My grandfather often tells me about his childhood in a small village. At that time, life was hard. There was only one narrow road in the village, and most people lived in old houses. Children had to walk two hours to school. There were no TVs or phones, so people got news from the radio.
Great changes have taken place since then. Now a wide road runs through the village, and a high-speed railway station is only ten kilometers away. Almost every family has moved into a new apartment. Children go to school by school bus, and they can study online with computers.
What makes my grandfather happiest is the environment. Years ago, people cut down many trees, and the river was polluted. Thanks to the “Green Countryside” program, villagers have planted thousands of trees. The river is clean again, and birds have come back.
“When I was young, I dreamed of a better life,” my grandfather says with a smile. “Now my dream has come true. But you should remember: a good life doesn’t come easily. You must work hard to keep it.”
1.When the grandfather was young, people in the village got news from ________.
A.the TV B.the radio C.the Internet
2.Now the children in the village go to school ________.

Have you ever noticed the sidewalks for the blind in your daily life? They’re very important for those who can’t see. Over the years, such sidewalks in Shenzhen have changed a lot.
In the past, there were very few such sidewalks. Even when they did exist, bikes and cars often occupied them, which made it unsafe for blind people to go out alone. They might get lost, or even get hurt.
But now, things are different. Most roads have sidewalks designed for the blind. What’s more, the new design is more user-friendly. For example, the sidewalks are built 30 to 50 centimeters away from green plants. Some are even built away from manhole covers (井盖). Such designs make the blind feel safer while they’re walking.
However, a few problems remain the same. Some people still park their cars on the sidewalks. Also, blind people need sound signals (信号) at traffic lights to cross the road safely.
Even though there are still problems, everyone agrees that these changes show the progress of our society and culture. It reflects (反映) that people care more about each other-especially those who need help. And as we know, more cities will follow Shenzhen.

Have you ever imagined a garbage burning factory does not have enough rubbish to burn? In some cities, this is becoming true.
In the past people made too much rubbish. Cities built waste-to-energy factories to burn rubbish and make electricity. But now, some factories get less daily household waste. They are becoming “hungry”. This is actually good news for us.
Why does this happen? Because waste recycling works well today. People sort their rubbish carefully; kitchen waste can be made into fertilizer (肥料), while plastic, paper, glass and metal can be used again. There is less leftover rubbish to burn. Besides, people learn to cut down waste and reuse things in daily life.
Even so, waste-to-energy factories are still useful. Here is how they work:
*Arriving: Trucks put rubbish into a big storage area. A machine mixes it up.
*Reacting: Then the rubbish goes into a hot oven with a temperature over 850℃. ▲ Heat causes a burning reaction here. Natural waste such as food, paper and wood reacts with oxygen (O2), breaking down to give off heat, carbon dioxide (CO2) and water vapor (H2O). The high-pressure vapor makes a machine called a turbine (涡轮) run fast. The fast-moving turbine is connected to another machine to make electricity.
*Cleaning the smoke: Before smoke goes into the air, cleaners make it clean. About 90% of the waste at the beginning is gone. The ash (灰) left can be used for building houses, and metal in the ash can be collected and recycled again.
Good points: It cuts down waste greatly, saves ground space for rubbish, makes electricity and collects metal for reuse.
Bad points: Burning rubbish still makes CO2gas. What’s more, people may think burning can solve all problems and forget to reduce and reuse waste first.
Right recycling is the most useful way to protect our home. The future will be a greener world where no waste is left useless.
1.What can people do with kitchen waste according to the passage?
A.It can be made into fertilizer. B.It can be sold for money.
C.It can be kept in storage forever. D.It can be used to clean water.
2.Which sentence can be put into ▲ in Paragraph 6?
A.This is where math is recorded! B.This is where chemistry happens!
C.This is where physics takes control! D.This is where biology starts working!
3.Why are the good and bad points included in the passage?
A.Because they show the writer’s personal feelings.
B.Because they tell readers what to do immediately.
C.Because they give a balanced and complete opinion.
D.Because they make the passage longer and easier to read.
4.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.People make more rubbish than before. B.Ash can be used for building houses.
C.Burning rubbish can’t produce CO2. D.Factories are no longer useful today.
5.What’s the main purpose of the passage?
A.To warn people not to build rubbish-burning factories.
B.To teach students how to sort kitchen waste at home.
C.To explain how a turbine works to make electricity.
D.To introduce garbage factories and ways to deal with waste.

