Watching movies is great for improving your English. And if you choose films that you enjoy watching, you’ll learn English without even realising it! Here are four movies that are perfect for English learners.
Charlotte’s Web (2006)
Story: The power of friendship between a pig(Wilbur)and a spider(Charlotte).
The live-action film, a fine adaptation of E. B. White’s book, will entertain the young audience with cute talking animals and easy-to-follow language. Adults will also be charmed by heartwarming good time and learn to look at the world with curiosity and joy.
Toy Story(1995)
Story: A cartoon film about toys that come to life when children and adults aren’t around.
The storylines are clear and the characters use simple but useful language. Though it’s mainly for kids, Toy Story doesn’t feel childish. The story and jokes also attracted adults, so parents would be more likely to take their children to see the film.
Charlie & the Chocolate Factory (1971)
Story: Things go wrong when a group of kids get a free tour of Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory.
This film is also great for English learners as it is generally easy to follow. And you’ll hear some extracts(选段) from English literature because Willy often quotes well-known writers such as Oscar Wilde and Shakespeare.
The Sound of Music(1965)
Story: A young woman (Maria) becomes the nanny for seven children in a house in the Austrian Alps.
The Sound of Music is a musical and listening to music is one of the best ways to improve your English. Many of the film’s songs have become classics because they’re so catchy.

At my first lesson in Chinese calligraphy, my teacher told me plainly: “Now I will teach you how to write your name. And to make it beautiful.” I felt my breath catch. I was curious.
Growing up in Singapore, I had an unusual relationship with my Chinese name. My parents are ethnically Chinese, so they asked fortune tellers to decide my name, aiming for maximum luck. As a result, I ended up with a nonsense and embarrassing name: Chen Yiwen, meaning, roughly, “old”, “barley (薏米)” and “warm”.
When I arrived in America for college at 18, I put on an American accent and abandoned my Chinese name. When I moved to Hong Kong in 2021, after 14 years in the States, I decided to learn calligraphy. Why not get back in touch with my heritage? I thought.
In calligraphy, the idea is to copy the old masters’ techniques, thereby refining your own. Every week, though, my teacher would give uncomfortably on-the-nose assessments of my person. “You need to be braver,” he once observed. “Have confidence. Try to produce a bold stroke (笔画).” For years, I had prided myself on presenting an image of confidence, but my writing betrayed me.
I was trying to make sense of this practice. You must visualize the word as it is to be written and leave a trace of yourself in it. As a bodily practice, calligraphy could go beyond its own cultural restrictions. Could it help me go beyond mine? My teacher once said to me, “When you look at the word, you see the body. Though a word on the page is two-dimensional, it contains multitudes, conveying the force you’ve applied, the energy of your grip, the arch of your spine.” I had been learning calligraphy to get in touch with my cultural roots, but what I was really seeking was a return to myself. Now I have sensed that the pleasure out of calligraphy allows me to know myself more fully.
During a recent lesson, my teacher pointed at the word I had just finished, telling me: “This word is much better. I can see the choices you made, your calculations, your flow. Trust yourself. This word is yours.” He might as well have said, “This word is you.”
24.What can we learn about the author’s Chinese name?
A.It was given by the author’s teachers.
B.It has a meaningful and elegant meaning.
C.It was decided by fortune - tellers as the author’s parents wished for good luck.
D.The author has always been proud of it.
25.Why did the author decide to learn calligraphy when moving to Hong Kong?
A.To make more friends in Hong Kong.
B.To get back in touch with Chinese heritage.
C.To improve writing skills for exams.
D.To teach calligraphy in the future.
26.The underlined phrase “on - the - nose” in Paragraph 4 probably means?
A.very direct and accurate
B.not relevant at all
C.hard to understand
D.full of mistakes
27.What does the author really seek through learning calligraphy?
A.To become a famous calligrapher.
B.To show off calligraphy skills.
C.A return to herself and a better understanding of herself.
D.To make her Chinese name more beautiful only.
【答案】24.C 25.B 26.A 27.C
根据第二段中的“My parents are ethnically Chinese, so they asked fortune tellers to decide my name, aiming for maximum luck. As a result, I ended up with a nonsense and embarrassing name: Chen Yiwen, meaning, roughly, “old”, “barley (薏米)” and “warm”. (我的父母是华人,所以他们请算命先生为我取名,希望带来最大的好运。结果,我得到了一个荒谬又尴尬的名字:陈艺文(音译),大致意思是“老”,“薏米”和“温暖”。)”可知,作者的中文名是算命先生应父母祈求好运的愿望而定的。故选C项。
25.细节理解题。根据第三段中的“When I moved to Hong Kong in 2021, after 14 years in the States, I decided to learn calligraphy. Why not get back in touch with my heritage?

