My teacher’s claim that no one would score above 90% shook my confidence. This anxiety was intensified at home, where my father voiced his concerns over my flat SAT progress, a necessity for a celebrated university. The final catalyst for my breakdown was an unexpected rejection from the Regional Red Cross Youth Council. As vice president of my school’s chapter, I had never considered this possibility. The Red Cross was my passion and what I relied on to set me apart from other applicants. This rejection made my future seem dim, and I broke like a rubber band stretched beyond its limit. I found my mother, the woman who had sacrificed her own career and life for my opportunities, and poured out my fears. She listened attentively before drawing a circle on the tablecloth. “This is your time,” she began. “Eighty percent is schoolwork, ten percent the SAT, and ten percent extracurriculars.” She then looked at me with deep emotion and said, “But most importantly, at one hundred percent, is your mental health.” “Nothing is more important than your health,” she continued. “We want you to have a good job so you’ll be less stressed. If this path makes you so unhappy, it isn’t worth it. If you’re happier flipping hamburgers, so be it.” Her insight was a big relief. I realized a rubber band doesn’t have to keep stretching. A rubber band that wraps around your hair during the day and is allowed to rest on your nightstand at night won’t ever break. Though my routine remained the same — studying hard and pursuing excellence — my perspective was forever changed. The fear of failure lost its power. I am still reaching for the moon, but I am no longer afraid. For I know that if I miss, I will land right in my mother’s arms. 4. What does the underlined word “catalyst” in paragraph 2 mean? A. Foundation. B. Solution. C. Symbol. D. Cause. 5. What does the author’s mother attach most importance to? A. The author’s overall wellbeing. B. The sacrifice for her daughter. C. The relief of the author’s stress. D. The author’s devotion to schoolwork. 6. What does the use of the “rubber band” try to illustrate? A. A conflict with her father about goals. B. A bond between the author and her mother. C. A shift in the author’s outlook on pressure. D. A link to the author’s academic performance. 7. What’s the best title of the passage? A. Let Go of Perfection: The Only Way to Achieve Academic Success B. The Rubber Band Comparison: A Key to Relieving Academic Pressure C. From Broken to Brave: A Rubber Band’s Lesson on Mental Health D. Overcoming Rejection: How IB and SAT Pressures Shaped My Growth C You finish a meal, feel completely full, and then someone opens a box of dessert. A moment ago, your body seemed finished with food. Now, suddenly, dessert sounds possible. We usually think of hunger as the only thing that drives eating. In one sense, that’s true. But modern life surrounds us with something that biology did not quite prepare us for: a constant stream of food cues — packaging, bakery windows, delivery photos… A recent study in Appetite studied why we may not be able to avoid overeating when faced with these food cues. For the study, 90 university students rated their current hunger and the desirability of eleven foods and on this basis two foods of equal rating were selected. Halfway through the experiment, they were fed one of the two foods until they no longer wanted more of it. After the meal, participants rated once again and as a result, they rated the food they ate as less desirable and the food showed “devaluation”. So far, this sounds like common sense: If you eat enough potato chips, the chips should become less tempting. If you eat enough brownies, brownies should lose some of their magic. The study confirmed that people themselves reported experiencing this. However, when researchers recorded students’ reward positivity signal in their brain, the results told a different story. The early brain signal did not shrink when participants saw images of the food they had just stuffed themselves with. The mind can “know” that a food is no longer worth pursuing, but a fast and automatic part of the brain still reacts to its cue as though it carries reward. This study helps explain one of the most frustrating aspects of eating. Overeating is not always a simple failure of willpower. It may begin earlier than that, in the split second when a food cue grabs the brain before deliberate control has had time to catch up. This suggests that self-control may not begin by erasing temptation (诱惑), but by overriding it. The first wave of evaluation may still arrive, but later processes can still step in and say no. Seen this way, self-control is not the absence of desire. It is the ability to outlast a signal that the brain continues to generate. 