I think everyone has something they don’t like about themselves. For me, it was the birthmark (胎记) on my face. It was bright red, the colour of a strawberry.
Sometimes, I felt people secretly (秘密地) looking at my face. But when I turned my head, they looked away. On crowded buses and trains, it felt just like a disaster (灾难). With so many people around me, my birthmark burnt red hot. So I always kept my hair long to cover it until that day.
It was a cloudy morning. A new student named Maddie arrived in our class. She sat right beside me. Instead of looking away, Maddie studied my face. This made me so nervous. Clouds came through the window and filled my heart. Suddenly, she said something I would never forget.
“Sally, right?” she said. “You have a red rose on your face. How beautiful!”
▲ I looked up and met her smiling eyes. Although I only replied “thank you”, it turned sunny in my heart. When I got home, I rushed to the bathroom and looked in the mirror. For the first time, I could look at my birthmark without quickly turning away. The shape of it was really like a flower. The next day, to my surprise, Maddie painted a red rose on her own face!
I haven’t told Maddie the whole story yet. Anyway, she has changed me. I have already learnt that I am what I am. Everyone has something special and different—that is what’s interesting.

Hobbies can not only make us happy, but also keep our brains healthy. A Canadian study tells us that long-term hobbies can help improve our brain structure.
The study involved (包含) 58 bird-watching lovers. They were divided into (分成) two groups: one group was expert (专家) bird-watchers, and the other was beginners. All these people were aged from 20 to 70, and they had similar educational backgrounds.
In the study, volunteers took a brain test. They looked at a bird photo for less than four seconds. Then they had to pick the right bird from four pictures. They took the test 72 times, and there were 18 kinds of birds.
The result was very clear. Experts got 83% of local birds right and 61% of non-local birds right. But beginners only got 44% right for both. The brain scans (扫描) also showed differences. For experts, the brain parts for attention and working memory were better, no matter how old they were.
Creative hobbies are also good for the brain, like music and dancing. A 2025 study found that dancers’ brains looked over seven years younger than their real age. Scientists also said short-term creative learning, like 30 hours, could make our brains younger. Creativity is good for both our culture and our body.
