A teenager stopped him from stealing — and he never forgot it
One day, his grandmother took him to the mall. As she waited for him on a bench, Miller went into the store Spencer's to look for a band T-shirt. He had developed a habit of kleptomania(盗窃癖), and when he found the Rage Against the Machine shirt he wanted, he decided to steal it.
"So I crouched down behind a clothing rack, and I started to roll up that T-shirt. And I was getting ready to stuff it in my pants," he said.
"As I was doing that, a teenage girl, probably just a couple of years older than me, crouched down beside me and whispered to me,“Don't do it, man. It's not worth it.”
She said it so only he could hear.
"The tone of her voice wasn't angry. It wasn't accusatory (指责的) . It was caring," Miller recalled. "Then she looked at me and she kept her eyes on me until I unrolled the T-shirt and folded it back up."
Miller stood up, took the folded shirt to the register (收银台) and paid for it. He rushed out of the store to meet his grandmother, still waiting on the bench. He never told anyone what had just happened inside.
Thirty years later, Miller says what might have happened. He continues to cherish that memory.
"I don't know who that teenage girl was. I don't know why she cared so much. All I know is that her quiet words kept me from making a terrible mistake."
Sometimes he replays that moment in his mind. He thinks about what might happen without the girl's help. He might have been caught and got into trouble with the police. This could send him along a totally different path in life. He believes the influence of that small event is profound.
24. What did Miller plan to do with the T-shirt at first?
A. To pay for it at the register.
B. To return it to the rack.
C. To give it to his grandmother.
D. To hide it in his pants.
25. What can be inferred (推断) about the girl from the way she stopped Miller?
A. She wanted to make him feel ashamed of stealing.
B. She was more worried about the shirt than about him.
C. She tried to correct him without making him feel judged.
D. She expected him to pay for the shirt immediately.
26. Why did Miller unroll and fold the T-shirt?
A. The girl was watching him.
B. He wanted to buy it.
C. He was afraid the girl would call the police.
D. He remembered his grandmother was waiting outside.
27. What does Miller think of the girl's words now?
A. Funny. B. Valuable. C. Strange. D. Common.

As floods get worse, Britain tries a new solution: beavers. (海狸)
Until two years ago, a train station in West London often flooded heavily in rainstorms. But in late 2023, a family of beavers moved into a nearby park. After that, the flooding problem was greatly eased.
Britain is known for light rain. However, climate change has made rain heavier and more unpredictable (不可预测的) . Floods have increased by nearly 50 percent over the past ten years. So scientists brought in beavers — nature's best flood engineers — for help.
The park was once a golf course with a small river. Within weeks, the beavers built dams (水坝) to form a pond. This held back water and stopped it from spilling into the city. They also turned the river into small streams and created a wetland(湿地). This wetland absorbs heavy rain and reduces flood risk. "They turned the area into a giant sponge (海绵) ," explained a project leader.
Besides flood control, the beavers have brought back other wildlife. This costs far less than man-made flood defenses. But the practice is not without controversy (争议) . In Scotland, beavers have spread to farmland, damaging crops and trees. The government (政府) pays for public land repair, but private farm losses are rarely covered. Some farmers have turned to beaver-watching tours for income.
Beaver reintroduction is part of a global trend. From the US to Europe, land managers see these natural engineers as a low-cost, sustainable (可持续的) solution to climate-related flooding.
28. Why did scientists bring beavers to West London?
A. For flood control. B. For tourism.
C. For a golf course. D. For farmland.
29.How do beavers help with the water problem?
A. By building dams. B. By absorbing (吸收) rain.
C. By stopping storms. D. By cleaning rivers.
30. What can be inferred about the farmers in Scotland?
A. They are forced to give up growing crops and trees.
B. They are not fully paid for the damage caused by beavers.
C. They are satisfied with the government's support for them.
D. They are moving their farms to other places to avoid beavers.
31. What is the main idea of the text?
A. A natural flood solution. B. A history of British floods.
C. A lesson from Scottish farmers. D. A trend (趋势) in city gardening.
D
Generative (生成的) AI tools are widely used by middle and high school students to finish homework. A new study reported by The Economist shows a surprising result: AI can lift homework grades but hurt exam performance, and top students suffer most.
Scientists from Stockholm University and the University of Hong Kong studied nearly 27,000 Chinese secondary students over 30 months. Students using AI got their homework scores up by 18 percent and cut homework time from 64 minutes to 45 minutes. On the surface, AI seemed to bring great progress.
However, when it came to closed-book (闭卷的) monthly exams, the picture changed. Six months later, these students'exam scores dropped by about 20 percent. Worse still, after around two years, their important high-school entrance exam scores fell by as much as 24 percent. What surprised researchers most was that high-achieving students (学霸) suffered the greatest learning loss. Top students who relied on AI lost more of their independent problem-solving ability than average students.
The finding has caused heated debate among schools, teachers and parents. Some schools choose to ban AI tools in homework, worrying that AI destroys students' thinking habits. Many parents hold different opinions. They believe AI can serve as a useful tutor (家庭教师) and help children learn at their own speed. Some teachers suggest setting clear rules for AI use instead of a complete ban.
Researchers explained that many students outsourced their homework to AI. They copied AI answers without thinking and lost the chance to practise problem-solving skills. The longer they relied on AI, the worse their final examination results became.
The study does not call for a total ban on AI. Instead, it reminds educators and students of a simple truth: learning needs active thinking and independent practice. AI may help with homework, but it cannot replace the brain's own training. The key is to treat AI as a learning helper rather than a homework substitute.
32. What did the new study find about students using AI?
A. They did better in monthly exams.
B. They spent less time on homework.
C. They took fewer high-school exams.
D. They got more help from teachers.
33. Why did top students suffer the greatest learning loss?
A. They copied AI answers directly.
B. They spent less time on homework. They spent less time on homework.
C. They practised problem-solving less.
D. They took fewer high-school exams.
34. What does the underlined word “outsourced” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Copied. B. Explained. C. Improved. D. Handed over.
35. What is the author's suggestion about AI use?
A. Students should stop using AI.
B. AI can replace the brain's training.
C. AI should be used as a helper.
D. AI should finish homework for students.

