Marie Curie, one of the greatest scientists in history, was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1867. When she was young, her family went through hard times: her mother died when she was 10, and her father lost his job soon after. Though life was difficult, she fell in love with science and kept studying hard. At that time, women in Poland were not allowed to go to university, so she worked for years to save money and finally moved to Paris for further study at the age of 24.
In Paris, Marie met Pierre Curie, a talented French scientist. They got married and worked together on the study of radioactivity (放射现象). In 1898, the couple discovered two new elements (元素). One was named polonium (钋), after Marie’s home country Poland. The other was radium (镭), and it had much stronger radioactivity than any known material at that time. They worked in a small, cold shed (棚屋) for years, and finally achieved their amazing discoveries.
In 1903, Marie and Pierre Curie, together with scientist Henri Becquerel, won the Nobel Prize in Physics. Marie became the first woman in the world to receive this great honor. Unluckily, Pierre lost his life in a traffic accident in 1906. Marie was deeply sad, but she didn’t give up her research. In 1911, she won a second Nobel Prize in Chemistry, making her the only person to win Nobel Prizes in two different scientific fields.
