One hit of my stick, and the buffalo (水牛) moved forward. I guided them along the road, through the heart of the village. We walked past mud homes and villagers working on their crops. This was life in a small village in Sindh, Pakistan.
Months flew by as I watched over the buffalo daily until Uncle visited. “Brother, you must send Rasool Bux to school. Herding buffalo is not in his future,” Uncle said. My father was persuaded (被说服) finally. The following week, I started primary school. By the end of the year, I was among the top students in the school and decided to study at a university in Karachi, a big city over 150 kilometers away. “Look at this guy! He will go to study in Karachi?” My classmates laughed and made jokes.
The challenges life set before me didn’t stop my dream. I turned to writing as a way out. I got published and won competitions, gaining praise and confidence to keep moving forward.
I began college studies when I was hit with another difficulty. My father couldn’t afford my further education. I decided to find a part-time job. My handwriting was good, and I had developed a passion for it, so I tried my luck with a leading daily newspaper.
One fine day, I took a bus to Hyderabad alone, a city that lay fifty kilometers from my village. Guided by kind strangers, I showed my handwriting skills at the newspaper’s office and was offered an internship (实习) with pay. This was one of the happiest days of my life.
Within a year, under the guidance of senior calligraphers, my skills improved, along with a good salary. Many instructors helped me realize my dreams, leading to an editorial position, advertising work, and the most wonderful moment of all, an MBA in marketing and advertising from a Karachi university.
Now, when I reflect on the laughter and doubtful glances of the village students, their opinions hold no weight. What truly matters is that I followed the dreams and struggled for them. Just as I guided the buffalo with my stick, I went through challenges and hardships, guiding my life’s course.

Students in Camarillo high school are getting a real hands-on (实际操作的) education, thanks to an unusual farm program. They aren’t just learning about farm animals. They’re raising them! This is the only high school in the country that raises its own animals on campus.
Addisyn Bolles has been feeding the Great Hambino — her 202-pound pig in person since it was a baby pig. “I’ve learned a lot from this program. Caring for this animal makes me responsible for another life, and this experience helps prepare me for life in many ways,” said Bolles. “In this program, we join textbook knowledge with real-life practice. In the classroom, students learn about how to raise animals, and then they can step outside and directly use what they’re learning,” said teacher Breanna Cole.
There’s no sleeping in for these students. They are up early, feeding, walking and cleaning their animals in preparation to show them at the County Fair “It seems like a lot of work, and you do put a lot of time and effort into it. But it’s a great comfort at the end of the busy day, sitting quietly with the animals away from hard work, especially when you just need some quiet time to unwind,” said Nevach Cornish, a student from the school. Getting to the Fair makes all those early morning feedings worth it. “It’s really cool because at the Fair you get to meet new people, and you can get a connection with them and exchange ideas,” said Julia Santos, another student from the school.
This Camarillo high school farm program isn’t just an extra class — it’s a life-shaping experience that turns textbook lessons into real doing, responsibility and joy. It’s the kind of learning more schools should look to, proving education can grow just as strongly on the farm as it does in a classroom.
8. What makes the school special?
A. It develops students’ life skills.
B. It has many after-school activities.
C. It allows students to keep animals at school.
D. It mainly offers lessons about farm animals.
9. How does the program influence the students?
A. They prefer feeding animals to studying.
B. They are too busy to develop other hobbies.
C. They have a chance to put what they learn into use.
D. They can better understand the meaning of teamwork.
10. What does the underlined word “unwind” mean?
A. Compete. B. Relax. C. Hurry up. D. Keep on.
11. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Most schools will set up farm programs soon.
B. Farm education will replace traditional classes.
C. Students can only learn responsibility from farm work.
D. Farm-based learning is as valuable as classroom learning.
D
The Stanford marshmallow (棉花糖) test was first done by psychologist Walter Mischel in the late 1960s. Children aged four to six at a preschool were placed in a room. One sweet food chosen by the child was put on a table. Every child was told that if they could wait 15 minutes before eating the sweet food, they would get another one. Then they were left alone in the room. Follow-up studies of these children showed that the ability to wait for the second sweet food had something to do with different kinds of success in their later life.
