Volleyball became my sport for two reasons. Primarily, my parents wanted me to try a sport that could make me enjoy exercise. I also knew that my mom loved playing it during her youth. I thought maybe I could feel the same. Actually, I fell in love with it after just a few practices.
Between practices, I would stretch (伸出) my arms out, hold my hands together and push my wrists down to try to build muscle memory (肌肉记忆). I would catch the ball and focus on forming a triangular (三角形的) shape each time. When I’d send the ball upwards, I knew I was one step closer to doing it well. I worked very hard because I wanted to get better. I wanted to be great one day.
However, I didn’t have the early start most girls had. I started many years later than many other girls. I was put into a difficult situation when the club where I practiced placed me on their strongest team for my age group (年龄段) in the middle of the season (赛季). Most of the girls did not welcome me. While this competition inside and between teams was sometimes helpful, it proved to be unhealthy. It was dangerous when it reached a tipping point (临界点). By the end of my freshman year of high school, I’d reached my breaking point.
Over four years, I only touched a volleyball a few times and only in informal settings. When the chance came to play with one of my best friends in some friendly matches, I hesitated. I finally agreed, making it a point not to be so hard on myself. Volleyball finally brought the same enjoyment that had made me fall in love with it. I look forward to every chance I have to play now. I expect there will be more volleyball matches.
24. Why did the author choose to play volleyball?
A. To find joy in exercise. B. To copy her mother’s experience.

25. How is paragraph 2 developed?
A. By telling a story about her teammates. B. By explaining her training purpose.
C. By comparing different training methods. D. By listing clear actions and details.
26. What can be drawn from the author’s team experience?
A. It improved her skills quickly. B. It taught her to get on with teammates.
C. It kept her away from volleyball. D. It proved that hard work pays off.
27. What does the text show?
A. Early practice leads to better results. B. Joy returns when you ease up on yourself.
C. A strict coach makes a great player. D. Pressure sometimes breaks a person.
C
A challenge is a situation that tests your abilities. It needs hard work and courage to get through. Challenges come from many sources, and knowing where they come from is the first step toward dealing with them well.
The sources of challenges are often two-part: external (外部的) and internal. External challenges come from the world around you such as moving to a new school, getting used to new study methods, or facing more competition from classmates. Unexpected things, like sudden exams or group project pressure, can also be external challenges. Internal challenges come from yourself. They might be not having enough skills, not knowing some knowledge, or feeling frightened and unsure about yourself — these things can slow down your progress. Often, the hardest challenges mix both external pressure and internal worries.
Successfully managing challenges requires a step-by-step method. First, look at the situation clearly and honestly. If a challenge feels too big, divide it into small, easy-to-do tasks. For example, instead of being unconfident with a big project, focus on finishing the first small research. Secondly, actively look for resources (资源) and support. This could be about learning new knowledge through study, improving skills with practice, or depending on the guidance of teachers and the encouragement of friends. Having people to support you gives not only useful tips but also courage and strength. Finally, build resilience. Setbacks (挫折) are a certain part on the path to any meaningful goal — they might make you feel down. The key is to stand up again, learn from what went wrong, and keep moving toward your goal.
In short, challenges are something you can’t avoid, and they’re necessary for growth. By understanding where they come from, designing a strategic plan, and carrying on with it without giving up, you can turn difficulties into chances to become better — both in your studies and personal life.
28. Which can be considered an internal source of challenges?
A. Uncertainty about the future. B. The development of AI technology.
C. Difficult Gaokao questions. D. A new living environment.
29. What should we do firstly when learning to use a video editing app according to the passage?
A. Wait to see if it becomes easier. B. Learn new editing skills with practice.
C. Master its basic uses one by one. D. Ask friends for encouragement.
30. What does the underlined word “resilience” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. The gift for solving problems. B. The knowledge of setting goals.
C. The decision to keep going. D. The ability to get back up.
31. What is the writer’s opinion on challenges?
A. They set back one’s growth. B. They are a must for success.
C. They can be managed wisely. D. They come from inner thoughts.
D
A recent study from the University of Minnesota has discovered a simple and powerful way to improve student learning: more natural light. The research team found that students in classrooms with large windows and plenty of sunlight showed considerably better learning performance and focus levels, compared to those in classrooms with smaller windows or primarily artificial (人工的) lighting.
Dr. Emily Carter, the lead researcher, explained the findings. “We’ve long believed that environment matters, but this study provides strong evidence (证据) specifically for natural light,” she said. “It’s not just about seeing better; it’s about the biological influence of sunlight on our focus and mood. This could be a game-changer for how we design schools.” She added that spending money on better window design and skylights could be a cost-effective way to improve students’ learning performance.
The study involved 101 students from three local high schools. Each student took part in learning sessions held in two different classroom environments on separate days: one was a “bright” room with large windows allowing plenty of sunlight, and the other was a “standard” room with smaller windows and relying mostly on ceiling lights. The students completed reading comprehension tasks and memory tests during each session. To ensure fairness, the order in which students experienced the rooms was randomized (随机安排), and the tasks were of similar difficulty.
The results were clear. On average, students scored 10% higher on the memory tests and reported feeling more focused and less tired in the “bright” classroom. Dr. Carter and her team believe these findings offer practical guidance. They suggest that school planners should think about how to get more natural light when designing new school buildings. For existing buildings, simple changes, like moving desks closer to windows or using lighter curtains to allow more light in, can make a real difference.
32. What is the main finding of the study?
A. Students prefer classrooms with more outside view.
B. Large windows can make it hard for students to focus.
C. Artificial lighting is harmful to students’ eyesight over time.
D. Classrooms with more natural light improve student learning.
33. What does the underlined word “game-changer” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Something that makes a big difference. B. A game that can be played indoors.
C. A challenge difficult to overcome. D. A project expensive to complete.
34. What is the main purpose of paragraph 3?
A. To introduce the researchers. B. To present the students’ opinions.
C. To describe the research methods. D. To discuss the cost of the changes.
35. What do the researchers suggest based on their study?
A. Schools should stop using all artificial lights.
B. Students should spend more time outdoors.
C. Classrooms should be painted in brighter colors.
D. School design should make better use of natural light.

