During the festival, Miao people dress up in traditional dress and there are large parades (游行). The locals celebrate by beating drums, dancing to the music of lusheng, horse racing and sometimes horse fighting or bullfighting. The Lusheng Festival The largest Lusheng Festival is held in Kaili. It is celebrated from the 16th to the 20th of the first lunar month. During the festival, Miao people from surrounding villages all come together in traditional dress. The men play lusheng while the women dance. They believe that this will bring a good harvest and good health in the coming year. However, the festival is not simply about playing lusheng. It also features other activities typical of Miao people, such as singing, bullfighting, and horse racing. The Sister’s Meal Festival Held from the 15th to the 17th of the third lunar month, it is the most popular festival with young men and women of Miao people. Before the festival, Miao girls go to the mountains to gather wild flowers and leaves, which are then used to make coloured dye (染料). When the festival begins, Miao girls meet by the river banks to make “sister’s rice”. They dye the rice blue, pink, yellow and white to represent spring, summer, autumn and winter. When the men arrive, each of them singles out the woman he loves and sings to her. The woman responds to the song by giving the man a cup of rice wine and the sister’s rice. If the woman offers a pair of red chopsticks, it means the woman returns the man’s love. If only one rice chopstick is offered, it is a polite refusal. 1. What can be learnt about Miao New Year? A. The date for celebration varies with the region. B. It celebrates the beginning of spring. C. Its celebrations range from concerts to parades. D. It takes at least 15 days to prepare and celebrate. 2. What do Miao New Year and the Lusheng Festival have in common? A. They have the same origin. B. They have similar celebrations. C. They both celebrate crop harvest. D. They last the same period. 3. Why is the Sister’s Meal Festival popular with young people? A. It allows them to dye rice for fun. B. It is an occasion for them to seek love. C. It features sports activities like horse racing. D. It is an opportunity to show their singing talents. A 2. B 3. 根据第一段中的“It is celebrated at different times of the year in different regions, usually in the period from the ninth to the eleventh month of the Chinese lunar calendar and lasting 5 to 15 days.(在不同地区,它在每年不同的时间庆祝,通常在农历九月至十一月之间,持续5至15天。)” 故选A。 根据第一段中的“The locals celebrate by beating drums, dancing to the music of lusheng, horse racing and sometimes horse fighting or bullfighting.(当地人通过击鼓、随着芦笙的音乐跳舞、赛马,有时还有斗马或斗牛来庆祝。)”和第二段中的“It also features other activities typical of Miao people, such as singing. bullfighting, and horse racing.(它还有其他一些苗族特有的活动,比如唱歌,斗牛和赛马。)” 根据最后一段“When the men arrive, each of them singles out the woman he loves and sings to her. The woman responds to the song by giving the man a cup of rice wine and the sister’s rice. If the rice is offered with a pair of red chopsticks, it means the woman returns the man’s love. If only one chopstick is offered, it is a polite refusal.(当男人们到来时,每个人都会挑选出他爱的女人并为她唱歌。女人通过给男人一杯米酒和姐妹的米来回应这首歌。如果米是用一双红筷子提供的,这意味着女人也爱着这个男人。如果只提供一根筷子,那就是礼貌地拒绝。)”可知,苗族的“姊妹节”受到年轻人的欢迎,是因为它为年轻男女提供了表达爱意的场合。故选B。 B As I walked into the primary school, looking down at my new Mary Jane shoes, my stomach turned — I wanted to be anywhere in the world but Fountain Inn Elementary School. I stood at Mrs Blackstone’s door. The wooden door suddenly opened to the sing-song voice of Mrs Blackstone, my new fifth grade teacher. “We’ve been waiting for you!” she said in an unusually high voice. With a smile my mum walked away and I was left standing in front of a group of students. Over the next few days, Mrs Blackstone made it her job to find me a new best friend and help me join a choir (合唱团). During history lessons, as I didn’t want to speak in front of the class she would not only call on me but have me stand