故选A项。
根据第五段中的“I had been learning calligraphy to get in touch with my cultural roots, but what I was really seeking was a return to myself. Now I have sensed that the pleasure out of calligraphy allows me to know myself more fully.(我学习书法是为了接触我的文化根源,但我真正寻求的是回归自我。现在我感觉到,书法带来的乐趣让我更充分地了解自己。)”可知,作者通过学习书法真正寻求的是回归自我和更好地了解自己。故选C项。

A pilot program in North County is teaching students about nutrition and where their food comes from. The five-week Farm to School program is a partnership between Escondido Union School District and the Farm to Institution Center. It encourages elementary school children to try vegetables they may not have tried before.
“I think that understanding just the roots of where our food comes from and how it gets to our table is meaningful,” said Jeremy Lyche, principal of Bernardo Elementary School. “You saw the kids’ excitement today. They love it.”
The students in Paul Erickson’s class have been in the program for over a month. “We’ve been doing multiple lessons where we’re learning about and teaching about local farms in our community, as well as some healthier choices like produce, just getting students engaged in farming,” Erickson said.
Once a week for the past five weeks, Alexis Anderson from the Farm to Institution Center has been coming by to teach these kids more about farming and what it takes to get fresh produce to their tables. Wednesday was the students’ last session in the program. She said the main takeaway for the kids is learning where their food comes from.
“And eating locally and supporting local because it not only benefits their community economically, but also benefits their health and just education overall of knowing what’s available,” Anderson said.
After Wednesday’s lesson, the students went to the school garden for a game of bingo to identify the things they’ve learned. One of the goals of the school garden is for the students to try new things. For Escondido Union School District, the ultimate goal for the school garden is for the produce to end up in the cafeteria for the children to eat. But there are some health regulations the district still needs to overcome before that can happen.
28.What is the purpose of the Farm to School program?
A.To provide funding for school gardens.
B.To promote local farms and their products.

根据第五段““And eating locally and supporting local because it not only benefits their community economically, but also benefits their health and just education overall of knowing what’s available,” Anderson said.(安德森说:“吃当地的食物,支持当地的食物,因为这不仅有利于他们的社区经济,而且有利于他们的健康和了解可用食物的整体教育。”)”

History is written, read, told — but rarely ever is it smelled.
Historians and scientists across Europe have now gotten together with perfumers(调香师)and museums for a unique project: to reveal what Europe smelled like between the 16th and early 20th centuries. A European street today may smell like coffee, fresh-baked bread and cigarettes. But what did it smell like hundreds of years ago? As part of this three-year-long project called “Odeuropa”, the researchers want to find all the old scents(气味)of Europe — and even recreate some of this ancient smellscape: from the dry tobacco scents to the smelly canals.
To do this, they will first build artificial intelligence (AI) that will be trained to go through historical texts, written in seven different languages, for any descriptions of scents. The AI will also be trained to detect images of objects in the texts that might be scented. The team will then use this information to create an online encyclopedia(百科全书)of smells from Europe’s past.
The encyclopedia will include the meaning of certain scents and will trace the stories behind scents, places and related practices, according to project leader Angela Lee. “This database will become a library for the smell heritage of Europe, enabling future generations to access and learn about the scented past.” The encyclopedia will also include descriptions of people for whom smell was important.
The researchers will then work with chemists and perfume makers to recreate past smells and figure out how to display the smells in museums and other historical sites. With current technology, almost every scent can be produced. “The more difficult part of the project will be to find descriptions of scents, because people haven’t always talked or written about them,” Lee said.
Scent plays a central role in our everyday life, even acting as a powerful time machine into our own past with its ability to activate long-forgotten memories. But it’s also a key tool in telling the stories of others. “Scent gives us access to the past in a much more direct and emotional way than language and images,” Lee said.
32. Why did the researchers start the “Odeuropa” project?
A. To rebuild a historical European street.
B. To make perfumes of traditional scents.
C. To find and recreate the smells of Europe.
D. To reproduce the scented past of Europe.
33. What will the AI do in the project?
A. Collect smell-related data.
B. Write interesting stories behind smells.
C. Detect objects by smell.
D. Describe smells in different languages.
34. Which of the following is the biggest challenge the project faces?
A. Scents of the past are hard to keep.

