Meow! Welcome Your New Friend!
A new cat or kitten is coming to live with you — how exciting! Remember to check if you get things ready before it arrives. The following tips can always help you!
Pick the right cat for your family
Every cat has its own personality. Some love to play all day. Others enjoy a quiet rest. If you have young kids, a confident kitten might be a great fit. If your home is calm and quiet, an older cat could be the perfect friend.
Prepare your home before its arrival
Set up a quiet room with a soft bed, food and water bowls, a litter box, and a few toys. Make sure windows are safe and small holes are blocked. If you have other pets, introduce them slowly and carefully, at least a week later.
Think about your daily routine
If everyone is out during the day, a kitten may feel lonely. You might want to have two kittens so they can keep each other company. Older cats are often more independent and fine when they spend time alone.
Adopting a cat is not just for today
— it’s a promise.
Make sure you’re ready for years of purrs, play, and friendship.
With a little love and planning, you and your new cat will be best friends!

“It brings gentle comfort and lightens pressure for people,” said an old craftsman talking about ear-picking. Popular in Chongqing and Sichuan, this time-honored folk skill is an important part of Chinese intangible cultural heritage
Ear-picking dates back to the Western Han Dynasty. Back then, it was a service only for the upper class. It was not until the Ming and Qing dynasties that this skill stepped into ordinary people’s daily life. In the old days, barbers would provide ear-picking along with hair-cutting service in street teahouses. Gradually, some craftsmen made it their full-time job. Carrying wooden tool boxes on shoulders, they walked through teahouses to serve guests, and local people called them “Shu-er-lang”.
This craft asks for great patience and stable hands. A complete set of professional tools is needed, including cloud knives, special ear picks and soft goose-hair sticks (鹅毛棒). A skillful craftsman follows fixed steps. He first uses cloud knives to relax customers. Next, he carefully clears earwax (耳屎) without hurting ears. At the last step, goose-hair sticks create a soft tickling feeling. Besides skills, hygiene matters a lot. All tools must be disinfected before touching people’s ears to avoid health risks.
Today, some youth workshops teach young learners this traditional skill. Huang Qiang, a local inheritor (继承者), shares his opinion. “For fast-paced business projects, we use modern improved methods. However, classic folk performance sticks to hand-operated skills. Hand-done work carries the human warmth of our folk culture.”
24. Who could receive ear-picking service during the Western Han Dynasty?
A. Common barbers. B. Rich people. C. Teahouse waiters. D. Local teenagers.
25. What does the underlined word “disinfected” mean in Chinese?
26. Which sentence uses the word “warmth” with the same meaning as the phrase “human warmth” in bold?
A. The warmth of spring sun wakes up all plants in the garden.
B. The warmth in her smile made every stranger feel welcome.
C. Please test the warmth of hot water before you take a shower.
D. Small animals stay together for warmth on cold winter nights.
27. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Teahouse Life in Ancient Chongqing B. Useful Tools of Old-time Barbers
C. An Introduction to Traditional Ear-picking D. The Development of Local Street Business

On Zuckerman’s farm lived a young pig Wilbur and a gray spider Charlotte. They built a close friendship in the old barn. Wilbur once got terrible news: he would be killed for Christmas dinner. Charlotte made up her mind to try every means to save her friend’s life.
Scene One
(Under the dark barn roof. Wilbur lies in his pen, shaking with fear after hearing the bad news.)
Wilbur: I don’t want to die! I don’t want to die! Why should I be killed just for people’s dinner?
Charlotte: Keep calm, Wilbur. You are my good friend. I shall save you.
Wilbur: How? Human beings are so powerful. Nothing can change their decision.
Charlotte: I will work out a plan. Trust me.
Scene Two
(Night falls in the barn. Charlotte weaves busily on her web high above Wilbur’s pen. Words appear on the silk web.)
Wilbur: What are you doing up there, Charlotte? You have worked for hours without a rest.
Charlotte: I weave magic words into my web. Humans believe in wonders. If they regard you as a special pig, nobody will hurt you. Look, these silk words will surprise them.
Wilbur: (looking upward in great confusion) Can simple words really change my fate? I hardly believe it.
Scene Three
(Several days later. Crowds of villagers come to the barn to see the “wonder pig”. Wilbur becomes famous. But Charlotte grows weaker day by day. Spinning silk costs her too much energy.)
Wilbur: People admire me, all because of your hard work. You have saved my life! Why are you getting so thin and tired?
Charlotte: Spinning a web uses nearly all my strength. My days in this world are coming to an end.
Wilbur: (shocked and heart-broken) No! You cannot leave me alone! What will I do without you?
Scene Four
(The autumn wind blows through the barn. Charlotte finishes her egg-sac (卵囊) before her death. Wilbur guards the sac carefully.)
Charlotte: My children will stay here after I am gone. Friendship means giving, not just getting something in return.
Wilbur: (sad but fully awakened) I understand. I will protect your babies. Your love and kindness will live on here forever.