up to address my classmates. Little by little I felt much more relaxed in the new environment. One spring afternoon, Mrs Blackstone asked me to stay after class. “I’d like to speak with you, Amanda.” My mind raced. Had I made a bad grade? Had I hurt someone’s feelings? “Are you enjoying your new school?” She sat comfortably behind her desk. “I want to tell you something, between you and me, not to be shared with anyone else.” “Er... Okay.” My throat all of a sudden felt very dry. With her eyebrows raised she said, “I see something special in you. The way you communicate with others, the kindness you show — I think you have great potential to be something very important.” I listened carefully to every word. “I’ve been a teacher for over 25 years; I can see it. But you must believe in yourself. That’s very important. Remember that and you’ll go far.” Her sing-song voice was music to my ears that day. I walked out of her class, not looking at my shoes, but looking straight ahead with my head high. My teacher saw something special in me! 4. What do we know about the author from the first two paragraphs? A. She went to school unwillingly. B. She liked her teacher’s singing. C. She was afraid of her new teacher. D. She liked the new school very much. 5. What does the underlined word “address” in paragraph 4 mean? A. Work with. B. Look at. C. Speak to. D. Learn from. 6. How did the author feel when she was asked to stay behind one afternoon? A. Annoyed. B. Excited. C. Surprised. D. Anxious. 7. Why did Mrs Blackstone have a talk with the author? A. To help her improve her grades. B. To encourage her to be confident. C. To make a good impression on her. D. To offer her information about the choir. A 5. C 6. D 7. 根据第一段“my stomach turned — I wanted to be anywhere in the world but Fountain Inn Elementary School.(我反胃了——我想去世界上任何地方,就是不想去Fountain Inn小学。)” 故选A。 根据上文“During history lessons, as I didn’t want to speak in front of the class(在历史课上,因为我不想在全班同学面前发言)”和下文“Little by little I felt much more relaxed in the new environment.(渐渐地,我在这个新环境里感觉自在多了。)” 根据第五段“One spring afternoon, Mrs Blackstone asked me to stay after class. “I’d like to speak with you, Amanda.” My mind raced. Had I made a bad grade? Had I hurt someone’s feelings.(一个春天的下午,布莱克斯通夫人让我下课后留下来。“我想和你谈谈,阿曼达。”我的脑子飞快地转着。我的成绩不好吗?我伤害了别人的感情吗)”可知,作者被要求留下来时,她的脑子飞快地转着,担心自己成绩不好或者伤害了别人的感情,说明她当时是焦虑的。故选D。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。根据第七段“I see something special in you. The way you communicate with others, the kindness you show — I think you have great potential to be something very important.(我在你身上看到了一些特别的东西。你与他人交流的方式,你表现出的善良——我认为你有很大的潜力成为非常重要的人。)”和倒数第二段“But you must believe in yourself. That’s very important. Remember that and you’ll go far.(但你必须相信自己。这很重要。记住这一点,你会走得很远的。)”可知,布莱克斯通夫人和作者谈话是为了鼓励她自信。故选B。 C Choosing a hotel, restaurant or new product can be a difficult task. There’s so much on offer, and making a mistake can be expensive. This is why many people turn to online reviews- opinions and information written by people who have used a service or bought a product. But can we trust them? About 70% of Americans say they believe online user reviews. According to experts, this is because when we read a review by another consumer, we feel like we’re getting a personal recommendation from a friend. But a recent study shows that about one third of online reviews are fake. Apparently, companies are so desperate for good reviews that they’ve started to “play” the system. So, how do they do it? One trick is to give positive reviews to your own product or service. Best-selling writer RJ Ellory was recently caught writing 5-star reviews of his own books on Amazon.com. Using a name, he called one of his books a “modern masterpiece (杰作)” and said another would “touch people’s hearts”. RJ also wrote negative reviews of his rivals’ (对手) books. Another trick is to “buy” good reviews. Last year, the Cove Hotel in Cornwall was caught giving guests discounts if they wrote “honest but