B When I entered Oxford University, I wasn’t particularly interested in joining the rowing club. I just wondered what it was like to row in one of those narrow boats, so I signed up with the intention of quitting after the first session. At least that’s what I thought. Six months later, I found myself sitting in a rowing boat with three teammates, waiting for a 2000-meter race to start. In the boat alongside us sat a crew from the university’s team, two of whom had won medals at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. My crew was only rowing at college level and we had only trained a few times as a team, so facing such strong athletes was quite terrifying. I tried to focus my mind on the race, not on my opponents. Go! We pushed off with all our might and rowed as fast as we could. As we reached the halfway mark, the other crew was ahead of us. But to my amazement, we were gaining on them. If we could win the race, we would get through to the final! We pushed even harder, ignoring the pain in our legs and drawing energy from the cheers of our college friends. I could already sense the sweet taste of victory. But then, disaster. One of my teammates lost control of his oar (桨), knocking him nearly out of the boat. We came to a sudden stop, and watched as our opponents crossed the finishing line. It was the most disappointing moment in my life. I wanted to punch my teammate who had ruined everything and push him into the water. But when I saw how angry he was with himself, I gave him a hug. Although we lost, I’m still proud of how well we did that day facing a much stronger team. What I remember now is the thrill of racing, not the pain of defeat. 24. Why did the author join the rowing club? A. He was fond of rowing. B. He was curious about rowing. C. He signed with the team. D. He wanted to win the boat race. 25. How did the author feel before the race? A. Worried. B. Amazed. C. Disappointed. D. Confused. 26. Why did they lose the game? A. They were worn out. B. A group member made a mistake. C. They were out of the boat. D. The opponents were too strong. 27. What lesson did the author learn from his experience? A. Two heads are better than one. B. Many hands make light work. C. Failure is the mother of success. D. Trying your best is the best award. C If a scientist’s first language is not English, would it be really difficult to publish an article in an international journal? A recent study looked at tons of scientific journals in the field of biology and found that they don’t do much to help scientists who are not native English speakers. The study found most of these journals judge articles based on how well they are written in English. This can be a problem for scientists who are not fluent in English because they have to work harder to make sure their papers can be published in international journals. “The role of journals is huge because they can be a source of language barriers (障碍), but they also have the ability to solve many of the barriers,” says Tatsuya Amano, a biodiversity researcher. He added that though some journals have started to offer tools to help scientists whose first language is not English, such examples are still rare.” Another study by Amano found that non-native English speakers are more likely to have their papers rejected because of writing issues compared to native English speakers. This shows that the language unfairness in journals can have serious consequences for scientists who are not native English speakers. So apart from waiting for the journals, what can non-native scientists do? One solution is to cooperate with other scientists from English-speaking countries. They can help to check the writing skillfully to double the possibility of being published by the international journal. 28. What do most international journals judge articles based on? A. The fluency of English writing. B. The influence of the scientists. C. The nationalities of the authors. D. The quality of the research results. 29. What does the underlined word “rejected” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Refused. B. Praised. C. Recognized. D. Published. 30. Which of the following is suggested in the last paragraph? A. Work with native English scientists. B. Ask publishers for help to check errors. C. Improve English before writing a paper. D. Practice reading and writing in daily life. 31. Which can be a suitable title for the text? A. A Success in the Field of Biology Study B. Language Inequality Met in Scientific Journals C. The Advantages of Publishing Papers in English D. Scientists’ Growing Interest in Learning a Language D Anyone who’s lived through middle school knows those years can be particularly challenging. Some researches show youths across the U.S. are struggling with mental health. The physical health benefits of bike riding have been well-documented. Wilson, a researcher at Loma Linda University School of Medicine, and his co-authors carried out a new study to see if taking part in a cycling program could result in measurable changes in mind for teenagers. The study involved more than 1,200 students, ages 11 to 14. Students participated in a cycling class for at least three days a week, for a period of 6 weeks. They learned cycling safety and practicing skills outdoors. while raising their heart rate and just having fun. The students completed standardized questionnaires before and after the program designed to measure their health. “We know cycling can benefit the body. Our research shows how it benefits the mind and social relationships as well. Bike riding can be an ideal activity for adolescents because of the benefits it offers,” said Wilson. “Cycling engages several parts of brain function. You are looking at your hearing, you’re balancing, you’re navigating and turning. Oftentimes, you’re doing it with someone else, so there’s the positive effect of company or group activity,” said Allan Reiss, a professor at Stanford University School of Medicine. While exercise has powerful mental health benefits, it’s not universal. For example, previous research has shown that teenage girls are at higher risk of mental health problems like depression and anxiety than boys. The current study found that, while middle school girls reported increased well-being after participating in the cycling program, that increase “may just reach the kind of baseline level for male students,” Wilson said. And other aspects of healthy living are also important, noted Wilson. The study found that teenagers who didn’t limit screen time to a maximum of two hours a day, or who got less than the recommended 8.5 hours of sleep, saw less improvement in their well-being, he said. 32. What does the new study mainly focus on? A. Physical benefits of cycling. B. Challenges in middle school. C. Mental effects of bike riding. D. Teenagers’ learning problems. 33. What did the students do in the program? A. Take cycling classes for a week. B. Learn how to keep safe while cycling. C. Do indoor exercise to raise heart rates. D. Create questionnaires for health research. 34. What is Reiss’s attitude to the result of the study? A. Unclear. B. Doubtful. C. Supportive. D. Negative. 35. What is the last paragraph mainly about? A. Evidence from previous research. B. Application of the research results. C. Limits of exercise’s mental benefits. D. Doubts over the programs’ real value. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 We’re all busy, and finding more time for reading in our day can seem like a real challenge. Madam Nadirah walked to the front of the classroom carrying a big box. The box had bottles of paint and paintbrushes sticking out of it. Adam smiled. He loved art time! They always worked in groups on their projects. Maybe this time he would get to work with one of his friends. Madam Nadirah pointed to the first table and announced the group members. Adam stood up and moved to sit at the table, joining Ivan and Mya. He didn’t know anyone in the group, but he was good at making friends. He hoped this could be a fresh start. Once everyone found their group, Madam Nadirah started to hand out the materials. “Your challenge is to use these materials to make art,” she said. She put three cups on each table. Adam moved closer to look inside their cups. One cup had nutshells (坚果壳) in it, another had wooden sticks, and the last one had colorful beads (珠子). Adam felt unsure. He didn’t know what to make with these things. “You only have time to make one project,” Madam Nadirah said. “So work together to decide what you are going to make.” Loud chatter filled the room as the groups started planning their projects. In Adam’s group, different opinions soon appeared. Mya wanted to make a tree, while Ivan imagined building a house. As they tried to explain their ideas, their voices grew louder, and impatience gradually replaced (代替) their excitement. Neither side was willing to back down, and the disagreement became increasingly serious. They even began fighting over the cups. Adam watched his group with growing concern (担心). He didn’t want their first project together end in anger. But they were only allowed to make one project. They couldn’t make a tree and a house. Then Adam had an idea. Maybe there was a way they could do both. “What if we make a house in a tree?” Hearing that, Mya and Ivan stopped fighting. 注意: (1)续写词数应为150个左右; (2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 To Adam’s relief, the others agreed to give his idea a try. By the end of the art lesson, Adam’s group stood back to admire their finished project. 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
