My 2nd grader finished his math enrichment, and then cheerfully created blank versions for his dad and me to try: a subtraction-based (基于减法的), number-placement logic puzzle. My husband withdrew in 10 minutes, returned and handed over the completed puzzle. I stared at my blank puzzle. “Mom, are you struggling?” my son asked. Considerable pressure started to spread. “I’m thinking,” I said. Fortunately, I gathered myself and finally solved the problem.
Yes, I’m talking about math anxiety. By some estimates, nearly 1 in 5 US adults report severe math anxiety, and the vast majority of them report at least some level of discomfort with the subject. In a representative survey of US teachers, 67 percent said that math anxiety was a challenge for their students, and 1 in 4 said they often felt anxious doing math problems themselves.
Before my son’s question, I hadn’t considered myself anxious. I performed well in school math. As the senior research and data reporter for a national education news site, I’m often happily up to my eyeballs in data and algorithms. Yet knowing I wasn’t able to answer an elementary math puzzle instantly resulted in tension frustration, and even shame that was obvious to my 8-year-old. And below the surface, those feelings raised an even more insidious (潜在的) question that has helped drive math anxiety in American education for over a century: Am I not a math person?
Emerging cognitive and neuroscience research finds that math anxiety is not just a response to poor math performance — in fact, 4 out of 5 students with math anxiety are average-to-high math performers. Rather, math anxiety is linked to higher activity in areas of the brain that relate to the fear of failure before a math task, not during it. This fear takes up mental bandwidth during a math task — creating, for example, my feeling suddenly blank and unable to think. In turn, that discomfort tends to make those with math anxiety more reluctant to practice math, which then erodes (削弱) confidence and skill. Therefore, there aren’t “math people” or “non-math people”; there are only those who work through the challenging lesson and those who give up too soon.
4. What do the figures mentioned in paragraph 2 indicate?
A. Math anxiety is hard to deal with.
B. Math anxiety is common in the US.
C. Math education in the US faces challenges.
D. Math education in the US has changed a lot.
5. What did the author doubt after hearing her son’s question?
A. Her math ability. B. America’s educational system.
C. Her achievements in the past. D. The reliability of scientific findings.
6 What does the author aim to tell us at the end of the text?
A. Face reality bravely. B. Practice makes perfect.
C. Failure is the mother of success. D. Be open to challenges.
7. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. The impact of math anxiety. B. The assessment of math anxiety.
C. The truth behind math anxiety. D. The ways to deal with math anxiety.

