Factors Behind Excellence
Good morning, everyone.
Today I’d like to share my insights into factors behind excellence. From my perspective, determination ranks first, followed by opportunity and talent.
It is determination that drives us to forge ahead through all kinds of hardships. Without a strong will, we could barely make the most of opportunities that come our way. As for talent, it is merely a natural advantage and can never guarantee success by itself.
This insight inspires me to strengthen my own willpower. In my daily schoolwork, I will stay persistent whenever I am faced with obstacles. After all, great achievements rarely come without constant efforts. Thank you!
第二节 读后续写
The coalition soon worked well to care for the puppies. Volunteers were quickly divided into small groups, each taking responsibility for feeding, cleaning or comforting the puppies. Chace, still in his uniform, coordinated their efforts while gently holding a puppy in one arm. They set up a feeding schedule and assigned specific tasks to each volunteer, working around the clock tirelessly. Despite their exhaustion, no one complained, because every whimper from the puppies tugged at their heartstrings. One of the puppies, a little blond one, nuzzled against Natalie’s hand, and gentle laughter filled the room.
Gradually, the puppies recovered under everyone’s kind care. The puppies, once too weak to stand, now wobbled on their little legs, their eyes growing brighter and tiny barks growing louder. A healthy shine appeared in their fur. Looking around at the smiling faces, Hannah realized that what had started as a burden had become the most beautiful gift. The coalition members gathered for a group photo, with the healthy, playful puppies in their arms, a permanent reminder of how strangers became friends. Holding hands, Chace and Hannah watched the lively scene, knowing that kindness had created a ripple effect.

W: Did you talk to the shop owner to see if he could give back your money?
M: I’ve tried that, but he said he didn’t own the machine. Maybe we can rock the machine until the box falls.

M: Why do you have to work so hard?
W: I’m planning to start a school. It will cost a lot, so I’m trying to save as much money as possible.
M: What kind of school?
W: A music school for disabled children. I think they have the right to receive education just like normal children. At the moment there are very few such schools in my country.
M: It’s a great idea, and I’m sure your dream will come true. Well, thank you for this talk. It makes me realize I should also try my best to make a difference to this world.
Text 10
W: On May 27th, 2021, my family visited the Lake Eyasi area. No bus or train could take us there, so we drove all the way there. The Hadzapi are one of the few remaining traditional hunter gatherer groups left in the world. When you visit them, they are not putting on a show. This is the real thing! We went to that area mainly because we were curious about how this group live. First we picked up a guide in a nearby village. Researchers from around the world visit and study the Hadzapi, and our guide went with them in the past and spent 6 months living with the bushmen. So this guide was familiar with the group and their language. When you visit the Hadzapi, you observe them as they go about their daily lives. They hunt daily using traditional hunting tools. They make fire by rubbing sticks together. In the dry season they don’t bother building huts to live in. They live the way I imagine people lived thousands of years ago. Watching them live was truly an amazing experience.

Eight-year-old Kyle had a terrible day at school because his teacher blamed him publicly for failing to finish his math homework.
Kyle was never good at math, and he had once told his mom, Amanda, that he could hardly follow the teacher in class. Therefore, Amanda offered to get him a private teacher. Afraid extra guidance would cut into his evening playtime, Kyle promised to make an effort to learn math on his own.
Still, his grades continued to fall, and he had difficulty working out even basic math problems. “I hate it! I don’t want to attend school!” he thought, tears streaming down his face.
“Kyle? What’s wrong, dear?” Kyle looked up, only to find his next-door neighbor, 80-year-old Mrs. Bennet sitting in a wheelchair. She patted his shoulder and gave him a comforting smile. “I used to be a math teacher. Let me help you .”
From then on, they spent two hours daily on math. Mrs. Bennet taught Kyle math and helped him with his homework. Gradually Kyle grew fond of the subject, for Mrs. Bennet had fascinating methods to make math extraordinarily interesting.
One day Mrs. Bennet did not show up for their regular lesson. Worried, Kyle dropped by her home and found her suffering from a high fever and a bad cold, coughing non-stop. Mrs. Bennet apologized for being unable to give him lessons for the time being.
Amanda soon prepared chicken soup for Mrs. Bennet. The old lady was in tears upon receiving it and hugged Kyle. “Thank you very much, son. Please convey my gratitude to your mother as well.”
Afterwards, Kyle delivered hot soup and dinner to Mrs. Bennet every day until she recovered fully. It was not long before their math lessons were back on schedule.
24. Why did Kyle refuse Amanda’s offer of a private teacher?
A. He worried it would be too expensive.
B. He thought he could make progress by himself.
C. He feared extra study would take up his playtime.
D. He thought no suitable teacher could be available.
25. What contributed to Kyle’s change in attitude towards math?
A. His long-term hard work. B. His mother’s continuous support.
C. His school teacher’s encouraging remarks. D. Mrs. Bennet’s unique teaching approaches.
26. What can we infer about Kyle from the story?
A. He cared about his helper.
B. He lost interest in school later.
C. He thought his teacher was unfair.
D. He became good at difficult math problems.
27. What message does the story intend to convey?
A. Kindness can be passed and repaid in return.
B. One should never give up in face of difficulties.
C. Encouragement is the key to children’s progress.
D. Family support matters most to teenagers’ growth.

