In August 2026, a heart-warming reunion (重聚) took place in the Mu Us Desert in Inner Mongolia. Yin Yuzhen, a Chinese farmer known for fighting desertification (沙漠化) , met Ronald Sakolsky, an American retired teacher, after 26 years apart. Their friendship began in 1999. Sakolsky, then teaching in China, saw Yin’s story on TV and was moved to tears. He raised $5,000 to help her plant trees in the desert. However, they did not get to meet each other face to face until the following year.
Over the years, Yin and her husband planted more than 50,000 trees with the money. The trees turned the sandy land into a forest. Yin named the forest “Saikaosi Forest” and put up a brick with his name on it. But she never forgot the American teacher who had helped her. In May 2026, she made a video and asked the internet to help find him. Within 48 hours, millions of people across China joined the search. They found Sakolsky and reconnected the two friends online.
Three months later, Sakolsky came back to China. On August 24, he and Yin stood together again in the forest. The small tree they had planted together 26 years ago was now over 10 meters tall. They planted a new tree together to mark their friendship. Sakolsky wrote “S” and “YIN” on a new stone monument, with a tree and a heart between them. He said, “This is a story written in Hollywood, not a reality. But we are experiencing this magnificent moment.”
Their reunion was not just about trees. Sakolsky also visited Luoyang, where he had taught in 1999. He met his former students, some of whom had become professors, doctors, and business people. He said, “Teachers plant a seed in students’ hearts. That seed grows into a tree and then a forest.” He added, “If a simple teacher and a simple desert lady can create this forest, imagine what more people can do together.”
When Sakolsky left China on September 1, he and Yin hugged tightly at the airport. Both had tears in their eyes. He said, “Any act of kindness, no matter how small, will never be wasted.” Their story shows that friendship and kindness can cross oceans and time. As Sakolsky once said, “Chinese people and American people can be one family.”

Do you know World Wetlands Day? It falls on February 2nd every year and we welcomed the 29th World Wetlands Day this year, with the theme (主题) Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future.
Wetlands are areas where water covers the soil or is present either at or near the surface of the soil for different periods during the year. They are really important for a large number of reasons that you might not realize.
Wetlands, along with oceans and forests, are known as the three major ecosystems of the Earth. There are different types of wetlands. We have got things like rivers, ponds and lakes. And wetlands support various wildlife. As a matter of fact, 50% of the world’s plants and animals depend on wetlands.
Wetlands act like sponges (海绵), soaking up (吸收) water and also carbon from the air. The plants in wetlands soak up climate-changing gases as they grow. Then when the plants die, they sink into mud, catching carbon instead of letting it all returning to the air. This can help to reduce the greenhouse effect.
Wetlands also play an important role in the water cycle. They can store lots of water during heavy rainfall, reducing floods (洪水) in downstream areas. Then the water will flow back into rivers and streams slowly.
Unfortunately, we have actually lost nearly 90% of the wetlands in the last 100 years, three times faster than forests. Do you know why? It’s things like pollution, climate change and human activities. Wetlands are important to everything, and we need to take actions to protect them.
31. How does the writer lead in the topic?
A. By comparing. B. By asking a question. C. By telling a story. D. By giving an example.
32. Which picture shows the function of wetlands mentioned in Paragraph 3?
A. B. C. D.
33. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Mud. B. Air. C. Water. D. Carbon.
34. What’s the best title of the text?
A. A Climate Hero B. A Polluted Planet C. The Home for Wildlife D. The Guard of the Earth
35. What might the writer continue talking about?
A. The types of wetlands. B. The functions of wetlands. C. The protection of wetlands. D. The importance of wetlands.

Amazing Changes of Our Motherland
Since the reform and opening-up, amazing changes have taken place in our motherland.
In the past, only low old houses stood here. Now plenty of tall buildings have sprung up in our hometown. What’s more, transportation has become far more convenient. Narrow and rough roads have given way to wide and smooth streets. High-speed trains and planes help us travel quickly. Moreover, great progress has also been made in communication. We no longer depend on letters. Thanks to smartphones and 5G, we can make video calls to others anytime. Last but not least, our life becomes much happier. We enjoy delicious food and varied leisure activities.
I take pride in these changes and hope our motherland will become better.