For many, travel isn’t just about the destination—it’s about making the most of the journey. However, for a lot of people, the journey is often ruined by an uncomfortable experience often accompanied by vomiting, known as motion sickness. If you’ve ever felt the unwelcome urge to vomit while reading or using your device in a moving vehicle, you are not alone. Recognizing this common issue, Apple has stepped up to offer a revolutionary solution: the Vehicle Motion Cues feature for iPhones and iPads.
Motion sickness occurs when there is a disconnect between what your eyes see and what your body feels. When you’re in a moving vehicle, your body senses motion through its vestibular system(the inner ear), but if your eyes are focused on a still screen that doesn’t reflect this movement, the brain receives mixed signals. This sensory conflict can lead to dizziness, nausea, and overall discomfort — symptoms all too familiar to motion sickness sufferers.
Apple’s new Vehicle Motion Cues feature is designed to bridge this gap and bring relief to those likely to experience motion sickness. This revolutionary feature works by displaying animated dots, around the edges of your screen, which move at the same time and speed as the motion of your vehicle. These moving cues help keep the motion your body feels in line with what your eyes see, effectively reducing the sensory mismatch that causes motion sickness.
The magic lies in the simplicity and effectiveness. The animated dots move in consistency with the vehicle’s motion, providing a visual representation of the movement your body is experiencing. By matching the visual input with the physical sensations of motion, your brain is less likely to experience the confusion that leads to sickness.
Early reports and user feedback indicate that Vehicle Motion Cues is receiving high praise for its effectiveness. So next time you embark on a journey, whether short or long, remember that Apple’s got your back — or rather, your brain helping you make the most of every mile with ease and comfort.
8. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The principle of Apples new design. B. The cause of motion sickness.
C. The functions of Apple’s new design. D. The symptoms of motion sickness.
9. What does the underlined phrase “this gap” in paragraph 3 refer to according to the text?
A. The difference between the brain signals and the inner ear perception.
B. The disconnect between visual input and physical feelings of motion.
C. The difference between sensory conflicts and motion sickness.
D. The disconnect between a still screen and the moving vehicle.
10. By displaying animated dots around the screen, Apple’s Vehicle Motion Cues is able to__________.
A. ease sensory conflicts in the brain B. tell the mismatched physical sensations
C. balance the movement of our eyes and body D. increase the effectiveness of vehicle motion
11. Which can be the best title for the passage?
A. Enjoy Your Reading: Apple offers a Revolutionary Solution
B. Find the Magic of a Moving Vehicle: Apple’s Got Your Back
C. Make the Most of Your Body Movement: Apple Bridges the Gap
D. Say Goodbye to Motion Sickness: Apple Introduces Its New Design
D
Aircraft are some of the most complex vehicles out there, which need a great energy supply. If you tried to design an airplane supported by today’s batteries, you would have to take out all the passengers and goods and fill that space with batteries just to fly for under an hour. Jet fuel can hold about 50 times more energy compared to batteries per unit mass. To close that gap, we need to make batteries lighter in the future. New batteries are being developed, but they aren’t yet ready for providing any aircraft with energy independently.
However, we can get some benefits by using hybrid propulsion systems Hybrid aircraft use a combination of batteries and jet fuels. Using batteries as a power assist during takeoff and climb is a very promising option. Taxiing (滑行) to the runway by using just electric power could also save a significant amount of jet fuel. There is a sweet spot between how much electricity used from the battery and how much jet fuel used for the maximum benefits. How to get there is at the center of my research.
Besides hybrid propulsion systems, we can dig deep into jet fuel. The first option is that fuels can be made from corn, oilseeds and other fats. But the supply is limited, and using more biomass for fuel could compete with food production and lead to deforestation. A second option is using synthetic (合成的) sustainable jet fuel, which involves capturing carbon from the air or other industrial processes and combining it with hydrogen. The only emission is water. But that’s a complex and costly process and does not have a high production scale yet.
By 2050, we could see three to five times more carbon dioxide emissions from aircraft than before 2020. The International Civil Aviation Organization’s long-term goal is to cut net carbon dioxide emissions by 50% by 2050 compared with the level in 2005. I think we should raise our expectations about the goal in 2050 because technological progress is faster than the growth of demand.
12. What does the author want to tell us in paragraph 1?
A. The complexity of aircraft transportation. B. The difficulty in fully electrifying aircraft.
C. The difference between fuel and batteries. D. The feature of new batteries in the future.
13. What is the focus of the author’s research?
A. Improving the safety of airplanes during the taxiing process.
B. Designing a hybrid propulsion system to help airplanes take off.
C. Calculating how much energy is used in different processes of flight.
D. Finding the right consumption proportion of electricity to fuel during flights.
14. What do we know about the two options mentioned by the author?
A. The first option is more expensive.
B. The first option needs more research.
C. The second option is more environmentally-friendly.
D. The second option consumes more agriculture resources.
15. What is the author s attitude towards the long-term goal?
A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Uncaring. D. Unclear.
I had a book in my hand and a student asked me what I was reading. When I told him it was a history book, he said, “I don’t like history. It’s so boring.” I wasn’t surprised by his opinion. ___16___
I, on the other hand, have never found history to be a drag because it’s full of engaging stories and valuable life lessons. ___17___ And who wouldn’t benefit from the mistakes of the overly strict Ming Dynasty? The Spanish-American philosopher George Santayana was correct when he said, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”
___18___ First of all, it gives us a sense of identity. Your ancestors stretch back for thousands of years in an unbroken line. They shared the same sun and moon as you, experienced the same seasons, and felt the same emotions. Each generation became a building block for the next, creating the society where you live today.
Another reason to study history is to help develop your critical thinking. Critical thinking involves analyzing information from different sources in order to make informed decisions. There is nothing really new under the sun. ___19___ Analyzing these diverse solutions may help you make wise decisions to deal with your own challenges.
The study of history isn’t just about exploring significant events, powerful figures, and memorizing important dates. It’s also about the capturing lives of ordinary people. Sima Qian, known as the “father of Chinese history,” devoted much of the 130 chapters of his Records of the Grand Historian to talking about the lives of poets and merchants, and even magicians and outlaws (刺客). ___20___
The same is true today. Each of you adds to the richness of society, while also linking yourself to the past and to the people Sima Qian wrote about. When you study the past, you’re ultimately discovering more about yourself.
A. Apart from being “not boring”, there are several significant reasons to dig into history.
B. History only focuses on the achievements of famous kings and queens, ignoring the contributions of ordinary individuals.
C. Who could find the strategic battles of the Warring States Period or the elegance (风雅) of the Song Dynasty boring?
D. He was interested in the everyday lives of common people and how each individual contributed to the richness of society.
E. For many young students, history is about long-gone figures — those who lived long ago, had strange haircuts, and wore funny, outdated clothes.
F. The problems you face have been encountered many times before, and different ways have been employed to solve them.
G. Does history serve as a mirror for humanity, reflecting our past to guide our future?