①By 2032, more than 60% of people around the world will live in large cities. Big cities will face great pressure to supply fresh vegetables for city-dwellers. Traditional farming takes too much land and water, which are both limited in cities. As a result, huge pieces of farmland and plenty of water are required. To solve this problem, China is developing vertical farming (垂直农业) as a new-style green solution for crowded cities.
②In 2023, China opened its first large-scale city vertical farm in Shanghai. Another improved project appeared in Chongqing in 2025.
③Vertical farms grow vegetables indoors in stacked layers (堆叠层) with LED lights and water-saving hydroponic systems (水培系统). Crops do not need soil. Traditional outdoor crops depend on rain and natural sunlight. Bad weather may slow down growth or destroy crops. Inside vertical farms, temperature and light are carefully controlled. Crops can grow all year round without worrying about storms or dry seasons.
④An agriculture research report shows vertical farming can cut water use by up to 92% compared with traditional farming. It also saves farmland resources greatly. However, one big shortcoming remains: LED lighting systems consume much electricity. The Chongqing project uses solar power for part of its energy supply. Experts are also considering mixing rooftop solar panels with vertical farm buildings to lower power costs.
⑤Vertical farming helps cities produce fresh local vegetables, cuts transport distances and reduces food waste. It offers useful experience for global city food-supply development. Still, scientists keep looking for ways to bring down energy costs and push this technology further.
32. What is the main purpose for China to develop vertical farming?
A. To create more farmland in the countryside.
B. To help big cities get fresh vegetables in a green way.
C. To improve the taste of all kinds of outdoor crops.
D. To increase the rainfall in large crowded cities.
33. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the whole passage?
A. China’s first large-scale vertical farm was built in Chongqing in 2025.
B. Crops in vertical farms need rich soil to get enough nutrients.
C. Vertical farming can greatly reduce water and land resources needed for planting.
D. Vertical-farm technology has been perfect and needs no further improvement.
34. Which of the following charts is TRUE according to Paragraph 4?
A. B.
C. D.
35. If you work as a researcher for vertical farming, what will you try to do next according to the passage?
A. Close all traditional outdoor farms in the near future.
B. Give up city vertical farms and turn to other projects.
C. Cut research money because vertical farms work perfectly.
D. Study better ways of solar energy to reduce electricity costs.

In western China, a new high-speed railway has drawn lots of public attention lately. It is the Xi’an-Chongqing high-speed railway. Below are notes taken by a reporter after talking with a railway worker, a tourism volunteer and a government officer.
I have been working on this project for several years. People spend about five hours travelling from Chongqing to Xi’an by high-speed train. Local people are all hoping for a much faster journey. Although some of us were worried about the difficult work at first, our hard work has kept the project moving forward. I am truly proud to be able to contribute to my hometown. Once it opens in 2028, the travel time will be reduced to only 2.5 hours.
— He Qiang, a railway worker
Many workers have devoted themselves to this project, and it has also received wide help from the society. After the railway opens, more than forty million tourists will travel between the two cities. Our volunteers will always be ready to help, and some tour guides will be invited to share local culture with visitors.
— Zheng Linhan, a tourism volunteer
As a local government officer, I have seen how much support the government has offered to make this project successful, from providing money to solving land problems along the route. Once it opens, more companies will come to invest here, and farmers will be able to sell their products in bigger markets. I believe the railway will bring new hope to families all along the line.
— Liu Qian, a government officer
This high-speed railway will greatly change people’s lives. Travel between the two cities will become much more convenient, and more people will visit their relatives or go sightseeing there. Nowadays, many teenagers take part in various short-term social practice during summer or winter holidays. Yet quite a few students treat these activities as a necessary school task just to hand in complete reports. They only take photos as proof (证据) to finish the task without thinking on their own in it.
Meaningful social practice is far more of great value than getting a signature (签字) on an application form. It offers precious chances for teenagers to step out of textbook knowledge and observe the complex real-world society. When doing community volunteer work or countryside field surveys, teens will meet different groups of people and face all kinds of unexpected difficulties. These special experiences push them to communicate bravely, think independently and work out practical problems on their own.
However, practice activities may produce bad results for students if poorly planned. For example, some students only take photos instead of really taking part in these activities. This may make them form the habit of cheating others. Therefore, experts remind schools to pay attention to students’ real experiences. Young people should be encouraged to feel, reflect and record their true inner feelings. Only in this way can social practice truly help with teenagers’ all-round development.
Nowadays, many teenagers take part in holiday social practice. However, some students only take photos to finish the school task ____65____. Real social practice helps teens go beyond textbooks and develop practical skills. Actually, compared with those form-only tasks, meaningful practice is ____66____. Besides, if practice activities are poorly organized, ____67____. Therefore, unless teenagers focus on their real experiences and true feelings, ____68____.

主语His life experience指事物,系动词is后需用形容词作表语。
consider…as… 是”,变为被动语态后仍保留介词as,be considered as one of…

A. Common barbers. B. Rich people. C. Teahouse waiters. D. Local teenagers.

B 33. C 34. A 35. D