Last month, our class did a meaningful survey on green living, and I learned so much! Now I am fully aware of how small daily habits can effectively protect our planet. Here are my changes:
First, I changed my daily habits. I used to take the bus to school, but now I ride my bike to reduce pollution. At home, I always turn off lights when leaving a room and unplug (拔掉……的电源插头) devices properly instead of just turning them off. My mom laughed at first, but now she does it too!
Second, I started “No Plastic Weekends”. I know plastic is harmful to animals like whales and turtles. Instead of buying snacks packaged in plastic bags, I choose to bake cookies at home with my family. I also use cloth bags for shopping. Last weekend, I even bought cute reusable bags with panda designs!
Finally, my family started a small garden on our balcony (阳台). We grow tomatoes with rainwater, and collect the water from washing vegetables and use it to water them. We also use kitchen waste as fertilizer. Now we eat little takeout food and sort waste carefully. My dad says we’re reducing our carbon footprint (足迹). Cool, right?
What about you? Do you reuse water in the toilet or try other green ways? Tell me your green ideas! Let’s act together to make the earth cleaner and greener for everyone. Every small step truly counts!

Sea stars, or starfish, are beautiful and common ocean animals that help keep the ocean ecosystem balanced. However, a terrible illness called Sea Star Wasting Disease (SSWD) is affecting them greatly.
The disease was first noticed in 2013. Since then, millions of sea stars along the Pacific coast of North America have died from this condition. It causes sea stars to develop painful wounds on their skin, lose their arms, and slowly turn into a soft, melted mess.
Scientists once considered viruses to be the cause of the disease, but now they believe that environmental stress makes things even worse. One important factor is warmer ocean water. Higher water temperatures help phytoplankton (浮游植物) grow quickly in large numbers. These tiny plants use up much of the oxygen in the water, making it hard for sea stars to breathe. At the same time, other microorganisms (微生物) living on and around sea stars grow rapidly and feed on their wounds, making the problem worse. This creates a dangerous cycle where sea stars slowly waste away and die.
The loss of sea stars does great harm to the ocean ecosystem. As important natural hunters, sea stars help control populations of mussels and sea urchins (贻贝和海胆). Without them, sea urchin numbers can increase rapidly and destroy kelp forests (海藻林), which provide homes for many ocean animals and help take in CO2 from the air to fight climate change.
SSWD shows how environmental changes can affect many living things in the ocean. To protect sea stars and other ocean life, we need to slow global warming and support scientific research. Only by caring for the oceans can we keep the ecosystem healthy.
1.What will happen if sea stars get SSWD?
A.They will destroy forests. B.They will move to deeper water.
C.They will grow larger and stronger. D.They will slowly waste away and die.
2.How does the writer mainly develop Paragraph 3?
A.By comparing facts. B.By showing different opinions.
C.By explaining causes and effects. D.By describing personal experiences.
3.What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.Mussels. B.Sea stars. C.Sea urchins. D.Kelp forests.
4.What’s the main purpose of the text?
A.To call for ocean protection.
B.To introduce different sea animals.
C.To explain how sea animals protect themselves.
D.To encourage people to do scientific research on oceans.
5.What’s the structure of the text?
(①=Paragraph 1, ②=Paragraph 2, …)
A. B. C. D.
【答案】1.D 2.C 3.B 4.A 5.A

About 40 years ago, satellites saw a few small areas of vegetation (植被) in the Antarctic Peninsula (南极半岛). These plants covered about 740 square metres.
Since then, however, the land has been turning green quickly. A new study shows that mosses (苔藓) have taken up more than 12 million square metres—nearly four times the size of New York’s Central Park! Based on satellite pictures from 1986 to 2021, the study shows that the greening has sped up by 30 percent since 2016. That’s fast enough to cover nearly 75 football fields per year.
“Our study tells us climate change influences everywhere,” said Thomas Roland, an environmental scientist. “Even in this far and quiet land, the landscape is changing.” Antarctica is the coldest place on Earth. But it has had many terrible hot days recently. This summer, a very strong heatwave hit parts of Antarctica. In mid-July, its temperature was about 10°C higher than usual.
When the world gets warmer, Antarctica will become hotter too, so more plants will grow there. This will put local animals and the ecosystem of Antarctica at risk. “Seeds and small plant parts can come here easily by tourists, birds or wind,” Roland said. Plants are dark. Dark ground takes in more heat. That means more plants will make Antarctica less able to send the sun’s heat back into space.
At present, the Antarctic landscape is still almost all snow, ice and rock. In the long run, however, they could help further encourage the growth of plants as the climate continues to warm. “The landscape in the Antarctic could be changed forever,” said another scientist.