positive” reviews on TripAdvisor. The trick worked-one guest called The Cove Hotel a “dream comes true”. Some people are even making a living by writing favourable reviews. In 2010, American Todd Rutherford started GettingBookReviews.com. For $99, Todd would write a positive review of your book on Amazon.com; and for $999, he’d write 50 reviews. So, how can you tell a fake review? First, if the reviewer uses lots of highly positive language, it’s probably fake. Secondly, if the review reads like an advertisement, it probably is an ad. And finally, if the review is negative but also speaks highly of a competitor, it might have been written by that competitor. 8. How does the author introduce the topic? A. By discussing some questions. B. By describing a common situation. C. By presenting different opinions. D. By analyzing a specific example. 9. What did RJ Ellory do to “play” the online reviewing system? A. He bought dozens of reviews from a professional website. B. He offered discounts to readers who gave him good reviews. C. He asked Amazon to remove negative reviews of his books. D. He praised his own books and criticized his competitors’ works. 10. What can we learn from paragraph 3 and paragraph 4? A. Positive reviews can touch people’s hearts. B. Companies use the reviewing system to their advantage. C. Many hotels pay guests to write positive reviews for them. D. Writing reviews is a major source of income for Internet users. 11. What is the last paragraph mainly about? A. Features of some types of online reviews. B. Reasons behind choices of online reviews. C. Suggestions for how to judge online reviews. D. Ways to tell positive online views from negative ones. B 9. D 10. B 11. 根据第一段“Choosing a hotel, restaurant or new product can be a difficult task. There’s so much on offer, and making a mistake can be expensive. This is why many people turn to online reviews — opinions and information written by people who have used a service or bought a product. But can we trust them? (选择酒店、餐厅或新产品可能是一项艰巨的任务。有这么多的机会,犯一个错误可能会付出昂贵的代价。这就是为什么很多人求助于在线评论——那些使用过某项服务或购买过某件产品的人所写的意见和信息。但我们能相信他们吗?)”可知,作者在第一段通过描述一个常见的情况介绍了文章的主题。故选B。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中“Best-selling writer RJ Ellory was recently caught writing 5-star reviews of his own books on Amazon.com. Using a name, he called one of his books a “modern masterpiece (杰作)” and said another would “touch people’s hearts”. RJ also wrote negative reviews of his rivals’ (对手)books.(畅销书作家RJ Ellory最近被发现在亚马逊网站上给自己的书写了5颗星的评论。他称自己的一本书为“现代杰作”,并表示另一本书将“触动人心”。RJ也给对手的书写负面评论)”可知,RJ Ellory通过夸赞自己的书并批评竞争对手的作品来“操纵”在线评论系统。故选D。 【10题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段“Another trick is to “buy” good reviews. (另一个技巧是“购买”好的评论。去年,康沃尔郡的海湾酒店(Cove Hotel)被发现,如果客人在TripAdvisor上写下“诚实但积极”的评论,就会给客人折扣。这招奏效了——一位客人称“小海湾”是“梦想成真”。有些人甚至靠写好评来谋生。2010年,美国人Todd Rutherford创办了GettingBookReviews.com。只要花99美元,托德就会在亚马逊网站上给你的书写一篇积极的评论;只要999美元,他就能写50篇评论)”可知,公司利用评论系统为自己谋取利益。故选B。 【11题详解】 主旨大意题。根据最后一段“So, how can you tell a fake review? First, if the reviewer uses lots of highly positive language, it’s probably fake. Secondly, if the review reads like an advertisement, it probably is an ad. And finally, if the review is negative but also speaks highly of a competitor, it might have been written by that competitor. (那么,如何分辨虚假评论呢?首先,如果评论者使用了很多非常积极的语言,那么它可能是假的,其次,如果评论读起来像广告,那么它可能就是广告。最后,如果评论是负面的,但也高度评价了竞争对手,那么它可能是由竞争对手写的。)”可知,最后一段给出了如何判断在线评论的建议。故选C。 