I had always been weak in English writing. My articles were filled with simple sentences and all kinds of grammar mistakes, so I often got low marks in every English exam. Every time the teacher handed out exam papers, I would quickly cover my paper, afraid that my classmates would see my terrible scores. Watching them get high marks without much effort, I felt deeply upset and helpless. Little by little, I even made up my mind to give up English writing completely.
Luckily, my English teacher soon noticed my bad mood. Instead of blaming me for my poor performance, she stayed after class and talked with me patiently. She told me that valuable progress never comes in a short time, and sticking to daily practice is the most useful way to get through all kinds of difficulties. Her warm words brought me a little hope again.
Encouraged by what she said, I decided to make a real change. I bought a thick notebook to write down beautiful sentences and useful expressions from Reader’s Digest every day. After finishing my schoolwork, I rewrote my compositions again and again. Each afternoon after class, I went to her office and handed my revised articles to her to correct all my mistakes. I reviewed these marked points every night to avoid making the same errors next time.
However, two months of steady hard work did not bring me better results. Staring at the disappointing paper covered with red lines, I lost all my confidence once more. I could not help wondering if all my time and effort meant nothing at all.

M: I prefer historical novels. I find it fascinating to explore different time periods. I highly recommend All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr.
W: I used to think historical novels usually had disappointing endings, but I believe in your taste. I’ll add that to my reading list. By the way, how often do you read?
M: I do some reading before bedtime every day. Well, I’d better get going. Linda texted me ten minutes ago. She’s been waiting for me in the tea house.