While gazing at (凝望) an airplane passing thousands of feet overhead, or when you are just about to board a flight at the airport, have you ever noticed that the vast majority of airplanes are white? It seems a bit strange, but is there a real reason for it? ___36___.
The color white is a terrific reflector of sunlight, and reflects almost all the light that falls on it, unlike other colors, which absorb some of the light. ___37___, it will absorb sunlight and heat up the body of the airplane, which is something you want to avoid. White, on the other hand, reflects that sunlight and avoids the gradual build-up of heat on the plane.
___38___. In terms of money, painting an airplane is not like painting a fence. It requires a considerable investment. Painting a regular Airbus takes between two and seven days, depending on your budget. Plus, more paint on the fuselage (机身) means more overall weight, which will translate to higher operating cost.
You see, the end goal of an airline company is to minimize the cost as much as possible. Buying a colored airplane would mean that they would likely have to paint it white, for the various reasons mentioned above. __39___. Thus, colored airplanes have lower resale value.
Finally, if there’s no problem with the existing white color, then why bother fixing it at all? ___40___.
A. White doesn’t fade
B. Painting is expensive
C. When your airplane is in flight
D. If you paint your airplane in a color other than white
E. Commercial planes are generally white because of the following reasons
F. As shown above, the white color does have its benefits — both scientific and economical
G. So it makes perfect sense that the company would pay a lower price for colored airplanes
E 37. D 38. B 39. G 40. F
由上文“While gazing at (凝望) an airplane passing thousands of feet overhead, or when you are just about to board a flight at the airport, have you ever noticed that the vast majority of airplanes are white? It seems a bit strange, but is there a real reason for it? (当你凝视着一架从数千英尺高空飞过的飞机,或者当你正要在机场登机时,你是否注意到绝大多数飞机都是白色的?这似乎有点奇怪,但有什么真正的原因吗?)”可知,上文主要就为什么飞机是白色的提出疑问。E项Commercial planes are generally white because of the following reasons(商用飞机通常是白色的,原因如下)符合语境,其中because of the following reasons和上文is there a real reason for it对应,且following有启下作用。故选E项。
由上文“The color white is a terrific reflector of sunlight, and reflects almost all the light that falls on it, unlike other colors, which absorb some of the light. (白色是一种极好的阳光反射器,它几乎能反射掉落在上面的所有光线,不像其他颜色那样,其它颜色会吸收一些光线)”和下文“it will absorb sunlight and heat up the body of the airplane, which is something you want to avoid.(它会吸收阳光并加热机身,这是你要避免的)”可知,白色会反光,其它颜色会吸收阳光,这是需要避免的。D项If you paint your airplane in a color other than white(如果你把飞机漆成白色以外的颜色)符合语境,其中a color other than white与前文other colors和后文it 对应,起承上启下作用。故选D项。
由下文“In terms of money, painting an airplane is not like painting a fence. It requires a considerable investment. Painting a regular Airbus takes between two and seven days, depending on your budget. Plus, more paint on the fuselage (机身) means more overall weight, which will translate to higher operating cost.(有些人认为文物保护应该让位于经济上的金钱,画飞机不像画篱笆。这需要大量投资。根据您的预算,为常规空中客车喷漆需要两到七天的时间。此外,机身上的油漆越多,意味着总重量越大,这将导致运营成本越高)”可知,这段主要讲给飞机上漆成本很大。B项Painting is expensive(油漆很贵)符合语境,其中expensive与后文higher operating cost对应。故选B项。
【39题详解】
由上文“Buying a colored airplane would mean that they would likely have to paint it white, for the various reasons mentioned above. (出于上述各种原因,购买彩色飞机意味着他们可能不得不将飞机漆成白色)”可知,买其它颜色的飞机又要漆白,这会导致成本增加。G项So it makes perfect sense that the company would pay a lower price for colored airplanes(因此,该公司将为彩色飞机支付更低的价格是完全合理的)符合语境,其中 colored airplanes与上文对应。故选G项。
由上文“Finally, if there’s no problem with the existing white color, then why bother fixing it at all? (最后,如果现有的白色没有问题,那么为什么还要费心修复它呢?)”以及结合全文可知,飞机被漆为白色在科学方面可以减少对热的吸收,经济方面可以节约成本。F项As shown above, the white color does have its benefits — both scientific and economical(如上所示,白色确实有它的好处——既科学又经济)符合语境,对上文进行总结。

