many overseas scientists to do the same, building a bridge for academic exchanges between China and the US. Moreover, he offered advice and had a great influence on China’s scientific projects.
Yang also attached importance to training young people. In 1999, he began teaching at Tsinghua University. At the age of 82, Yang still taught four classes a week. Besides teaching, he also donated his money to support nearly 100 Chinese scientists. These scientists later played important roles in China’s scientific and technological development. Yang said,“My main goal here is to help Tsinghua University train young people and to guide them to follow the right path in study and research. It is a goal worth achieving.”