8. What is the modern challenge of eating? A. Wide availability of food. B. Intense biological hunger. C. Mounting emotional pressure. D. Frequent exposure to food signals. 9. What does the underlined word “devaluation” in paragraph 2 refer to? A. A drop in its market price. B. A growing attraction to people. C. A decline in its original appeal. D. A reduction in its daily supply. 10. What is the purpose of paragraph 3? A. To question the study’s findings. B. To introduce a new food experiment. C. To explain the reason behind hunger. D. To reveal the mind-brain contradiction. 11. What can we learn about self-control from the last paragraph? A. It results from the first food evaluation. B. It develops through repeated practice. C. It involves acting against lasting urges. D. It requires getting rid of desire for food. D A new research confirmed that Shakespeare truly boosts children’s reading and writing skills and emotional intelligence provided that his works are acted out. “What we’ve learned is that the techniques actors use have a powerful effect on how children handle language and how they perceive themselves,” said Siri Lee of the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC). The randomized control trial involved hundreds of year 5 pupils — aged nine and ten — at 45 primary schools that had not been “previously exposed to RSC teaching approach.” They were split into target and control groups and asked to write, for example, a message in a bottle as Ferdinand after the shipwreck in The Tempest. The target group was given a 30-minute drama-based activity to accompany the passage. The results showed that the target group of pupils drew on a wider vocabulary, used words “classed as more complicated or rarer”, and wrote at greater length. They also “appear to be more comfortable writing in role. While control pupils imagine how they themselves would react to being shipwrecked, target children put themselves in the shoes of a literary character and express the character’s emotion”. The Time to Act study also found that while control pupils relied on “deserted island conventions” such as palm trees, target pupils were “more expansive giving a broader picture of the sky, the sea and the atmospheric conditions.” Siri Lee said she had been most surprised by the “emotional literacy that was evident in the target children’s writing” and that they were “more resilient in their writing, more hopeful”. She added: “The emotional understanding was very evident and it is probably related to the rehearsal room process where you are used to trying to imagine your way through. They were comfortable in describing different emotional states and part of what you do in drama is put yourself in different shoes.” The study showed the importance of embedding arts in education, she said. But could the results be replicated with any old dramatist? Siri Lee said more research would be needed but suggested that the grammar school boy’s use of 20,000 words, compared with the everyday 2,000 words, gave a “massive expansion of language into children’s lives”, which was combined with children “using their whole bodies to bring words to life”. 12. Why were the pupils divided into two groups? A. To illustrate the popularity of RSC. B. To prove the advantage of acting-out. C. To measure their writing speed. D. To see their understandings of a drama. 13. What did control pupils’ reliance on “deserted island conventions” show? A. Their preference for big words. B. Their casual style of writing. C. Their weakness in description. D. Their ignorance of small details. 14. What can be inferred about Shakespeare’s use of words? A. It overshadows that of other dramatists. B. It is overly challenging to students. C. It enriches children’s daily vocabulary. D. It is definitely scholarship-oriented. 15. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Acting Out Shakespeare: A Stone, Two Birds B. Follow in Shakespeare’s Footsteps C. Shakespeare: Language Strugglers’ Cure-all D. Shakespeare: Easier Said Than Done An educated person understands that education is a lifelong journey, not a destination. Being truly educated means more than just having academic qualifications. ____16____ Such individuals are literate, culturally aware, well-informed, and composed in their demeanor. First, staying informed about the world is crucial. An educated person follows daily news from a variety of reliable sources at regional, national, and international levels. Reading multiple publications, such as The Guardian or Le Monde, helps provide a balanced view. ____17____ However, you must always stay critical and not take everything at face value, noticing the biases in different reports. Beyond current affairs, a truly educated person actively appreciates culture. ____18____ Immersing yourself in classic and contemporary literature fosters empathy by portraying diverse human experiences. Reading foundational philosophy