Dear Badminton,
I do remember the days, before we met. I came back to an empty home with nothing to look forward to. There were many nights when I would lie in bed wondering if I would ever find something as ___21___ as you. After years of nothing happening, you moved next door in the form of a court and ___22___ your doors open for me to walk through.
In my entire life, I never knew I would find such ___23___ in spending time getting to know you. When I started this journey with you, I was obviously ___24___ but you were patient and let me try again and again. That is one thing I like about you — no matter how big a ___25___ I might be in life, you give me a chance to be the best ___26___ of myself with you. I fail many times. I am out of breath. I run badly. But ___27___ I lose, you let me play again. When I’m too tired, you tell me that it’s time for me to take a rest while also assuring me that you’ll be open tomorrow for me to come back and pick up wherever I ___28___.
There were times when I’d think: Is this going to be another ___29___ hobby that I pursue only to give up after not making any ____30____? That has happened before. It happened with me playing the piano. It happened with me learning to make cheesecake.
You make me want to be ____31____. I wake up early to train. I put the right food into my body so that I stay healthy. I practice so that I’m always prepared for a ____32____ whenever it should happen. I’ll do my best to make you feel ____33____. I’ll do my best to be there for you as ____34____ as the rock you’ve been for me. As a sport, you don’t believe words or read letters. You only see actions, which is why I’ll ____35____ the talk.
When I’m in the court and I see old people coming in with their inhalers to play, I suddenly have the answer to that question I have been asked so many times — “What do you want to be when you grow up?” I want to be there with you till the end.
Love you always,
Paul

Ten-year-old Daisy was Abe Galan’s dog. After his wife passed away, they became very close.
One afternoon, Abe was sick, and Daisy saw Abe being driven away by his children. They took him to the newly built Memorial Medical Center, where he was to receive a small operation. The medical center was more than four miles away, and Abe had never been there before.
Minutes after Abe was driven away, another car came and drove Daisy to the house where Rachel, Abe’s daughter, lived. Daisy should stay with Rachel while Abe was away.
The first night, Daisy never slept. She paced the floor and cried. The second night, Rachel let Daisy sleep in the yard. Daisy spent the night digging, and tunneled out before dawn. Rachel called her brothers and sisters at six in the morning and said, “My goodness, Daisy is gone!”
Abe’s family members anxiously gathered at Rachel’s home and fanned out like soldiers. They walked every step of the neighborhood, putting up posters on all the poles. They searched the street where their dad lived. They knew it would kill him if he lost that dog. Many hours had passed, but there was still no sign of Daisy. Soon, dark clouds gathered in the sky and the rain began falling heavily.
Luckily, at about 2:00 pm, Rachel finally found that Daisy appeared in Abe’s yard. She was wet and looked anxious and impatient, barking aloud. Although Rachel didn’t know how she had managed to find the way back. She knew she needed to catch her and lock her right away. However, no matter how hard Rachel tried, she couldn’t make it. Each time she neared Daisy and tried catching her, the dog just stepped away and looked angry, sometimes even showing her teeth.

6. What does the author aim to tell us at the end of the text?
B 5. A 6. D 7. C

根据第二段中“By some estimates, nearly 1 in 5 US adults report severe math anxiety, and the vast majority of them report at least some level of discomfort with the subject. In a representative survey of US teachers, 67 percent said that math anxiety was a challenge for their students, and 1 in 4 said they often felt anxious doing math problems themselves. (据估计,近五分之一的美国成年人患有严重的数学焦虑症,其中绝大多数人至少在某种程度上对这门学科感到不适。在一项针对美国教师的代表性调查中,67%的教师表示,数学焦虑对他们的学生来说是一个挑战,四分之一的教师表示,他们自己做数学题时经常感到焦虑)”可推知,这些数据表明了数学焦虑在美国是普遍存在的,很常见。故选B项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中“Considerable pressure started to spread. “I’m thinking,” I said. (相当大的压力开始扩散。“我在想,”我说)”和第三段中“As the senior research and data reporter for a national education news site, I’m often happily up to my eyeballs in data and algorithms. 故选A项。
根据最后一段中“Therefore, there aren’t “math people” or “non-math people”; there are only those who work through the challenging lesson and those who give up too soon. (因此,没有‘数学人’或‘非数学人’;世界上只有那些经历了挑战的人和那些过早放弃的人)”可知,作者认为数学的成功取决于毅力和应对挑战的能力。由此可知,作者鼓励读者接受挑战,不要过早放弃。故选D项。
【7题详解】