When we grow into adults, we meet a new kind of the marshmallow test every day. We’re not tempted (诱惑) by sugary treats. Instead, computers, mobile phones and tablet computers bring us all kinds of information from the whole world, draw our attention. The information influences us just like marshmallows influence little kids.
Sweet food can easily tempt us because the ancient humans lived in a world with little calorie-rich (high-energy) food. So our brains formed a special way to react to sweet food: we will feel happy and satisfied after eating them. But humans have greatly changed the world now. It takes us little money and little work to get calorie-rich food. However, our brains are still the same as those of people thousands of years ago. This difference explains why many of us have difficulty saying “no” to nice-tasting food we know we should not eat.
The same thing happens when we face information. When human beings first appeared, there was very little new information around us. For this reason, our brains learned to value new information highly. But worldwide online connections have greatly changed our information world. Now new information comes to us non-stop. So, just as we need to think carefully about what food we take in, we also need to think carefully about what information we take in. We should say no to useless “mental junk food”, so that we can make good use of our time.
12. What did the children need to do to get a second sweet food in Mischel’s test?
A. Finish a test all by themselves. B. Share sweet food with other kids.
C. Show good manners to the scientists. D. Wait for fifteen minutes before eating.
13. According to paragraph 3, there is a mismatch between________.
A. the calorie-poor world and our wish for food.
B. nice-tasting food and our wish to keep healthy.
C. the rich food supply and our unchanged brains.
D. the shortage of sugar and our body’s food needs.
14. What does the author advise us to do?
A. Accept all new information happily.
B. Keep our online information world safe.
C. Get information from many different ways.
D. Choose information we read or watch carefully.
15. Which is the best title for the text?
A. Eat Less, Read More B. The Hard Fact about Early Humans
C. The Later, the Better D. The Marshmallow Test for Grownups

Jane started high school full of excitement. Eager to help her new class, teachers and classmates, she decided to run for (竞选) monitor. She was very happy when their head teacher, Mr. Johnson, announced she won. She dreamed of leading her class to be the best in the whole school.
However, problems came one by one. During self-study time, some classmates talked loudly; some even played music. Jane would stand up and tell everyone angrily, “Be quiet! It’s study time!” But her loud orders didn’t work. Tom, who was supposed to clean the blackboard, often “forgot”. Jane shouted to remind him of his duty, which only made Tom quite embarrassed and unhappy. Jane also announced her plans for group study after school, expecting everyone to join in it. But obviously most students weren’t interested and complained about the extra “work”.
Jane felt more and more disappointed and helpless. Her direct orders seemed to push people away instead of bringing them together. Her dream of a top united class seemed to be broken by the daily problems.
Standing alone after another rule failed, she felt deeply disappointed. Her methods weren’t working at all. Maybe she wasn’t suitable for being monitor. She couldn’t stand it like this any more.
Mr. Johnson noticed Jane was in low spirits.