I’ll never forget the day that one of my fifth-grade students, Jace, shyly raised his hand and said that he had never received a gift during reading discussions. Jace’s honesty surprised me. What was even more eye-opening was the fact that the boy had gone ten years and never experienced the joy and surprise of receiving a present.
I tried to search a reason that he might be saying this. Then I remembered his story. His mother was out of the picture and he lived alone with his dad. His father had a hard time holding down a job, and come to think of it. I didn’t see his father at enrollment(注册)or parent-teacher conferences.
A couple of weeks after Jace’s comment, he was absent from school. This happened to be the day I was sending home the annual note about the classroom Christmas gift exchange. Traditionally, each boy was to bring a gift for a boy in the three-dollar range and the same was true for each girl.
As we were discussing the specifics, a girl raised her hand and suggested that we do away with our traditional policy, and each buy a gift for Jace instead. The enthusiasm grew as the students discussed the kinds of things they knew Jace would like. We took a quick vote and unanimously(意见一致地)agreed to go ahead with this wonderful idea.
With great excitement, the gifts began to come in. Students with bright eyes would eagerly tell me how they found the “perfect gift” and how their parents spent more than three dollars on Jace’s gift! As the gifts poured in, I remember being so proud of my thoughtful, selfless students who were truly showing the spirit of Christmas.
After several days of absences, you can imagine our disappointment when we learned that Jace’s absences were due to the fact that he had moved away! I was sure of one thing. I couldn’t let my students or Jace down.
I found my information sheet and called every number listed. Apparently, Jace’s father had lost his job, causing them to relocate. No one knew where they were, and the cell phone number I had would ring with no response despite my continuous efforts. Even into our Christmas vacation, I constantly gave the phone number a shot.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

Finally, at 9 :30 PM on Christmas Eve, I decided to try one last time. By then, I really didn’t worry about calling at a late hour. I was so used to no answer after many attempts that I was startled(震惊的)to hear a response. Amazingly, Jace answered the phone! Soon, I explained the story to Jace and told him how his classmates really wanted to do this for him. I spoke with his father and the next thing I knew, I was driving to Jace’s home.
As I drove down the road to Jace’s house, I saw the porch light of his father’s trailer(拖车式房屋)signaling which home was his. I was thrilled to see Jace. We filled the room with all of the carefully wrapped gifts that were especially for him. He was so surprised and grateful. Jace’s joyful smile that evening lit up the sky like a strand of twinkle lights. I went to sleep that night thinking about Jace’s joy and my thoughtful students. With a smile of my own,I was thankful to be a part of one of the most important “lessons” of their lives.

A.very direct and accurate B.not relevant at all C.hard to understand D.full of mistakes
27.What does the author really seek through learning calligraphy?
A.To become a famous calligrapher.
B.To show off calligraphy skills.
C.A return to herself and a better understanding of herself.
D.To make her Chinese name more beautiful only.

C.It improves farming skills. D.It lowers food production cost.

A.Increase the variety of vegetables grown. B.Expand the garden to produce more food.
C.Ensure the produce meets health regulations. D.Train more teachers to take part in the program.

B. Records of scents are rarely found.
C. Technology to reproduce scents is poor. D. Display of smells in museums costs a lot.
35. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The application of past scents. B. The effect of scents on memory.
C. The role of scent in story-telling. D. The value of understanding scent.
