If you enjoy daily puzzles like Wordle or crosswords, you may want to try some games beyond the New York Times. Like many people, I keep a folder of “daily games” on my phone. Inspired by friends online, I would like to share a few non-NYT games I now play every day.
Map Tap is a simple geography game. You see a 3D globe with no country borders. You must tap as close as possible to a named place, such as “London.” The closer you are, the more points you get, and there are five questions each round. Without familiar lines on the map, it can be hard to find even places you know well. But playing it really improves your knowledge of world geography.
TimeGuessr is similar. Each day brings five photos. For each one, you guess both the year and the place. The photos may show historical events or ordinary life. You study small clues — a shop sign, a license plate, or even people’s clothes — like a detective. It is a fun way to learn about the world.
The Loop is my favorite morning game. You get 12 pictures and must arrange them in a circle so that each one connects to its neighbors. For example, a square-root symbol may link to a toolbox and to a carrot. The links can be playful, and the game is forgiving, which makes it perfect when you are still half awake.
Clues by Sam is a logic puzzle. A grid shows people with names and jobs. Using given clues, you decide who is innocent and who is guilty. You cannot guess — every answer must be inferred from the clues.
The hardest game I play is Catfishing. You see the Wikipedia categories of a page and try to name it. There are ten questions, and the answers are often very hidden. Even so, it is endlessly challenging.
1. What is difficult about playing MapTap?
A. Remembering famous cities. B. Guessing the correct years.
C. Spelling foreign place names. D. Finding places without borders.
2. What is special about Clues by Sam?
A. Players must draw answers logically. B. It gets easier from Monday to Sunday.
C. Players arrange pictures in a circle. D. It shows photos from around the world.
3. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To compare NYT games with other puzzles. B. To recommend some daily games.
C. To teach readers how to play Wordle. D. To explain why puzzles beat social media.

A team of researchers has announced what they call the world’s first production-ready computer chip designed entirely by artificial intelligence. The chip, named Redwood, was created by Architect Labs, a laboratory focused on using AI to design custom chips. According to the team, only two human engineers were needed to write a high-level specification. After that, an AI system took over, completing the entire design and full verification (验证) of a working AI accelerator in less than two weeks.
Traditionally, designing a modern chip is a slow and costly process. It can take years and hundreds of millions of dollars, carried out by large teams of specialists. Redwood changes this pattern. The AI system not only produced the chip’s circuit design but also wrote the firmware and custom software needed to run AI models such as Llama and Qwen. Currently running on an FPGA platform, Redwood can handle models with billions of parameters (参数). When mapped to Samsung’s 8nm process, it delivers 1.75 times the processing speed of NVIDIA’s Jetson Orin Nano while using about half the power, giving it 3.4 times better performance per watt.
What makes Redwood unusual is its co-design approach. Instead of forcing software to fit pre-built hardware, the AI improved the chip’s circuits, firmware, and core code together around the needs of AI workloads. This creates a feedback loop: better AI models inform better hardware, and more efficient hardware enables better AI.
Industry experts see this as a turning point. Sunil Shenoy, a former senior Intel executive, said Redwood represents a real paradigm shift, making capabilities once limited to a few giants available at an amazing speed. While challenges remain in scaling such systems, the achievement suggests that the boundary between designing chips and using AI to design them is beginning to disappear.
4. What did the AI systems do for Redwood?
A. It wrote the chip’s specification. B. It handled the whole design process.
C. It evaluated the final cost. D. It named the new chip.
5. What does Redwood’s co-design approach show?
A. Hardware should come before software. B. Software matters more than hardware.
C. Traditional chip are easier to design. D. AI and hardware improve each other.
6. The phrase “paradigm shift” in Para 4 is closest in meaning to ________.
A. a sharp rise in the speed of chip production B. a complete change in how things are done
C. a breakthrough driven by a few industry giants D. a new design method that reduces the cost of chips
7. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. A New AI Chip with Better Power Efficiency B. Redwood: The First AI-Designed Chip
C. How AI is Reshaping the Chip Industry D. The Two-Week Project Behind a Faster Chip
【答案】4. B 5. D 6. B 7. B

