My mother, my brother and I used to volunteer at our local food bank to hand out food. I learnt quickly that TV shows don’t show what poverty (贫穷) and hunger are really like in real life. I had been made to believe that hunger only happens in the poorest corners of the world, far from where I live. Unluckily, that is simply not the case. As Feeding America reports, over 47 million people in the US face hunger, including one in every five children.
In 2024, I had the chance to visit the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley, a member of the Feeding America network, in McAllen, Texas. I worked with some volunteers to send holiday meals to families in need. This experience impressed me a lot. It allowed me to get close to those in need. With each food box we sent and each “thank you” we heard, I felt connected to the McAllen community in a way that I had never thought possible.
Meeting families who were living in small self-made homes, each with up to ten children and adults, showed me the meaning of resilience (坚韧). Although they were in challenging situations, the children remained joyful and hopeful. I still can’t get it out of my head now.
Nowadays many people spend lots of time helping others as volunteers. However, there is still so much to be done to end hunger. I hope we all do our best to support organizations like Feeding America that are trying to make a difference in communities across the country.