D Rescarchers have developed a new soft robot design that conducts itself with three behaviours at the same time: rolling (翻滚) forward. turning like a record and following a path that goes around a central point. The equipment, which operates without human or computer control, holds promise for developing soft robots that can be used to AA- head and map unknown environments. The new soft robots are called twisted ring-bots They are made of something like a ribbon (缎带) and then joined together at the end to form a ring. When the robots are placed on a surface that is at least 55 degrees Celsius, which is hotter than the surrounding air, one part of the ribbon touching the surface becomes smaller, while one part in the air does not. This induces a rolling movement: the warmer the surface, the faster the robot rolls. “The ribbon rolls on its horizontal axis (横轴), giving the ring forward strength,” says Jie Yin, a professor of mechanical and acrospace engineering. The twisted ring-bot also turns along its central axis. And as the twisted ring-bot moves forward it travels in a path around a central point, basically moving in a large circle. However, if the twisted ring-bot meets a boundary--like the wall of a box--it will travel along the boundary. The twisted ring-bots are examples of equipment whose behaviour is governed by physical intelligence, meaning their actions are determined by their structural design and the materials they are made of, rather than being directed by a computer or human. “Soft robotics is still a relatively new field.” Yin says. “Finding new ways to control the movement of soft robots in a repeatable and engineered way moves the field forward. And advancing our understanding of what is possible is exciting.” 12. What makes the robot roll faster and faster? A. The ribbon. B. The central axis. C. The shape and material. D. The higher surface temperature. 13. How does the author introduce the new soft robots? A. By explaining the robot’s working ways. B. By quoting experts’ opinions. C. By making some comparisons. D. By offering reasons and results. 14. What is Yin’s attitude towards twisted ring- bots? A. Unclear. B. Positive. C. Negative. D. Doubtful. 15. What is the best title for the text? A. The New Soft Robots B. Ribbons and Their Rolling C. Three Creative Movements D. Twisted Rings and the Axis 【答案】12. D 13. A 14. B 15. 根据第三段的“When the robots are placed on a surface that is at least 55 degrees Celsius, which is hotter than the surrounding air, one part of the ribbon touching the surface becomes smaller, while one part in the air does not. This induces a rolling movement: the warmer the surface, the faster the robot rolls.(当机器人被放置在至少55摄氏度的表面上,这比周围的空气要热,接触表面的带子的一部分会变小,而空气中的一部分则不会。这引起了一个滚动运动:表面越热,机器人滚动得越快。)”可知,其接触表面的温度越高,旋转越快。故选D。 【13题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段的“When the robots are placed on a surface that is at least 55 degrees Celsius, which is hotter than the surrounding air, one part of the ribbon touching the surface becomes smaller, while one part in the air does not. This induces a rolling movement: the warmer the surface, the faster the robot rolls.(当机器人被放置在至少55摄氏度的表面上,这比周围的空气要热,接触表面的带子的一部分会变小,而空气中的一部分则不会。这引起了一个滚动运动:表面越热,机器人滚动得越快。)”和第二段的“The new soft robots are called twisted ring-bots (扭曲环机器人). They are made of something like a ribbon (缎带) and then joined together at the end to form a ring.(这种新型软体机器人被称为“扭曲环机器人”。它们是由类似缎带的东西制成的,然后在末端连接在一起形成一个环。)”可知,作者主要通过解释机器人的工作方式来介绍新的软体机器人,故选A。 【14题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章最后一段的““Soft robotics is still a relatively new field.” Yin says. “Finding new ways to control the movement of soft robots in a repeatable and engineered way moves the field forward. And advancing our understanding of what is possible is exciting.”(“软体机器人仍然是一个相对较新的领域。”Yin说。“寻找以可重复和工程化的方式控制软机器人运动的新方法将推动该领域向前发展。推进我们对可能性的理解是令人兴奋的。”)”可知,Yin对新型软体机器人的态度是积极的。故选B。 【15题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第一段“Rescarchers have developed a new soft robot design that conducts itself with three behaviours at the same time: rolling (翻滚) forward. turning like a record and following a path that goes around a central point. The equipment, which operates without human or computer control, holds promise for developing soft robots that can be used to AA- head and map unknown environments.( 研究人员开发了一种新的软体机器人设计,它同时具有三种行为:翻滚向前,像唱片一样旋转,沿着一条绕着中心点的路径。该设备无需人工或计算机控制,有望开发出可用于自动识别和绘制未知环境地图的软机器人。)”以及全文内容可知,本文主要介绍了新型软体机器人——扭曲环机器人的相关工作原理和特点等。因此推断A项“The New Soft Robots(新软体机器人)”为最佳标题。故选A。 