According to the United Nations, about 2.2 billion people around the world still don’t have enough safe drinking water. Some of them live in dry areas and suffer from water shortage every year. Because of this serious problem, many scientists are trying their best to find useful new solutions to get clean fresh water.
Professor Omar Yaghi is one of those scientists. He has created a special device (装置). It can collect water directly from the air. Even in very dry places, like hot deserts with little rainfall all year round, it can still work well. In a recent test in Death Valley, one of the hottest and driest places on Earth, the device successfully collected usable water.
The secret lies in the special materials inside the device. These materials can catch water vapor from the air, even when the air is very dry. The device then turns the water vapor into clean and safe drinking water. Each device can make up to 1,000 L of water a day. Besides, it consumes very little energy and can work without power. This great advantage makes it fit for areas with no electricity supply.
Yaghi’s idea comes from his own childhood experiences. He grew up in a very dry place. People there received fresh water only once every few weeks. These early experiences never left him. They made him realize how valuable water is and inspired him to spend years finding a better way to get it.
The device can help people in dry places and natural disaster areas. For example, after typhoons or floods, clean water is often hard to get. This device can provide water quickly in such situations. Have you ever wondered if astronauts can enjoy grilled (烤的) food in space, or how they cook in a weightless environment? It is known to all that astronauts usually eat freeze-dried meals, but things have changed with a new invention. Six astronauts from Shenzhou XX and Shenzhou XXI successfully grilled chicken wings and beef in Tiangong Space Station. This marks the first real cooking experience in space for the astronauts.
________ First, hot air doesn’t rise in space like it does on our planet. This causes food to cook very slowly. Second, tiny particles (粒子) of oil and smoke spread everywhere in the space station. These particles are dangerous and bad for the astronauts’ health.
Luckily, Chinese engineers created a smart oven to fix these problems. This oven has a small fan to move hot air around. A closed system is added to it to catch smoke and oil. This can keep the inside of the space station clean and safe. This special oven makes it possible for astronauts to enjoy freshly made food, including cakes.
In a video from the station about 400 km above Earth, an astronaut put the chicken wings on a special plate. They were cooked in the oven at 180°C for 28 minutes. When the hot wings came out of the oven, the aroma spread everywhere in the space station. All astronauts came together to try them. They said they loved the wonderful smell. After tasting them, they felt very happy. The wings were absolutely delicious. They greatly enjoyed this special meal in space.

A long time ago in ancient China, people didn’t have a good way to stay dry when it rained. On rainy days, they had to run and hide under trees or wait in pavilions (凉亭). It was hard to travel or do anything outdoors in bad weather.
One day, a smart and kind inventor named Luban was walking outside when dark clouds appeared. Soon, heavy rain poured from the sky. Luban quickly ran to a pavilion for cover. As he stood there watching the rain, he noticed something interesting: a little boy running by, holding a big lotus leaf over his head like a roof.
The boy was using the lotus leaf to block the rain. It wasn’t perfect, but it worked for a while. Luban smiled and thought, “That’s clever. The leaf acts like a small roof. Maybe I can make something better so that people can carry it with them.”
After going home, Luban began working on an idea. He made a light frame (骨架) out of sticks and covered it with oilcloth to stop the rain. It looked like a small, round roof on a stick—the first umbrella.
When Luban’s wife, Yun, saw it, she liked it but said, “It’s smart, but it would be even better if it could open and close.”
Luban agreed. So together, they improved the design by adding a folding (折叠) frame. Now the umbrella could be easily carried and used anytime.