【答案】18. B 19. C 20. A
【解析】
【原文】 M: The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway’s most lasting works and may become one of the true classics of this generation. It played a great part in his winning the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 and the 1954 Nobel Prize in Literature. And confirmed his power and presence in the literary world. Hemingway is also one of my favourite writers. Besides The Old Man and the Sea, I have read some of his other works, such as The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms and The Snows of Kilimanjaro. But The Old Man and the Sea is the one that left the deepest impression on me. This novel mainly wrote about one old man alone in the sea who fishes. He caught one big fish. But he met a shark on the way home. The old man used all his skills to fight with the shark. At last, the fish he caught was eaten up by the shark, but he never gave up. This book shows to us that confidence is just like the automobile motor and its power which makes the person go forward.

A. It improved her skills quickly. B. It taught her to get on with teammates.

27. What does the text show?
A. Early practice leads to better results. B. Joy returns when you ease up on yourself.

【答案】28. A 29. C 30. D 31. C
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了挑战的定义、内外来源,以及应对挑战的步骤,阐明挑战对成长的必要性。
【28题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“Internal challenges come from yourself. They might be not having enough skills, not knowing some knowledge, or feeling frightened and unsure about yourself — these things can slow down your progress.(内在挑战源于你自身。它们可能是技能不足、知识欠缺,或是对自己感到恐惧和不确定——这些都会减缓你的进步)”推知,对未来的不确定属于源于自身的内在挑战。故选A项。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“Successfully managing challenges requires a step-by-step method. First, look at the situation clearly and honestly. If a challenge feels too big, divide it into small, easy-to-do tasks.(成功应对挑战需要循序渐进的方法。首先,清晰诚实地审视现状。如果一个挑战看起来太大,就把它分解成小而容易完成的任务)”可推断,学习使用视频剪辑软件时,首先应将其分解,逐一掌握基本用法。故选C项。
【30题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中的“Setbacks (挫折) are a certain part on the path to any meaningful goal — they might make you feel down. The key is to stand up again, learn from what went wrong, and keep moving toward your goal.(挫折是实现任何有意义目标道路上的必然部分——它们可能会让你情绪低落。关键是重新站起来,从错误中学习,继续朝着目标前进)”可知,前文提及培养resilience,后文具体解释面对挫折要重新振作,由此猜测resilience意为“恢复力,重新振作的能力”,与D项“重新站起来的能力”意思相近。故选D项。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“In short, challenges are something you can’t avoid, and they’re necessary for growth. By understanding where they come from, designing a strategic plan, and carrying on with it without giving up, you can turn difficulties into chances to become better.(总之,挑战是无法避免的,它们对成长至关重要。通过了解挑战的来源、制定策略计划并坚持不懈地执行,你可以将困难转化为变得更好的机会)”可知,作者认为挑战可以被明智地应对和管理。故选C项。

【答案】32. D 33. A 34. C 35. D

【40题详解】
结合小标题“Enjoy your friendship(享受你的友谊)”和下文“Try not to change them from who they are to what you want them to be(试着不要改变他们,让他们变成你想要的样子)”可知,本段描述的是欣赏朋友原本的样子,不改变他们。选项D“尽量不要挑朋友的毛病”正是享受友谊的一种体现,可以引出下文不要试图改变朋友。故选D。

【答案】One possible version:
Paragraph 1
One afternoon, I wandered into my teacher’s office with tears welling up in my eyes. I told her honestly that I planned to give up English writing, because my daily practice failed to bring satisfying scores and left me discouraged. My teacher comforted me patiently and pointed out my silent progress in grammar and expression that I had ignored. Encouraged by her warm words, I adjusted my study methods. I sorted out all my writing mistakes, memorized useful sentences, and revised my old compositions over and over again. I kept practicing steadily, hoping to make real progress step by step.
Paragraph 2
Months later, the city-wide English examination arrived. Sitting in the exam room, I felt worried at first, fearing I might make stupid mistakes. However, all the skills and expressions I had practiced hard came to my mind naturally. I organized my ideas logically, finished the composition smoothly and checked every sentence carefully. After the exam, I felt unusually peaceful and confident. When the results came out, I was delighted to find my writing score improved greatly. I learned that constant perseverance is the key to progress, and no sincere effort will ever go to waste.
