Students learn their lessons in class. They sit in the classroom listening to the teacher. This is a way of learning. Is this the only way to learn? Of course not. There is another way to learn.
Every student can teach himself or herself, and every student is teaching himself or herself while he or she is learning something. And it is not a difficult way.
How do you teach yourself? Here are some steps for you. The first thing you must do is read. Read something you are interested in. The second is that you must ask yourself questions. The questions are something you don’t know, or something you want to know more about. A clever student is usually good at asking questions. Youdian Village, which is hundreds of years old, is a beautiful tourist attraction in Jiangxi Province. Visitors can see amazing ancient houses dating back to the Ming and Qing dynasties. Nearby, a clear blue lake offers fantastic views, and visitors can enjoy different lakeside activities on the hillside.
▲ Fallen trees blocked the roads, old houses were in poor condition, and the lake area was just an abandoned open-pit (露天开采的) mine. No plants grew there because of too much mining. “The soil was so poor that even small trees could not grow well,” said Mi Xiulan, a local official.
Things began to change when China started focusing on rural revitalization In 2018, a programme saved over 1,000 ancient buildings here. Villager Hu Liang’s ancestral home (祖居) was fixed for free. He now rents (出租) it to a company for 2,000 yuan a year. Since 2023, the local government has been turning the old mine sites into a beautiful lake. Plants are growing around the lake.
The village now has new attractions: meals in ancient houses, an underwater book house, a lakeside cafe, and a traditional Chinese medicine experience centre. Better environment and fun activities had brought over 100,000 tourists by October, 2025.
Now, young people like Hu Liang are returning home. He came back from Xiamen and started working as a village baker, making about 6,000 yuan per month. “I plan to set up my own business here,” he said. The village has a bright future ahead.
19.Which is the best to put in “▲” in the second paragraph?
A.But a few years ago, the village was different.

C.People here were very poor.
20.Which is one of the changes in Youdian Village?
A.The old mine has become a blue lake with plants around.
B.Fewer tourists come because of the mining.
C.All of the young people have returned to the village.
21.How much money can Hu Liang make by baking every year?
A.About 100,000 yuan. B.About 72,000 yuan. C.About 60,000 yuan.
22.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Ancient Houses in Youdian Village
B.Changes in Youdian Village
C.Mining Problems in Youdian Village

Xu Beihong was a pioneer of the 20th-century Chinese art, well-known for his traditional ink-and-wash paintings of horses and birds. He was one of the first Chinese artists to explore the techniques of oil painting.
Born in 1895 in Yixing, Jiangsu, Xu Beihong showed strong interest in arts since childhood. He began studying the Chinese Classics from his father when he was six. Xu spent much time helping out on his family’s farm. He would paint what he noticed in nature. In 1912, his father fell ill. Xu became the breadwinner of the family and began teaching arts in all kinds of schools. In 1917, he began to teach at Peking University at the invitation of Cai Yuanpei.
Beginning in 1919, Xu studied oil painting and drawing in Paris. His travels around Europe allowed him to explore Western art techniques. He studied the bone structure (骨架) and movement of horses. Such knowledge is clear in his works. But his excellent ink brushwork truly brought his horses to life.
In 1923, Xu’s oil painting was shown at the French National Art Exhibition. Later, he received invitations from many European cities to hold exhibitions internationally.
After returning home in 1927, Xu took an active part in art education. He focused on developing creativity with students. He also encouraged his students to learn from foreign artworks.“There is no other way to learn art, but to keep practicing,” Xu once said.
In 1933, Xu organized an exhibition of modern Chinese painting in Paris. It attracted lots of attention and was then shown in Belgium, Milan, Moscow, and other places. Grace knew she needed to talk to her teacher, Mrs Wilson. She was having trouble with her schoolwork, and it was mostly because she kept forgetting things. After class, Grace walked into Mrs Wilson’s office.
“I know I performed poorly on the exam today,” Grace said. “I could have done a lot better.”
“Why did this happen?” Mrs Wilson asked. “I forgot we would have an exam today. That often happens because I have so many things to do, and it is really hard for me to keep everything organized.”
“What other things?” Mrs Wilson wanted to know. “Well, I take piano lessons. I also write articles for the school newspaper. And I want to have fun with my friends too.”
“It sounds like you’re busy, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get organized. You need to manage your time better,” Mrs Wilson said. Grace sighed (叹气) and didn’t know how to do that.
Mrs Wilson said, “You can begin getting organized by getting a calendar. If you get a large calendar, you can write down everything you need to do on it. Then every day, you can check your calendar to see what’s on your schedule (日程). If you know you have an exam, you can study hard. That way, you’ll be prepared for the exam, and you’ll still have time for other things.”
“Thanks, Mrs Wilson,” Grace smiled.

Last Sunday, I experienced a common memory problem. I drove to the shopping centre, parked, and walked inside. The moment I passed through the doors, I stopped. I had completely forgotten why I was there. I stood in the busy street, with my mind a complete 36 . This wasn’t the first time. I decided it was time to 37 this problem seriously.
I found a quiet corner in a café and searched online. I learned that our working memory has limited 38 , like a small basket. It can only hold so much at once. To remember more, you need to move things to long-term memory. A useful 39 is “chunking”—grouping different information together. For example, it’s easier to 40 the number sequence 14921663 if you see it as 1492 and 1663, two important historical years.
Excited, I wanted to 41 this method right away. My chance came when my grandfather asked me to help him 42 his old stamp collection. There were hundreds, from all over the world. I felt worried. Then, I remembered chunking. I didn’t try to remember each stamp. Instead, I 43 them by colour and then by country. The red ones from England, the blue ones from France… Suddenly, the task seemed possible. I was 44 in the information, not just seeing it.
This small success changed my 45 . I started using the idea elsewhere. When learning a list of words, I would 46 words with similar meanings. I also learned that stress is bad for memory. A calm mind, like a 47 lake, shows information clearly. If I am in a hurry, I will take a deep breath first. 48 , before I leave home, I recall my keys, wallet, and phone. I haven’t had such a bad moment since.
Memory isn’t about 49 forgetting. It’s about developing good 50 to find what you’ve stored. That day at the mall, I finally remembered I needed batteries. More importantly, I found a way to better manage my own mind, and that was the real find.

根据前句“I had completely forgotten why I was there.”
根据前句“This wasn’t the first time.”
根据后文形象的比喻“like a small basket. It can only hold so much at once”可知,小篮子一次能装的容量有限,对应短时工作记忆容量的局限性,短语limited space意为“有限的空间/容量”,应选用名词space。
根据前句“To remember more, you need to…”
根据空前的形容词“Excited”以及后文“My chance came when my grandfather asked me to help him…”
根据后文“There were hundreds, from all over the world. I felt worried.”
根据后文“The red ones from England, the blue ones from France…”
根据后文“I started using the idea elsewhere.”
根据空后的具体生活习惯“before I leave home, I recall my keys…”以及后文“I haven’t had such a bad moment since.”
根据后句的转折对照“It’s about developing good…to find what you’ve stored.”

Dear Mary,
I’m sorry to hear you have trouble remembering English words. Here is some advice.
First, connect each word with a picture or a short funny story—our brain remembers images far better than plain letters. Second, don’t cram (死记). Try to review a few words each day and repeat them often, because repetition builds memory paths. Third, use new words in your own sentences, so they gain real meaning. Finally, you can keep a good mood and get enough sleep every day, since a relaxed brain remembers things much better.
Try these and you’ll see progress soon!
Yours,
Li Hua