由文章第二段“Motion sickness occurs when there is a disconnect between what your eyes see and what your body feels. When you’re in a moving vehicle, your body senses motion through its vestibular system (the inner ear), but if your eyes are focused on a still screen that doesn’t reflect this movement, the brain receives mixed signals. This sensory conflict can lead to dizziness, nausea, and overall discomfort — symptoms all too familiar to motion sickness sufferers.(当你的眼睛看到的和你的身体感觉之间出现脱节时,就会发生晕动病。当你在移动的车辆中时,你的身体通过前庭系统(内耳)感知运动,但如果你的眼睛聚焦在一个没有反映这种运动的静止屏幕上,大脑会收到混合信号。这种感官冲突会导致头晕、恶心和整体不适——这些症状对晕车患者来说太熟悉了)”可知,本段主要讲晕车的原因。故选B项。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据文章第三段中的句子“Apple’s new Vehicle Motion Cues feature is designed to bridge this gap and bring relief to those likely to experience motion sickness. This revolutionary feature works by displaying animated dots, around the edges of your screen, which move at the same time and speed as the motion of your vehicle. These moving cues help keep the motion your body feels in line with what your eyes see, effectively reducing the sensory mismatch that causes motion sickness.(苹果的新‘车辆运动提示’功能旨在弥合这一差距,并为可能晕车的人带来缓解。
由文章第三段“Apple’s new Vehicle Motion Cues feature is designed to bridge this gap and bring relief to those likely to experience motion sickness. This revolutionary feature works by displaying animated dots, around the edges of your screen, which move at the same time and speed as the motion of your vehicle. These moving cues help keep the motion your body feels in line with what your eyes see, effectively reducing the sensory mismatch that causes motion sickness.(苹果公司新的Vehicle Motion Cue功能旨在弥合这一差距,并为那些可能患有晕动病的人带来缓解。这一革命性功能的工作原理是在屏幕边缘显示动画点,这些点与车辆的运动同时以相同的速度移动。这些移动的线索有助于使你的身体感觉与你的眼睛所看到的保持一致,有效地减少了导致晕车的感官不匹配)”可知,通过在屏幕周围显示动画点,Applet Vehicle Motion Cues能够缓解大脑中的感官冲突。故选A项。
由文章第一段中的“However, for a lot of people, the journey is often ruined by an uncomfortable experience often accompanied by vomiting, known as motion sickness. If you’ve ever felt the unwelcome urge to vomit while reading or using your device in a moving vehicle, you’re not alone. Recognizing this common issue, Apple has stepped up to offer a revolutionary solution; the Vehicle Motion Cues feature for iPhones and iPads.(然而,对于很多人来说,旅途往往会被一种不舒服的体验所破坏,这种体验通常伴随着呕吐,被称为晕车。如果你曾经在阅读或在行驶的车辆中使用设备时感到不受欢迎的呕吐冲动,那么你并不孤单。认识到这一共同问题,苹果公司已经加紧提供革命性的解决方案;iPhone和iPad的Vehicle Motion Cue功能)”以及下文内容可知,文章介绍苹果公司的Vehicle Motion Cue功能能解决人们晕车问题。由此可知,D项Say Goodbye to Motion Sickness: Apple Introduces Its New Design(告别晕车:苹果推出新设计)适合作本文最佳标题。故选D项。

A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Uncaring. D. Unclear.
B 13. D 14. C 15. A

The only emission is water.
根据最后一段中“I think we should raise our expectations about the goal in 2050 because technological progress is faster than the growth of demand. (我认为我们应该提高对2050年目标的预期,因为技术进步比需求增长快。)”可知,作者认为技术进步的速度可以满足需求,目标是可以达成的。由此可知,作者对该目标持积极乐观的态度。故选A项。
E 17. C 18. A 19. F 20. D

Love you always,
Paul

One possible version:
Protecting our eyes to enjoy a bright world
Short-sightedness is a common problem among Chinese students. According to a national survey of students’ health, the percentage of students suffering from short-sightedness is increasing as students grow up. 36% of primary school students are short-sighted, while the figure rises to 73.6% among junior high school students. Shockingly, 85% of senior high school students have the problem.
There are several reasons for this situation. Firstly, with the development of technology, students spend more and more time on electronic devices, such as mobile phones and computers. Secondly, the heavy academic burden forces students to study for long hours without proper breaks, causing eye strain.
To protect our eyes, we should limit the time we spend on electronic devices and take regular breaks. It’s also important to ensure sufficient outdoor activities, which can help relax our eyes. Only by taking these measures can we enjoy a bright world.