Starting High School What is high school really like? is there more work? More stress? ____16____ Lots of other freshmen are feeling the same way you are. With that in mind, here are a few topics that commonly worry incoming freshmen and some things you might want to know about. Starting Out at a New School You may not know a lot of people when you start high school. How are you going to make friends among the sea of unknown faces? Most high schools hold a freshman orientation (迎新会) before school actually starts. These are helpful not only because you learn your way around the building and get to meet some of your teachers, but you also get to meet fellow freshmen. ____17____ Learning Inside the Classroom How about the workload (工作量) in high school — is it a lot harder? ____18____ The work in high school builds on what you learn in middle school, giving you a more advanced knowledge of many subjects. So you may find you have more work to do or that it’s a bit more challenging. But these challenges can make you feel less bored with the usual life — it feels great when you’ve mastered something really hard. Maybe you’ll find a new interest in biology or discover a love for literature. If you ever find your work too heavy, you can turn to teachers for extra help. Extra-curricular Activities High school also has more extra-curricular activities than middle school did, such as clubs, music and theatre groups, student union, and sports teams. ____19____ These activities may take place before or after school, or during free periods or study hall. Because of this, it helps to improve your time management skills in your first year. ____20____ Everybody needs to take a break. A. It’s perfectly OK if you’re nervous at first. B. If you’re having thoughts like these, you’re not alone. C. Talking with your classmates can help develop new friendships. D. High school is a time to achieve independence and responsibility. E. This is a fantastic time to explore your interests and try new things. F. Again, this is something your classmates are probably worried about, too. G. Extra-curricular activities are great, but you should have some free time. B 17. C 18. F 19. E 20. 【16题详解】 根据上文“What is high school really like? is there more work? More stress? (高中生活到底是什么样的?会有更多的作业吗?更大的压力吗?)”可知,上文提出了高中生活的一些问题,表现出了新生的担忧和不安。B选项“If you’re having thoughts like these, you’re not alone.”(如果你有这些想法,你不是一个人。)” 【17题详解】 上文“ These are helpful not only because you learn your way around the building and get to meet some of your teachers, but you also get to meet fellow freshmen. C选项“Talking with your classmates can help develop new friendships. 【18题详解】 上文“How about the workload (工作量) in high school — is it a lot harder? F选项“Again, this is something your classmates are probably worried about, too. 【19题详解】 上文“High school also has more extra-curricular activities than middle school did, such as clubs, music and theatre groups, student union, and sports teams. E选项“This is a fantastic time to explore your interests and try new things. 【20题详解】 上文“Because of this, it helps to improve your time management skills in your first year. G选项“Extra-curricular activities are great, but you should have some free time. 进一步强调了平衡课外活动和空闲时间的重要性,与下文“Everybody needs to take a break. I had always considered myself a good student. A. It is an occasion for them to seek love. C. It features sports activities like horse racing. D. It is an opportunity to show their singing talents. B As I walked into the primary school, looking down at my new Mary Jane shoes, my stomach turned — I wanted to be anywhere in the world but Fountain Inn Elementary School. C Choosing a hotel, restaurant or new product can be a difficult task. D Rescarchers have developed a new soft robot design that conducts itself with three behaviours at the same time: rolling (翻滚) forward. turning like a record and following a path that goes around a central point. Twisted Rings and the Axis Starting High School What is high school really like? is there more work?
