Mark’s class planted fruits and vegetables in the school’s garden. Mark liked watering them and he especially liked watching the plants grow best. One morning, Mark stopped to check the garden. He saw something surprising. He hurried into his classroom. “Mr. James!” he shouted to his teacher worriedly, “The cabbage is covered with a kind of insect! I think they’re eating it! Please do something to save our plants!” Mr. James just smiled. He showed Mark a small box, “Don’t worry, Mark. I think I know what caused the problem. There’s something in this box that might help.”
Mr. James led his class out to the garden. “Insects (昆虫) called aphids (蚜虫) are eating our cabbage,” he said. “We can use what we know about food chains (链) to work out the problem.” Mr. James said and then carefully opened the small box, and another kind of insect—ladybugs (瓢虫) flew out! “Ladybugs?” asked Mark, “How can they help?”
Mr. James smiled again. He pointed to the cabbage and said, “Cabbage is a producer, and aphids are customers that are eating the cabbage. Ladybugs are customers, too. But they like to eat aphids. Let’s just wait and see what will happen over the next few days.”
For the next week, Mark watched as the aphids died off day by day. One morning he came to the garden to study the cabbage. He saw that it looked healthy and strong. There were no more aphids on it, either! What Mr. James did really worked!

①Birthdays can sometimes be expensive. People often spend money not just on gifts, but also on food and drinks. So many people have started giving second-hand gifts. But is it a good choice? Let’s look at both sides.
②One reason people choose second-hand gifts is for the environment. Many of us have old toys, books or games that we no longer use. If we throw them away, they end up in landfills (垃圾堆). In these landfills, things can take years to break down and harmful gases are produced. Giving away old things instead of throwing them away can reduce waste and protect the environment. Second-hand gifts are also often cheaper than new ones. What’s more, reusing things reduces the need to produce more products, which also reduces pollution.
③On the other hand, new gifts have advantages. When you give a new gift, you know it’s in perfect condition, and it feels special because it’s new. People also like receiving something that shows you’ve thought about them, and sometimes, a second-hand gift might not feel as thoughtful. You may worry that the gift will wear out soon, which can make you feel uncertain about giving it. People may also feel excited when they receive gifts they have wanted for a long time. Of course, it’s fine to want the latest toys or books for a birthday gift. After all, it’s their special day.
④In the end, whether you give a second-hand or new gift depends on the situation. Both can show you care, but it’s important to consider what the birthday person would like the most. What matters most is the thought behind the gift, no matter if it’s new or old.
8. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Old things. B. New toys. C. Broken products. D. Huge landfills.
9. What can we know from the text?
A. New gifts can reduce waste and be good for the earth.
B. New gifts are in perfect condition and special.
C. Second-hand gifts are always cheaper than new ones.
D. Second-hand gifts are usually the latest toys or books.
10. What does the writer care most about when giving gifts?
A. The price of the gift. B. The popularity of the gift.
C. The style of the gift. D. The thought behind the gift.
11. Which of the following best shows the structure of the text?
A. B. C. D.
D
Old wives’ tales are pieces of advice that are supposed to solve common problems such as the medical ones or some problems at home. They are usually passed down through talking, and there are only a few having been written down. Some of them sound ridiculous and have no scientific meaning at all, just like jokes, while others are more reasonable, which are realized to be true.
Often, old wives’ tales take the form of warnings and are a way to prevent poor behavior in children. For example, “Eating candy before bedtime brings you bad dreams” is a common old wives’ tale that was probably thought up to stop children from eating too many unhealthy snacks. Similarly, “If you’ve been lying, your nose will be longer” is a trick trying to get naughty children to tell the truth.
Other old wives’ tales want to give advice about how to keep away from illnesses. “If you go outside with wet hair, you’ll catch a cold” is an old wives’ tale that’s still commonly heard today. However, colds are not caused by cold weather or wet hair. Instead, they are caused by viruses (病毒).
“Feed a cold, starve a fever” means that you should eat plenty of food when you have a cold, but not eat when you have a fever. This piece probably comes from the fact that people with a fever usually lose their appetite (胃口) anyway. Medical science has found that the body stops eating much when you have a fever because little food makes your immune system (免疫系统) fight bacterial infections (细菌感染), while eating a little more makes your immune system fight against viruses, like colds.
There are hundreds of old wives’ tales. Although there may be truth in a few of them, if you bear one, it’s best not to take it too seriously.
12. What does the underlined word “ridiculous” in Paragraph 1 probably mean? ________
A. Painful. B. Silly.
C. Helpful. D. Believable.
13. Which of the following may be a reason for telling old wives’ tales? ________
A. To stop the kid from a bad habit.
B. To get the baby to fall asleep quickly.
C. To find the medicine for an illness.
D. To give friends advice on relationships.
14. What can we know about the old wives’ tales? ________
A. We should take most of them seriously.
B. Some are explanations of illnesses.
C. Most of them can be found in the books.
D. Some are thought up to sell medicines.
15. What’s the text mainly about? ________
A. The development of old wives’ tales.
B. Different forms of old wives’ tales.
C. The ways of passing down old wives’ tales.
D. The advice on telling old wives’ tales.

例文
What a Great Change I’ve Made!
Good afternoon, boys and girls. Today I'm going to share the changes I've made in the past three years.
I used to be a shy boy. I was afraid of talking with classmates and always stayed alone. I had few friends and felt lonely at school.
Luckily, my teacher helped me a lot. She encouraged me to join group activities. I tried to communicate with others actively and took part in after-school clubs little by little.
Now I’m outgoing and have many good friends. I feel so proud and excited about this change. It tells me that taking small steps bravely can help us beat our weaknesses.