Inside the Bama Tea sightseeing factory in Anxi, Fujian province, visitors can watch fresh Tieguanyin tea leaves move through automated (自动化的) production lines. From fixation (杀青) and rolling (揉捻) to drying and packaging, the leaves travel across the smart facility without touching human hands.
Just a short walk away, the rhythm changes. Visitors can try the traditional shaking process by hand. 36 Tieguanyin is a classic oolong tea (乌龙茶) native to Anxi, known for its strong, lingering(持久)orchid fragrance.
Selected as one of Fujian's first cultural tourism destinations (目的地) , the facility combines a tea garden, smart production line and tea-making workshops in one space. 37 It offers a complete visitor journey: watching smart manufacturing, learning tea history, hands-on experience, tasting and souvenir shopping.
38 When Beijing issued its tea industry guidelines in February, the framework called for brand leadership, technological empowerment and market expansion.
"Young consumers are discovering tea differently," Wang Wenli said. "They don't start with a pot of tea. They start with a cup from a tea shop or a bottle from a convenience store. We need to be where they are." 39
However, challenges remain. In its latest financial report, Bama noted that revenue(收入) growth from offline channels was mainly driven by increased wholesale (批发)purchases from franchisees (加盟商) . 40 Wang remains focused on the broader vision. "To reach the top of the world, you must first lay a solid foundation," he said.
A. These products may not yet reach end consumers.
B. Visitors can enjoy both modern technology and tradition.
C. Bama is already doing so.
D. Local tea lovers have made it a popular stop.
E. This hands-on experience connects visitors with heritage(遗产).
F. Young people prefer coffee.
G. It is now reaching young consumers in new ways.

In August 2026, a Chinese cartoon film called Niu Lai did something strange. It was terrible, and everyone went to see it.
The film was made by two people: Xin Yumeng and his mother. They spent five years on it and used only about 200 dollars (美元) . Xin had no training. He taught himself.
When it came out on August 5, almost no one watched it. There was no poster and no ads. After ten days, it made only 7,000 yuan. It looked like a total failure.
But then something surprising happened. Clips from the film started appearing online. People shared funny scenes of its strange animals. Snakes looked like springs. Grass was yellow blocks. Leaves were simple balls.
Instead of turning people away, the bad animation made them curious. “A bad film isn't worth watching, but one that's really bad-I just have to see it,”one viewer said. People began going to cinemas as a joke. Watching Niu Lai became a social activity.
The name also helped. In Chinese, Niu Lai sounds like “the bull market is coming.”Many stock investors bought tickets for good luck.
By August 18, the film had made over 21 million yuan. A film that cost 200 dollars was making millions.
Not everyone was happy. The Beijing News warned that cinemas should not keep showing low-quality films. Some film workers felt upset, too.
But the film's fans had a different view. Many liked it because it was handmade, not made by AI. In a world full of “perfect” computer images, the film's rough look felt more human and real.
Xin said he just wanted to tell a story about family. He never expected this success. “I just wanted to finish it,”he said.