Head lice (虱子) are considered an annoyance but there’s more to lice than their removal. These pests have been stowaways (偷渡者) on our heads for so long that their DNA has recorded human history.
Ascunce, an evolutionary geneticist, says lice help answer human history questions we can’t answer with human DNA alone. In a new PLOS One study, she and her colleagues present evidence that head lice DNA has recorded large-scale human migrations (迁徙) that led to the settlement of the Americas.
In the early 2010s, as a Florida Museum of Natural History researcher, she explored what lice and their DNA revealed about our past. After analyzing lice DNA, she and her colleagues found further evidence that lice acted as mini recorders of human history. Specifically, they identified two distinct genetic groups among human head lice, suggesting human head lice arrived in the Americas twice. “We humans, we migrate and we take the lice with us,” she summarizes.
Alejandra Perotti, a biologist at the University of Reading who didn’t take part in the study, says the research approach is solid. Yet she argues the team lacks lice samples from across the globe to paint a full picture of lice diversity, which matters for understanding large-scale human movement over centuries. “If you look at the data they gather,” she notes, “some regions, like Africa, have only one lice sample. There’s a sampling size issue.”
Future work will correct this data gap. And Ascunce’s team plans to look for signals in our head lice of ancient interactions between our human ancestors and Neanderthals who would have carried their own lice as well. These interactions would have included “any type of close contact from sharing sleeping sites to fights to interbreeding (杂交).” she says.
28. What does the PLOS One study reveal about head lice?
A. They caused large-scale human migrations.
B. They have existed on human heads for long.
C. They have spread to many regions across the world.
D. They offered evidence for human settlement in the Americas.
29. What limitation of the study does Alejandra Perotti point out?
A. Insufficient global lice samples. B. Limited sampling size in Africa.
C. Weak explanation of human migration. D. Incomplete knowledge of human-migration patterns.
30. What is the main focus of the future research planned by Ascunce’s team?
A. Understanding lice diversity and human migration.
B. Investigating Neanderthals’ sleeping sites with lice.
C. Filling the data gap and studying lice-related interactions.
D. Studying the link between Neanderthals and human ancestors.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Historical Clues Hidden in Lice DNA.
B. Studies on the Genetic Diversity of Head Lice.
C. Head Lice’s Key Part in Early Human Migrations.
D. New Findings About Human-Neanderthal Interactions.