provides tools to ponder morality and free will. Exploring diverse films, reading criticism, and listening to various musical genres (体裁) all contribute to a rich, cultured perspective. Taking notes while engaging with these works helps you absorb key ideas. ____19____ An educated person listens carefully, contributes selectively, and does not dominate conversations. Humility is key — avoiding bragging (吹嘘) shows genuine respect for others. When you don’t understand something, asking questions demonstrates a willingness to learn. A calm and level-headed demeanor is also a hallmark; instead of reacting with anger, an educated person responds calmly and seeks to resolve issues constructively. Ultimately, becoming educated is not about showing off what you know, but about demonstrating a continuous willingness to learn. These habits require consistent effort and genuine curiosity. ____20____ A. Listening to news radio is also valuable. B. Besides that, seeking is an important character. C. The truly educated person knows learning never ends. D. It involves actively and consistently broadening your mind. E. Equally important is the ability to engage with others thoughtfully. F. This does not mean that you need to agree with everything you hear. G. Visiting museums and studying art pieces help develop visual literacy. When you spend time with close friends, how do you feel? You may feel like you belong. According to the Oxford dictionary, belonging is defined as a “deep sense of acceptance, inclusion, and identification within a group, place, or context.” ____21____ Since the beginning of human evolution, people have connected with others in order to survive. This desire to form and grow relationships is rooted in the human brain. ____22____ In 1943, Abraham Maslow was the first psychologist to write about belonging as a human need. His theory, the Hierarchy (等级) of Needs, states that humans must acquire their basic needs, such as physiological (生理上的) needs and needs related to safety, before they can begin fulfilling other higher, more complex needs, like belonging or developing self-esteem. Another groundbreaking research about belonging emerged in 1995. Mark Leary and Roy Baumeister found that humans have a universal drive to belong, which motivates their thoughts and actions. In fact, this drive is so important that they argued it was a fundamental human need-not a secondary need in a hierarchy. Their later research explored the connection between self-esteem and belonging. According to their research, self-esteem is not just about how people feel about themselves internally. ____23____ Although feeling connected to people is important in many settings, it becomes especially critical in schools. A 2020 research analysis found that students who do not feel a sense of belonging at school are often searching for threats in their environment that signal whether they are welcome or not. ____24____ This, in turn, can cause poorer academic performance. It can also discourage students from forming deeper relationships. So, a student’s feeling of belonging is vital for their learning. ____25____ Researchers will continue to analyze how personality, culture, and even social media shape how connected we feel to others. With this knowledge, people can create schools and communities where more people feel included. That way, we can develop a society that is overall healthier, happier, and more connected. A. They may do things to increase their self-esteem. B. This stress can use up cognitive resources needed for learning. C. Belonging is a complex thing because it is influenced by many factors. D. Over the years, researchers have been exploring this subjective feeling. E. Feeling like you belong can actually improve many aspects of your life. F. It actually serves as a warning signal that measures how much people feel accepted. G. When you see yourself well suited to a specific environment, you feel valued and respected. I must admit, I haven’t always been a lover of animals. Overcoming Rejection: How IB and SAT Pressures Shaped My Growth 【答案】4. D 5. A 6. C 7. 根据第一段“The unforgiving demands of the IB program became my reality on the third day of school with an overwhelming physics lab.(开学第三天,IB课程严苛的要求就成为了我的现实,一场难度极大的物理实验课扑面而来。)”、“This anxiety was intensified at home, where my father voiced his concerns over my flat SAT progress, a necessity for a celebrated university.(回到家,这份焦虑愈发强烈。父亲对我停滞不前的SAT成绩表达了担忧,而想要进入知名大学,SAT成绩是必备条件。)”以及第二段“The final catalyst for my breakdown was an unexpected rejection from the Regional Red Cross Youth Council.(导致我崩溃的最后catalyst是地区红十字会青年委员会出人意料的拒绝。)” 根据第三段“She then looked at me with deep emotion and said, ‘But most importantly, at one hundred percent, is your mental health.’(随后她深情地看着我说道:‘但最重要、占据百分之百比重的,是你的心理健康。’)”以及第四段“‘Nothing is more important than your health,’ she continued.