NASA (the US space group) moved its Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and the Orion spaceship to the launch place at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on January 17. The move took nearly 12 hours and was a key step in the Artemis Ⅱ mission to send a crewed spaceship around the Moon, which could be launched in February.
NASA's Artemis program aims to put humans on the Moon for the first time since 1972. In November 2022, Artemis Ⅰ sent an unmanned test flight around the Moon. This flight travelled farther than any other spacecraft ever had before returning to Earth.
For Artemis Ⅱ, the SLS will launch Orion, which will carry four astronauts along the same route. The team includes NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Christina Koch, as well as Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen. Koch, a mission specialist, will be the first woman to reach the Moon.
Now that Orion and the SLS are in position, NASA will conduct many tests and practise launch-day procedures, like putting fuel in the rocket and counting down.
According to NASA, if the tests are successful, the mission could be launched between February 6 and 11, but no later than April.
During their journey, the team will test Orion's systems and equipment. If the mission succeeds, the Artemis Ⅲ mission could land astronauts on the Moon's surface by the end of 2028. "Artemis Ⅱ will be an important step forward for human spaceflight," said NASA head Jared Isaacman.
