Unit 5 Fun Clubs
Section A 1a–1d
I. Teaching Aims
1. Students can learn the new words about school clubs: art club, science club, drama club, music club, chess club and ping-pong club.
2. Students can match the pictures in 1a with the clubs and say the name of each club.
3. Students can listen for the club that each student wants to join, and finish 1b and 1c with "can" or "can't".
4. Students can use "I want to join…", "Can you…?" and "Yes, I can. / No, I can't." to talk about how they choose a school club.
II. Key and Difficult Points
Key points: the club words and the key sentences "What club do you want to join?" "I want to join…" "Can you…?" "Yes, I can. / No, I can't."
Difficult points: using "can" and "can't" correctly in questions and short answers; catching the right club name when listening in 1b.
III. Teaching Tools
the textbook, the blackboard and coloured chalk, a recording player or a computer, the pictures of 1a (or word cards), the worksheets of 1b and 1c, a dictionary.
IV. Teaching Procedures
Step 1: Lead-in (3 mins)
1. Teacher shows the picture of the unit (students playing with robots) and asks "What are they doing?" to bring in the word "club".
2. Ss say the clubs they know and guess what clubs there are in the picture.
[Purpose] To lead in the topic and get Ss ready to talk about school clubs.
Step 2: Pre-listening (1a, 5 mins)
1. Ss look at the six pictures in 1a and match them with the clubs: art club, science club, drama club, music club, chess club and ping-pong club.
2. Teacher reads out the club words and Ss read after her. Then check the answers together.
[Purpose] To learn the new club words and remove the words that may stop Ss in listening.
Step 3: While-listening (1b, 8 mins)
1. Teacher plays the recording of the three conversations for the first time. Ss listen and write down which club each student wants to join: Teng Fei, Sam and Lin Hua.
2. Play it again if needed, then Ss check their answers with a partner and with the whole class.
[Purpose] To train Ss to listen for the key information (the club name) in a short conversation.
Step 4: While-listening (1c, 7 mins)
1. Ss listen again and complete the sentences with "can" or "can't".
2. Check the answers: Teng Fei can play ping-pong. Sam can play Chinese chess. Lin Hua can read with feeling.
[Purpose] To help Ss understand how to talk about abilities with "can / can't" in a real listening task.
Step 5: Post-listening (1d, 12 mins)
1. Teacher writes the model on the blackboard: "Hello! I want to join…" "Great! Can you…?" "Yes, I can. / No, I can't."
2. Ss practise in pairs, one being the club leader and the other a student. Then some pairs act out their talks in front of the class.
[Purpose] To let Ss use the target language to talk about choosing a club, moving from input to output.
Step 6: Summary and Homework (5 mins)
1. Teacher and Ss go over the club words and the key sentences together.
2. Homework: read 1a and 1b aloud, and write three sentences about the club you want to join and why.
[Purpose] To sum up what we learnt today and consolidate the words and the sentences after class.
V. Blackboard Design
Club words: art club / science club / drama club / music club / chess club / ping-pong club
Key sentences:
— What club do you want to join? — I want to join the … club.
— Can you …? — Yes, I can. / No, I can't.
can (ability) — can't (no ability)