(她继续说道:‘没有什么比你的健康更重要。’)” 根据第二段“This rejection made my future seem dim, and I broke like a rubber band stretched beyond its limit.(这次被拒让我的未来看起来一片渺茫,我崩溃了,就像一根被拉过极限的橡皮筋。)”以及第五段“I realized a rubber band doesn’t have to keep stretching. A rubber band that wraps around your hair during the day and is allowed to rest on your nightstand at night won’t ever break.(我意识到橡皮筋不必一直紧绷。白天扎头发,夜晚可以放在床头柜休息的橡皮筋永远不会断裂。)”可知,橡皮筋的比喻,用来阐释作者看待压力的观念发生转变:人不能一直紧绷,也需要休息。 【7题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,根据第二段“This rejection made my future seem dim, and I broke like a rubber band stretched beyond its limit.(这次被拒让我的未来看起来一片渺茫,我崩溃了,就像一根被拉过极限的橡皮筋。)”,第五段“I realized a rubber band doesn’t have to keep stretching.(我意识到橡皮筋不必一直紧绷。)”以及第六段“Though my routine remained the same — studying hard and pursuing excellence — my perspective was forever changed. The fear of failure lost its power. I am still reaching for the moon, but I am no longer afraid.(虽然我的日常依旧不变——努力学习、追求卓越,但我的态度彻底改变。对失败的恐惧不再能支配我。我依旧追逐远大理想,但我不再畏惧。)”可知,文章主要讲述作者濒临崩溃,经母亲的开导得到启发,通过橡皮筋的比喻懂得重视心理健康、勇敢面对失败,C选项“From Broken to Brave: A Rubber Band’s Lesson on Mental Health(从崩溃到勇敢:橡皮筋对心理健康的启示)”最能概括文章大意。 C You finish a meal, feel completely full, and then someone opens a box of dessert. D 9. C 10. D 11. 根据第一段“But modern life surrounds us with something that biology did not quite prepare us for: a constant stream of food cues — packaging, bakery windows, delivery photos… (但现代生活中充斥着人类生理机制尚未完全适应的事物:源源不断的食物线索——包装、面包店橱窗、外卖照片……)”可知,现代饮食的挑战是频繁接触食物信号。 【9题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第二段“After the meal, participants rated once again and as a result, they rated the food they ate as less desirable and the food showed “devaluation”. So far, this sounds like common sense: If you eat enough potato chips, the chips should become less tempting. If you eat enough brownies, brownies should lose some of their magic. (饭后,参与者再次评分,结果,他们认为他们吃的食物没那么有吸引力,食物显示出devaluation。到目前为止,这听起来像是常识:如果你吃了足够的薯片,薯片应该会变得不那么诱人。如果你吃了足够的布朗尼,布朗尼应该会失去一些魔力。)”可知,devaluation指的是食物变得不那么诱人,食物原有吸引力的下降。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段“However, when researchers recorded students’ reward positivity signal in their brain, the results told a different story. The early brain signal did not shrink when participants saw images of the food they had just stuffed themselves with. The mind can “know” that a food is no longer worth pursuing, but a fast and automatic part of the brain still reacts to its cue as though it carries reward. (然而,当研究人员记录学生大脑中的奖励积极信号时,结果却有所不同。当参与者看到他们刚刚塞满自己的食物的图像时,早期的大脑信号并没有缩小。大脑可以“知道”一种食物不再值得追求,但大脑的一个快速而自动的部分仍然会对它的提示做出反应,就像它带来了奖励一样。)”可知,第三段旨在揭示大脑自动反应与主观认知之间的矛盾。 【11题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段“This suggests that self-control may not begin by erasing temptation (诱惑), but by overriding it. The first wave of evaluation may still arrive, but later processes can still step in and say no. Seen this way, self-control is not the absence of desire. It is the ability to outlast a signal that the brain continues to generate. (这表明,自控可能不是从消除诱惑开始,而是通过克服诱惑来实现。第一波评价可能仍会到来,但稍后的过程仍能介入并说“不”。这样看来,自控不是没有欲望。它是超越大脑持续产生的信号的能力。)”可知,自控涉及在持久的冲动面前采取行动予以抵制。 D A new research confirmed that Shakespeare truly boosts children’s reading and writing skills and emotional intelligence provided that his works are acted out. Shakespeare: Easier Said Than Done 【答案】12. B 13. C 14. C 15. 根据原文第一段“New research confirmed that Shakespeare truly boosts children’s reading and writing skills and emotional intelligence provided that his works are acted out.(新研究证实:倘若通过戏剧表演的形式演绎莎士比亚的作品,就能切实提升孩子们的读写能力与情商。)”及第二段“They were split into target and control groups and asked to write, for example, a message in a bottle as Ferdinand after the shipwreck in The Tempest. The target group was given a 30-minute drama-based activity to accompany the passage.(他们被分成实验组和对照组,比如要求学生扮演《暴风雨》中遭遇海难后的费迪南德写一封漂流瓶信件,实验组会配合课文开展三十分钟戏剧活动。)” 根据原文第三段“The Time to Act study also found that while control pupils relied on “deserted island conventions” such as palm trees, target pupils were “more expansive giving a broader picture of the sky, the sea and the atmospheric conditions.”(这项名为“行动时刻”的研究还发现,对照组学生只会套用棕榈树这类荒岛写作套路,实验组学生描写内容更丰富,能细致描绘天空、大海和环境氛围。)” 根据原文最后一段“Siri Lee said more research would be needed but suggested that the grammar school boy’s use of 20,000 words, compared with the everyday 2,000 words, gave a “massive expansion of language into children’s lives”, which was combined with children “using their whole bodies to bring words to life”.(Siri Lee表示还需要更多研究,但提出莎士比亚拥有两万个词汇,远超日常两千常用词,极大拓展了孩子接触到的语言内容,还能配合肢体表演活化文字。)” 根据原文第一段“New research confirmed that Shakespeare truly boosts children’s reading and writing skills and emotional intelligence provided that his works are acted out.(一项新研究证实,如果用表演形式演绎莎士比亚作品,能切实提升孩子的读写能力与情商。)” An educated person understands that education is a lifelong journey, not a destination. F. G 22. D 23.