From high school to university, teachers are rejecting classroom tech that enables cheating and causes distraction (分心). Laura Lomas, a literature professor, now sets oral presentations rather than more AI-friendly PowerPoints. Justin Reich, director of the MIT Teaching Systems Lab, says his daughter’s middle school has “more or less given up on setting homework other than math.” Students are told to read instead.
Such retrenchments are likely to keep spreading. In a 2023 survey, 66% of high-school and college instructors said they were changing tasks because of ChatGPT, of those changing, 76% required or planned to require handwritten work. And 87% said they require or plan to add an oral presentation.
The battle for and against classroom tech in America is spreading in other rich countries. The reason is not just ChatGPT and the mass cheating it makes possible. Teachers are worried about mass distraction as well. In 2025, 56% of educators said laptops, tablets or desktops are a major source of diverted attention.
By contrast, the benefits handwriting offers for cognition are gaining new respect. A computer science teacher at Hunter College High School recently restarted handwriting for coding tasks because it helps with memory and critical thinking.
But not everyone who wants to go old-school can. And Derek Vaillant, a history professor, says that while there is an agreement that teachers need to “get back to basics” by prioritizing original, in-person, pen-and-paper exams, large public universities are not providing resources matching with the challenge by hiring enough teaching assistants.
The changes require rethinking the purpose of time in the classroom. At Hunter, an 11th-grade English teacher set five literature responses to be written by hand, each taking up a whole period. In the past that was not considered a good use of a teacher’s effort. But today, with digital distractions taking up attention, “maybe the best thing we can do in the classroom is give young people the gift of quiet, undistracted time.”
32. What does “retrenchments” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Moves away from digital tools. B. Budget cuts in education funding.
C. Efforts to hire more teaching staff. D. Plans to upgrade classroom technology.
33. Why is handwriting gaining new respect according to the text?
A. It reduces teachers’ workload. B. It improves reading performance.
C. It helps with memory and thinking. D. It makes coding assignments easier.
34. Which phrase best describes the turn in classroom teaching approaches?
A. Tech-heavy and modern. B. Old-school but effective.

In today’s world, many people like to criticize others while rarely taking responsibility for their own behavior. If you have to deal with such a person, there is a simple way to minimize the impact of their negative words. 36
First, come up with a short positive statement reminding yourself of your positive qualities. Write it down to help you remember. The idea is that you can give yourself such a statement anywhere, at any time. 37 Do not weaken it by comparing yourself to someone else or including any negative words. For example: "I can get through this. I’ve done it before. ” “I’m a good student. No one has to be perfect.” “I’m good at managing my emotions and don’t have to react right now.”
Second, practice saying this to yourself regularly. 38 Say it out loud a few times a day. If you know you are going into a situation where someone will criticize you, practice beforehand with a friend. Have them say the critical words while you silently repeat your affirmation (肯定话语). Do not practice longer than 30 to 60 seconds, as you want to build confidence without taking in the negative words. You are likely to find that your own encouraging words are stronger in your brain than the criticizing words.
39 Let your inner voice override the criticism. Try to keep a calm expression. After they finish, you can simply say, “I’ll have to think about that,” or give another calm response. 40 You will gain confidence and inner calm from the process.
A. Keep it simple, short, and purely positive.
B. Some people post it on their bathroom mirror.
C. Here are three steps to put this method into practice.
D. Repetition helps this positive message stick in your mind.
E. Third, in the real situation, silently repeat your affirmation.
F. It can keep others’ negative remarks from hurting you deeply.
G. Critics often respond well when you defend your position calmly.

One evening, Chace, a policeman, went to check an old empty apartment building in southwest Little Rock, Arkansas, after receiving a report of possible trespassing (入侵). There, he heard soft, weak cries coming from a group of lovely little puppies (幼犬).
In the corner of an empty room, Chace found eleven small puppies with light brown, lined and black fur. There was no mother dog or any person nearby, so these poor little dogs were surely left behind by others. He couldn’t leave them helpless in the empty building. He quickly found a box, placed all the puppies inside and took them home.
Chace immediately contacted the local animal shelter to report the found puppies, hoping their owner might come to look for them. Unfortunately, the center was totally full. It had no extra staff or supplies to care for these newborn puppies. They were too young to feed themselves and needed regular feeding to survive, so Chace gave up sending them there.
Chace shared the lovely puppies with his wife Hannah and the couple decided to take in these puppies for the time being. However, they had no experience of raising newborn puppies, and the work was far more difficult than they had imagined. After two days and nights of non-stop feeding, Hannah felt very tired and did not know what to do.
Realizing they were badly in need of help, Hannah turned to her sister Natalie Shelton, who worked at the animal rescue center. But the help was still not enough. Therefore, Hannah posted the puppies’ photos and their situation online to ask for public support.
She once feared that no one would give a hand quickly, but things turned out really well. Before long, warm-hearted strangers donated feeding tools, puppy food and free medical treatment. Many people messaged to offer support. With more and more people joining in, a neighborhood puppy care coalition (联盟) began to take shape.

(1)续写词数应为150个左右。
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The coalition soon worked well to care for the puppies.
Gradually, the puppies recovered under everyone’s kind care.