C
The story of English is often told as a triumph: a minor Germanic dialect grew into the most widely used language on Earth. Yet English was, in a sense, born twice — and its second birth came after a near-death experience.
When the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes crossed the North Sea in the fifth century, they encountered a Britain that had been a Roman province for nearly four centuries. The native Celtic-speaking Britons were not wiped out but largely displaced, marginalized, or absorbed. Crucially, they left remarkably few traces on the language of their conquerors. Old English vocabulary for governance, warfare, and daily life is overwhelmingly Germanic; Celtic borrowed words number in dozens, not thousands. The few Celtic words that survived are words of landscape and nursery, not of law, religion, or power.
Then came the second birth — on the tip of a Norman sword. In 1066, William the Conqueror’s victory at Hastings established a French-speaking ruling class in England. For nearly three centuries, English was the language of the conquered: the peasant, the servant, the outlaw. French was the language of court, law, and literature; Latin remained the language of the Church and learning. English survived not because it was powerful but because it was spoken by the majority — the ordinary people whose labor fed the kingdom.
The result was not the victory of English over French but their combination. Middle English emerged as a mixture. Germanic bones, Romance flesh. The vocabulary of power — government, justice, parliament, sovereign — came from French; the vocabulary of the hearth — house, bread, child, love — remained English. This duality (双重性) remains today. We raise cattle (Anglo-Saxon) but eat beef (French boeuf); we live in houses (English) but reside in mansions (French). The linguistic contact of 1066 is reflected in our modern vocabulary.
What does the origin of English teach us? English rose not because it was elegant but because its speakers, through accident and disaster, became powerful. Its Celtic ghosts and French rulers remind us that every language is a graveyard of vanished peoples — and a proof of the unpredictable politics of survival.
8. What can we learn about the Celtic language’s influence on Old English?
A. It provided daily life vocabulary. B. It left a small number of borrowed words.
C. It disappeared after Germanic invasions. D. It was preserved in Church documents.
9. Why did English survive after the Norman Conquest?
A. It was easier to learn than French. B. It was protected by the Norman kings.
C. It was used in law and literature. D. It was spoken by most ordinary people.
10. The author uses the example of “cattle/ beef” mainly to show that ________.
A. French words sound more elegant B. the Norman Conquest shaped English words
C. social classes are reflected in modern English D. old French ruled over local dialects
11. What does the author mainly agree with about English?
A. It won for its inner beauty and flexibility. B. It grew from peaceful cultural exchanges.
C. It rose for historical accidents and power relations. D. Historians ignore Celtic influence on it.
【答案】8. B 9. D 10. B 11. C

D
Food markets have experienced considerable instability in recent years. Global warming is causing droughts, soil loss and extreme weather. Yet the fundamentals of food production were last transformed in the mid-20th century. Fortunately, global investments in agricultural innovation are on the rise. Funds for agri-tech companies reached $16.2 billion in 2025. Of this, $9 billion went to new research into increasing crop output, up from $2.5 billion in 2016. The focus of sustainability efforts is switching from preventing climate change to dealing with it and finding solutions.
Scientists are developing alternatives to the pesticides (杀虫剂) and fertilisers that have controlled modern agriculture since the Green Revolution of the mid-20th century, based on a better understanding of plants themselves. B-COS, a team from Ghent University, is genetically engineering bacteria to produce a special kind of molecule (分子). Tomato and potato plants sprayed (喷洒) with the molecules are tricked into believing they are under attack and activate their natural defenses against infection. B-COS is applying this approach to two new products: one to improve growth and drought tolerance, and another which it claims can reduce disease incidence by 40-50%.
Naturally, there are also companies exploring the opportunities presented by artificial intelligence. The general idea of this combination is called “precision agriculture”, which is to help farmers connect everything from the environmental conditions of individual fields to the genetic sequences (序列) of the bacteria present in the soil, and those of the plants themselves. This is then run through AI models that make predictions about the best conditions and treatments to achieve the highest crop output or produce the highest-quality crops.
“It is going to show us what’s going on in each square metre of the fields, such as temperature, water and carbon absorption,” says Mr. Anders, a managing partner of an agritech company.
There is still a long way to go. In 2024, agricultural tech companies attracted just 1.3% of global early-stage venture-capital funding despite agriculture accounting for about 4% of global GDP. But if high-tech innovations still make their way, and the funds keep flowing, a new age of precision agriculture is coming.
12. What is stressed about agricultural investment in paragraph 1?
A. Its instability. B. Its source. C. Its influence. D. Its shift.
13. Why did the B-COS team spray the molecules on tomato and potato plants?
A. To evaluate disease tolerance. B. To remove harmful substances.
C. To strengthen natural resistance. D. To protect healthy plants.
14. What does “precision agriculture” contribute to?
A. Accurate market forecasting. B. Improved crop storage methods.
C. Sufficient genetic information. D. Reasonable agricultural planning.
15. What is the author’s purpose in presenting the data in the last paragraph?
A. To call for greater investment. B. To warn of potential risks.
C. To cast light on the achievements. D. To give credit to the companies.
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. D 15. A