第四部分 写作 (共两节,满分25分)
第一节(满分15分)
Dear Mr. Wang,
I hope this email finds you well. It has been two months since I entered senior high school, and as I was clearing out my old notebooks the other day, I came across a comment you once wrote on my composition: "Keep writing. Your voice matters." Those few words, written so casually in red ink, have stayed with me far longer than you might ever have imagined, and they still give me strength whenever I feel lost or uncertain.
Since starting senior high, I have joined the school English newspaper. To my surprise, I have made many friends there, and writing has become a way for me to express myself. Whenever I feel discouraged, your words remind me that my voice is worth hearing. In the coming days, I will keep writing and never give up, just as you encouraged me to do.
Looking ahead, I know senior high will bring more challenges, but I am determined to keep writing and to let my voice be heard, just as you encouraged me to do. Thank you for believing in me when I did not yet believe in myself. I will always be grateful for that quiet, powerful comment you left in the margin of my notebook.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

One day,his grandmother took him to the mall.As she waited for him on a bench,Miller
went into the store Spencer's to look for a band T-shirt.He had developed a habit of kleptomania
(盗窃癖),and when he found the Rage Against the Machine shirt he wanted,he decided to
steal it.
"So I crouched down behind a clothing rack, and I started to roll up that T-shirt.And I was
getting ready to stuff it in my pants,"he said.
"As I was doing that,a teenage girl, probably just a couple of years older than me,crouched

As floods get worse,Britain tries a new solution:beavers.(
Until two years ago,a train station in West London often flooded heavily in rainstorms. But
in late 2023,a family of beavers moved into a nearby park. After that, the flooding problem was
greatly eased.
英语试题第4页(共10页)
Britain is known for light rain. However, climate change has made rain heavier and more
unpredictable(不可t预测的).Floods have increased by nearly50 percent over the past ten years.
So scientists brought in beavers-nature's best flood engineers-for help.
The park was once a golf course with a small river.Within weeks, the beavers built dams
(to form a pond. This held back water and stopped it from spilling into the city. They also
turned the river into small streams and created a wetland(
This wetland absorbs heavy rain and reduces flood risk."They
turned the area into a giant sponge(海绵),"explained a project
leader.
Besides flood control, the beavers have brought back other
wildlife. This costs far less than man-made flood defenses. But
the practice is not without controversy ()In Scotland,
beavers have spread to farmland, damaging crops and trees.
The government()pays for public land repair, but private farm losses are rarely covered.
Some farmers have turned to beaver-watching tours for income.
Beaver reintroduction is part of a global trend. From the US to Europe, land managers see
these natural engineers as a low-cost,sustainable(可持续的)solution to climate--related
flooding.
28.Why did scientists bring beavers to West London?
A.For flood control.
B.For tourism.
C.For a golf course.
D.For farmland.
29.How do beavers help with the water problem?
A.By building dams.
B.By absorbing(吸收)rain.
C.By stopping storms.
D.By cleaning rivers.
30.What can be inferred about the farmers in Scotland?
A.They are forced to give up growing crops and trees.
B.They are not fully paid for the damage caused by beavers.
C.They are satisfied with the government's support for them.
D.They are moving their farms to other places to avoid beavers.
31.What is the main idea of the text?
A.A natural flood solution.
B.Ahistory of British floods.
C.A lesson from Scottish farmers.D.A trend (in city gardening

Generative AI tools are widely used by middle and high school students to finish
homework.A new study reported by The Economist shows a surprising result:AI can lift
homework grades but hurt exam performance, and top students suffer most.
Scientists from Stockholm University and the University of Hong Kong studied nearly
27,000 Chinese secondary students over 30 months.Students using AI got their homework
scores up by 18 percent and cut homework time from 64 minutes to 45 minutes. On the surface,
AI seemed to bring great progress.
However,when it came to closed-book(闭卷的)monthly exams,the picture changed.Siⅸ
months later,these students'exam scores dropped by about 20 percent.Worse still,after around
two years, their important high-school entrance exam scores fell by as much as 24 percent. What
surprised researchers most was that high-achieving students (suffered the greatest learning
loss.Top students who relied on AI lost more of their independent problem-solving ability than
average students.
The finding has caused heated debate among schools, teachers and parents. Some schools
choose to ban AI tools in homework, worrying that AI destroys students'thinking habits. Many
英语试题第5页(共10页)
parents hold different opinions. They believe AI can serve as a useful tutor (and help
children learn at their own speed. Some teachers suggest setting clear rules for AI use instead of
a complete ban.
Researchers explained that many students outsourced their homework to AI.They copied
AI answers without thinking and lost the chance to practise problem-solving skills. The longer
they relied on AI,the worse their final examination results became.
The study does not call for a total ban on AI.Instead,it reminds educators and students of a
simple truth:leaming needs active thinking and independent practice.AI may help with
homework, but it cannot replace the brain's own training. The key is to treat AI as a learning
helper rather than a homework substitute.
32.What did the new study find about students using AI?
A.They did better in monthly exams.
B.They spent less time on homework
C.They took fewer high-school exams.
D.They got more help from teachers.
33.Why did top students suffer the greatest learning loss?
A.They copied AI answers directly.
B.They spent less time on homework. They spent less time on homework.
C.They practised problem-solving less.
D.They took fewer high-school exams.
34.What does the underlined word "outsourced'in paragraph 5 mean?
A.Copied.
B.Explained.
C.Improved.
D.Handed over.
35.What is the author's suggestion about AI use?
A.Students should stop using AI.
B.AI can replace the brain's training.
C.AI should be used as a helper.
D.AI should finish homework for students.
