My father never learned to say"I love you. " Instead, he spoke the language of broken things.
For thirty years he ran a small repair shop at the corner of Bridge Street. Lamps, clocks, radios— people brought him whatever the modern world had given up on. In an age when anything broken is thrown away and replaced, his little shop looked like a museum of patience.
As a teenager,I was ashamed of it. My classmates' parents were doctors, engineers, managers. When teachers asked about our families, I said vaguely that my father" worked with electronics. " The smell of machine oil on his jacket embarrassed me. Once, he appeared at my school gate with a repaired umbrella just as a heavy rain began. I took it without a word of thanks and hurried away, pretending not to know him. He never mentioned it afterwards.
The year I turned twenty-six, my father had a stroke. The shop was shut, and its keys lay in a drawer. One quiet afternoon, while sorting out his things, I found a wooden box under the counter. Inside were dozens of tiny paper slips, each carefully labeled in his handwriting: " Fan,Mrs. Chen, no charge— her son is ill. "" Watch, young Mr. Zhao, no charge— student. " " Radio, the old lady opposite, no charge— lives alone. "A lifetime of quiet, unpaid kindnesses, folded and kept like treasure.
I reopened the shop the following spring. At first, customers came out of memory, then out of curiosity, and finally out of real need. Now, when a child brings me a toy with a missing wheel, or an old man handsover a watch that stopped decades ago, I understand what my father had been repairing all those years. It was never really about the clocks and the lamps.
Last month, a woman my age came in with a broken music box. Seeing her family name on the waiting list, I wrote on the slip:" No charge— my father would have wanted it that way." The words felt strange and familiar at once, like a language I had once refused to learn and finally made my own.
24. Why did the author feel ashamed of the shop as a teenager?
A. It brought in little money.
B. It seemed humble next to classmates' parents' jobs.
C. His father spent too much time there.
D. It was full of broken things.
25. Why did the author hurry away when his father brought the umbrella?
A. He was annoyed by the heavy rain. B. He blamed his father for being late.
C. He didn't want to be seen with his father. D. He was in a hurry to return home.
26. What do the paper slips in the wooden box reveal about the father?
A. He was careless with money. B. He kept records of every repair.
C. He had a poor memory for names. D. He quietly helped people in hardship.
27. Which of the following best explains" It was never really about the clocks and the lamps"?
A. Repair work was too simple for his skills.
B. The shop's true business was healing people, not objects.
C. The antiques in the shop were beyond price.
D. Clocks and lamps were not what customers needed.

Have you ever spent hours typing notes on a laptop in class, only to find you remember little afterwards? A growing body of research suggests that writing notes by hand may be far more effective for learning.
In a well-known study, researchers divided college students into two groups. One group took notes on laptops, while the other wrote by hand. Although the laptop users typed more words, the hand writers performed much better when answering conceptual questions, such as" How do the ideas compare?"
Why does this happen? Scientists believe there are two main reasons. First, handwriting is slower, so students cannot copy everything the teacher says. Instead, they are forced to summarize the key points in their own words, and this process of selection and reorganization deepens understanding. Second, the movement of the pen on paper creates a stronger ' motor memory", which helps the brain store and recall information.
Typing, by contrast, allows students to record lectures word for word without thinking much. As a result, information enters the brain but is seldom processed deeply—a bit like saving a file without ever opening it.
This doesn't mean laptops are useless in class. For subjects that require lots of exact details or for students with certain physical difficulties, typing can be helpful. The key, researchers say,is not the tool itself but how the brain engages with the material.
So next time you prepare your schoolbag, think twice before leaving your notebook behind.Picking up a pen may be the simplest way to make your study time really count
28. What did the study find about hand writers?
A. They typed more words. B. They did better in conceptual questions.

29. Why does handwriting deepen understanding according to the text?
A. It helps students copy everything. B. It allows faster note-taking.
C. It requires summarizing key points. D. It saves the teacher's time.
30. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The disadvantage of typing. B. The history of note-taking.
C. The design of laptops. D. The speed of writing.
31. What is the author's suggestion in the last paragraph?
A. Give up laptops completely. B. Take notes by hand when possible.
C. Buy a better laptop. D. Spend more time in class.

Early in the morning, birds sing in almost every city park. However, scientists have discovered that city birds do not sing in quite the same way as their country cousins. In noisy urban environments, many birds have learned to change their songs.
Studies carried out in several European cities show that great tits, a common small songbird, sing at a higher pitch in cities than in forests. This is because low-frequency sounds are easily covered by the noise of traffic, so raising the pitch helps their songs stand out. Some birds also sing faster, or at quieter hours such as dawn and dusk, when the streets are less noisy.
These changes show the amazing ability of animals to adapt to a changing world. However, scientists warn that noise pollution is not harmless. If a bird's song cannot be heard, it may fail to attract a mate or defend its territory. Over time, this could lead to a drop in bird numbers in cities. The good news is that cities can do a lot to help. Planting more trees along streets not only provides food and nesting places but also works as a natural sound barrier. Some European cities have built"quiet areas" in parks, where traffic is limited and birds can communicate more easily. In addition, reducing night-time lighting helps birds rest better.
Interestingly, protecting urban birds brings benefits to people as well. Birds歌 has been proven to reduce stress and improve people's mood. A morning walk in a park full of birds may do more good than we realize.
So the next time you hear birds singing above the noise of the city, take a moment to listen.Their songs are not just beautiful— they are also a message about how nature and humans can live together.
32. How do great tits change their songs in cities?
A They sing at a lower pitch. B. They sing at a higher pitch.
C. They stop singing in the morning. D. They sing only at noon.
33. What may happen if a bird's song is covered by noise?
A. It may fail to find a mate. B. It may leave the city at once.
C. It may sing much louder. D. It may change its food.
34. How can trees help city birds?
A. They provide quiet places for cars. B. They offer food, nests and block noise.
C. They make the air cooler in summer. D. They attract more visitors to parks.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. The History of Bird Studies B. Noise Pollution in European Cities
