A grandmother cooks chicken. A group of kids, ages 8 to 14, watch her make the dish. This cooking class is part of a “Summer Camp” in Southern California. At this camp, grandmas are in charge. Each week, they teach young campers how to cook a new dish and do crafts.
“Loneliness is something that seniors are challenged with, and they love having younger people around them,” said Zainab, who works at Olive Community Services that brings older adults together and created the camp.
During the last week of the camp, a 9-year-old Janna learned how to use a sewing machine and make pockets. The camper had pressed hard on the machine’s pedal, making the needle move quickly. “Slowly, slowly,” Rahim, a grandma teaching the sewing class, said to her. The girl smiled when she made it. Rahim said the camp is “filling a gap” for kids. Many schools don’t teach these skills like cooking and sewing.
Rahim also doesn’t get to spend much time with her grandchildren because they don’t live close. “It is heartwarming to be able to interact with those who love being around you,” she said.
The summer camp was organized through a partnership with the Golden Connections Club started by a 14-year-old high school student Leena to encourage teens and seniors to interact. She noticed that many students didn’t have the chance to spend as much time with their grandparents. She also learned about challenges faced by senior adults, such as unfair treatment.
The club organizes monthly lunches at Leena’s school. They invite the seniors to the school and discuss topics where both groups can learn from each other. One of the most valuable lessons they’ve shared with her is to live in the moment, and this has taken on new meaning for Leena. “The people we have right now, they’re not going to be with us forever,” she said.

The growth mindset is the belief that intellectual abilities can be developed and are not fixed, which have received a great deal of attention in schools and among researchers.
According to a study, a teacher’s growth mindset acts as a “support” that can draw out a student’s growth mindset at the very beginning and make it maintainable and actionable in the classroom. These teachers may convey how, in their classes, mistakes are learning opportunities, not signs of low ability, and back up this view with assignments and evaluations that reward continual improvement. This could encourage a student to continue acting on their growth mindset.
The study analyzed data from the National Study of Learning Mindset, which was an intervention experiment conducted with a sample of ninth-grade students’ math grades. The present focus on math grades is motivated by the fact that students tend to find math challenging and anxiety inducing, and therefore, a growth mindset might help students face those challenges productively.
In the study, researchers show that the positive effect of a short growth-mindset intervention on ninth-grade students’ math grades was concentrated among students whose teachers themselves had growth mindset. They also found that baseline students — serve as a benchmark (基准点) for comparing and evaluating the progress of other students — who reported more fixed mindset in classrooms showed a significantly positive effect on math grades.
Successfully teaching a growth mindset to students lifted math grades overall, but this was not enough for all students to reap the benefits of a growth-mindset intervention. Supportive classroom contexts also mattered. Students who were in classrooms with teachers who approved of more of a fixed mindset did not show gains in their math grades over ninth grade, whereas the same kind of students in classrooms with more growth-mind set teachers showed meaningful gains.
In general, they view the testing and understanding of the causal effect of teacher mindset as the next step for mindset science. Such research will be challenging to carry out, however.
8. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A. How a student’s growth-mindset is inspired.
B. Why a teacher’s growth mindset is important.
C. How mistakes turn into learning opportunities.
D. Why a student continues acting on growth mindset.
9. What can we learn from the study on ninth-grade students?
A. Students were unable to overcome maths challenge.
B. The positive effect was concentrated on all students.
C. The sample size of the experiment was insufficient.
D. Students at baseline were influenced considerably.
10. What can we know about the teachers’ mindset, in the growth-mindset intervention?
A. It has an influence on the effectiveness
B. It is determined by supportive classroom
C. It always brings meaningful gains to students
D. It plays a decisive role in students’ significant gains
11. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. The Academic Performance: The Influence of Students’ Mindset
B. Students’ Learning Motivation: The Impact of Teachers’ Mindset
C. Encouraging a Growth Mindset: The Role of Teachers
D. Fixed and Growth Mindset: Their Relationship and Impact
D
Digital technology, ranging from smartphones and laptops to learning apps and AI tools, can actually help students with their studies and daily lives. However, addiction to it leads to many harmful effects. As a result, students become less focused, sleep less, exercise less, and lose their ability to learn independently. Importantly, these problems come from how the technology is used, not from the technology itself.
Unregulated technology use greatly lowers students’ learning efficiency (效率) and quality. Classroom distraction (干扰) stands out as the most common issue. According to a research from Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development PISA research, 30 percent of students get distracted by digital devices during most math lessons, which leads to poorer academic performance. To make matters worse, many students depend heavily on online search results and AI answers. They abandon key steps for deep learning, including careful reading, independent thinking, problem analysis (分析) and mistake correction. As a result, although their homework appears finished, they fail to build solid, in-depth knowledge.
According to a 2025 Centers for Disease Control (CDC) report, too much screen time does great harm to teenagers’ physical and mental health. Late-night gaming and social media use can seriously affect teenagers’ sleep. Meanwhile, long hours of screen use takes up time for outdoor sports, walking and daily exercise, leaving students in poor physical condition. In addition, social media makes teenagers compare with others, causing mental pressure. A 2025 CDC analysis also proves that too much non-school screen time is closely associated with teenagers’ poor sleep, lack of exercise and negative mental states.
Thankfully, students can avoid these risks by developing scientific daily routines. Before studying, they need to keep phones away from desks, turn off distracting notifications and use only necessary digital tools. Before bedtime, they should quit all online entertainment by a fixed time and charge their phones outside the bedroom. It is also advisable to finish exercise and housework before enjoying screen time. Instead of refusing technology completely, proper management enables technology to better support students’ learning and healthy growth.
12. What does the underlined word “unregulated” mean in paragraph 2?
A. Unprotected. B. Unfinished. C. Uncontrolled. D. Unchanged.
13. What can we infer from the 2025 CDC analysis?
A. Staying up late mainly leads to poor health.
B. Outdoor exercise removes screen-caused harms.
C. Social media use lowers teenagers’ mental stress.
D. Off-school screen time brings about health problems.
14. What are students advised to do?
A. Get exercise and housework done before screen use.
B. Avoid using digital products in the daytime.
C. Master useful ways to protect digital tools.
D. Do physical exercise while surfing online.
15. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Digital tools are widely used in teens’ study. B. Proper digital use brings teens great benefits.
C. Long screen time harms teens’ bodies and minds. D. Digital technology brings harm yet solutions exist.