第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项多余选项。
The Romantic Poets: Prophets (先知) of a Broken World
The Romantic movement in English poetry, which flourished roughly between 1798 and 1832, is often remembered for its love of nature and its celebration of emotion. Yet this popular image is only half the truth. ____16____ The Romantics were not merely dreamers who fled from reality; they were, in many ways, the first modern writers to confront the spiritual crisis of an industrializing world.
The publication of Lyrical Ballads in 1798, a joint work by William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, is usually taken as the starting point of the movement. In his preface to the second edition, Wordsworth declared that poetry should be written in “the real language of men” and should focus on “incidents and situations from common life”. ____17____ It was a democratic (民主的) revolution in literature, one that challenged the refined, artificial style of the eighteenth century and insisted that ordinary people and ordinary speech could be fit subjects for great poetry.
Wordsworth himself displays the Romantic faith in nature as a source of moral and spiritual renewal. In poems such as Tintern Abbey, he describes how the memory of natural beauty can restore the mind in moments of “hardships” and dull routines of daily life.”. ____18____
Coleridge, by contrast, was drawn to the mysterious, the supernatural, and the irrational. His poems The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Kubla Khan explore guilt, imagination, and the mysterious. It was this darker, more visionary side of Romanticism that later poets such as Poe and Baudelaire would inherit (继承). Together, the two poets represented two sides of the Romantic temperament (气质): one rooted in the visible world, the other reaching toward the invisible.
The second generation of Romantics — Byron, Shelley, and Keats — was more rebellious (反叛的) and more tragic. Byron became a European celebrity, a symbol of rebellious individuality; Shelley was dismissed from Oxford for his atheism and later drowned at sea; Keats died of a serious lung disease at twenty-five. ____19____ Their short, intense lives seemed to embody the very intensity they sought in poetry.
Today the Romantics are often taught as a reaction against the Enlightenment’s faith in reason. ____20____ They did not reject reason so much as insist that it was not enough — that without imagination, sympathy, and a sense of the sacred, human beings would lose their capacity to feel, and with it, their humanity.
A. But this too is an oversimplification.
B. Nature, for the Romantics, was often a source of comfort rather than fear.
C. They lived and wrote so urgently that their work feels permanently young.
D. The movement was born in an age of revolution, war, and rapid social change.
E. Many of them devoted themselves to social reform movements of their time.
F. For him, nature was not a decoration but a living presence, a teacher, and a healer.
G. This emphasis on common language and common life broke the literary conventions of the day.
【答案】16. D 17. G 18. F 19. C 20. A

Jamal was a shoeshine boy. He lost his father when he was very young and now lived in a slum (贫民窟) with his mother and sister. After school, he would sit near a cinema hall and polish shoes for a living.
Like many boys his age, Jamal had a dream. He loved hero movies. Every evening, after work, he would stand outside the cinema hall and stare at the posters. Brave men in shining armour (盔甲), clever detectives, fearless policemen. “One day,” he would whisper to himself, “I will do something brave too.”
But deep down, he knew it was a foolish dream. He was small and thin, nothing like those muscular heroes on the posters. His days were filled with the same dull routine: dusting shoes, spreading polish, brushing hard until they shone, then holding out his hand for a few coins. He was just a poor boy in a big city, ordinary, invisible, and forgotten.
One hot day, Jamal was counting his earnings when he overheard a passerby say, “A thief has just escaped from the jewellery shop across the street. He stole a gold necklace.”
Before Jamal could move, a customer stopped him. “Boy, polish my shoes nicely,” the man said, looking at his wristwatch.
The man was huge. He stood over Jamal like a tower, his shoulders wide as a door, his arms thick and heavy. His hands were so large that they could have covered Jamal’s whole face. One blow from those fists, Jamal thought, and he would not get up again. Jamal quietly put away his curiosity and knelt down to polish the man’s shoes.
The man put his left shoe on the stand. It was a heavy leather shoe with long laces. Jamal dusted it, applied polish, and began shining it carefully. Through the corner of his eye, he saw two policemen walking towards the jewellery shop across the street, as if searching for someone. He wanted to go and find out what had happened, but the customer suddenly lost his temper.
“You, silly chap! Polish my shoes till they shine. And be quick about it.”
Jamal was frightened. He bent his head and focused on the shoe. As soon as he finished the left shoe, he said, “The other shoe, sir.”
The man put his other foot on the stand. Jamal dusted it quickly, applied polish, and began to shine it. He was about to tie the laces when he stopped. Something made him want to take one more look. He spread a little more polish on the shoe and rubbed it slowly, then bent his head lower, as if checking his work.
‘What can it be?’ Jamal bent his head to take a closer look. ‘My goodness!’
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;

Paragraph 2:

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Jamal’s heart raced as he realized what he had seen. Tucked inside the shoe’s inner lining was the shiny gold necklace stolen from the jewellery shop. It was this big man standing right before him who was the thief. Fear swept over Jamal, but he remembered his dream of being brave. He dared not shout, for the thief would hurt him at once. An idea flashed through his mind. While polishing the shoe, he secretly tied the two long shoelaces of the thief’s shoes tightly together without being noticed. He kept calm and pretended to finish his work quietly.
The next moment, the man felt a sudden pull at his feet and crashed flat on his face. Before he could struggle to stand up, Jamal shouted loudly to draw the policemen’s attention. Hearing the cry, the two policemen rushed over immediately. They caught the thief and found the hidden gold necklace in his shoe. Praised by the officers, Jamal smiled. He finally understood that true bravery didn’t depend on strong muscles. Even a thin ordinary boy could do something heroic.

57. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一个完整的故事。
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