C 9. C 10. B 11. D
根据第一段“Students in Camarillo high school are getting a real hands-on (实际操作的) education, thanks to an unusual farm program. They aren’t just learning about farm animals. They’re raising them! This is the only high school in the country that raises its own animals on campus. (Camarillo高中的学生得益于特别的农场项目,获得实操教育。他们不只是学习农场动物相关知识,还饲养动物!这是国内唯一在校内饲养动物的高中。)”可知,这所学校的特别之处是允许学生在校饲养动物。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“In this program, we join textbook knowledge with real-life practice. In the classroom, students learn about how to raise animals, and then they can step outside and directly use what they’re learning (在该项目中,我们把课本知识和现实实践结合起来。学生在课堂学习饲养动物的知识,之后可以走到户外直接运用所学内容)”可知,项目让学生有机会学以致用。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“But it’s a great comfort at the end of the busy day, sitting quietly with the animals away from hard work, especially when you just need some quiet time to unwind (但在忙碌一天结束后,远离繁重劳作,安静陪着动物会让人十分舒心,尤其是当你需要一段安静的时光来____的时候)”可知,at the end of the busy day、away from hard work、need some quiet time都指向“忙碌后需要放松、解压”,因此unwind跟“Relax (放松)”意义相近。
根据最后一段“This Camarillo high school farm program isn’t just an extra class — it’s a life-shaping experience that turns textbook lessons into real doing, responsibility and joy. It’s the kind of learning more schools should look to, proving education can grow just as strongly on the farm as it does in a classroom. (Camarillo高中农场项目不仅仅是一门额外的课程,而是一次塑造人生的经历,将课本上的知识转化为实际操作、责任与乐趣。这种学习方式值得更多学校借鉴,证明教育在农场中同样能蓬勃发展,其影响力不亚于课堂学习。)”可知,农场式学习和课堂学习一样有价值。
D 13. C 14. D 15. D
根据第一段中的“Every child was told that if they could wait 15 minutes before eating the sweet food, they would get another one.(每个孩子被告知,如果能够等待15分钟再吃甜食,就可以再得到一份甜食。)”
根据第三段中的“But humans have greatly changed the world now. It takes us little money and little work to get calorie-rich food. However, our brains are still the same as those of people thousands of years ago.(但是人类如今已经极大地改变了世界。我们花费很少金钱和精力就能获取高热量食物。然而我们的大脑仍然和几千年前的人类一样。)”可知,食物供给变得丰富,但人类大脑并未随之改变,二者之间存在不匹配。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“So, just as we need to think carefully about what food we take in, we also need to think carefully about what information we take in. We should say no to useless “mental junk food”, so that we can make good use of our time.(因此,正如我们需要谨慎考虑摄入什么食物一样,我们也需要谨慎考虑接收什么信息。我们应当拒绝无用的“精神垃圾食品”,从而充分利用时间。)”可知,作者建议我们要谨慎选择阅读和观看的信息。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第二段中的“When we grow into adults, we meet a new kind of the marshmallow test every day. We’re not tempted (诱惑) by sugary treats. Instead, computers, mobile phones and tablet computers bring us all kinds of information from the whole world, draw our attention.(当我们长大成人,我们每天都会遇到一种新的棉花糖测试。诱惑我们的不再是甜食。取而代之,电脑、手机和平板电脑带给我们来自世界各地的各类信息,吸引我们的注意力。)”可知,文章以经典棉花糖实验引入,讲述成年人每天面对各类信息诱惑,这就是成年人的棉花糖测试,所以“The Marshmallow Test for Grownups(成年人的棉花糖测试)”最适合作为文章标题。

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
With a clear mind, Jane returned to her duties in a new way.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Mr. Johnson noticed Jane was in low spirits. He gently asked her to stay after class. Sensing her disappointment, he shared his own early struggles as a teacher. “True leadership,” he said softly, “isn’t about shouting orders. It’s about respect and teamwork. Try listening more and talking with your classmates.” Jane felt a little hope as Mr. Johnson encouraged her to find wiser ways to win their trust. His words were like a ray of light, brightening her confusion. She realized she needed to change her methods to bring everyone together.
With a clear mind, Jane returned to her duties in a new way. Instead of shouting out commands, she arranged time to chat gently with her classmates and listen to their ideas and suggestions. She also grouped the whole class for cleaning duties to ensure fairness. To encourage a quiet environment for self-study, she herself kept learning quietly, setting a good example. Feeling their voices heard and understood, more students joined the study groups willingly. Gradually, the noisy classroom became quieter. Hopefully, Jane came to realize it was respect and cooperation that could build up the strong team in her dream.