①Do you know how the microwave oven (微波炉) was invented? It all began with a surprising accident in the 1930s. Back then, a man named Percy Spencer worked at a company called Raytheon. The company was busy making machines for World War II, which were very important for the war effort.
②One day, when Percy was testing a new machine part called a magnetron (磁控管), he noticed something strange. A chocolate bar that he had put in his pocket earlier had melted (融化)! He didn’t feel any heat around him, so he wanted to find out why the chocolate had melted.
③Percy decided to do some simple research. First, he put a glass of water near the magnetron. Soon, the water boiled (煮沸) really fast—much faster than it does on a normal stove. Then, he tried heating an egg. To his surprise, the egg broke! Through these small tests, Percy realized that the microwaves from the magnetron could cook food quickly.
④Percy and his team then started working on a new kind of oven that used microwaves to cook food. In 1945, they made the first microwave oven. This first microwave was very bulky—it was about five feet tall and weighed over 700 pounds. It was also very expensive, so most families couldn’t buy it. Instead, it was mainly used in restaurants and on ships.
⑤Over the next few years, engineers kept working to improve microwave ovens. They made them smaller, cheaper, and safer for home use. By the 1970s, many families had microwave ovens in their kitchens. People loved them because cooking with microwaves was fast and easy. A meal that took hours to make with traditional ovens could be ready in minutes with a microwave!

Delivery has a long history in China. In ancient times, delivering things quickly was never easy. People spent a great deal of time on the road and often faced terrible weather.
In the early Shang Dynasty, there were no post offices or bicycles. Messengers traveled on foot for days to deliver the king’s messages. They even had to carry basic food and water for their long journeys.
As time went by, delivery improved greatly during the Tang Dynasty. People rode horses to send things faster, saving much time. Some also used kites or pigeons to deliver letters. Pigeons could fly long distances and send messages correctly. These new methods made communication much easier.
After that, during the Qing Dynasty, a special service called Biaoju appeared. Skilled guards helped send letters and kept people and their valuables safe on dangerous roads. They were brave and tried their best to complete each task.
Nowadays, delivery services are everywhere. Online shopping keeps countless delivery workers busy. They ride electric bikes or drive cars to bring goods to our doors on time, rain or shine. By 2026, delivery has become even faster and smarter. Many robots and drones (无人机) help deliver packages in cities and villages, working around the clock and choosing the quickest roads.

Zhang Wei is a 32-year-old engineer from Shanghai. In 2020, he made a big decision — he left his well-paid job in the city and returned to his hometown in Gansu Province to start a new project.
Zhang Wei’s hometown is a small village in the mountains. When he was a child, the village was very poor. People used to farm on small pieces of land. There was no running water or electricity in many homes. Children had to walk over two hours to get to the nearest school.
After Zhang Wei finished college, he worked in Shanghai for eight years. During those years, he never forgot his hometown. He often thought about how to help the village develop. Finally, he decided to go back and bring changes.
Zhang Wei used his engineering skills to build a small factory that uses solar energy (太阳能). The factory produces machines that help farmers water their crops more efficiently. With these machines, farmers can save water and grow more vegetables. “In the past, farmers had to carry water from faraway rivers,” Zhang Wei said. “Now, our machines do the hard work.”
Over the past six years, the village has changed a lot. More than 50 families have started using solar energy in their homes. A new school has been built with the money from the factory. Young people who left the village are starting to come back to work in the new factory.
Zhang Wei feels proud of what he has done. “Development doesn’t mean everyone has to go to big cities,” he said. “We can also make our hometowns better with our knowledge and effort.”

Desertification (沙漠化) is a big problem for many countries. Chinese scientists have rich experience in dealing with it. Now they are helping African countries turn sandy areas into green land.
China has made great progress through hard work. It is still influenced by desertification, but it has achieved a lot. By November 2024, China had built a 3,046-kilometer-long green wall of trees. It caught the world’s attention. China has also created 32 million hectares of new forest.
Chinese scientists shared their technologies with Mauritania, an African country. They introduced different plants from China and used straw checkerboards to stop sand from moving. They also developed new ways to save water for farming. Robots, drones and solar-powered sand-blocking systems also helped a lot.
In 2024, the China-Africa Green Technology Park was built in Mauritania. At first, it was an empty land with wind and sand. Just one year later, grasses, fruits and vegetables grew there. A Chinese engineer said the park’s goal was to protect the environment and help local people. So far, China has trained 45 skilled workers and created 120 local jobs.
The environment minister called China a “very important partner”. Chinese scientists have worked hard to help African countries. China promises to keep making efforts. As the engineer said, “We are a community with a shared future. We hope our efforts will show this spirit.”
